Eurofighter Typhoon vs Dassault Rafale - Which would win?
Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale are two of world’s most advanced fighter jets. Both aircraft are nearly identical in size, power and performance. That brings us to the question: How do these two fighter jets measure up against each other? Let’s find out in this video.
1. Specifications
Eurofighter typhoon was first introduced in 2003. Around 570 Eurofighter typhoons have been built so far with per unit cost of $117M. The aircraft comes with single-seat and two-seat variants. The fighter jet’s empty weight is 24,251lb and it can take-off with maximum weight of 51,809lb. The aircraft is powered by two Eurojet afterburning turbofan engines, which produce around 40,000 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines the aircraft can gain top speed of 1,550mph. With ferry range of 2,350mi this aircraft can combat within the radius of 863mi. Eurofighter typhoon can climb at the rate of 1,043 ft/sec and can reach at maximum altitude of 65,000 feet. The fighter jet comes with 13 Hardpoints in addition to a 27mm revolver cannon.
On the other hand, Rafale was first rolled out in 2001. Around 175 Rafales are operated by French Air Force and various nations across the globe. At present per unit cost of the latest variant is around $83M. Operated by a crew of 1 or 2, the aircraft comes in at weight of 23,369lb and the jet can take-off with maximum weight of 54,013lb. Rafale is powered by 2 turbofan engines producing 34,000 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines the aircraft can fly at top speed of 1,381mph. With ferry range of 2,300mi, the aircraft conduct combat operations within the radius of 1,151mi. The Rafale can climb at the rate of 1,000 ft/sec and can reach at maximum altitude of 50,000ft. The fighter jet is outfitted with 14 hardpoints in addition to a 30mm autocannon.
2. Maneuverability
The Typhoon has 30 degrees instantaneous turn rate and sustained turn rate of 23 degrees. In contrast Rafale has instantaneous turn rate of 30 degrees and sustained turn rate of 24 degrees...
However, Rafale has better supersonic maneuverability in comparison to Typhoon. In terms of post stall maneuverability, Rafale can achieve 100 to 110 degrees angle of attack, while Typhoon is limited to 70 degrees…
3. Radar & Avionics
The Typhoon is equipped with latest avionics, radar and sensor fusion technology. The latest variant of Typhoon is outfitted with Captor-E active electronically scanned array radar. The radar has a full suite of Air-to-Air and Air-to-Surface modes...
On the other hand, Rafale is equipped with Thales electronically scanned array radar with multi-mode operations. The radar projects real time 3D maps for terrain following and high-resolution ground maps for navigation and targeting...
4. Firepower
The Typhoon has the capacity to carry 9 tons of payload on its 13 weapon stations. An armament control system manages weapons selection, firing and monitors weapon status...
On the other hand, Rafale can carry payloads of more than 9.5 tons on its 14 hard points. The range of weapons includes air to air, air to ground, air to sea, guided and unguided bombs. For a strategic mission the jet can deliver Storm Shadow …
5. Conclusion
Pls watch video till end for detailed conclusion w.r.t. Performance, Air to Ground, Electronic Warfare, Payload, Deep Strike, Close Air Support, BVR and Dogfight.

