And it's another case of a game victimized by nobody actually playing it! Because despite everyone parroting the same wrong opinion about Ys V, this game's actually kind of fantastic! Completely unlike the non-Falcom SNES Ys titles, Ys V's got a real solid artstyle all its own, a *banging* OST, and some really soulful customization mechanics to boot. And while yeah, this non-'expert mode' is generally pretty easy - and yeah, there ain't no more classic Ys bump combat from here going forward - you can easily mitigate the issue by simply spacing equip upgrades out bi-townly. The ease isn't due to lack of enemy variety, and they're actually generally decently hard to dodge, so just keeping yourself a tad bit behind is all it takes to make for a real decent seven-hour experience. And it really is quite decent in every respect, from a really cool overworld treasure system - where generic but valuable craftables can be found by simply grinding into suspicious corners - to the superfluous but not unfun magic system they integrate with - where that findable loot can be crafted into a variety of goofy overly-animated spells, all with the 'what does this do?' aspect of Chrono Trigger dual techs - all the way to a multi-tiered environment design that frequently pits you against super fast enemies demanding quick jumping and blocking before counterattacking right back, thus making that constant sense of exploration and reward actually demand some level of player agency throughout. The dungeons are legitimately cool too - with lots of little semi-hidden passages and miniature combat challenges sprinkled in throughout - and while the spriting doesn't pop QUITE as much as something like Terranigma, it's still got a way more vibrant color pallete than you'd ever expect from a game title so desert-themed. I'll allow that you are still losing out on the TGX era's custscenes and voice acting - and there's a section or two where the game pretty blatantly just had a level cut, like when you're stranded with the bandit girl for all of five seconds - but this game's otherwise wholly on par with the better chunk of the SNES RPG library, and stands head and shoulders above its preceding 'Mask of the Sun'. It really does seem a shame it's been so cast aside even by the minority of hardcore Ys fans out there, and if I had my way I'd get far more to give this a try. I mean hell, even Aeon Genesis didn't seem to experience the thing in full; I found a hidden NPC halfway through what unlocks the ability to customize Adol's hair color pallete, but the entire interface was left entirely untranslated! Thing's soulful as heck and got done dirty by time. E; Though all that being said, I'm still downgrading it from an 8/10 to a 7/10... because the game's last 25% in Kefin itself is kinda rushed and sucky. @@rossdixonellis I like it too. It's certainly not a bad game and is fine mechanically and design wise. It's just that when put up against the rest of the Ys series, which is the greatest action RPG series of all time, it sticks out like an infected sore thumb, lol.
Not long after Ys V launched, Falcom got a lot of unhappy feedback about the game and the released Ys V Expert as a completely new SFC release. May want to check that out.
IIRC, Expert never got a fan translation. Unless he speaks Japanese? Also, IIRC, the only thing that changed was rebalancing, so just more grinding and more difficult bosses.
I just discovered this series, and I'm absolutely addicted. Here's hoping you finish this series, cause there's other systems I'd like to see you do this for!!!! Love it~!
I was actually hoping to see this one, as I've been playing through the Ys games recently and I never see anybody talking about it. When I got the notification I went "Oh nice". Also, glad that the tier list isn't being completely retired, as I always stick around for that and really like it.
Ys V is so ignored that it's the only Ys game that Falcom have never bothered to remake. (We don't talk about the Konami games.) It seems like even they don't want to deal with it, or try to find a way to turn it into a game that's actually good.
I assume you mean the Taito games! The only Konami Ys games are the PS2 and PSP ports of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, and the PS2 port, at least, is... fine, if a bit ugly. Taito are the ones who remade Ys III, IV, and V for PS2, though, and yeah... those are trash! (Though strangely, Taito also ported Falcom's "Zwei!!" to PS2, and they basically just did a very faithful port of the PC game. So Taito was clearly able to release decent Falcom content, as long as they left it alone and didn't try to put their own spin on it! Heheh.) (Incidentally, Ys I & II were ported to PS2 as well, but not by Taito or Konami -- rather, they were ported by DigiCube, of all companies! And the PS2 version of Ys I & II is pretty decent. It's a bit technically... jittery... and the load times are kind of long in spots, but the new content is pretty cool, and the rest of the game is basically just a straight port of Ys I & II Complete for PC, but with added voice-acting. Not the best version of Ys I & II by any means, but an interesting one that's worth a look, at least!)
