France's Dassault Rafale Is No Competition for the F-35

- France's Dassault Rafale Is No Competition for the F-35 - What’s new in the Rafale F4? Dassault produces three basic types of Rafales: the single-seat Rafale-C, the two-seat Rafale-B (the additional weapon systems officer being preferred for strike and reconnaissance missions) and the carrier-based single-seat Rafale-M, which has an arrestor hook, reinforced landing gear and buddy-refueling pod capability. Each type has evolved in common generations designated F1, F2, F3 and F3R.
The F4 generation introduces additional network-centric warfare capabilities and data-logistics similar to those on the F-35 Lightning, enabling Rafales on patrol to build a more accurate picture of the battlespace by pooling their sensors over a secure network, and even exchange data using new satellite communications antenna. The pilots also benefit from improved helmet-mounted displays. Авто/Мото
Got to respect the French for building their own hardware: nuclear missiles, nuclear powered aircraft carrier and jets....
missile, helicopter carrier, tanks, they build so much.… not surprising, it's the country who spent the most time at war in the history. They're good at war stuff :)
Baguette man here : thanks for your comment ! We are very proud of our military capabilities, especially the production in France of our needs. Not only do we have the best hardware in the EU, we produce our own ammunition etc. But we want to share our knowledge and hardware to the EU, mainly because of the budget but also because an EU army would be a great way to go toward more unity between our countries. This is why the French President Macron (and the previous one Hollande) with Deutschland Chancellor Merkel signed a treaty that will allow the creation and production of the future generation of fighter and tanks by four countries in the EU (France, Deutschland, Italy and Spain today).
If we achieve this goal, and to create a unified European army, it will be a great way to increase the budget overall and to make the EU a more respected "country" for its diplomatic and military capabilities.
We face many challenges in this world, especially in Europe, so the military will be a massive weapon in our hands if need be. It's sad because our continent has been to many time shred apart because of war, this is why we must achieve unity to protect our democracy, liberties and land.
@@Galadonin have to admit Europe has a very interesting history
@@ghostwarrior-ni1xb Yes Indeed, our History is a mix of sadness, greatness, domination and pride. For an exemple we remember the damage caused by the Nazi occupation and the War because our country was deeply changed by the occupation and the Résistance. Many Americans (for exemple) can't understand how we feel because they did not face war on their own land.
And we still face consequences from different wars. France and the UK have a strange relationship because there is still some kind of competition and pride, but they are one of our closest ally. This is the consequence of the Hundred years war (in the 14 century) and of course the Napoleonic wars.
@@Galadonin très belle résumé, J’apprécie ! 👍
You have to compare what is comparable. Two completely different planes with different objectives, the Rafale has proven its effectiveness in war zones, is multirole, extremely maneuverable, and agile and has one of the most important carrying capacity. The Rafale was built for the defense of France, home and overseas. Proud of my country.

Pas mieux! Prenez soin de vous!
We will work with our French allies to make Rafale's better. F-35 can go undetected and track enemies using their advanced sensors and Rafale can shoot them down with long range missiles.

No no no no no. As a proud "Froggy" you are absolutely obliged to condemn and mock the F-35! (..and any other presumptuous competitor). Shame on you! Any more of this and I'll have you put on the S list!
I'm an American and a retired Army. The Rafael is a true fighter and omni role aircraft. The F-35 is a first day strike aircraft. I love my country but the F-35 is NO match for the Rafael.
Or the Typhoon if it was to dog fight, but the F-22 would destroy both as it doesn't dog fight, it kills you at distance , might as well use a spitfire for what good a F-22 will do in a dog fight, it's one of so many jets the US have in their arsenal to do what it intended to be designed to do
@@glastonbury4304 That's what Americans say about the F22 so it's going to be biased rubbish. Typhoons and Rafales beat F22s at close and medium ranges at Red Flag and the Americans refused to take any of the jets on from long range despite the Luftwaffe and the French Air Force asking whether a BVM engagement with F22s to test the aircraft capabilities would be possible. The Americans refused to do this and banned the French from participating in future Red Flag exercises. The French then released a video of a Rafale beating an F22, annoying the Americans even more. The US clearly got worried about the capabilities of the European designs.
@@markscarisbrick1534 I think that's all fake, the Rafael's fly from US Carriers , there's huge inter military cooperation between the US and France, hardly going to ban them from red flag???...to what end??

