- Late-era SNES game that was clearly made to be a tad less complicated than the usual Koei fare.

Can't wait for the video ranking all Koei games on SNES once you finish reviewing them all :)
The list would be, the very koei is Nobunaga Ambition and tbe highest less koei is innindo or uncharted waters 2
YES!!
Koei made Great Games
@@davidpalmer5967Koei was the Nintendo version of a punk band. They only have one game and pretend it's many
Gemfire is awesome
I like that someone is going through giving these old Koei strategy games some love. I can’t wait for the eventual Romance Of The Three Kingdoms video
Well, now I want a Koei-style simulation of the dying days of the territory era of pro wrestling.
TEW 2008 with Death of the Territories Mod.
Pride vs K1 vs UFC too please!
Would probably have to be rated R given everything that's come out about Vince McMahon!
❤
How has there not been a wrestling rpg or action/rpg
Whenever I think about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, I think about a friend of mine who started one of these games, ages ago. They named one of the characters Deer Xing. LOL
I wish that Koei had leaned harder into simulation games like Aerobiz. All they needed was a banger soundtrack and some pixel portraits and they could have gotten me hooked on carnival operating or Christmas tree farming or basically anything.
Simulation games were amazing in the 90s. Japanese flavoured once would have been very cool. I can't imagine Japan making games about normal working class jobs in the same way as British Devs though. What is the Japanese Trashman?
Aerobiz was good, but then Aerobiz Supersonic was far better.
Everything that was wrong with the first got fixed. Supersonic is still a banger.
@@seamon9732 Yeah, absolutely! Supersonic perfected an already great game.
Aerobiz games ftw
Man Aerobiz and Gemfire need remasters or Remakes.
But KOEI is not doing such things.
Like Picasso's Blue Period, we're getting this artist's Koei Period.
I really appreciate a reviewer who is willing to try to appreciate genres where they might be out of their depth. I've seen too many people who can only refer to media that's not their thing with mockery or dismissal.
Yeah, because lord knows he totally didn't make himself sound exactly like that kind of person in the first 2 minutes.
I can only muster up so much respect for someone when their overall reluctance to give it a fair shot is predicated largely by "Maaaaaaan, I mean I guess if I HAVE to...."
@@teruienages962 so you'd rather he lie about how he feels about the game and pretend to absolutely love it, with that all being one big fabricated lie? I bet you actually enjoy IGN reviews, don't you? You're one of _THOSE_ people...
@@teruienages962But he didn't have to.
@@teruienages962lord knows there is plenty of commenters sounding like bitches in the comments. Talking about you my guy!
@@teruienages962 He likes the game though & even recommends it.
Can't believe you don't play Koei for the beard simulation. Casual 😅
2:45 - Now THAT is a reference
lol.
Random WWF references are the best.
I only watch SNES Drunk videos to listen to the "I hope you have a great rest of your day".
I don't watch them ONLY for that but... that is about half the pleasure! :D
As a 43 year old who knew about, and skipped Koei games, this actually looks playable!
I may try it one day.
Thank you, Ssssssssnesdrunk!!
May I quickly say how much I like how every video from you ends with "I wanna thank you for watching, and I hope you have a great rest of your day!". Makes me smile every time ✌
I like how even this late in the game you can still find a SNES game at the bottom of the barrel that I've never heard of - even if there's mostly Koei games left.
I used to be a hardcore Koei nut and this is somehow one of theirs I never heard of, so that's amazing.
I had the same thought
2:44
Warlord !!!
I literally just found my old 90s WWF figure of him yesterday 😂
Thanks for continuing to upload. Your channel is such a joy!
Another Koei Klassic...lol. No lies told when "all their games look and play the same"...but respect to Koei...they knew their niche/fanbase and catered to them. I've maybe played 2-3 koei games in my life.
I loved playing this with my bro, but it always ended the same way; one on one combat challenge, winner takes all.
Looks like a 16 bit Destiny of an Emperor which was an absolute hidden gem for the NES!
it might look like it at a glance but Rise of the Phoenix was not much like Destiny of an Emperor. Destiny is more like a classic turn-based tile-based RPG in the 3 kingdoms setting. Rise of the Phoenix if anything is closer to romance of the 3 kingdoms
I love Koei. There's nothing else quite like it.
Every video has been more interesting than the previous one, thanks SDrunk for sharing more KOEI goodness ✌🏼 Also it would fun to see a full chart of Koei games and where they fit, that would very strategic 😅
This game is so obscure and uncommon that I forgot it existed. Only seen it a couple times in the past 20 years.
I love starting my day with a new SNES video. Thanks!
