Brad DL I don't think that's only the second opus. Got the third one on Switch and it's really laggy as soon as there are explosions...I mean, maybe not "really laggy" but you can definitely feel the game slowing down.
*IcKY* Only the arcade games had slowdowns due to too much sprites and animations on screen, the GBA and NeoGeo Pocket Color versions doesn't have slowdowns at all due to those limitations even though they were censored.

For me, I think I'll get both, I like the premise of this little retro 'cabinet' and it will be fun to play against some friends with the SNK controllers.
You will wait a long time, snk seems to relase one game every 6 months so the switch will die and nintendo will release a new console and all 40 titles wont make it to the switch and all the games get re released again on the new gen cycle lol
I can't work out why they went for the mini arcade with screen. It's too small for any adult to play without the extra controllers. They should have just made a cheaper mini AES (like a snes mini) and allowed the use if original neo geo controllers (the original sticks) as those neo neo CD pads are shite. This is just a collectors trinket to put in a shelf, and at the asking price, no chance
I think the same, why put a small LCD screen? Just to make it look like an arcade cabinet? They should have used the Neogeo home console for the look like Nintendo, Sega and Sony did.
Pre ordered mine with the white controller. I cant wait to have this on my shelf! I just happened to find a copy of the snk collection volume 1 for ps2, and I've been debating whether or not to pick the international version along with one controller (probably white) it looks pretty neat though
The emulator was literally grabbed from the Internet, it was made by a homebrew dev who took portions of MAME and FBA sourcecode and combined them into one. This was back when MAME was licensed as noncommercial. It is quite possible it was a license break to license this then as GPL, and for SNK and the Chinese no-name contractor they probably hired to take this tojust take that and then sell this overpriced trinklet comes off as extremely scummy and corporate welfare-ish. I really feel you RUclipsrs have to significantly step up your game and become a lot more critical on these ventures, these companies are literally doing no inhouse production at all and are just taking open source emulators and then putting $100+ pricetags on what is essentially cheap SoC hardware. Worse is that the authors themselves behind these emulators either don't get compensated for them at all, or that the licenses of the emulators are being paid lip service. In any case, it really reveals that there is no shame anymore in this games industry in terms of how they go about and take stuff that isn't theirs and then proceed to sell it so carelessly. If you want to find out the sourcecode repo that the no-name contractor just dumped on Github, here it is - github.com/xugamezhouyuhua/neogeominiemu Again, I reiterate - this was made for PSP homebrew way back in the day, SNK did not lift a finger on any of this work, and it is very likely it was not even legal for him to license this as GPL given the non-commercial licenses of the MAME versions the code was based on, never mind for SNK and its Chinese affiliates to just sell it like this. They did this one time before with Neo Geo X Gold or whatever it was called when they were straight up taking emulators like FBA and throwing it on hardware even though that emulator has a non-commercial license attached to it. I guess to this 'industry', the only things that should be respected are their licenses and their 'IP', and that of budding homebrew authors can just be paid lip service. Why are you guys so excited at these companies just re-selling you homebrew emulators like this? This is literally cash grab-ism, nothing more.
Frankly if SNK (or its modern incarnation) want to do so after so many people have played these games for free for decades now, who can begrudge them that? If SNK can still make money off these games today somehow, off the licenses or doing these kind of deals then that's great (and I'm all for emulation so I'm not saying this in a "pro Nintendo" kind of way regarding the recent emulation argument!). If it was just a Chinese company doing this without SNK being involved in any way though, well that is different.
To be fair, this is a fork of a five-year-old version NJEMU, which is GPL licensed; if there was a license break, it happened years before this was developed, and these developers are compliant with the GPL. That being said, why do you think NJEMU uses MAME/FBA code? It definitely uses MAME roms, but that doesn't mean the code is based on the MAME NeoGeo driver. Also, while MAME as a whole was licensed as noncommercial, before the license normalization in 2016, each driver was under a different license, most commonly 3-clause BSD.
