I think people buying both just buy it for collecting purposes. No reason to buy both just for the difference in some games since when it comes to games you can easily emulate roms on your PC just as good or better. Is not that you can't play the games you can't have on the mini. The whole thing is a novelty buy.

Madlittlepixel, Great final thoughts! I just got one (international version) and the gamepads and love it! I originally tried to hook it up to my 1080p TV and I was also disappointed at the lack of clarity. However, I just built a mini Arcade cabinet that has 720p TV installed, and thought I'd try it on that since the mini is supposed to output natively at 720p. Low and behold, the image looks much sharper on my 720p set! Now I know most people probably have a 4K TV. I'm sure it looks even more a mess at that upscaled resolution, but 720p was the trick for me! Just thought I'd pass that along. Have a great day! Don
You know I ran into the same thing when I put this on my older tv that outputs at 720p as well. I though I was taking crazy pills and it was just me. I think they soften the 1080p Upscale to make it not look as pixalated on 4k tvs.
So i ordered one off amazon and it was the American version, the box has an america flag across the lower corner of the box. The console is the japanese model but with the international games. Im very happy about that because i think the jdm one is was slicker looking.

Also I wonder if someone will make new micro switch controllers for these? Also if someone could mod the video output would be great! Great channel you have a new subscriber!
Personally, I think the International version has a better variety of games but if you like fighters then the Japanese version is the must have. I'm a sucker for these and getting both versions. =)
Nice side by side comparison MLP. I passed on these due to cost, because I feel like for $109.99 a controller should've been included. I could get past the HDMI cable, but I know it's too small for me not to play it on the television. I still like it overall, but just not enough to buy. Thanks
Why doesn’t anyone ever go into the censorship details between these two systems? That’s a super important detail for me.. I had to wait until the 8:58 mark in this video and watch the samurai shodown footage on both and hear him say “I can deal with the green blood” to finally confirm my question..

I got the HDMI to mini and the console and white and black gamepads for 89.99 off of Wal-Mart last year around May. But here's the kicker. It's the Japanese version aesthetically. The red white and blue with the colored buttons. Same marquee sticker of KOF '97 power light and all. But it's the International version as far as the software goes
Madlittlepixel, would you PLEASE do a tutorial video on how to add more Neo Geo ROMs to the International version of the Neo Geo Mini? I think there is a video on how to do this on RUclips but it is in a foreign language and I was hoping you'd make a video most anyone can understand, like you always do?! Thanks!
The International one looks like a Neo Geo Mini 2, over the Asian one. Nice lines on the control panel instead of flat and the light ring around the stick is way cooler than the standard light in the corner of the unit.
I know this is an old video but there was a time where you could do blood codes, switching from japan to us on samurai showdown 2 will put red blood on the screen. Can't remember if you can do the same on metal slug.
I love that they decided to make an arcade cabinet and not a mini AES system. I remember this company because of the arcade cabinets i used to play in professional joysticks out of school. None arround me could afford an AES system so i have no memories playing any. Only SNK had the chance really to honour their mini system by making an arcade cabinet with screen and joystick as a control. i am so glad they did that instead of releasing a mini AES.
USD=Reserve currency of the world since the end of WWII, and the US is the 'LARGEST' market in terms of units sales for video games+systems globally, meaning game companies compete more against each other in the crowded+high demand market place, easily making up such a perceived price shortfall in the process (I.E. Sell more units to justify a lower price point). Also, in Europe VAT taxes on imported goods like this automatically add to the costs, whereas the US just seemingly never tariffs any 'incoming' goods from other countries, all at the cost of their own productivity+growth in their own marketplace.... ....So, to summarize, the TLDR version, Corporate F*ckery and differing governmental tax laws! lol. Doesn't the JP use a different format for their video? That might be why it looks so different over here. I believe they use PAL for most of their video formatting. We use NTSC.
