- Meet 32-year-old Sharron, a single Essex girl trying to live like a millionaire on a £22,000 receptionist. In just two years Shannon’s taste for the high life has racked up a debt of £26,000, well over her annual salary. But, it’s not just the champaign, as well as her teeth, there’s the tan. Then there’s the shopping. She’s addicted to buying shoes, and sometimes just one pair isn’t enough. Then there’s keeping up with the girls, having daily lunches with wine. Sharron’s family don’t know the full extent of her huge debt. Shannon’s got five credit cards, all maxed out, she’s heading for financial meltdown.

I understand what her sister is saying about not bailing her out but she shouldn't have encouraged her shopping habits. If you know that a friend/family member is hugely in debt don't go shopping or out to expensive dinners with them. Invite them to other activities that don't involve spending.
This is nice. Thanks for your advice.
I agree. All the people she knows are very well off so they look down on her habits despite having the same ones. They can't expect a person who's never been taught how to handle money to just know how to handle money when they've grown up around people who have the means to splurge. I just felt the bad for her the whole video with the general lack of understanding that came from the people around her with exception to her mother.
That's right if u no a person's in debt don't have them going shopping with u. Because that's incurred them to do so. Include them in to doing Free in pressed thing.
She didn’t encourage anything. Her sister is a grown woman.

Sophie Taylor yeah, look for some poor friends.

When me and my ex broke up I went crazy spending. I had an older work friend(10 years older) who was ready to party 🎉 lol. Long story short- I was spending $1000 a month on going out, staying up late and got behind on my bills. I couldn't afford my apt anymore so I moved back home. Her sister had bailed her out before. Just because others have money, it doesn't mean they are obligated to get a person or people out of the financial debt they put themselves in. If relief is made easy for them, they'll never learn. She needs to grow up and amend her mindset. yeah..there is definitely something more to the relationship with these two.
Tbh in the early 2000s, people in the UK didn't talk. To an extent its still the same way - you don't tell others about your problems because you don't want to worry people or it's all bit too emotional. It's getting better but my American friend who's living in the UK says British people still squirm when she talks about bad stuff, and as a Brit I totally get it. There's a culture here of not making a fuss about things.
That interaction she had with her mum was fairly standard for the UK tbh.
@@michellecd4722 lol do whatever ya want
If that’s how her mum reacted then this why she took long to tell her
If you really want something, wait two weeks and after that, if you still want it, get it. The result for me is that I hardly ever buy anything, we're more in love with the idea of things than the things themselves. After two weeks of choosing something you lose interest but still benefit from the intrigue and excitement of having something new.
Well said!
It kinda reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw lifestyle. It was normalized to live like that. I hope her future will be brighter now
So true
Lol, she's wearing the new skirt that she blew her budget for at 30:20. At least she actually wears her purchases!
This programme is from 2005, in today's money her wages would be around £37K and her debt from two years spending £44K, that's a lot of money. Shannon would now be around 50 years old. Would be interesting to see a follow up 18 years later to see if this intervention worked in the long term.
I used to spend a lot too, but never went into debt.
Then one day my older brother asked me “do you really need all that junk? What does it do for you?” And then I watched the story of stuff.
And just like that, I stopped buying stuff and started saving astronomical amounts of money. I’m happier knowing I have money in the bank incase something happens.
I don’t think everyone who spends has deep seeded emotional issues, but have rather just been had by the millions of advertisements we’re subjected to daily.
Can’t believe I’m actually watching a documentary because of a tik tok audio, I’d have to thank that one. I relate so much to her it’s scary, I hope I never become this bad or get into debt cuz I’m a college student having a lot of tuition to pay off 💀
I was $30k in debt 15 years ago. I am now in my late 30s, have zero debt, own everything, and now have tens of thousands of dollars saved.
She's really receptive to the help she's receiving and seems like a genuinely sweet person. If i could I'd want to be there for her too. I'm not even surprised she's so popular. Really hoping her friends have embraced the new her and accepted her for who she is regardless of spending habits.
It's really horrid how the milionaire sister will go shopping with her and then complain how she can't afford it and how she can't bail her out. -_-" Well if you invite a fried or sibling to a fun activity together... obviously you must both be doing it for it to be fun... she feels she has to keep up... What is she to do? Just sit there and look at what the sister buys? Very toxic environment...