@@generalmcarthur8401 F35 is a flying Iron. F22 (out of production) is considered as the "jewel of the crown" US jetfighter that can not be defeated and superior in a dogfight to F35. In UAE in 2009, Rafale defeated very easily F22 in a Dogfight
ruclips.net/video/KOswfrc7Xtg/видео.html
To be noted that Rafale defeated Typhoon during the same event (4 to 0 and 4 to 1).
USA has never accepted to face Rafale again with F22 or F35. So did other European countries that never accepted again to challenge the Rafale with the Typhoon.
@@jlazard2065 "Rafale defeated very easily F22 in a Dogfight" Don't lie. The F-22 never lost to the Rafale. Here's a F-22 pilot talking about how the F-22s were undefeated: ruclips.net/video/qMitljiECKg/видео.html
What's most impressive is that the F-22 pilots were rookies with less than 100 hours in the F-22.
The pilot in the video that you cited never says Splash" meaning kill. By merely saying Fox 1, Fox 2, or Fox 3, does not mean a kill, just a missile shot. The F-22's stealth has made it very difficult to get a lock onto, even in WVR.
"In air-to-air clashes, the Rafale "put sheets" on the Typhoons of the Royal Air Force, Lt. Col. Grandclaudon assures. In a degraded version, at four against four, the Rafale achieved scores of 4 to 0 and 3 to 1.
The French fighter aircraft also rubbed shoulders with the F-22, the most modern fighter of the USAF. During a game, they played each other six times, with the F-22 taking just one shot at goal. "
translate.google.fr/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fsecretdefense.blogs.liberation.fr%2Fdefense%2F2009%2F12%2Fcarton-plein-pour-le-rafale-lors-dexercices-aux-emirats.html&sl=fr&tl=en "
And then here's the pilots quotes that further clarified the above comment: "LCL G: I did not say we 'rubbed them', I said that there was only one shot claimed (ie a simulated kill) for the six that were set-up. I read in a recent issue of Air et Cosmos that it was two. As far as I am concerned, one or two shots of six Basic Fighter Manoeuvres (BFM) encounters is a victory for the F-22 but not an overwhelming one. Not like the one we claimed against the Typhoons after combat in Solenzara, Corsica during September (9 set-up: 8 to 1 for the Rafale*). The other set-ups versus F-22s were terminated for combat deck, an un-decisive situation or lack of fuel. We never shot them down, but we hope to do so soon since we are quite good opposition for them, and it is in the pilot's spirit not to give up!"
You also need to remember that the exercises were limited to dogfights and the Rafale flew clean with no ordinance. You add some weight to those wings like at wartime and that diminishes its agility, speed, and recovery from bleed.
The F-35 is no slouch, and it would have the upper hand, especially at BVR. The simple fact that its stealth makes it very difficult to get a radar lock will allow the F-35 to get the first shot off. And even in WVR, it's no slouch, especially since it flies clean, and doesn't have ordnance hanging from its wings creating drag and wing weight,. Not only does the weapons load reduce the Rafale's agility, speed, and ability to recover from high-g turns, but they also increase the Rafale's RCS, making it an easier target.
Nevertheless, I am glad that the Rafale is with an ally, and I have have no doubts that it and the F-2235 working together will have no trouble defeating any Russian threat.
@@Thetequilashooter1 the whole idea of the F-22 is not to get into dog fights, the Rafael would be dead before it knew it was being attacked

The rafale would win a guns fight but those are extremely unlikely circumstances. in a bvr fight the f35 has huge advantages. even in a close range missile fight the f35s aim 9xs can finish any maneuvering fight before it starts.
I would like to know the circumstances in which the rafale beat the f35, the excercise could have been one that it had a clear advantage in such as a bfm fight where they are both looking to get guns on one another.