Did they update it since 2008? Mine is not blurry on the TV, it's got an enhanced mode that looks nice. If that mode is switched off, then yes it looks blurry
I have the Asian version. There is an english option but there are japanese only language in a game or two despite having that option. Uncensored blood is a plus too.
Is there any color light up on the joystick surrounding for Asia version? I see there are blue color light up on the joystick surrounding for international version.
I actually have the international and the Samurai Showdown versions of these. So, I get blood in the Samurai Showdown version. You get two controllers and hdmi cable with the Samurai Showdown verison.
Currently have the Samurai Shodown version and I'm thinking of picking up either the Game Monkey "USA" version or the International version for the games list. Are the roms on the International version all in English? Also wondering if you think the 17 games that you get from the International version vs Samurai Shodown are worth it.
@@krathoon2338 Thanks! I went ahead and ordered the international because they’re pretty cheap these days and I already have the controllers, cable, etc. Looks like more action games on International than the other releases.
Awesome video. Very informative. I have both versions too and I just got my US version today. I immediately noticed the difference in screen quality and found this video to verify it. I like the US version more cos of the omission of blood.
Are you sure your brightness is the same on both minis because I have both and I don't see a difference in the brightness. also the different screen protectors might do it as well since anti-glare can darken it.
My opinion is SNK missed the boat with the their Mini. The decision stems from the fact that their console is not much to look at and their controllers would be too damn expensive. So instead of making it right there doing something completely different again. Also why would I want to play neo Geo on a tiny screen. It had the biggest Sprite size of its generation.
Yeah pretty much. Short comparison at the end of the video showing hdmi capture from both devices playing Metal Slug 2. Its not great looming to me but may not bother others.
@Madlittlepixel, this whole notion about it not being 'great' in TV mode is very odd to me? As objectively, the 'alternatives' to play such games (aside from the redundant 'Raspberry Pi' comments) are FAR MORE EXPENSIVE! I mean, you'd think that 720p 'HD' in an offered 4:3 format for retro styled 2-D games would be pretty good for the games on VARIOUS 'HD' televisions, but some people still think it's not good enough for the price point. By comparison, I don't think it's too bad, as an original 'AES' system goes on E-bay for around $250-$600, and that's just for the system with NO GAMES, the Switch is of course a GREAT option and has a nice screen+Controller+TV output options, but again, this option comes in at $299 for just the system and then $7.99 per ACA SNK title, Albeit there are A LOT of OTHER great games on the system to warrant it's purchase, but I have some of the ACA Neo Geo hamster ports on the Switch, and output them to the TV regularly, and there's literally no perceivable difference in the output+sound quality in ANY YT video review I've seen of the mini by comparison, 'International' version gameplay of course, IDK WTF is going on with the Japanese version, lol. (I.E. they seem to be of the same output quality, visually, as the international 'mini' is the same as the ACA 'HD' ports on the Nintendo E-shop in terms of graphical fidelity, the only real difference seems to be in the 'insert coin' functions and perceivable 'censorship' AES format of the ROM titles on the different systems by comparison). As such, given the ridiculous price point of buying 40 ACA titles off the E-shop (I.E. $316.40 USD) thanks to your excellent review videos, I recently purchased an 'International' mini version to enjoy a PLETHORA of great SNK titles in a 'mini console' format with additional SNK controllers, and after seeing this video, I'm glad I picked the 'International version', as I really don't understand WHY the 'Japanese' version is so dark+contrast heavy by comparison? Even on the TV output? like WTH? lol. This aspect about the 'mini' systems in your video was very insightful, but still makes ZERO sense to me as to WHY?!? You'd think they'd be outputting the same ROMs for emulation, no? lol. Anyways, Thanks for the quality comparison+previous videos in this series, and I'm glad you pointed out the price point to 'quality' perception of the separate SNK controllers as well, as it seems a lot of die-hard SNK fans are upset about the 'micro-switches' being absent, yet the controllers are only $26. Also, you could mention to 'detractors' that SNK is also releasing a 40th anniversary collection on the Switch as well, for those that don't like the 'mini console' format that is being offered.