freekboy658 If you look at the code, you can find several files that are named identically to older MAME versions of equivalent code. It is quite obviously rewritten MAME code. In some cases I'd argue not much is even rewritten - maybe copyright text taken out and some function names renamed. Anyway, I highly suspect the original coder had no idea that years after the fact, SNK would take his code and start to sell it, so likely the GPL relicensing did not really matter at the time since all of it was kinda underground since it was meant for homebrew PSPs. Still, shame on SNK and the Chinese no-name contractor that cobble this together for them for not doing due diligence. This will be the second time now they have taken emulator sources that are not exactly legal for them to sell (the first time being Final Burn Alpha on the Neo Geo Gold X). Unfortunately, since I don't see the original author pursuing this, they will likely get away with it, and they don't really care anyway as long as they get their money. Typical now for this industry unfortunately. I wish it were different, but am not surprised.
andy7666 They are almost certain to have outsourced this to some random Chinese/Taiwanese/Hong Kong contractor, who probably cobbled this together. 0% chance of this having been developed inhouse. These contractors don't care and literally go for the lowest-hanging fruit - download anything from the Internet that gets the job done regardless of license complications or authors, throw it together with roms you downloaded from the Internet, give it back to the client, say 'job done', collect your money, move on to the next project.
What do you mean, why are they excited? They got the product free, and these kinds of things are essentially promotional or marketing stuff. This isn't a review, its an unboxing and impressions video, he is under no obligation to be that critical.of the product. He probably doesn't even know of its history either.
Metal Slug 2 always had slowdown, some re-releases fixed it, but the original version had slowdown whenever a lot of action was present. Try 2 player mode, basically slow motion the whole time.
The slowdown on metal slug 2 is also present on the arcade version. That's the reason why metal slug x was made, to fix alot of the slowdown issues. So its arcade perfect
That thing is awesome, I was waiting for it's 'release date' to be announced since you first talked about it lol. I think it will go well alongside the 40th anniversary collection that's coming out on switch, and it'll be cool to play against friends with the SNK controllers in a 'mini' system format like this as well. PLETHORA of SNK games, can't go wrong.
I velcrow a power bank battery on the back of this thing and now it's completely cord free. The quality and control of this thing is top notch. New Egg is now selling it for $60..worth every penny!!
I like this a lot. The only but major gripe I have is the limited game selection. The MVS era alone was over 120+ games and I'm only getting 40. I wish they incorporated a way to add games, or allowed for some type of storage media that could be sold later on (I suspect licensing is why all these classic consoles are locked), so that would be a great way to pay for the additional licenses over time and not upfront.
If SNK should have dumped the screen and made it into a regular box to connect it to your tv, get it to 100€ in the process, I would have buoyed it in an instant. But to pay 50 extra for that gimmick, as neat as it may be, isn’t worth it imho.
If you actually want to play Neo Geo games properly, there is no better option than just getting a $100 PC, an older AMD card, and a used Sony 27" CRT with component inputs and running the games in GroovyMAME. Perfect emulation at the original resolution and refresh rate. Every commercial option is a joke compared to a setup like that.
Looks like they used native (320x224) resolution, just scaled to 720p so it basically looks like the emulators. At least they didn't mess with the original resolution. I prefer it look at least a little blocky for retro sake. :)
I hate the Switch ACA versions, the Switch joysticks are just too loose and there's no control + there's serious input lag, I know this is just MAME emulation but the unit's stick is very responsive and I love using the controls on it... Yeah, I'm a masochist lol
I believe the two stickers are to decorate the mini arcade cab. Is it true you can’t use just the cab controls when you attach the unit to the tv and have to buy the control pad to play?
Picked this up today and LOVE it. One thing though, I've been reading and hearing about no blood, but I'm seeing blood. At least in Sam Sho V and Kizuna Encounter so far
I'm gonna cancel my pre order I played it at midwest retro and was unimpressed. Now after seeing this video and the other I have watched I dont want it anymore.... looks like a shotty system. And the prototype I played felt like a cheap imitation. Love the channel tho
Switch does NeoGeo better portably. At home I use my joystick. Now if only they would let these games go online Multiplayer on all systems + crossplay.
Yeah, this feels like a total cash grab. There are no microswitches in any of the controllers, the built in controls are too small for extended play, and they didn't even bother to get the color right on the international version of this. I'd buy an neo geo x over this any day if they weren't so expensive.
@@florriblerobot Well they're just rom dumps here and you can get the games individually on a lot of hardware these days. You're still better off buying the cds or cartridges as a collector for authenticity. Or just own this just to own it I guess.
As one of the people who got a neo geo x, ive been curious how this mini arcade will do. Hopefully better than the neo geo x. I am curious if you can add roms to this or not.