The Rafale is an excellent fighter even if it isn't truly a stealth aircraft. It does not have emitters all around the aircraft for active cancellation, it's IR stealth is a myth and based on videos where the aircraft is flying slower, on lower power settings, and using a different IR camera, and plasma stealth has never been stated to ever be used for the F4 variant. All of what you speak is unsupported nonsense and it's laughable.
@Izno Iznogoud you killed it 😂😂😂 that dude just got owned
Can i let u know what happend To ur stealthy f117
@Izno Iznogoud Literally everything you said is wrong.
Spectra does not consist of 31 emitters/ receivers around the aircraft. Spectra consists of the following systems. The number of transmitters and receivers you cite is not correct or even in the ballpark. Rafale's Spectra's electronic warfare in the electromagnetic spectrum consist of standard RWRs and jammers. Thee integrated jammers cover the frontal and rear aspects of the aircraft respectively. The REB2 AESA radar on Rafale lacks the power of US AESA arrays such as APG-81. In addition, the inclusion of dedicated jamming arrays was due to the fact that the original PESA radar that Rafale had absolutely no electronic warfare capability. Thales has not advertised any built in jamming capability to the RBE2 and its low TR count of around 900 TR modules would back up my claim here. www.thalesgroup.com/en/active-electronically-scanned-array-aesa-rbe2-radar
Nonetheless, my point still stands. While rafale includes an RWR, it does not have the transmitter capability for active cancellation technology. This would require not only omni-directional receivers, but omni-directional transmitters which rafale DOES NOT have. You can actually see a detailed outline of what systems are included in the SPECTRA suite.
There are a altitude of sources claiming active cancellation technology on the Rafale. The origin of this claim is from Bill Sweetman: www.defenseindustrydaily.com/frances-rafale-05991/ who supposedly interviewed some Thales engineers who talked about it. Your source is literal hearsay. What actually happened is Thales and MBDA confirmed the use of active cnacellation technology on the F4 Rafale against the small and single-frequency arrays on Missiles. Measuring the wavelength of enemy radar and cancelling it with an opposite phase return would again, require omni-directional transmitter capabilities and radars that use the same frequency. Frequency hopping radars such as those seen on most modern fighters would render the technology useless. No plasma stealth has ever been talked about for the F4. Prideful French people will love your rebuttal because active and plasma stealth is a comfortable fiction that makes Rafale relevant on the modern battlefield, but regardless of the nonsense you talk, there is no active stealth or plasma stealth on the Rafale.
Onera did not solve issues related to plasma stealth. Again, you are speaking nonsense. Literally none of this happened and all available research proves without a doubt that everything I am saying here is correct. How dare I insult the French by suggesting they don't have technology out of a sci-fi novel. In fact, I've found you talking all over the internet about active stealth and plasma stealth. You literally never site anything credible. You just claim ONERA figured it out just because they've been at it for 10 to 15 years. www.quora.com/Will-France-try-to-develop-its-own-stealth-jet-or-decide-to-buy-F-35-stealth-plane-from-the-USA Look at you here spouting nonsense with unsubstantiated claims. You have ZERO confirmation of its application on any aircraft and at best it may be applied to FCAS and even that is unlikely. Speaking of which, why does FCAS use traditional planform alignment stealth as a means of reducing its RCS? Could it be that plasma stealth is nonsense? ABSOLUTELY.