Im not British, not am I French. But I'd be lying to myself if I didn't say Im absolutely fascinated by the Rafale.
The French built, on their own, something that required 4 countries to build. They also found a way to reduce its production cost. That's just impressive.
It's a fact.
Well I mean they did like rob half the design from the typhoon when they worked on it
Weird... ur comment show ur ignorance so u better not share it to the world
@@weirdbritishperson9542 The design comes from the super mirage 4000 which was a prototype made before the mirage 2000 and before the typhoon was even made on paper
@@weirdbritishperson9542Check your facts, mate !
I have to admire the french, they build most of their hardware themselves, from submarine launched missiles to fighter jets to exocet's etc, etc. God knows where they get the money but they manage to do it themselves, using french technology.A proud nation of very clever people.
imagine what we would do with an actual defence budget
That for old combat systems, for now, France Bégin to work with other country, like for SCAF and MGCS the country can't finance moderne armement alone
Regarding "God knows where they get the money from" simple answer is they have borrowed it and in January 2020 ,before the virus hit the French debt to GDP was over 100%. It's now around 125% which is not sustainable. Sadly the French Public will not accept cuts to their Pensions,Benefits etc so expect to see the shit flying sooner rather than later in France...
@@syfury3403 France can finance their armament industry. If it wasn't for France cutting it's military budget from nearly 6% of GDP in 1960 to less than 2% in 2019. It's voluntarily that France successive governments lowered it's military spending in favor of mostly welfare spending.
Russia is financing their armament industry with comparable GDP to France. Only they give more money to their military expenditures. It's a choice.
@@adriansams6066 what your saying is mostly untrue. The military spending has been in steady decline for the last 70 years.it's less than half the US budget in term of percentage of GDP.
Most of the debt comes from the welfare state. France has some mind boggling welfare spending. With 56% of GDP going into public expenditures only 1.8% goes to the military. Compared to the 8.4% of Saudi Arabia or 5.6% of Israel or the 4% for the US.
You can buy 4 Rafales instead of 3 Typhoons.
Being so close in capability -- getting 4 planes instead of 3 planes is a huge difference
There's no way the Rafale is cheaper in reality than the Typhoon since the development costs of the Typhoon are borne by 4 countries instead of just 1 and there are significantly more Typhoons being made than Rafales, so the corresponding unit cost per Typhoon will also be lower.
@@eyeofthetiger6002 get ur facts right
@RogerPierre ... a Typhoon costs more than a F-22 😲
@@eyeofthetiger6002 nop, it's wrong, we have same problème with A400M share = price up hard, dont speak when you just think and you have not see.
@@eyeofthetiger6002 How dude?. When it comes to a buyer nation. Rafale is a better deal economically. Keeping aside the parent nations of these fighter jets. You are saying about total numbers in production and that's same right if eurofighters are more in number that's because it's shared by 4 nations & it's buyers. But Rafale alone is produced only for France &it's buyers. There should be some logic in what you are saying right ??? And the maintenance and operation cost is lesser for Rafale.

True, 💯💯
France wanted to go european at first
If I remember correctly (and I was preteen at the time so I may not) most of the nations in the Eurofighter program including the UK, Italy and West Germany wanted a single role air superiority fighter, France wanted a multi role fighter, French left the project to make their multi role fighter, then the Berlin Wall came down and suddenly a superiority fighter was less important so the remaining Eurofighter partners decided to convert Eurofighter to multi role, and Germany slashed their orders because they could no longer afford their full original order now that the affluent West Germany had to support the less affluent East Germany which the USSR had just handed back, which delayed the projects and drove up costs while Germany delayed finalising the design and starting production on the Eurofighter ironically in the name of reducing costs.

I’m British so I will always be in the Typhoons camp, but seriously hats off to the French for being self reliant and virtually creating the same fighter alone. Also the Rafale is spectacular at airshows too.
it's not the same fighter, Rafale is way better.
@@black_eagle_7559 No it isn't. Look at the Red Flag reports. Typhoons carry a 4:1 kill ratio over the Rafale's 1:1 against equivalent Russian jets. That's because the Typhoon was specifically designed for air superiority in an interceptor role, whilst the Rafale is omnirole. They're both awesome aircraft and in some areas, the Rafale is better, but in others the Typhoon eats it alive.
@@BedtimeStoriesChannel proof ? Because when you look at all the evaluation where the Rafale and the Typhoon was, Rafale always gets the best note

The video is great and unbiased. Thank you. Anyhow, we'll mostly never see a Rafale attacking a Typhoon, or else things would get a lot shitty between allies. Both machines were designed for a purpose. Do not forget both countries, France and Britain, were working on the same project. But at a time, Britain's objective differed from France's. Rafale is Not all alone
As they said in the Video France was in the EF-2000 Project but about when the aerodynamics and Shape of the Typhoon were set they pulled put of the project
Without the EF-2000 the Rafale wouldn't be as it is right now
The planes don't do the same job. Eurofighter is mostly an interceptor. It climbs faster, it goes faster and shot the attacking enemy plane. The Rafale is a better attack platform. It lifts off from an aircraft carrier, goes deeper, engage enemy defenses an strike.
@Gb1 lol typhoon is years behind in technology to Rafale and Gripen. Typhoon has a PESA radar and no EW capability. Rafale has had an AESA for nearly a decade and it has Spectra an EW suite that makes it very hard for enmey radars to detect and engage. Rafale proved this vs S200 in Lybia and could fly in first no problem. Typhoon could not enter airspace until Rafale and US Tomahawks cleared the AA defense. Rafale was aslo tested in Slovakia at MACE exercises in 2013 and 2018 vs S300 which could not shoot down Rafale.
Lastly Rafale and Typhoon confronted each other 18 times in exercises at Solanzara and ATLC 2009, Rafale won 16 over Typhoon.
Militaries also rate Rafale better than Typhoon. In every bid where there was Typhoon and Rafale. Rafale won. The Swiss technical test evaluations were leaked in 2011 and Rafale beat Typhoon in every scenario AA, A2G, Reco etc... Furthermore Rafale beat Typhoon in evaluations for India and Singapore bid. In fact so far Typhoon has never beaten Rafale in any evaluation to date. The only Typhoons that were sold to foreign countries was in direct govt contracts without competition (Austria, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi)
Keep drinking the kool aid. Everyone in the know which is the superior aircraft