@Louie G, ah thanks for the clarification on this, I was just thinking that since it was their 40th anniversary collection, and that they haven't announced all the titles for it yet, that there'd maybe be some Neo Geo titles on offer for it as well.
i seriously wanna concoct a diy handheld with one of thes by gutting them and fitting it in a custom case or if that isnt viable then put it in the neo geo x docking station for a sort of neo geo aes mini style system.
My only complaint for the controller is that the thumb part has no grip. I notice the original seem to have some kind of plastic grip on it. I look on Amazon for thumb pad for it but no good. Is there something I can do to add some grip to it.
Maybe the asian version has an IPS screen (more color saturation and better contrast) and the american is built with an NT screen (more whiteness, less deep dark tones and colors). Great video as always.
Interesting thought...but it doesn't explain why the perceived 'contrast' and 'darker' visuals VS the 'More Whiteness' and 'Less Dark Tones' then translate over to the TV from the different versions as well...it's almost like they have 2 different ROM sets+output methods between the two versions as well, which of course would make ZERO sense!!!...but this is JAPAN we're talking about....and it is a product coming from China, so really anything is 'plausible' at this point, lol.
@@sinistergrey3Yeah! I agree. On the other side about the colors and stuff, if the signal is different even playing in TV that means that the screen type has little to do with it. I love these retro consoles anyway :)
I kind of wish they added some rubber to the top of the controllers analog stick like the PS4 or Xbox One controllers (even though the original didn't have it). I found myself just pushing on the edges of the stick due to lack of grip while playing more intense games. Overall, I think it's cool but, I share all your concerns like the blood, TV resolution, and no battery. It just could have been better.
Does the glare-reducing screen protector have anything to do with it?? I had a glare reducer on an old crt back in the day and it made the screen darker..
Nope it was the same prior to putting the protectors on. (Just put them on last night, and you can see the output difference via playing through HDMI as well) I linked it in the description. But I think I was wrong its not a anti glare protector possibly. But i still prefer it over the glass.
Can you help me with finding a cable that I could use to extend the Neo Geo Mini controllers like 15 feet? I'm trying to find a way to play from my couch at a distance from the TV. Thanks!
I’m loving my mini also. The game plays so smooth unlike the roms u downloaded off a website, I want more games on it,but afraid the quality of games would be bad. The games one raspberry and pandora box are just awful.
I seriously get it though, but for me it didn't bother me as much as I thought it was going to. Sure I have original Neo Geo cd pads and an AES and have played it quite a bit. But the analogue on this controller feels good to me and I dont feel like I can't perform moves in games like Samurai Shodown. Its fine, though sure it would have been nice if it had the micro switches.
Not so surprising since the International version is probably a later revision of the product. I wonder if later Japanese units look like that as well.
No blood after 25 years of samurai shodown 2, that's the only deal breaket i need; i already have them on ps2(AOF, FATAL FURY, METAL SLUG, KOF, etc)and that was a let down
You like Fighting games a lot. Get the Japanese version. You like metal slug games get the international version. I got used the controllers pretty fast. Though not ideal its not bad. Another thing I noticed on smaller older TVS that do 720p like my vizo in the office the games look like the should. On big tvs where they are putting out 1080p they have that softness. I think they filter it on 4k tvs so it does not look over pixelated. I think its on purpose they did that.

Also, you could mention to 'detractors' that SNK is also releasing a 40th anniversary collection on the Switch as well, for those that don't like the 'mini console' format that is being offered.
@@sinistergrey3 SNK 40th Collection on Switch doesn't have any 'Neo-Geo' titles. It's a collection of older SNK games.
@Louie G, ah thanks for the clarification on this, I was just thinking that since it was their 40th anniversary collection, and that they haven't announced all the titles for it yet, that there'd maybe be some Neo Geo titles on offer for it as well.
think the color difference maybe down to the color system in both countries
I was going to get one but the controllers and bad TV output made me get a neo geo colour pocket instead.
