Basic Video Lighting: Using Flags and Nets to Cut Light

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- There are two parts to basic video lighting: lights and shadows. Lighting and light units usually get all the attention but what about the grip's art of cutting and netting light? Let's look out how we can use flags and nets to adjust the contrast in our shots on the sets and our actors. We also make a window pattern and make our own cucoloris.
Welcome to Pull My Focus, adventures in the world of digital filmmaking, where we provide you with the inside tips you need to produce great video.

The magic of nature is how light keeps changing. The magic of gripping is keeping light consistent.
Very well said. I'm stealing that (but I'll give you credit Sir Howard).
This is one of the best and most straightforward explanations I have seen on RUclips. Thank you so much for doing this.
You're very welcome thank you. Glad to hear it was helpful.
I don't need this info for my job, but it is simply so interesting that I kept watching! It is so interesting the see the detail and thought behind the science and art of lighting. Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome and glad you're enjoying our videos.
Very valuable content, here. Tanks for the video. You have a natural talent to explain your technique and the perfect tone of voice to deliver it. I’m glad I discovered you channel!
Heeey Bay Area Bolt Lighting Rentals! That was cool to see!
i never really appreciated how useful nets are, then again im new to lighting
I started in the biz as a grip/electric, learning to net and flag lights on set. They are so much fun to work with to mold the light for a shot.
@@PullMyFocus its really a beautiful art. i gain so much appreciation for what you guys do with content like yours. thanks for sharing
Congrats on the spon boys!
Thanks, Pranav.
Amazing! Thanks for posting.
thanks you sir... from india ❤❤❤
Great video. Thanks
You are very welcome. let us know if there are any other topics you would like to see.
Amazing!!❤️❤️
this was fantastic!! 💪🏼💪🏼 thank you!
Great video, learned a lot - how about some tips on the actual rigging - eg grip heads / stands / efficient ways to rig this stuff. Well done !
thank you!
Good knowledge.I like your video nats Training knowledge.this is Azlan Arain khan cinematographer.
Great video.
Used some flags on a period fashion shoot I did last week to cut light onto the set furniture from the octoboxes that were side lighting the scene. It’s an ongoing project so I’m now thinking thinking a net carefully positioned might reduce the glare on the first person in the shot nearest the light?
Yes a net would do the trick to bring their light level down.
Thank you for sharing this! Your tip on "Hollywooding" is really helpful. Do you know if there a DIY option for Flags and Nets?
Michael Savidge You’ve got to be careful with DIY type flags et cetera. As they are all made out of fire retardant materials.
OMG I must be old if I got the annette funicello reference I am only 46 I can't believe I remembered the Mickey mouse club watching reruns. instead of using Nets can you use the Barn Doors to shape the Light? Or is it better to use Annette lol
On my videos, I create an assembly edit and then toss it to Manu to finish it up and make it pretty...and to add unexpected surprises like Annette. I did a spit take when I first saw her pop up.
Yes, you can use the barn doors but you're limited because they're fixed to the light. Flags will give you a sharper shadow, more control to angle the shadows and if you're using a hot light (like tungsten) more distance from the light.
Great video but I got a question: whats the difference between using a net and a diffuser?
A net only cuts the light level down while diffusion changes the quality of the light by diffusing it. So you use a net to bring the light level down on a person, object, or part of the set. You use diffusion to soften the light that is hitting them.
Hello,
How and where to send some stills for you to comment regarding using of flags in film? An e-mail or other option?
Thanks for the great info
Which spot light you recommend to mimic a natural sunlight crisp that morning sun light ?
HMI par light
@@PullMyFocus what about light best for jewelry and rhinestones for best sparkle effects
what's a good starter kit to get for flags and nets
Good question. I don't know of any kits that I would recommend. The cheaper, fold-up nets have very mixed reviews which is why we don't use them. My recommendation is to buy them individually and from a major grip brand like Matthews, American Grip.
A basic set I would recommend:
18"x24": 2 flags, 1 single and 1 double net, 1 silk, 1 open frame
24"x36": 2 flags, 1 single and 1 double net, 1 silk, 2 open frames
@@PullMyFocus thank you soo much. Loving the channel.
@@BODYBYSTRUGGLE You are so welcome and glad you're liking our stuff. Now how about a vid on the proper way to do a lunge. I know I'm doing them wrong.
I’ve been considering trying to use screen door mesh to diy a set of nets, has anyone tried using that material before?
I'm starting as a DP and I just would like to know how to get rid of an unwanted shadow on a white wall on the back in a little RUclips studio.
You'll need to either add a light on that area of the wall or flag the light off the object throwing the shadow.
@@PullMyFocus Thanks! I'm starting to understand. I will add a light since I can't put a flag on this object since the object is the talent! Do you think that a classic fill light 45 degrees will work?
I eat all my cookies 😋
I want to buy Lights in amazon so suggest link
The Mole Richardson light is not sold on Amazon but there are lights we use listed in our Amazon store link in the description.
Pls think of new people who don't even know how to attach a flag on light stand.. Pls provide more info on what equipment is used to attach flags..
We do and we made a video on how to use a grip stand.
Here's the video we made on using a grip stand, ruclips.net/video/FN6Bz79QS58/видео.html
Red is not single always a Double 🙄
I wonder how many actually got the Mickey Mouse club reference?
If we were giving away weekly prizes, you would win this week sir.
Great info, but man this guy needs some energy. Starting to get that old man voice