I had the honour to work in the rafale department in Paris as an intern. This aircraft as seen more than 4000 modifications since the first prototype to make it the best military aircraft in the world. Amazing!
Thank You Dassault Aviation for Rafael. From India
You know nothing of what you're talking about. You take the US military doctrine and think of it as universel truth. Well, it doesn't work that way.
The Rafale embodies another doctrine, where, among other things, stealth characteristics are active and adaptative, as opposed to the passive approach of the F-22 / F-35. Funny you mention the Spectra system but failed to include it in your evaluation. With the Spectra system, the Rafale's radar signature is not significantly greater than that of the F-35. So in terms of stealth characteristics, it's a wash. But the Rafale is way more agile and versatile than the F-35.
When evaluated side-by-side, absent any politically motivated arm-twisting, the Rafale is considered far superior to the F-35. The Rafale is undisputadely the best versatile jet fighter in the world right now (the Typhoon is superior in air superiority missions but lacks the Rafale's versatility).
You are assuming active stealth or active cancellation technology is currently active on the Rafale, and I've seen this assertion many times. There was talk of active cancellation technology being implemented on the B-2 spirit. The way this technology works is by sending an exactly opposite out of phase signal at the incoming radio wave and thus destroying it so nothing can be reflected. The origin of active cancellation technology claims being from Bill Sweetman: a former Janes editor known for his persuit of the Aurora project. That being said, the only positive confirmation of active cancellation or "active stealth" technology being implemented on Rafale is from Thales and MBDA claiming it may be developed for the purpose of cancelling missile seekers, but not large x band arrays on fighters. www.defenseindustrydaily.com/frances-rafale-05991/ This will be implemented on Rafale F5 in the form of a pod.
Active cancellation technology is very difficult to achieve, and even more difficult to achieve against an AESA radar changing frequencies 1000 times per second. It is my opinion that the technology may be implemented for missile defense, but implementing this for general stealth into SPECTRA would be near impossible. This has also not been confirmed by any official source, nor has the effectiveness of active cancellation been documented against VLO tech on F-35. Your conclusion is little more than conjecture.
Now as for your other claims, I would like to politely debate you on that because I disagree.
1. The Rafale is not necessarily more agile or more versatile than F-35. In in clean to light air to air configuration Rafale is probably more agile, but even equipping 4 AAMs and 5,100 pounds of fuel to both aircraft results in a thrust to weight advantage to F-35A. The gap only increases in F-35's favor as more weapons are added. With regards to versatility, F-35 holds a significantly larger internal fuel volume allowing it a much greater combat radius without equipping draggy external tanks. To achieve any real combat range, Rafale needs 3 external tanks. Rafale's actual useful combat load is less than F-35. In addition to this, we know active stealth is not what you claim it to be. F-35 has the option to strike deeper in contested airspace.
2. The F-35 in pretty much every metric other than clean configured top speed and maneuverability actually comes out on top. It has more range, a higher thrust to weight ratio where it counts, larger useful weapons payload, a more comprehensive electronic warfare suite, better situational awareness thanks to DAS, internally integrated towed decoys, and a radar with 676 more TR modules than the AESA on Rafale. Not only this, but Rafale's unit price is the same, while F-35's cost per flight hour is projected to drop to near that of Rafale.
The F-35 is the better multirole platform.
Lol, did this dude just compare the stealth capabilities of this jet with a fifth generation stealth fighter? Was this post satire?
Real American at 03:40 rafales entred contested airspace in 2011 with active stealth..
@@anteeko no they didn't, thats pure nonsense. They have dedicated phased array antennas for jamming. This is not active stealth. This system is part of SPECTRA and allowed the airplane to fly alone without additional SEAD aircraft. Jammers are not active stealth. If this were the case, any aircraft equipped with the phased array radars could have "active stealth". Not only this, but Rafale does not have omnidirectional transmitters. It has passive sensors for use as missile launch detectors.

Rafale is a complement to stealth fighters, not a replacement for them. It is one of the best fighter options for this purpose, bringing impressive firepower to assist stealth fighters in combat and having lower operational cost than stealth fighters for daily patrols outside of conflicts. Rafale also has about as low radar cross section as the external stores that it carries. Anything stealthier would still be just as easy to spot when carrying external stores but cost more to maintain.
Thats why they have internal stores....