When you talked about the game's structure with regard to the final area, i actually thought of a number of action games that are like this with enormous last levels. Metal Slug 3 & Shatterhand are great examples here.

I'm glad I discovered this channel. SNES RPGs are my jam, and I fantasized about playing all of them in my retirement. So probably never. I think you might have more success with the tier list analytics if they were in separate videos. Maybe every five or so games, do a video where you add them to the tier list and explain your reasoning for why. People actually eat up those tier lists, but only if the video advertises them as such.
This is honestly the one that needs a remake the most out of the entire series. I bet they'll do it eventually, especially seeing that it wasn't released in the West in any way. Maybe even right after Ys X, you never know.
Totally agree, would love to have the odd game with a bump combat system every now and then, yeah its simple but its work and i can turn my brain off while seeing my number go up. Pressing A is just to much after a long day at work sometimes 😅
YSV is the worst kind of disappointing game. Where the idea was sound and you can clearly see the effort, but unfortunately they didn't put the effort for where it counted. It reminds me of games like Startropics 2 or Tales of Phantasia, and not in a good way. If enemies had modestly more complex patterns and the spells were instead, say, combat maneuvers like in Terranigma they could've had something despite the simple design. Alternatively, if the dungeon design was more clever, like in BrainLord or Lufia 2, they could've had something here too. Just either of them would've saved this game.
There was an Ys V remake, though not made by Falcom. Arc System Works did PS2 remakes of Ys III, IV, and V. None of these came to the US and all are generally considered to be pretty bad, and of course none of considered "canon" by Falcom today. Most Ys stans expect there to be an Ys V remake some day, but since this is Falcom which is lucky to put out one new game a year we also expect it to be a loooooong wait. And the remake, if it happens, will be a complete overhaul in the same way that Oath in Felghana is hugely different from Ys III. Anyway Ys is great and I envy those who still have the series in front of them. Have fun!
@@bobbyo5807Ys VI, Ys Origin and Ys III Remake are all built on the same engine. If you want a good, fast paced, top down ARPG, all three are fantastic.
I find it funny how Ys V is apparently one of those games that have yet to be remade in the new canon or whatever, meaning the official Ys timeline just has this big gap where Ys V would go, almost as if they're embarassed by the game's existence to acknowledge it. The last remake it got was back during the PS2, and it wasn't much better than the original.
I am finding out so much about games I passed on, some of them I'm going to have to go back and try, others I'm glad I avoided. Would love if you would cover Star Ocean on the SNES.
I actually liked Ys V on SFC. I feel like it’s still an above average action RPG on the Super Famicom. I’m not too bothered by the difficulty since I don’t really go for twitch-perfect reflex difficulty in games. Grinding out magic is tedious, however, and I only ever bothered with 3x fire which was a screen clearing attack. There’s one boss fight where you can use magic but there’s no indication of it. I would like to see a remake- the best engine would’ve been the Napishtim engine but alas, at this moment we’d likely see one based on Ys X’s engine.
I loved Ys V. I was worried with the art style change and gameplay change. And yeah the series had a bit of an identity crisis for that game, but honestly judging the game itself it's a great game and in my opinion a better game that even Ys III and SNES Ys IV, the PC Engine Ys IV on the other hand is one of the best Ys games to this day. The last third the game is basically a different game. The whole last third of the game is one massive super complex highly interconnected dungeon, it was fantastic, easily as good as some Zelda dungeons even.