Now I just want someone to produce a kit that you can convert the innards of this Neo Geo Mini into a hand held unit without the knob, but with a Dpad.
I think its cool and all but I can't justify it when I have a Switch. That's my NeoGeo Mini. Will these be around a while? I want to buy an SNES mini then I'll buy this. I already have nearly all these games + more on switch /: NeoGeo was a dream as a kid. I loved the games! They're known for the fighters but I think the system has some of the best shooters, beatem ups, and sports games found anywhere. They just need to add online Multiplayer on all systems and crossplay if they can. Windjammers original and the new Windjammers 2 on switch has me super excited. PS4 and PC players lucky they already got windjammers I always always played that, baseball stars 2 and metal slug at the arcade and pizza place
I love your channel so much Jon. I love the essentially daily content. without you I really would be lost. Hope to donate and support differently better.
The slowdown is just the way that game plays and I *think* there may be stickers for the buttons (the game stickers you mentioned are for attaching to the "cabinet")?
Why didn’t they use the MVS versions, with options to turn on red blood, instead of white and green censored? Is there any chance turning the language to Japanese will change the region? Making it uncensored?
So a stranger sends _you specifically_ a leak about this a few months back and it makes rounds around the internet, then the company sends you a review one and seems not to be upset that you leaked their stuff.... I dunno, it sounds less like it got leaked and more like they did some _really_ clever marketing!
Great video!, did you notice the same framerate issues on metal slug while the console was hooked up to the TV? I remember that the original games had some framerate drops, but don't you think that here looks more often?
Dunno if anyone already said this but I'm thinking the stickers may be to put above the screen like a cabinets marque ? Appeared to look like the exact size.
I can swear I saw that this thing had a rechargeable battery in it which is one of the reason I pre-ordered it. But after watching more reviews and finding it out it doesn't, when connected to the tv the picture looks crappy and unless you buy the controllers it is very uncomfortable to play thins thing for more than 15 minutes, I am just going to have to pass on this. I just canceled my pre-order. I am telling you I can swear it was either gamestops page or amazons page that showed that it had a internal battery cause I was with my friend when I saw the pre-orders live and told him about how it says you can play it on the go. This system cost way too much for what it is. They should have just done like the snes and nes classic did cause what is the point of having the screen if you still have to plug it into the wall or computer to power it up.
I perfer the look of the Japan only model with the Red, White, and Bleu theme. And no, it's not because I live in the U.S. and am getting all patriotic lol... Come to think of it, almost all English speaking countries use red, white, and bleu for flag colours.... Except Canada, they forgot the bleu which is funny since Quabec is French and forgot the red... What was the video about?..... Oh yeah, can't wait till my NEO•GEO mini gets here.
Looks like the stickers are for that area above the screen. Cool that they made a little cabinet out of it to make it different and a little more collectible but the Switch is already my Neo Geo mini.
how is the latency?. I got a crappy tv and it's sensitive. For mame with the pi with metal slug and get this lag which won't let you jump before a ledge. you gotta run and jump a bit before the ledge. it's annoying. Hook it to your tv see if it's fine for you. FBA seems better on the computer thou. but that has better settings then mame.
Slowdown is normal on Metal Slug. Also, the controllers are in the style of SNK's older controllers. I own a NeoGeo Pocket color and the control stick on there is identical.
I got mine yesterday I'm very satisfied with it it's so much fun I love all the games on there I played most of the day I love it
Metal slug 2 has severe slow down all the time. When X came out, they fixed the slow-down.
Yeah the slow down was to do with how Metal Slug 2 was coded back in the day.
Brad DL I don't think that's only the second opus. Got the third one on Switch and it's really laggy as soon as there are explosions...I mean, maybe not "really laggy" but you can definitely feel the game slowing down.
all metal slugs do have slow down but Metal Slug 2 Specifically had HORRIBLE slowdown thats why they made Metal Slug X
Yeah its got to do with the code. Not the hardware.

Ron Hertzberg it’s not great but as a collector I gotta have it. You can spend a fortune trying to get all these games individually
The fact that here is no battery in the unit is why I decided not to buy it.
Or just own this just to own it I guess.
those are my favorite games growing up.......for 40 games that better then super nes classic..
but all the games are almost part 1-3 series ...
the SNK NEO GEO Mini is an impressive little system that packs a massive punch!! Cant wait to get it!!
