I velcrow a power bank battery on the back of this thing and now it's completely cord free. The quality and control of this thing is top notch. New Egg is now selling it for $60..worth every penny!!
John Smitherson questing for you. On the switch NEO GEO games seem to be set up with limitless credits so you can keep playing after you die. Does the mini have this function or is it limited to how many “continues you can hit”?
I got this at launch with two gamepads (one black and one white) and the branded HDMI cable (because I didn't have a mini HDMI to normal HDMI cable). My three main gripes are: 1) the very noticeable dip in video quality when played on a TV via HDMI (turning on the "image optimization" option on improves the blurry picture but the smoothing effect degrades the quality of the backgrounds and the pixels themselves); 2) the games are censored; and 3) you can't delete save-states and need to factory-reset the machine in order to clear out save-states that you don't want. I don't regret getting it but I expected a lot better quality for the price I paid for everything. P.S. I also agree that Metal Slug X is the best in the series. I purposely chose the international version over the Japanese version because I wanted all the Metal Slug games.
Hey retrorob I finally broke down and ordered the neo geo mini international today with 2 controllers and HDMI cable for a 100 bucks on Amazon! Can't wait!
Been looking forward to this video. Glad to see a mostly positive take on the device. If I hadn’t pissed away my money on the Neo Geo X a few years back, I totally would have grabbed a mini.
I'm kind of surprised the reviews were not more positive in general. It's a fun little system even if it's not perfect. I think a lot of the folks who covered this have not played any of the other mini arcades. This is so heads above even the best of those I have covered.
Just saw your review today- totally with you on this *STILL* being one of the best mini-arcade cabs hands down. We did a video review on the Japanese version last week.
So first thing, it's awesome. Gripes about some stuff (controlls). But common. I spent more than this on single games at the arcade back then. The cost of the home system was well out of reach. This thing is great. I know everything could be better, but it's fun. The mini arcade setup is great. Invites gameplay from people who have never seen any of these games before. USB battery packs are cheap and allow portable use.
I have the Japanese version. It adds up when you want to hook up to a TV. You need a power brick, mini HDMI cable, and a controller which run for about $26 each. If you get it all, you could be in the $175.00 range with the system. You may want to wait.. There have been a few posts about a Christmas limited edition version coming out soon. It is red, comes with 2 red controller's, and a blend of USA and Japan version games + about 9 more games which would include League bowling. I agree, Where is Baseball Stars ?? Also, there was a shooter called Pulstar that was supposed to be beautiful on the Neo Geo. I never seen it but in EGM back in the day. I hear it's rare and expensive too. Great work Rob!
Thanks! I'm pretty sure I used to have Pulstar on my old MVS multi-cart. Viewpoint is another game that is missing but there was a great Playstation version of that game around.
Great review. Ive kind of wanted one for a while but was turned off by other reviewers. I’m only recently discovering NEO GEO and have really enjoyed their games on the switch.
Thank you for your review ! I’m really into this. I didn’t have any NeoGeo home console before; neither I’m familar with their (original) buttons layout. I read some reviewers complain about the current button layouts as opposed to its original, lack of USB power adapter, unoptimized TV HDTV output (720p). I get it. But, hey, I’ll buy one eventually.
Man other videos made me say no way you have convinced me to pick the one I have on hold at GS tomorrow. I do agree they should have had BB Stars & League Bowling amongst others. I really would have preferred more variety and less metal slugs & KOF. I have owned the Gold System and the CD system looking forward to this little system after your vid. New Sub thumbs up!

