A note from someone with ADHD: Remember that lack of stable eye contact does not always mean lack of interest. Individuals with autism, ADHD, or other neutro divergent traits may also find it difficult to maintain contact, no matter their amount of interest or attentiveness in the conversation.

    • @dymphrpeeters8799
      @dymphrpeeters8799 2 года назад +10

Exactly!! It is really important to know that not *everyone* communicates the same. And I even think that in this case neurotypicals are even more likely to make eyecontact even when they are disinterested, simply to not hurt the other person. Neurodivergent people probably wont bc eyecontact can actually hurt.

Crossing your arms is actually a self-soothing method. The toughest people, such as bosses and leaders, cross their arms more frequently. This is because deep down, they are scared. When someone crosses their arms, it may SEEM like they're armoring themselves because they always seem so tough, like a shield or a sword, but it's really more like a one-person hug.
Keep up the great work, Psych2Go! (My favorite of these was #19!)

Take up rope splicing and macrame... Your grip will improve as you improve your "Turk's Head" knots and "Fox and Geese" decorations as well as backsplicing and making quality "eyes" in three-strand "twisted" lines (the simplest to splice)... It's relatively simple to learn, and decent spliced ropes are in demand. Lots of people want them, will pay for them, but do NOT want to do the splicing themselves. ;o)

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464

@@anuragsosa Okay, bear with me here. I used to have terribly weak hands... I bought those "grip exercise" gadgets, and even regularly spoke to the coaches in middle and high school, trying to improve them...
Then I joined the Navy, and became a "deck ape", and splicing ropes and decorative knots became a way of life.
As a hobby, while you will spend money on things like guide books and the cord, rope, string, and seizing thread (waxed nylon) you will work your hands by untwisting the twisted ropes enough to feed strands through. At first, it's easily exhausting, but as you repeat it over time, you'll improve until (like me now) you will be able to crush food and soda and beer cans in your bare hands.
AND you'll be able to get useful loops and back-splices in ropes people will pay you money for. They'll even ask for (commission) specific sized loops and stuff.
Macrame is decorative knot-work. The "Turk's Head" and "Fox and Geese" are terms for making a specific knot or pattern of knots and weaves with cord of whatever size befits your project. In fact, recently I sold a plain piece of old pipe with a Turk's head at either end, and a series of half-hitches (they spiral around along the pipe) between the two ends for about $200 (U.S.)... so I turned about 7$ worth of colored cord and a piece of junk into a $200 piece of art... AND got the exercise to maintain my hand strength...
You can probably Search "Macrame" as well as "Rope splicing" to get some of the specifics online. The thing is, you're going to be grasping hard and pulling on ropes and cords to get the knots and splices tight and proper. It will work all the muscles that pertain to your handshake, granting you at least the option to give a solid firm grip when and if you wish or need it.
Just my experience, but those spring-loaded grip gadgets don't seem to do the job... at least not for me. ;o)

@@fluffy7804 While I can definitely tell you that nowhere in greece does shaking your head left and right mean yes, that isn't the case for nodding.
A downwards nod, that starts from your head going from up to the down position is a sign for yes. This is also true for repettive shaking of the head up and down. The opposite upwards nod, followed by raised eybrows or a clicking of the teeth ("tsk") signifies no. From what I've noticed this is what actually confuses people with nodding in Greece.

Okay- so the moment I saw small touches, I felt happy because I have a cousin that lives in California and I only see him during thanksgiving, usually when I’m tired or seem upset he gives me a small pat on the back or head and honestly it makes me very happy and I know that I definitely bond with him, he’s more of like a brother to me. Little things like these can make a person feel every nice, safe, and comforted, especially with me since most of the time I get stressed or anxious easily

Okay i immediately have something to say. Crossing arms is often for self soothing purposes. So it does not have to mean you are closed off or dishonest or reluctant in sharing information. It might actually show discomfort in the situation (which yes, can also cause a more closed off social position). It is more a sign of feeling the need to self soothe than that you are defensive.