... Both are twin engine. One of the reasons why the French Army didn’t like the Typhoon concept is that its 2 reactor’s inlets were basically together and not well separated as the Rafale concept. If objects were statistically to get into an inlet, the Typhoon would lose both engines because of its front location, while the Rafale would lose only one engine because of its side positions.
Also, the French Navy needed to replace the different types of fighter planes it had. So, the Rafale needed to be also an aircraft carrier capable aircraft, which the Typhoon was/is not.
Both aircrafts have basically the same flight range (negligible number difference), but the Rafale has a higher combat range than the Typhoon (by NOT a negligible number).
The Rafale can carry more armement and a heavier weight of weapons or accessories than the Typhoon.
Beside its high altitude capabilities (made for Air “superiority”, which doesn’t make sense nowadays since missiles can do this job) and its speeds, the Typhoon is inferior to the Rafale in most other aspects and missions (due to the omnirole concept of the Rafale, which most common people confuse with multirole concept which is not the same as omnirole).
When it comes to price and maintenance costs, the Rafale wins again.
The Typhoon is not even comparable to the fast availability (time for inspection) and modularity (change of weapons armement) of the Rafale between missions. When it’s time to change an engine quickly, the Rafale beat the Typhoon and most other comparable modern aircrafts easily.
In the real world during conflicts, beside pilots capabilities, the Rafale is a much more capable aircraft than the Typhoon. These differences have been proven in real world operations (conflicts).
When a country cannot afford financially to have many different type of aircrafts (like the US) to be able to carry different type of missions, the Rafale should be a no-brainer when it’s time to modernize its fleet, beside politics.
The rest is about the pilot’s skill and the supportive crew’s abilities in conflicts.
Also, unlike the Thyphoon, the Raphale can carry nuclear weapons (which is why Germany will be forced to buy the F-35), and its a better bomber and strike aircraft (which is why Spain won't replace its F-18s with the Thyphoon)
Greetings from Spain.

Eurofighter typhoon is **multirole**. It means that it can do anything, as soon as you load it with the desired payload. But in flight, it executes a sole mission, whereas Rafale is an **omnirole** fighter, so it can execute any mission in the air.

From an air interceptor standpoint, which is most important for UK, the typhoon is noticeably better. As an all round package there is little to choose. Personally I do admire the french for going their own way and supporting their industrial defence base so strongly.
Yes for interception the eurofighter typhoon is better because it is faster but the Rafale also has many advantages and is better in bombardment (which is perfectly suited to current missions) and in air combat! Besides, the majority of the exercises opposing these two planes were won by the Rafale! In short, these are two really good planes that have different pros and cons and I wouldn't say one is actually better than the other!
The rafale is good for what it was built for that's air to ground not air superiority, at bvr the typhoon would anialate the rafale because its to slow its climb rate is poor and its service ceiling is rubbish, as a air superiority fighter you need speed height to get the advantage and the rafale doesn't have that.
@@terrywainman6050 Even if the Rafale didn't have this he often won and never lost against a Eurofighter Typhoon in Dogfigth! So even for air superiority the Rafale can compete with the Eurofighter Typhoon because it is more maneuverable even if it is slower.
@@baptbert043 when the rafale beat the typhoon it was about 8 years ago! The typhoon has had many upgrades since then putting it well in front of the rafale, it cannot bet the typhoon at bvr because the rafale is not a air superiority fighter like the typhoon, the rafale is to slow and can only go to 50 or 55,000 ft which is no good the typhoon can go beyond 65,000ft and climb to that height in 60 seconds. As I've said before nobody wants to buy the rafale except India because of those reasons.

Yes complete logistical nightmare and i doubt theyr are very well trained or intend to use the. They bought them for political goodwill ;)
For the record the reasons why Qatar purchased three different Multi-Role Fighter aircraft designs from three different nations no less is because of their decision to openly support the Iranian President. They decide to Diversify to the Maximum by purchasing the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Rafale and the Typhoon so in wartime or any crisis they would be covered.