The problem i see with the F-35 is that they put all their eggs into one basket, its slow, less manuverable, poor weapons payload, short range, and when a radar is developed that is able to detect stealth aircraft it will probably be known as the flying coffin.
@@shaundouglas2057 Poor weapons payload (it has 40% more load than rafale and has a more exstensive range of missiles tha the rafale? Making it more capable at mission specific tasks than the Rafale. f-35 is far more Manuverabley in full loadout than any 4th gen jet. If the rafale is caught in a situation it dumbs its payload and fuel and would keep only its A2A missiles unlike the f-35 that would still be able to have the same capabilities in full load out. Huge differece. Also the f-35 will always have the advantage as know jet can ever sneak up on it before detection. The AI would make the tactical decision to either attack or find a find another solution to combat the threat. The f-35 is designed to survive far more than the rafale.
As for short range you do understand that the next engine upgrade is a ramjet engine that will increase speed and range? The jet also will have a drone fueling option soon that mitigates the lower range you state.
The stealth fueling drones are just one of many new tech that is already designed into the f-35 program. Lasers and magnetic pulse ordinance is also int he pipeline.
When people say the jet is not nimble they are so wrong. Every jet has trade offs but to say the jet is not good in a dogfight is a huge mistake. Its just that the f-35 does not need to rely on a dogfight. If it gets to that stage then the pilot has made multiple errors which would never happen.
Whoever can gather, process and exploit the most information in the quickest time will win the information war and ultimately the fight. With fifth generation aircraft being able to instantly share data with their fourth generation cousins they are the most effective and leathal jets in the World. @@Thetequilashooter1 The Rafale isn't a stealth airplane mate. The F35's main goal is stealth, stealth comes with a lot of drawback in maneuvrability, firepower, aerodynamism and overall performance. Therefore only useful on precise applications but I'm not an expert.
@@homelessstudio7960 I never said the Rafale wasn't stealth, which you seem to think is good. Not only does not being stealth mean its a larger target on radar, but it also means it carries its ordnance externally, creating a larger RCS, making it a larger target. From what I've seen the F-35's maneuverability is quite impressive, and so is the F-22's. A legacy aircraft has to carry its ordnance on the wings, creating wing and drag weight, reducing its agility and speed. The F-22 and 35 don't have that problem since their weapons are stored internally and neat the center of the fuselage. Of the two, the F-35 is less maneuverable than the F-22, but even so, it's still quite impressive. If you are building a "one" plain air force then the omnirole jet makes sense. BUT if like the UK or Germany you plan to have more than one combat aircraft in service, then an air dominance fighter (typhoon) and another for ground attack and ECM (F35 or f18 ) makes more Spence .
Its not just stealth its the situational awareness the plane provides. It can get closer to the enemy without revealing itself and send its data and information to friendly aircraft, making every other plane in the areas job easier. Its essentially a fighter, bomber and mini awacs all mixed into one.
@Izno Iznogoud I dont think you understand how stealth works my friend. It is to do with radar cross section and your profile within that which is provided by the aircrafts airframe shape and any weapons and hardpoints it has on it in addition. The packages added to the Rafale that they call stealth cannot hide the fact it was never designed as a stealth aircraft and it is extremely easy to detect and track on radar. Trying to compare a stealth aircraft with an internal weapons bay to a delta wing with canards and external weapons is laughable. The Rafale is nowhere near the F-35 in terms of stealth. The ROFAR is nice and can detect stealth aircraft but lots of things can detect stealth aircraft. Stealth doesnt mean invisible. It does however, mean that it is very hard for any radar to keep it locked for a long period of time, which means it cannot be shot down as any missile fired at it is getting inconsistent tracking/targeting data from the radar guiding it. The only thing the Rafale can compare to the f35 in is close range dogfighting, something the F35 was never designed for nor should it ever be in that situation. Keep in mind that whenever US stealth aircraft train with friendly countries they have external pods attached to the aircraft to make them easier to detect on radar so that the US doesnt give even their allies knowledge on the true capabilities of the aircraft.
Absolutely right. When it comes to shooting itself down with its own cannon, the Rafale fails miserably.
