This is the 101 that I totally needed. As someone who has just started shooting indoors for portfolio purposes, I had never imagine how crazy the whole set can pile up before looking at the set at the end. Your generosity is hugely appreciated.
Hi. This is the best lesson in the world that I have ever met. The photos are amazing. The light patterns are immediately visible. I have been photographing for many years and now I wanted to improve my skills. This video is what I was looking for. Thank you very much again. I admire your skill and knowledge!!!!
This is what it have been looking for. As an aspiring mobile photographer who is limited only to the use of continuous light. I had been struggling with all the light setup i can get because i really do not want to use one light setup. I cannot thank you enough. Now I know what to buy.
This was a phenomenally useful guide, thank you so much! Most of the lighting set ups here are Faaaar outside of my budget, but its really nice to know the terminology nontheless!
Great video John Gress, the clock placement concept is fantastic visual to have. Thank you for your generosity and sharing so much in this great channel of yours!
Wow such great lighting class! I’m wondering 🤔 about the power of each light compared with the Key Light. Can I get good results with a half or 1/4 of power? I’m asking because I trying to apply this with Leds (continuous) and I don’t have all the equipment to try it out by myself.
@@JohnGress Right on! I'm in my 43 year as a studio /commercial photographer and employ the lighting your teaching- your a great teacher and this new generation hopefully feels grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge- all pro techniques - doesn't get any better
Thank you so much George. That is a huge complement! It's an honor and a privilege to hopefully provide photographers the guidance I always wish I had when I was coming up.
Could you do a video about a beginners elinchrom kit? Lights, modificators, stands, just something to start on, and build a more comprehensive rig later.
This kit is a great place to start. Elinchrom Lighting Kit D-LITE RX 4/4 SOFTBOX TO GO, Black (EL20839.2) amzn.to/35XZhbm If budget allows you could buy two elinchrom Threes and individual softboxes. Elinchrom THREE Adorama howl.me/ckOHJkaLdm0 B&H bhpho.to/46Sg90q I would be happy to build out a kit for you and send you links. What kind of things do you want to shoot and will you be shooting on location outside or only inside in a studio like environment?
Ok then I would still start with this. amzn.to/35XZhbm Then the next things I would add are and Elinchrom Three amzn.to/4dgoPl8 and this softbox amzn.to/3fRG5AH and this ring amzn.to/3p8ySEe plus the trigger dedicated to your camera brand amzn.to/3rPCubN
Great setups. Thank you. I have two 800W lights and i am using them as main light and back light. Can i use extra 2 speedlight with two stripbox in this setup at 6:53? Do 800W flashes overpower speedlights?
Man, i have seen so much of your videos where you have a lot of height in your studio. Jaleous! I have low ceilings.. But thanks for the great content 👍

"Back in the day" we sometimes _did_ use a hair light directly on dark hair from the front.

Great video! Really helpful! One of the best light breakdown videos I've seen.
Wow, thanks!
You said something about the flag. Could you please make a video about it and how it affects the lighting setup?

Love this and great advice about the boom stands. I've had a few close calls in the past. Changed my life. 😂
Thanks! I know of at least two occasions where I didn't sand bag something so bagged it incorrectly and then broke a light!

Thanks! You would need to turn the 800WS flashed down considerably because speed lights are about 60-100WS.

They sell that separately and I think it's called a hooded diffuser.

Remind me the famous portrait of Winston Churchill 😊
I know what you mean!
LMAO "its really that simple"
My light position name... Somewhere about here 😂
Right!
Are you talking about static lights or flash lights or both? Tbh the info wasn't that clear and I certainly do not feel I got a good understanding.
It doesn’t matter if you’re using continuous lights or flash lighting, the names will be the same.
98 percent is edited like crazy anyway 😂 just get a threaten light from home depot
