Hydroplaning - When you lose control of your vehicle due to heavy water on the road
Make sure you work the throttle/Release the gas, never brake.
    Got it!

Here's some tips for how to overcome fear of driving
      1) Take control of your own life.
      2) Learn about the power of the mind.
      3) Follow in the tracks of people who have already overcome the fear.
I discovered these tips from the Roys Quick Fix (check it out on google) without a doubt the most incredible course on success i've heard of.

Thank you for posting these videos! I've been driving for awhile, but I like to watch refreshers like this because as someone who lives in Southern California we don't get much rain. When we do get it though, everyone seems to drive like they don't know what to do. I feel so much more prepared to take on that rain when it comes! ♥

So I'm still getting use to driving(I've only been driving for 7 months lol). Today was the heaviest rain I've ever driven in. I was doing good at first. But then then the street I was driving on got flooded BAD. I of course went very slow, but when I tried make a right turn, my steering wheel became VERY hard to turn. And began to lock up. I freaked out a little, but I was able to make it through, and drive safely home, but it scared the HELL out of me.

Some great information here. Where I live, it doesn't matter what the weather, people are speeding. The roads can be rain soaked or covered in snow and people are driving too fast for conditions. I recommend planning extra time to get to where you need to be in bad weather. When it's raining and especially at night, it will be more difficult to see road hazards in the roadway, such as truck tire debris from tire failures, and other debris. I've been driving awhile now, and if the rain gets to be so heavy as to make it near impossible to see, there is no shame in getting off the highway to somewhere safe and letting the storm pass till visibility is better. I've done that. No sense risking being part of a multiple vehicle collision. They can and do happen. Focus on driving, not a phone or any other distractions, situational awareness and having an out can save your life.

It depends on the road, city driving will have more stops and highway driving will have less stops. Be cautious even if your an experienced driver. Rain changes how you drive. Slow speed is always better. Use good judgment. Just because there are no vehicles in front of you, that doesn’t mean you go fast, vehicles can appear out of nowhere and if your driving at high speed in the rain, your going to crash or at least hydroplane.

In your night time videos, you mentioned as a rule of thumb, to drive around 5-8km /h slower than the destinated speed limit.
In the rain, you mentioned to create a greater driving gap between you and the car in front.
As a rule of thumb whilst driving in the rain, should you also lower your driving speed by a certain measure? Thank you.

Well said Rick and for some cars these days they do have a function that the wipers will turn on when rainfall is detected. Try to drive 5 mph 10 km/h if outside of the United States and United Kingdom below the speed limit depending on the situation.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  4 года назад +3

Hi EpicThe112 - Interesting where technology is going. I was talking to a mate of mine when I was visiting Ontario, and he had a new truck that automatically dimmed the high beam lights. He said it was problematic. So, we still have a bit to go in terms of perfecting some of this technology. And yes, drivers must drive at a speed that they are comfortable with when it's raining or there's other inclement weather. All the best, Cheers Rick

Here's what is intriguing about driving under poor conditions, when rain and soon the snow and ice will arrive: if you have practiced engine braking, you essentially have a secondary braking system, and something that becomes a mandatory thing you would need to do in preparation of your next maneuver, just in case you have water, snow or ice where you need to slow down for your turn.
Pardon me if that was a bit tough to read. I find engine braking a very fascinating way to slow down; downshift, apply gas and lift the clutch. It's also very useful when you have a feeling you may wish to slow down for a said curve, especially when there would be someone walking or bicycling there (fairly common on 40-50 zone roads with no walkways).
Potentially you can engine brake without the gas pedal when downshifting, but then the vehicle would nudge a bit if you lift the clutch too quickly, and the clutch wouldn't appreciate that much. Also, under slippery conditions you would lose control, or just be a tiny or big nuisance to someone behind you. Therefore, apply gas.
This applies to upshifting as well, especially when you go faster on a said gear (for example, 20+ km/h and go from gear 1 to gear 2 by only lifting the clutch), upshift and only lift the clutch, causing you to potentially nudge backwards.
At the end of the day, I couldn't be happier to see this video. Although this vid didn't have the cool 80s-esque intro as usual, it was the best thing ever to hear you talk about this subject as you drove. I have yet to get a dashcam. Since I've gotten more experience, I plan to record my original driving test routes and explain what I did wrong and what I could've done better. I actually drove through one T-junction on a tiny street, where I just stopped originally on my first test. It's a bit of an awkward story to tackle, but now I just laugh it off and keep moving on towards improvement.

Today I was driving with my dad practicing in the rain and I had to make a U turn, then one of those “slightly” loud cars stopped behind us and when it was their turn to turn around, apparently they audibly overcooked it on the throttle and spun out… into a curb. That gave me a clear example of the traction the road had at the time and a laugh.

It means to simply take your foot off the accelerator (the gas pedal). So if the tires start to hydroplane, simply take your foot off the gas pedal and steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go. Happy to hear we could help out. All the best, Cheers Rick

What should I do when a truck cuts in front of me too closely? Also, what about when I'm on a multi-lane highway with lots of cars and no way to get a good distance from them?
I had to drive to Boston from Maine and back today/tonight, and both things occurred. In the first case, a wall of water would blind me for several seconds. In the latter case, spray from all the other cars made it impossible for me to see the road or its lines. It was terrifying.

    • @smartdrivetest

Most of the time--but not always--the flow of traffic is a pretty good speed to go. When the weather gets bad, traffic will slow down. If it's raining hard, work the throttle with your foot. Some times with a lot of rain, you'll hydroplane. All the best, Cheers Rick