I think it's a bit cringe how the psychologist tried multiple times to pin all her problems on the fact that her dad "left" her, even though she said that she wasn't upset about that and she has a great relationship with her dad and she saw him often. It's like he just decided that she's got daddy issues and is now trying to brainwash her into believing that.
I see your point but the fact that she started wetting her bed when her father left strongly indicates it was a traumatic event for her. Some people say they are fine with things they are not. Which can be worse because people only do that if the experience was too painful to cope so they just block it out entirely. It’s not unusual. I think it helped to discuss that event because clearly she’s doing a lot better now

Shannon is lovely. Her mother doesn’t seem upset. Not particularly loving. A 16yo girl doesn’t want to leave home if there are no problems. Very sad. I’m so glad she’s getting help. Her rich family should pay off the debt, consolidate with no interest and make her pay them it back in total , sign a contract to pay it off .

Fantastic comment! X
I got the feeling they re-enacted that for the show because it did not feel at all like she told her for the first time.
I completely agree. The mothers reaction was quite cold and dismissive. Shannon is lovely. I hope she’s doing well.
I thought her mother really came off as cold. I watched the body language and Shannon approached her for the hug but the mother stepped out of it first. There was also her lack of response to Shannon admitting that she has struggled with bulimia and this space between them. I don't know if it was reenacted for the show or not but I can't imagine if it was the first time that the mother was told such deep things that she could have such a distant response. I wish Shannon the best; she is really a lovely person.
@brisa2004 Just a thought....
● Since Shannon was such a daddy's girl.. it could be that when her mother & father's marriage broke down...her mother's...(subliminally)...directed some of her pain and resentment onto Shannon.
● Almost along the...(internal dialogue)...lines of "Why did Jim (eg) love u more than me?" 😠 Ur his daughter...but I'm his wife.
● Consciously...Shannon's mum knows their divorce wasn't Shannon's fault. But b/c her hubbie would most have likely critisised her all the time...but praised Shannon all the time...(b/c she was his Princess)...Shannon's mum is only human.
● So, some of that resentment manifests as coldness 2wards Shannon.
I love this show. It reveals the underlying issues that cause us to cope in extreme ways.
I love the way she talks, she speaks so beautifully:)
She's really such a lovely girl

45:39 Solid life advice, definitely the best nugget of knowledge I've seen from these clips so far.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I get what he’s saying about her walking away from a stable relationship, but not everyone wants marriage. There is a chance that she saw qualities in her longtime boyfriend, that made her see that he wasn’t marriage material. Not everything is a matter of “cold feet”, which is sloppy and lazy analysis. Sometimes people have a good way of leaving out clues as to why they shouldn’t get married. There’s probably more to that story than what was mentioned here. Although she lives in mountains of debt, she could lead a satisfying life once she is able to find her way out of her financial issues. Being married doesn’t necessarily mean your life is complete, there can be a litany of unwanted entanglements for both parties. Marriage doesn’t necessarily mean stability. If she wants to live the life of a single woman and be happy with it, she shouldn’t be forced to marriage just because of social constructs.
I agree, but she spoke about how much she wanted those things until she had them. Whether it was something internal to her or something about the partner that led her to end her relationship, I don’t believe she’s being forced to marriage. She expressed a desire for that.
@Glockiana17 running and fear...party girls are all about running away and fear of reality. It's a 13 year old girl pretending to be an adult.
judging from the flip phone and cars, this docu is about 20 years old. that means Shannon is now in her 50s. i wonder how she's doing today.
It's not just her. Most people in the world is catching up with the trend, trying to keep up with people they call friends. This is also the downside of Social Media. Living a fake life.
Not necessarily. The desire to keep up with the Joneses has always existed.

This is an eye opener to me, honestly.
I feel like they took me along for an hour's therapy too! Really really helpful. I can't believe rich people need for assistant's to buy a date, flowers and a gift...and next morning breakfast----thats so tacky and impersonal!! RICH PEOPLE (BANKER, FINACIER) PROBLEMS FROM CENTRAL LONDON. HA!
I agree! But it’s possible some of those people work crazy hours.
She feels the need to keep up with her rich family which is sad. They are family, they shouldn't make you feel like that way. She's a grown woman that got herself into debt and it's not up to them to pay things for her, (they already are helping her, her rent is only £200 to stay in that mansion). However they are not a very supportive bunch.
She wants to live a rich lifestyle while not being rich. Why should her family support her for her ridiculous fantasy? A lot of families are like this. Some members r rich, some r not so rich. Do you see them all trying to become rich like them and land in massive debts? Nah.
Exactly. They don’t have to support her but if I’m doing well selling cars and real estate you better believe I’m putting my sister on. If I’m in sales and going well I’m putting in my family so they can be on too. Her family is ridiculous. Her sister especially
I can't relate to this at all. I'm an old veteran. I've been used and never given anything. Now I'm quite happy living a simple life and looking after myself.
The lady going through the expenditure on paper is a very good idea. Showing the numbers on paper makes it more real. I hope Shannon is okay now or at least in a better place.
Bless her poor soul. Pretending she is fine to the outside world instead of opening up in a private non camera therapy session. It would be hard to be vulnerable on international TV.
£100 a month on clothes in the new budget? Surely she has enough clothes to do her and reduce the payback time on the loan by 50%
She could even sell some of the clothing and use the money to pay down her cards.
She has an addiction, if they cut her off cold turkey and gave her nothing to play around with she could go back to her old ways quicker so I think that was sensible