As one of the people who got a neo geo x, ive been curious how this mini arcade will do. Hopefully better than the neo geo x. I am curious if you can add roms to this or not.
same
Once they hack it like the nes mini
Be patient. They'll get it, eventually.
Wow,decent length for the controller wire, my nes mini was barely 3 feet.
Love the Neo Geo mini. Is there a way to add more games to it yet???
bro you gotta learn how to operate your camera better. I can barely make out the screen with the lines running down it.
Now I just want someone to produce a kit that you can convert the innards of this Neo Geo Mini into a hand held unit without the knob, but with a Dpad.
Hahahah the way you mocked them jokingly like was hilarious.
Man, if I liked more of those games I'd love to have a mini arcade machine like that for old arcade games.
I think its cool and all but I can't justify it when I have a Switch. That's my NeoGeo Mini. Will these be around a while? I want to buy an SNES mini then I'll buy this. I already have nearly all these games + more on switch /:
NeoGeo was a dream as a kid.
Just got mine and i love it !!!
It's unique enough to warrant a purchase. SNK forever
Is there any possibility that they would release an arcade stick for this unit?
Would it be feasible to add in a rechargeable battery pack that this system would use instead of the charging port?
The slowdown is just the way that game plays and I *think* there may be stickers for the buttons (the game stickers you mentioned are for attaching to the "cabinet")?
SpawnWaveMedia, you're the man!
I'm curious if the controllers work for PC if you have a USB-C adapter or port.
I like those boxes hanging on the wall that looks great that's the same way I have my setup
Why didn’t they use the MVS versions, with options to turn on red blood, instead of white and green censored? Is there any chance turning the language to Japanese will change the region? Making it uncensored?
Where can I buy this?
So a stranger sends _you specifically_ a leak about this a few months back and it makes rounds around the internet, then the company sends you a review one and seems not to be upset that you leaked their stuff....
I dunno, it sounds less like it got leaked and more like they did some _really_ clever marketing!
Didn't you think the HDMI output was really fuzzy? Not like using RetroPI. I was sure you'd pick up on that.
Almost $200 to get the system, both controllers and a hdmi is just plain ridiculous.
Metal Slug ALWAYS stutters. It's just all of the craziness on screen. I think this is actually a pretty solid mini console for an arcade experience
What about the input latency?
I perfer the look of the Japan only model with the Red, White, and Bleu theme. And no, it's not because I live in the U.S. and am getting all patriotic lol... Come to think of it, almost all English speaking countries use red, white, and bleu for flag colours.... Except Canada, they forgot the bleu which is funny since Quabec is French and forgot the red... What was the video about?..... Oh yeah, can't wait till my NEO•GEO mini gets here.
Why would you blast the speakers and then not change them after? And if you watch the buttons than you don't see the screen.
Looks like the stickers are for that area above the screen. Cool that they made a little cabinet out of it to make it different and a little more collectible but the Switch is already my Neo Geo mini.
Does neogeo mini play in tv?
Got it on preorder. Wonder if Hackchi or a similar program will be able to root it to play extra or different games. That'd be pretty neat.
I wonder if the controller will work on the switch 🤔
SNK is back since 2016.
I need that NEO GEO mini arcade in my life!!
how is the latency?.
Does the KoF ‘98 have the intro song?
The slow down in Metal slug is how the game is.
@spawnwave can you install a battery in it ? Then maybe show us how
How long before it gets hacked?
Can the pad be used with PC/Raspberry Pi?
the original neo geo arcade machines had the same slow down. i spent days playing them all. full experience in a mini package. hahahahaha
Slowdown is normal on Metal Slug. Also, the controllers are in the style of SNK's older controllers. I own a NeoGeo Pocket color and the control stick on there is identical.
Is this guy for real? Has he never played metal slug? There is always slowdown
I wonder if things like the hori fighting stick works with this?
They should have made a Neo Geo mini. With the authentic look, controllers and ability to play on a HD tv.
Could you please plug a controller into your pc and see if it picks it up?
Since you have the international version they might not include a brick because a lot of different regions use different plugs and voltages.
Can you connect international version on your TV
daniel cardenas yes and i think it’s on sale now on Amazon for 30 and controllers for 20
when does it get released?
D3ltax55 October, preorders are at amazon.