Hey man really enjoyed this one and the Robotrek review. I was wondering, are you gonna review EVO: The Search for Eden in this series? Its definitely more action than RPG but there's RPG elements and its from Enix. The game just has such a mystical vibe. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on it
Always so weird for me to look at the older Ys games. I came into the series later so looking at these is jarring. On another note, I didn't even know the fact that people clicking off a video towards the end messes with analytics. I tend to avoid looking at my analytics cause it might change how I do things subconsciously for better or worse. The most I'll ever see is the first page and the comment section in the channel dashboard. It probably is for the best for people to just talk towards the end rather than have a send off which is why I started to see patron shoutouts in the middle of a video rather than the end nowadays
The best action RPG ? Darn no doubt : action turn based RPG Tales of Destiny or Tales of Phantasia on SNES... well on Super Famicom, only in ROM on SNES emulators cuz it was never ported here... but it's the best, just perfect! Seiken Sensentsu 3 as well like Teranigma is one that eluded the North American fans like us! So I pick Secret of Evermore as runner-up , cuz Secret of Mana is the underdog hated one noewadays... Illusion of Gaia had no levels and stats deep enough, no replaying places (limited like Vandal Hearts)
I would lift Lufia 1 tier and I am surprise that Robotek is so low, I need to rewatch your video because I enjoyed the story and the dungeon but found the gameplay a bit grindy. Definitely belong on the same row as Illusion of Gaia, even if I don't really consider IoG an RPG. Edit: Video rewatched and I see, the game just worked for me back in the day, I am also really hype up for any RPG that is in a modern day setting, so maybe it just clicked with me more.
I think it deserves some bonus points for the graphics, but otherwise… yeah understandable. Do you know how the Expert version compares? It appears to be much more sought-after.
If people enjoy the tier list do you think it'd be a good idea to put it in the beginning of the video instead and then lead off with why it's going there? Might be a good hook
Just because I am so bored by Gen Z NPC shit: "Wake up, babe, new Jason Graves video just posted, let's goooo, I spit out my Celsius energy drink FRFR, nocap."
Where is Tecmo Secret of the stars on this tier list??? It'S a weird one, but levelling all the side characters (kusteras) with the weird nuns, boxers and other lions , your party can be fun sometimnes, more than the Aquatalions
doesn'T YS V feel like a less clkunky Brain Lord?? Or a well made "LAgoon" ? A deeper "soulblazer" ? I only played Wanderer From Ys III on SNES... completed it about 4 times. Love the music. Hate crouching to kill slimes for hours.,..
I like Brain Lord a lot more because of the dungeon design, and there's something about returning to one town the whole game which endears you to it. In this it's like everything happens so fast, you only spend 30-45 minutes in each area so none of them really have a chance to become memorable.
Also : have you ever thought of doing the hidden SNES rpg legend : Final Fantasy Legend III.... cuz it is a Super Game Boy game.... you can't play this to its value on Gameboy... this game is as deep as FF iv with world changing events ,m and different planes of existence alsmost (SAGA 3, I know, but play this if you haven't !!! it's a 8/10!)
Are you certain Saga 3 is a Super Game Boy enhanced game? going through lists and testing it myself, I can't find a shred of evidence for that. Or do you just mean it's RPG game on par with SNES RPGs?
Losing the Bump combat definitely took away from the games appeal. Falcom eventually made more amazing action rpgs with the following games, but this was definitely a mediocre bump in the road to much better games.
Man, Ys V is so uninspired. I LOVE this entire series... except for this game. I don't hate it, but nothing is great. I wonder how the PS2 remake is but whatever. I like the field of gale music though... but is it a good field song? Or is it a completely average field song that I happen to like? I think it's a completely average field song. If I covered every ys game's music I'd probably place Ys 5 last on stuff I want to learn how to play.
I was playing both the PS2 and SFC games concurrently and ended up just continuing on SFC. It wasn’t just the language barrier; Adol just feels better to control in the SFC version. I wouldn’t bother with the PS2 version unless if you really want to have more Dogi in your life.
I always thought the identity of Ys was just about adventure, and combat had nothing to do with it. It was just Falcom's early attempt at action combat inspired by their own first ARPG Panorama Toh. But I agree, the bump system was surprisingly fun and Ys V was was a letdown compared to its predecessors. Great review! Also sorry but... It's pronounced "ees" as in "geese" You don't pronounce the "Y"
It's been a long-running gag in this series, he'll keep switching the pronunciation of it over time. You missed when he was pronouncing it like the letter Y, haha
If you ever do want to give it another shot, I'd recommend trying either Ys Origin (which is a straight-forward action hack and slash) or Ys 8 (which is a more grand scale RPG) because IMHO, those are by far the best entries in the series. Ys reinvented itself three or four times, and I don't like all versions of it either.
