Hi Pie you are an amazingly talented person I always love to watch your tutorials and even use to take notes as if I’m in a college lecture. I respect your work and dedication 🎉❤ keep doing this great work 👍📷
As a beginner in the using light set up I really found this useful thank you. I will be watching plenty of other videos. I like the simplicity of the way you explained it too. Many RUclipsrs talk too fast and move onto the next thing you took your time explaining each one when you are doing a video, many brains cannot comprehend what's being said if you just move onto quickly he gives us time to watch and observe and you showed an image after each time. Thank you so much for the way you explained it given that many people also will be newbies to the light sourcing stuff. I think this is really good.
I also read somewhere that if you place the light lower and then place it so it is in a slightly upward angle. This can also increase the drama as well and it was a traditional thing when photographing men to make men look more masculine with more shadow and for women to have less shadow, can you confirm this? I've read it on a couple of sites? I thought they were crazy to be honest but I was curious to see what you think, it's so cool because you really can create some unique Lukes as well by trying some different things. I don't think there's any right and wrong way to do it. I just think we can play also and create different Lukes who is to say that the traditional way is always the best way. It's great to stick with traditional styles but it's also great to try some new things.
Great breakdown of lighting techniques. For future videos I'ld like to see Kiara use props in her/your shoots. Whatever you guys feel like playing around with. She has an elegant warrior woman look. You guys could add another dimension to your shoots with the use of props. Stay Creative and keep up the great work.
@@IamKiaraZayas For you, I'ld focus on creating characters/themes. I'ld start with two decorative asian fans & then complete the look with an elegant outfit to match. Decorative fans are great because they're lightweight & they won't restrict your movements. You could dance around with 'em, hold different postures, play with angles, etc... You could also hide your incredible eyes behind them for a more mysterious/playful vibe 😆
Very clear and straightforward.. Nice to actually learn something every so often.. Thankyou for vid.. Oh and your audio is very pro too... How about something about scattered/soft/harsh light maybe in future vids?? Nice one..
Hi Are you lighting the backdrop? if not, how would you add that in, for a wholly brighter look, without losing these nice facial looks?I Add another softbox facing the backdrop - positioned how? I really enjoy the calm voice, classy studio setting surrounding the set. thanks
Thank you so much for the video, I always want to learn about flash lighting, never found anything until this video. Can you do more video like this with 2 or 3 lights?
Great vid with thorough explanations, thank you! I do have a question, what mic setup were you using? It sounded excellent, and I'd like to get myself the same.
I've seen a LOT of people attempt to explain lighting patterns... Seriously... A LOT! On RUclips, at photography trade shows, even a professor teaching photography at a university a lifetime ago. Not one of them managed to explain the subject as clearly and without the use of (very poor) metaphors! Well done, this was a perfect teaching video, and I've been able to send this as a resource for people asking me questions about lighting patterns.
Such a great tutorial as always! Question, when you say light source 1 ft above subject are you referring to the strobe head or modifier? On the video the modifier is never a foot above unless meaning center? Thanks!
Well explained. It seemed to me that the shadow transition was hard-ish relative to the size of the softbox. As you use Profoto with the flashtube in a reflector the question is if you actually use the full diameter of the modifier. The diffusion panel will cast som light back to the reflection walls, but there may be a hot spot. Best way to check this is to shoot a photo of the diffuser when the flash pops (normal sync). I would also test-shoot without diffuser to check this point. The hot spot in the forehead ... I would add #6 that is used in female portraits a lot: very soft light that produces no shadows and no hot spots. Evenly lit.
I TRULY ENJOY PYE AND KIARA. PYE IV’E BEEN FOLLOWING YOU FROM DAY ONE AND YOUR ONE YOU ARE THE MOST WELL ROUNDED AND AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER ON RUclips, AND BELIEVE ME… I FOLLOW A LOT OF FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHS HERE ON RUclips. KIARA SUPER DOPE AS WELL. KEEP UP ALL OF THE AMAZING WORK PYE AND KIARA!
Fantastic demo/tutorial. Also, amazing audio and a very nice "stage" in which to present. The beauty of this video, besides great educational content, is the fact that the presenter is SO comfortable with his presentation... no one had to jump-cut the crap out of the piece. Great flow and a very nice, no BS presentation. It held my attention from beginning to end.
Harsh light is more brightness and highlight directly on face and no shadow. But Flat light is the light directly on your face but with little brightness and a few shadow.
How do you avoid the bright highlight on the forehead from the first two flash scenarios? I have clients when I do group headshots that do not want this look and I've struggled to find a solution other than lowering flash power.
I don't generally just like all of Pye's videos in terms of their style and language, so I'm not a natural fan. But ... this one is .... just very good! Logical storyline. Visuals and demonstrations to support it. Well-made slides to highlight key points. Nice anecdotal touches. Gear well within the reach of amateurs. A (beautiful) model with a great look to support demonstrations. Well filmed. Pleasant audio, pace, language. Great job, team (+Pye!).
Thank you your tuition is so clear and precise keep up the good work I am only starting portrait work but feel alot more confident watching your youtube
Very nice and direct (no pun intended) explanation of some fundamental lighting concepts. Of course, this was all with a single light, which is great, but now you could start to fill this out with companion videos using two or three lights. This could be the start of a nice collection or series of video on lighting that I think a lot of people would love to have access to. Other may have already commented in this below, so please forgive the repetition. Great job!
That's a very useful video Pye, come back with more! e.g. A real photoshoot with any model with one light setup and creating different styled images in studio just by changing the light position and maybe model outfit.
Pye Jirsa is an outstanding teacher, so I’m here for all the content. Whether it’s something I already know or not. Still going to stay tuned.
Agree!
Love this. Thank you!
Great explanation of the different lighting setups. I completely forgot about the broadside and short side rules ... thank you for the refresher
Hi Pie you are an amazingly talented person I always love to watch your tutorials and even use to take notes as if I’m in a college lecture. I respect your work and dedication 🎉❤ keep doing this great work 👍📷

great overview. I just bought a mannequin and will start working on my lighting skills this week. This is perfect!
Enjoy the talk. Maybe a big heavy on the mic bass boost?
Pye's very soft and low key approach to teaching makes it so enjoyable to watch.

What kind of props for example?

Pye and Kiara are the best team for photography! KEEP THESE TWO COMING BACK! I NEED MORE!
This was a great tutorial! Pick up so much in a very short time. However, one quick question. Are you only using one light source for these patterns?
Thank you so much for the video, I always want to learn about flash lighting, never found anything until this video. Can you do more video like this with 2 or 3 lights?
Great vid with thorough explanations, thank you! I do have a question, what mic setup were you using? It sounded excellent, and I'd like to get myself the same.
This was good thank you. Do you have video using two of camera flash? Such as where to replace them.

This is fantastic! Thank you for such a clear tutorial. If a model has a "good side", would you typically favor the light on that side?
Anderson Larry Brown Angela Taylor Kimberly

Great video and explanations .Thank you ! Could you do a similar with two lights ?

Glad you loved it!
people confuse harsh light with flat light.
Harsh light is more brightness and highlight directly on face and no shadow.
But Flat light is the light directly on your face but with little brightness and a few shadow.

"I don't want to look shiny" is the comment I hear.
Make it soft
Doing a good Job
Thank you!