Quite frankly, I like the unit more than I expected! And I ended up getting the white controller as well, I'm having a blast lol, the screen looks vibrant, the emulation its efficient, and I can be streaming other things in my TV while playing. I agree with you, the final decision should be more subjective and not to get carried away from all the reviewers out there.its always better to At least give a try, and then build a personal opinion from there. I tried the Japanese version (I wasn't thrilled neither than I was repealed), and the things that stopped me from buying it is, a lot of fantastic SNK games are on the switch, which is portable and have a "battery". And my favorite snk game (windjammers) is not here. So for me, it is just a "meeh", but this is not a bad product! Eddit: what I am trying to say is SNK is for me 2 things: excellent games (arcade oriented) and exceptional controllers for a home device at this time. Here you do not have exceptional controllers, they are just good, and you do not have my favorite games. That is why I class it as a "meh". Plus no built-in battery, that feature would have been AWESOME!
You might be missing the point a little on people's issue with the big screen output. The issue is the poor scaling for modern 1080p and 4K flatscreens. People are not comparing it to an MVS connected directly to an LCD. They are comparing it to an MVS hooked up to an LCD through a scaler like the Framemeister or OSSC. The SNES mini, for example, apparently does a nice job with scaling so output looks good on a flatscreen without filters.
I agree somewhat on the SNES and NES classic, but I don't think it is a fair to compare the output from original consoles using scaling devices: most of those are more expensive than this device not even including a game system. It also looks much better than any of the mini arcades I have tested by a pretty good clip. I do totally agree it could be better, I just think given the price and features it's really a pretty decent device overall. BTW, Great comment!
The American NeoGeo AES games were censored so that's why the blood isn't red. I think thats the way they were when they came out with the American Neo Geo AES machine in the 90s.

It's cute, but I don't think I'd pay full price for it. For $100 it should've come with the power adapter, an HDMI cable (they're cheap enough), and possibly one of the controllers. The arcade panel is nice, but I can't see that being comfortable if you're planning to play it for an extended period.
Indeed. I will say they definitely picked a good selection of games for the system. Even with multiple instances where they selected multiple games from the same series, they still managed to get an excellent, diverse selection of games that highlighted some of their most iconic franchises. Having 40 slots to work with definitely helped, but I feel like they really put some thought into what they should include.

MJR was completely overreacting over no micro switches which poisoned his entire opinion. Imo it's better than Nintendo's switch or 3DS. Yes its a lofty claim, however when Nintendo doesn't do paid online and the 3DS had not only better online support, but also a better eshop layout, Nintendo done screwed up royally.
Lack of a battery annihilating the portability form factor Lack of a power adapter (not a huge deal but still) Absence of Control settings (also lack of a turbo option, ideal for run n' gun or shoot 'em up games) No option to change from AES to MVS versions of the games nor the option to switch to Japanese versions (like that white blood on Metal Slug) Poor display options, and extremely bad quality on TV via the HDMI Lack of clicky sticks (also the dead-zone is gigantic with both the integrated stick and the controller's stick) making the controls extremely frustrating for both fighting and platforming games Overall I strongly disagree with your verdict recommending this thing, thumbs down on the Neo Geo Mini unless they reverse some of this nonsense, 30 bucks tops for this device at its current state
Great comments! Nothing wrong with disagreeing. I'm a bit concerned that you may not have watched all of the video as I cover many of the things you mention. That said I think before you say it is worth $30 you may want to look at what $30 consoles are actually like (I have covered a lot of them). Personally I think $50 would be pretty OK in the current market.
The companies releasing these devices sure are cheap. No power supply? Really? They are asking good money and they don't include a cheap power supply. And everyone is doing it. The PlayStation classic, She's classic, etc.
AC adapter, most people have loads and rechargeable batteries will die in 3 years or so. I want my unit to last forever so it's better not to have one .

Yes its a lofty claim, however when Nintendo doesn't do paid online and the 3DS had not only better online support, but also a better eshop layout, Nintendo done screwed up royally.
Rip of that stick and put it in a 7" portable retro.
Lack of a battery annihilating the portability form factor
Lack of a power adapter (not a huge deal but still)
Absence of Control settings (also lack of a turbo option, ideal for run n' gun or shoot 'em up games)
No option to change from AES to MVS versions of the games nor the option to switch to Japanese versions (like that white blood on Metal Slug)
Poor display options, and extremely bad quality on TV via the HDMI
Lack of clicky sticks (also the dead-zone is gigantic with both the integrated stick and the controller's stick) making the controls extremely frustrating for both fighting and platforming games
Overall I strongly disagree with your verdict recommending this thing, thumbs down on the Neo Geo Mini unless they reverse some of this nonsense, 30 bucks tops for this device at its current state
Great comments!