I prefer the party-based ones, with IX being by far my favorite. (I actually liked VII and Celceta more than VIII, which has one of the worst maps I've ever endured in a game.)
Once again, another member of the population thinking they’re doing something honorable but in reality they’re wasting their time playing a stupid game
Your SNES RPG series is so bingeable; I always love hearing your takes on these games.
Awesome work as always man!
Thanks a ton!
I'm keeping bump combat alive on the subway to work.

"Wake up, babe, new Jason Graves video just posted, let's goooo, I spit out my Celsius energy drink FRFR, nocap."
It really bugs me when an RPG has different mechanics for boss fights than regular battles.
Where is Tecmo Secret of the stars on this tier list???
It'S a weird one, but levelling all the side characters (kusteras) with the weird nuns, boxers and other lions ,
your party can be fun sometimnes, more than the Aquatalions
He hasn't reviewed that yet. Note how the list is also missing a bunch of heavy hitters like Romancing SaGa 3 and even Chrono Trigger
Haven't played it. Looking forward to it though, that game is going to be an event!
doesn'T YS V feel like a less clkunky Brain Lord??
Or a well made "LAgoon" ? A deeper "soulblazer" ?
I only played Wanderer From Ys III on SNES... completed it about 4 times. Love the music. Hate crouching to kill slimes for hours.,..
I like Brain Lord a lot more because of the dungeon design, and there's something about returning to one town the whole game which endears you to it. In this it's like everything happens so fast, you only spend 30-45 minutes in each area so none of them really have a chance to become memorable.
Dude, nice.
The game that started my love for the Ys series ❤
Also : have you ever thought of doing the hidden SNES rpg legend : Final Fantasy Legend III....
cuz it is a Super Game Boy game.... you can't play this to its value on Gameboy... this game is as deep as FF iv
with world changing events ,m and different planes of existence alsmost (SAGA 3, I know, but play this if you haven't !!! it's a 8/10!)
Y's V almost killed the series.
Just put the tier list section into the middle of the video?
*Clicks off the video as soon as you place the last game on the tier list*
same. What garbage this video is
No YSview, I YSfuse
10:00 "Converting webp to png. Something you'll be doing a lot of when making RUclips videos"
Sigh. I've just starting making videos. yes, yes it is.
Jason Braves another snes rpg
This game looks okay, but I'm not sure if I want to try it.
Jason, this is considered by most the worst game in the entire series, by far worse than any other game.
Ys IS a well know series. And Ys 5 is the worst one. Its why the series was dormant for 8 years after its release.
Have you played EVO?
It appears typing "Jason Graves EVO" is hard.
ruclips.net/video/YPEo2Jq1lGo/видео.html
Well, at least the game looks pretty (for the SNES).
Hey man, it's pronounced eess, not yees. Otherwise great video
It's been a long-running gag in this series, he'll keep switching the pronunciation of it over time. You missed when he was pronouncing it like the letter Y, haha
@@joshthefunkdoc Guess I missed that one. I've only seen a few episodes, mostly SNES stuff.
The tier list is fine if you only take a few seconds to say "this one belongs here" (which you do) and it caps off the video nicely.
Did... did you get a haircut!?
an illusion
Reminds me of Lagoon, same level of dinky
Secret of the stars is the most hilariously bad snes game ever.
9:49 did u just say it goes down ~*Ys-y*~??? Nice try pal!! 😏😂🤪
More metrics analytics!!
To think I was almost about to click off before you started explaining that the tier list made people stop watching. I'm horrible
Don't be. It does indeed prove why this channel is garbage
YS V wasn’t as good as its predecessors simply because it neglected bussy being a part of its story.
Never liked the Ys games.
@@menhirmikethe handheld Celceta one or whatever was genuinely really good.
I prefer the party-based ones, with IX being by far my favorite. (I actually liked VII and Celceta more than VIII, which has one of the worst maps I've ever endured in a game.)
If you ever have time. Totally worth playing 8 or 9.
You're missing out
Once again, another member of the population thinking they’re doing something honorable but in reality they’re wasting their time playing a stupid game
Couldn't dislike hard enough
I have Y’s 5 on the PS2 could be better but not too bad