Don't know why Egypt and Turkey would be in conflict so can't believe it is true.
F22 and F35 are both more advanced than all 4th + gen aircraft. But SU 57 is not in mass production and lacks true stealth. Well, I'm German and I was a soldier at the time the Eurofighter and the Rafale were developed. I was sad when the French chose to leave the program because I felt the Eurofighter lost some VERY valuable insights.
On the other hand, I really did understand that the French wanted their new aircraft soon and, at the time, the Eurofighter went through one delay after another because of political quarrels and significant mismanagement of the project. So I really understood France for leaving.
Currently, I would buy Rafale if I were leading a country and looking for a new fighter.
First - purely for cost-efficiency a 4/3 ratio is just too much to ignore.
Second - upgrading the Eurofighter suffers from delays just like its development did. The radar is a generation behind and the countries are not willing to really keep the plane at the peak of technology. They act to slow and shy from necessary investments. France does not do that. For a single country they to their best to keep the plane at the top.
Third - France is known for its willingness to react to customer wishes rapidly which can sadly not be said for the Eurofighter consortium.
And lastly, I would prefer an aircraft build in my country and if I could not get that I would go for an aircraft build in just one country. Much less hassle.
I love the Typhoon and so buying the Rafale would be a very reflected decision, my feelings would be to buy Typhoons.

@@88Kanyezz please dont speak of a plane that still does not exist. french have a similar program with the germans. Moreover the bvr missiles used by these planes are the same and designed by mbda.
you will think it is funny but max speed is not that important. minimum speed is far more important. a missile can catch the eft or rafale without any difficulty...
French initially joined the Typhoon development. They left the project because they knew exactly that they could make better one. Hence Rafale was born. 🇫🇷💪
They left because they wanted a naval capable fighter
@@FullThrottleRacing535and also because they wanted an omnirole aircraft, while the typhoon was initially designed to be an air superiority aricraft
INDIA 🇮🇳 WELCOME RAFALE 🙏💝
The Gripen E and the Dassault Rafale are my two top choices!

Rafale easy.
He can climb almost as good as the Typhoon.
Can ACTUALLY detect it faster.
Is a straight up better dogfighters for Close Combat.
He can use more payloads and that is pretty damn important in a combat situation.
theyre both good jets but they eurofighter does a different job, its an interceptor while the rafale can engage enemies better
But can't go beyond 50,000 feet. BIG disadvantage. Hugely vulnerable against planes that can.
@@miyahtallulah someone gets it 🙌
Are you mad!!? The price of two planes is also indicating what's the differences between them!🙂
@@hasibulhasanhasib1186 Greece paying $250 million for each new jet . India paying $260 m per Rafale .... cheap ?
The Rafale has been beating the Typhoon in every duel. Period.
That's not even true, the Typhoon is better in every way possible, have you seen the video? Lol
TIL that Austria basically kept its Typhoon 2 decades, and already try to replace them. Man, except the Brits, who even like that plane bro ? think..
@@lam2083 Thats a ridiculous statement. And so untrue.
Erf& rafale the best
Love from indonesia:)
I put my card on RAFALE!!!🙏
Most dangerous things that even jets fear to conquer is Birds 😂😂.
These 2 Aircraft dont even have the same role. The Eurofighter is a Intercepter used mainly as a defender air superiority fighter.
The Eurofighter is designed to opperate at very high altitudes (over 30000 feet) at very high speeds and to be highly manouverable in trans and super sonic speeds and mostly fight BVR.
The Rafale is an Aircraft carrier based attack fighter. Designed to opperate under 20000 feet and the be highly manouverable at very low speeds. The Main mission here is to be a weapon delivery platform. Carrying nuclear weapons was one of the prime objectives.
Its just really stupid to compare these 2
Dassault Rafale is the best as compared to eurofighter typhoon
Is it because Modi bought half a dozen Rafales? Let's call spade a spade and not a big spoon!!
@@mohamedmohamud9691 Atleast modi can buy, for ur so called half a dozen. Ur IQ is horribly low, check his reply first what he said. Just making a sarcastic comment won't help you.
DINS DXB that said, you can’t just literally say that “one is better than the another.” Each one of them have their own pros and cons, and we all know that. Rafale could be a better ‘multirole’ fighter but it’s not the best in exactly a single role, talking about air-superiority. In that case, the Typhoon is better with higher service ceiling, better thrust/weight ratio (you have to agree that the Rafale is underpowered, since it carries more payload but has less thrust than the Typhoon) and sustained turn rate. For Bangladesh Air Force, 16 BAe Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche-3A is going to be the best option for us. For Maritime Strike Aircraft Dassault Rafale can be a good option for us, along with F/A-18E/F. Listen, i’m not bashing any aircraft here, i love and respect both aircrafts equally, see my profile picture is of a QEAF Dassault Rafale C, one of the most beautiful liveries on a beautiful aircraft! :)
@@Acepilot1312 I can say literally Rafale is better. It's my view. As far as your buying for BAF is concern when you actually buying it then speak to me.
DINS DXB by that i mean i am not that knowledgeable in this Rafale vs Typhoon context. You can never say that something is 100% better than the other. So, you say Rafale is better, i say Typhoon is better. Or, at-least 100X more than enough for us.
TYphoon was build as an interceptor while Rafale is multi role
lol OMNIROLE no MULTIROLE XDDDD
@@tetauruhatitio840 Omni means everything, so Rafale can do 2 things more than Gripen;
1. Land on an aircraft carrier
2. Drop a nuclear bomb
Sweden don't have an aircraft carrier and won't drop the bomb ( the plane could though ) .
Not much difference then. Gripen has a larger weapons choice ( Omni choice ) and is cheaper.
@@NATObait omnirole is a gimmick. Landing on a carrier is a modification that can be made to any aircraft with sufficiently STOL. That's alot of jets, but rarely would one do so. The deployment of nuclear weapons is not an ability of the jet itself but the delivery vehicle it carries.
@@deven6518I like your comments. The Rafale M was an expensive luxury with only 44 units produced and zero export wins. Don't believe it's as good as the Super Hornet either and certainly no comparison in cost terms.
@@deven6518 le coping est réel haha
the Typhoon is more expensive Four rafales for three typhoons
so you chose rafale right or what
Operation costs don't scale up the same though. Training an extra pilot, logistics for an extra aircraft and so on add up really fast.