@@kellyotoole5957 She's English. Pretty reserved compared to us N. Americans.
What a pathetic cowardly reaction from the mother! That's your child!
She was giving her space to talk. If I was opening up about something important, I would want my personal space. The mother looked supportive, probably it is cultural differences
Such a lovely person ❤️
The majority of people I know are more or less like her. We all growing up surrounded by trends and idea of fancy lifestyle we've seen on Hollywood movies. Many people want to live a higher life standard than they can actually afford. It's social pressure, not even a jealousy of better situated family members, friends or neighbours, but internal fear you'll be socially excluded if you won't keep up with them.
This was such a rewarding journey to witness!
Those girls should come to US and buy all these shoes and closes at ROSS for 10 dollars each 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
If you don't have the money to spend for it... Then have a look give a try and don't buy or acquire. It may sound frustrating but thinking of being debt-free that's much better. You can look to those below and be thankful you have what you have and better perhaps than lots of people in the world. I'm glad she was very cooperative, probably her spending habits was due to some depressive events in her life. Kudos Shannon!
bless her, the thing i do not understand is why her sister who is a millionaire will not help her with her debt, i mean like the programme said she will happily go shopping because she can afford to splash out on the cash yet her sister is in debt and is trying to keep up with the lifestyle of the family
That would be enabling an addict. No consequences=keep on with the behaviour.
I was thinking the same thing. Why doesn’t her sister help her out with making extra money? If I was rich I would absolutely give away all my secrets to my family and friends.
Why would you be obligated to fix your loser sisters money problems, she did it to herself, she is a materialistic idiot.
Great video! It’s made me think!
I'm the extreme opposite! I'm not materialistic at all and I love saving money. I try to owe the least amount of stuff too cuz I'm also a bit of a minimalist.
Okay.
I've learned to be like this, after having the same sort of lifestyle, the going out drinking, eating lunch with friends, shopping, etc. Got in debt. Now I'm paying it all back, I don't spend anything unless I need to, going very minimalist, dont drink at all and never really go out,and feeling better for it 💪👌
Yes but you’re probably not dealing with what she’s dealing with. Shopping addiction is a real problem and it seems she suffered some trauma or mental health related problems in the past. Her behaviour is abnormal so it means she had to get treated. I think it’s good to have some compassion.
@@AndreyaWryght minimalism and keeping a budget definitely helps. In fact you end up seeing you can actually buy better things and have a better quality life. Less becomes more and you save money too.
I like having a lot of stuff but I also make sure I can afford it
Dear @onlyhuman the word "champaign" in the video description is actually spelled Champagne. x
Awww, Shannon actually seems like a nice person. She’s one of the few people in severe debt whom I’ve seen on these shows that I actually feel kinda bad for. She’s not your typical selfish little Paris Hilton shopaholic, she actually cares about others & tries to just keep up with everyone around her. She seems to lack confidence and have a poor self-esteem about herself. She’s constantly comparing herself to those around her and never feels as good as them no matter what. I know it is to feel like the odd one out like this and just try to fit in with people. I used to feel insecure like this growing up and like I was always “keeping up with the Joneses.” Still feel that way from time to time even now. But I’ve learned that it’s important to be proud of who you are, be mindful of what you can or cannot afford, and not focus so much on what others are doing with their lives. Plus, the truth others around you most likely are struggling a lot more than you may think even if they make it seem like their life is perfect compacted to yours.
Compared to yours.
For someone that spends a lot of money on clothes and shoes, the outfit she was wearing does not look fancy or expensive at all.
Love the soundtracks to this series! Basement Jaxx, Mylo, Daftpunk.. yesss!
It's heartbreaking 💔 I hope she's doing well, trauma can sneak up on you even when your a kind caring person.
$10 000 on teeth is a good investment. i would if i could.
Toothpaste and toothbrush is a better investment
@@framclean7910 I'd argue floss belongs on that list as well.
She had bulimia for 15 years. Her teeth were probably in horrible condition. I had bulimia for many years myself and I spent a lot to fix them up. That was probably the best thing she spent money on.
The crazy thing is now 268 a week doesn’t seem too bad with inflation… but the problem is income hasn’t changed with it.
Them playing Gwen Stefani over this is amazing