I look at my RUclips subscriptions and I see two videos covering strategy games. This video and masahiro Sakurai's video on game essence in strategy games. Today's truly a red letter day for strategy game fans. Lastly, congratulations on 300,000 subs. You totally earned it with your quality work.
So glad you are reviewing KOEI games!
Yep, we're definitely getting a 13 best Koei Games for SNES video in the not so distant future.
KOEI is one of my favorite developers, how did i not know about this game?!!!? The ROTK games are phenomenal
Congrats on 300k!
Always happy when your content shows up
Being able to redirect a river as terraforming strat on a game from this era let alone as a SNES title is kind of insane.
I'm thinking of how pared down SimCity (SNES) was, or even SimCity DS and the depth of content in Rise of the Phoenix looks quite impressive. Props to Koei!!
Congrats on 300k 🍻
I'm impressed with your pronunciation of Liu Bang.
Holy moly, Drunk! You are slowly but steadily becoming the Koei-RUclipsr!!
Congrats on 300K subs, brother!
Thanks for always broadening my SNES-game horizon. :)
My officers like "Nobody does it better" by Carly Simon.
I am always happy to see a Snes drunk video in my recommendations
What a nice way to start my day, with a video of yours
Nice to see some koei strategy games Getting some attention I’ve always wanted to see someone do a retrospective on them
Absolutely crazy that I think you actually got me to give this one a try
Keep dropping the Koei games! Love these!
I want to thank you for uploading, and I hope you have a great rest of your day
I come here for the wrestling references and stay for the Super NES game reviews.
I loved this game as a kid.
Thanks for the awesome video.
I have really been enjoying this Koei focus - I haven’t heard of half of these and they look wonderfully complex!
Kessen II was so great.
I love your content 🎮
Love your videos man, can't wait until you do Aerobiz
I would love a video or a series showing all the "must play" snes games based on today's standards and categorized by genre.
It does look pretty cool to me. I'll have to add it to my list of games I need to find a copy of. I like strategy games, both complex and simple varieties.
Love this Koei kick your on! I recommend you check out Gengis Khan 2 next. It’s game I still like to come back to 30 years later. Amazing replayability
Drunk is on quite the Koei kick lately! That animation of firing arrows looks like you're just gently tossing a bunch of sticks at them! 😂
Ohh, I actually played this. It was incredibly tedious to learn but entertaining once I got the hang of it.
Glad Mr Drunk intends, or implied that he will, look into other similar games. Let's go.
I would love to see more Koei games being review by you.
Enjoying this dive into the obscure Komi strategy games. Nobody talks about these.
1:29 Haven't Got Time for the Pain.
Never could get into Nobanaga's Ambition. I tried a few times, but it was just rough going. Genghis Khan 2 is probably the most player friendly of the medieval/ancient war simulation games with very simplified stats and just enough city management to not be overwhelming while focusing on war a lot more. Romance of The Three Kingdoms 3 and 4 are the most immersive and appeal most to the player who wants to manage everything, but can be a bit much for the casual gamer.
Man, I never heard of this game, and I had bought a lot of KOEI 16-bit stuff even when gaming was moving onto SegaCD, Playstation 1, etc. I was quite fond of KOEI games in the 1990s and up to the mid-2000s.
i could only ever get into romance of the three kingdoms 2 when i was a teenager. tried other koei games on the snes but found that there was way too much to manage and keep track of. so you are definitely right about that, its much nicer to play them when you dont have like 50 different resources to manage. i really wanted to like romance of the three kingdoms 3 and 4 but found that i had the same trouble with those games too, just was infinitely more things to keep track of so it became much more tedious to play instead of fun.
Great job thanks
The Warlord only ever lost by DQ or count-out. He either squashed a jobber or got DQ'd by Slick or Slick's pimp cane lol.
Love this pixel art here
A graph or bulleted list of how all these Koei games compare would be cool to see.
I like the way this game ties in to Mortal Kombat, Liu Bang is Liu Kang's 4th generation ancestor
Four generations in 2200 years? The Liu clan have _long_ lives!
@@23Scadu Exactly!
Well isn't Liu Kang a zombie now? It's easy to have long lasting generations when you can come back from the dead.
@@23ScaduLiu Kang has defeated some of the strongest individuals in the whole realm of Mortal Kombat, him living long isn't a strange occurrence when you're literally beyond superhuman at this point, same goes for his ancestors
@@TheCheeseMovesSideways 🎯
I remember renting this at Mr. Movies whenever it was available. This game was amazing!!
This reminds me of this DOS game I played with my siblings as a kid. It was called "Warlords"
"What Carly Simon song one general likes" LOL that got me.
I never found Koei's SNES games quite that bad, but I recall trying to play their PS2-era games and by that point there was so much blather that I didn't even have a basic idea what I was doing.