Both are magnificent high-quality 4th gen fighter jets. Depending on their needs, any country can choose between an interceptor or a multi-role fighter jet.

@@clockworkolive8533 nope lol

Rafale is more of a fifth gen jet, especially thanks to SPECTRA.
@@sosobel5843 Rafale is 4.0 gen, not even close to 5.0 don't talk bs
I guess India picked the Rafale because it packs more "Bang!" for the Buck. To Hell with collateral damage.
India chose the cheaper aircraft.
If it chooses cheaper aircrafts, then why didn’t it go for Gripen?
SAAB is busy helping Brazil build our Gripens. XD
But honestly, it is also a political decision, probably. I mean, India was a british colony, so the best way to offend the british is buying french! XD
Tehn00bA your argument doesn’t makes any sense. India has purchased aircrafts from Britain before. SAAB offered Gripen to India in MMRCA 1.0 and MMRCA 2.0 but India rejected it. Lockheed Martin also offered F-21( upgraded version of F-16, and modified according to the requirements of IAF), it was cheaper than Rafael but it too was rejected.
The main motive behind acquiring Rafael was to have a ground attack Aircraft to replace the ageing fleet of Mirages and Jaguars. For Air superiority SU-30MKI is quite good.
Eurofighter Typhoon is an air superiority fighter, and India doesn’t really need more aircrafts for Air superiority. Further, Italy is a part of Eurofighter project, so its struggling economy and closeness with China would have caused some issues for India.
French are offering technology transfer with Rafale, so India can also use many of those technologies in HAL MK2 and AMCA.
@@Ilovepineapple dude, it was a joke. Chill.
But seriously though, about the technology transfer, Brasil also had that with Saab, so it was an option for them too. We rejected the sukhois because of that and because its an old aircraft, although capable and didn't fit our needs since we aren't as concerned with air superiority. Do you happen to know why India rejected the Gripen (since they probably also offered the tech transfer like they did with brasil)?
I love Rafale jet fighter....🇲🇾🇲🇾
We'll get answer when Typhoon will leave meetings and will start to fight....
@Gb1 Typhoons belong to Airbus :))
As a neutral Asian, I prefer the Rafale to Eurofighter. Because of its versatility, cheaper to operate, better reliability and availability, upgraded recently. There are few advantages of Eurofighter over Rafale like agility and speed. But in war against China or Russia, Rafale seems to be more useful. No wonder that Rafale is selling well recently.