Growing up I didn't know the importance of body language because my anxiety was so bad that I never looked at the other person directly unless something really grabbed my attention that it was the only thing on my mind. All the talking I did was just online, usually in text but sometimes on the mic. This changed when I got in VR to get rid of anxiety. Between being shocked at how much I move around when I talk since I thought I always stood/sat still (because I recorded some videos of myself out of curiosity), and seeing other people move around when they talked in VR, I started not looking away so much in real life and realized just how many tiny little signals we subconsciously give off all the time that can actually change how we interpret a message. So yeah, body language is actually a big deal.
Crossing arms - Sometimes I hear that it's not actually being defensive, but subconscious trying to relax a bit because stuff can be stressful. Hence why people can cross their arms when getting into a heated argument as well. I used to cross my arms all the time because I had tons of anxiety, but I don't do it so much anymore because I'm not getting stressed out that much when talking to people.
Slouching - Yeah it could mean that..... Though in my case 9 times out of 10 slouching is just because I'm tired. Make sure you get your sleep guys! =p
Tilted body - I mean I do this all the time even if I am interested in the topic, but it's generally because seats IRL are placed at inconvenient locations if I want to be comfortable, and in if I sit in VR I like putting my legs up on the couch and it's a little weird to have my legs pointing towards people. With that said though, if something catches my attention hard enough my body will subconsciously shift towards the person even if it's not comfortable.
Repetitive motions - Yeah another thing like crossing the arms. Just a thing to relax. I feel like I always do something like this subconsciously, especially if I'm standing up.
Direct eye contact - Very similar to the tilted body thing really.
Types of smiles - Not much I can say about this *shrug*
Hand Shake - I always hear this. While there is some truth to it, I try not to shake too hard. People have squeezed my hand so hard that it hurt for hours so many times as a kid that I make sure I never squeeze too hard. How hard/soft you should shake the person's hand depends on the individual person too. I always find it really strange, but then again most physical stuff feels strange to me because I always kept my distance from people IRL most of my life.
Imitation - This is actually a very very easy way to become better friends with people quickly. While this thing is usually subconscious, it can be a good tool if used consciously. I've been doing it from time to time and it can help break the ice a lot sometimes. Also, this is a tactic that people like to do when they are trying to sell you stuff as well. This also extends to anything else about you, not just body language.
Leaning forward - Again with the slouch thing, I usually do this because I'm tired lol. Though for people that are actually awake, yeah, not much to add here.
Raised eyebrows with no signals - When my eyebrows raise it's usually out of surprise because I wasn't expected a certain response. With no other signals I'm usually just tired and not actually disatisfied lol.
Raised eyebrows with signals - Like I just said, usually it's out of surprise of what someone said. Being attentive is kinda implied because if you weren't, you wouldn't really be emoting.
Proximity - Yes it can be an indicator of how close a relationship is, but don't forget that other things can effect the distance you have between you and someone else as well. Of course when initially starting a conversation you'll probably be farther away and as a conversation continues the distance will get smaller overtime to a point.
Flushed Face - .... I mean yeah. Can't say anything else about this.
Stiffness - Lieing or hiding something. I haven't thought about that specifically, I just always lumped it with the typical stuff you get when feeling anxiety. After all, when my anxiety was at it's worst, my muscles would stiffen to the point of getting really sore at just the thought of leaving the house. So I always figured feeling stiff in general was just a general nervous thing, just on a much smaller scale.
Blinking - Can't comment on experience here because I've literally never payed attention to how frequently someone blinks (unless something got in their eye lol)
Lip movement - Licking lips meaning you're attracted to someone? I haven't crushed on many people so I wouldn't know. After my first relationship being practically perfect and lasting for years, I've been just super picky ever since then, especially since I got too many projects to go mess with love.
Small touches - Yeah... This is just so common everywhere that I can't really say anything about it.
Head motion - Interesting, I didn't know that at all. Just one of those things that's important to look up when visiting other places. Just like with anything else social, a lot of it is just learned overtime by seeing how other people act.
Indirect eye contact - Yeah those 3 things are the most common. I used to not look at people because of anxiety, because looking at people would get me so nervous that I wouldn't be able to continue the conversation. That's not the case anymore, but now whenever it happens it's generally because I'm falling asleep and I don't want to just stare at somebody because I'm looking at their body movements of my exhaustion. So I look away so I can focus more on what they are saying.... I'll say it again, make sure you get sleep everyone! Talking to people is much much easier when you are actually awake and not running on 3-5 hours of sleep for multiple days in a row. =p

This is totally useless for me. I have Aspergers, which means I CAN'T READ BODY LANGUAGE. I can't. I have tried and tried, over and over and over and over again, and again and again and again. And because of my anxiety, depression, and ADHD, I give off all the wrong messages without realizing it. Because of my Aspergers, I stim, which means, biting my nails, tucking my hands under my legs for the pressure, or tucking them under my arms, and I can't control it. My repetitive motions keep me focused, direct eye contact is painful for me, so I *have* to use indirect contact, smiling feels forced, I *hate* it when people stand close to me (doesn't matter how long I've known them), my flushed face means I am under extreme duress and am most likely having an anxiety attack, I stiffen up when I am uncomfortable around people, and I lick my lips because they're *dry*.