Hey man love your channel. I just got mine in and its red, white and blue but its an American version. So how many different versions are there?
They look nice
You're my #1 MLP! Great vid
Can you use UK and Japan one with same HDMI cable or not thanks just order one
i seriously wanna concoct a diy handheld with one of thes by gutting them and fitting it in a custom case or if that isnt viable then put it in the neo geo x docking station for a sort of neo geo aes mini style system.
Is there a possibility to change regions or switch to arcade-mode (service menu)..? Maybe a keyboard shortcut??
My only complaint for the controller is that the thumb part has no grip. I notice the original seem to have some kind of plastic grip on it. I look on Amazon for thumb pad for it but no good. Is there something I can do to add some grip to it.
Sandpaper
can you connect 2 of them to play 2 player so everyone has their own screen
Only just hit Australian shores yay mini collection complete till the Sega mini releases ...
Any external fight sticks work with this? Do Japanese pads work with International console?
Hey. Where did you get the stickers on the marquee? Mine doesn't seem to have come with one...
The stickers should be in the white box that had the power cable.
Got my international ver with mini HDMI a white and black controller for £89.99 I’m happy with it just wish the stick clicked
Looks like it would be a pain trying to play these games with the sticks on the device
The lack of a battery is a real bummer. But you can easily make your device mobile by using a power bank.
I sure hope they get the AES MINI right.
What about the blood code on the US for samurai showdown 2
Does the glare-reducing screen protector have anything to do with it?? I had a glare reducer on an old crt back in the day and it made the screen darker..
Nope it was the same prior to putting the protectors on. (Just put them on last night, and you can see the output difference via playing through HDMI as well) I linked it in the description. But I think I was wrong its not a anti glare protector possibly. But i still prefer it over the glass.
Im waiting on my pre order to come in! Game Stop is saying the 24th now. 😢
Blood or no blood I love neogeo games
Can you help me with finding a cable that I could use to extend the Neo Geo Mini controllers like 15 feet? I'm trying to find a way to play from my couch at a distance from the TV. Thanks!
Bro how can i order this in pakistan
This console is so hated that it will become rare in the future. I just bought mine for 70€ new from amazon. REALLY ZERO REGRETS. ITS A BEAUTY.
One's too Dark, One's too Light, if we had a Middle then, that One is Just Right.
To me no micro switches coupled with the low quality picture over HDMI is a deal breaker. Better luck next time SNK. It was an ambitious idea though.
Hack the SNES classic mini and emulate it the heck out of it.
Can you hook the controllers up to a PC??
How is the input lag?
These screens make me think of PSVita oled vs lcd for some reason, left one looks amazing
I ordered mine yestarday
I got a nice deal on the international version 65.99.
Got 2 for $40 each shipped on eBay yesterday.
I’m loving my mini also. The game plays so smooth unlike the roms u downloaded off a website, I want more games on it,but afraid the quality of games would be bad. The games one raspberry and pandora box are just awful.
Metal Jesus threw this great console under the bus because the controller didn't have micro switches😂😂😂
He's an idiot.
No blood sucks but i just picked this thing up from amazon for $60 !:)
Not so surprising since the International version is probably a later revision of the product. I wonder if later Japanese units look like that as well.
yeah that would be interesting to see. This Japanese unit was from launch... so maybe something changed in the later production runs from September.
New subscriber love the content, the auto focus on your camera is kinda annoying at times
No blood after 25 years of samurai shodown 2, that's the only deal breaket i need; i already have them on ps2(AOF, FATAL FURY, METAL SLUG, KOF, etc)and that was a let down
I think there is a way to unlock the blood and fatal finishers by changing the language.
International for me. I bought 5 of them. :-D
5?? LOL
Can i use controllers in PC? Someone has tried?
I'm gonna buy it....limited Samurai Showdown Ukyo Tachibana neo geo mini edition with all the 6 samurai showdown games
I'm sold.
A cell phone battery was too much to ask for.