I love the old KOEI strategy games! I never played this one
We're are officially deep into SNES drunk's Koei grand strategy arc.
Awesome review!!lol Please review Aerobiz!❤
Maximum Koei is such a funny sentence, and it makes sense
nobunagas ambition and romance of the three kingdoms were my favorite
It's difficult to get enthusiastic about yet another Koei game that involves conquering China. About 2/3 of Koei games were either about conquering China or Japan.
Hey, there's always Genghis Khan 2! You either conquer the Mongol steppes or everything from Japan to England 😂
Back then, those early ones were really rough around the edges, but also pretty unique (for NES and then SNES at least) so any iteration on those was really appreciated. So when rise of the phoenix or a new ROT3K game came out it was actually really appreciated. I think this is a case of these kinda games....you had to kinda be there to appreciate them.
I get that. If I was there in ancient China, this game would amaze the heck outta me
Thank you snes drunk your the best !
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. I had to force myself to stop playing it after beating it 4 times when I had it emulated to a tablet like 8 years ago. I played 2 when I was younger, got addicted, and have now read the old Chinese novels it's based on 3 times. I had the same addiction issues with Romance of the Three Kingdoms 10 when I had it on PS2 years ago. I wish Koei still made games that great because the last few have been mediocre, and I found Total War: Three Kingdoms to be too complicated. And yes, I know Total War isn't Koei, but I was very excited when I got it.
lol RoTK 3 is still in my top 10 games overall. I've beaten it over the years with every ruler at least once over every scenario. Same with reading the books and such as well :)
Ever hear of play a game by Capcom called Destiny of an Emperor? It was their (probhably) first RPG on the NES and what got me to rent (and then love) RoTK as a kid till today. It's a turn based RPG that focuses on Liu Bei's story from Yellow Turbans up until he takes Shu. Then it quits following the novel and does it's own thing so that you can unify China under him.
I still play that game and mods of it occasionally.
@@michaeljohnston9944 I love Destiny of an Emperor!!!!!! Did you know there is a sequel? I think its Japanese only though.
RTK8 is getting a HD release from Koei eventually, it'll likely scratch the RTKX itch.
I think RotK X is the masterpiece of the franchise, but III and IV are great, too!
Played the most of 7 and 8; but the newest XIII is pretty cool. They also shoehorned it onto the switch.
Hah! I love the Koei Scale. As someone who grew up playing PTO, AeroBiz, Uncharted Waters, and Rise of the Phoenix, this series is warming my heart.
that was my first thought when I saw the video thumbnail, "bah, another one of those KOEI games!"
My parents used to blast the Carly album with the itsy bitsy spider song when I was trying to go to sleep.
On the plus side. I can fall asleep no problem as an adult.
I loved this game when I was a kid.
General Chang was really into Carly Simon.
Drunk is very close to reviewing my favorite strategy game of the 16-bit era - Utopia
Games like this always interested me as a kid, because I was a nerd. But I never got one because they were always expensive, even used, and if I couldn't figure a game out, my stepdad made me play it till it actually did feel like homework.
Wow! Tenacious D in the channel!!
The Carly Simon comment made my day. 😂
Seems like Koei were basically the Paradox of their day, without the $500 in DLC and microtransactions for every game
Don’t think I could play this today, but their Warriors Orochi series is solid
KOEI games back in the day were the Dynasty warriors of their time with slight alterations or setting but the same basic gameplay for strat fans. And I just found out I could use the SNES mouse on this. LOL
At long last - the entry level Koai game has been found!!!
0:16 The cover says “Two warriors, One China”, so I don’t think it’s a game about feudal Japanese warriors 😄. Plus the names are clearly Chinese if you’re into Asian languages😁.
SnesDrunk...the patron Saint of really such Koei games .... Drunk, last time I bugged you , sorry for that , but man, why ? U are the gold standard of snes , u sir didn't leave a stone unturned , so u are expected to so such games now, no shame.
the theme music sounds like something straight out of super metroid
Playing with the SNES Mouse I see. Nice.
"Diverting rivers" sounds interesting. How does that work?
SNESdrunk never fails to
Nice use of Minutiae
You jest, but nothing stirs up those feudal Chinese troops before battle better than listening to James Taylor and Carly Simon belt out a rendition of Mockingbird.
koei seems awesome
Dang, Warlord catching strays...
i would have never even picked up this box at blockbuster as a kid, but id gladly give it a whirl now that I'm 40
I don't think I'm dad enough to get into those old-school strategy games LOL.
Gemfire is going to be the one that either hooks you or it doesn't.
You will get older, time is comming for you.
