I have both aspergers and an anxiety disorder, so you can imagine how much of a mess I am sometimes 😂 Thankfully, I’m pretty bubbly, and most people don’t react badly to me or mistake me for being aggressive, but an old manager of mine unfortunately took my lack of eye contact, fidgeting and nervous body language around her as me being shady, and accused me of all sorts of rubbish! Excuse me, ma’am, I’m acting like that because I’m scared shitless of you and your psychotic emotional outbursts, not because I’ve done something wrong 💀 I don’t like the thought that my anxiety might be making other people anxious!

    Dear Georgia,
whenever I watch your videos, I feel at peace. It's like getting an actual therapy for me, except I've never felt this secure with any of my therapists. You're so passionate, caring and understanding, and you speak so calmly and kindly about things that I deeply dislike about myself that it kinda makes me feel like all these traits aren't that big of a deal. Not something to be hated or judged for. Can't even put into words how much this feeling means to me, truly soothing. You're incredible. Much love x

Body language is a great study of survival because we are all part of different cultures. Growing up in entropy I learned so much living in criminal invested neighborhoods versus middle class and upper class cultures. We are very unique and amazing.

I sometimes cover my mouth partly with my fingers, when I'm really interested in listening to someone, as well as leaning forward. I think it's because I'm someone who talkes a lot, and when someone is talking about something I'm interested in I really want to participate, but I also really want shut up and not talk over them.

I have ADHD, anxiety, depression, control issues, some other complicated things. I don't have normal body language. It's also dictated heavily by my energy. Not my mood or anything like that, but if I was chill and just wanted to relax, my demeanor might convince you that I wouldn't care if you died but I'm just tired.

@@jamester0772 I don't have meds for my anxiety and depression. I have strategies to handle my anxiety so good it basically doesn't exist. My depression is mild, I have strategies to manage that. I believe you should use medication, it can really help and if it doesn't, there are millions of medications and different doses that can work better or worse. Plus, you have nothing to lose with meds. If they don't work you don't have to take them. I'm supposed to have medication for my ADHD but I need to have an appointment to check up on me so I can get a refill and I haven't gotten around with it although the medication for my ADHD is extremely helpful.

As someone who is autistic, I have a very hard time reading peoples body language and tone which often makes interactions with people difficult. Usually I will just stay alone because I like being alone where I don't have to worry about that, but when I have to talk to people I just mimic what I see characters do which is very helpful.

I experienced the culture dance when I lived in Spain. It used to kinda freak me out bc they'd get so close, but once I realized why they were getting so close, I was able to adjust accordingly make myself get used to the difference in distance. Very interesting, simple difference I hadn't truly considered before I moved there!

My brother and his nervous laugh, it never clicked for me that it was nerves, which might have made coexistence easier. Problem is I always took it as mocking, not quite understanding his tone, and it only took me close to 40 years to figure out I was somewhere on the low end of the spectrum. Good part is that it's all learned, and since that sort of passive learning never really worked for me, it was just a matter of paying attention to the context in addition to the verbiage. That's probably why writing is a skill, you need to convey all those extra bits like tone and intonation, and the only tools available are rather black and white. The smart ones throw in a picture or two to defy conventions.
80% of communication is non-verbal IIRC, and paying attention will do loads for your understanding of other people, as well as helping you express yourself. At 6'3", I can be a bit intimidating in the flesh, so we make sure to sit down if we want an argument to go anywhere. It's the awareness of little things like that which are a boon to whatever you might be up to. Avoid filler words, DO NOT RUSH YOURSELF, and adopt an open posture is general best practice for introducing yourself. I like that you touched on the range of personal space, Romance countries being comfortable at about an elbow's length away can cause frictions when your Canadian or American friends might be more relaxed at an arm's length, and it's the first thing to notice is how far away someone is standing when they engage.
You can take shortcuts in understanding if it's friends, but whenever it might matter, make sure you're getting your message across by asking for some feedback. Taking care to do this with important parts is also an easy way to double up on teaching something, like a quick 30 second review to make sure it was understood. But that starts bleeding into teaching and there are whole libraries on THAT topic. Getting back to body language, establishing shared mores is usually very helpful, and learning to negotiate those mores also helps your cause.

I have body language of course, but I also move around a lot and make faces and physically react to my thoughts sometimes and do a lot of really random expressions. 50% of my movement is my mood, energy, body language, and another 50% is just random.

@@GeorgiaDow No problem. I did have a question for you as someone who has suffered through depression do you think my videos would visually summarize depression? I have two. Suffering in Silence (based on a Silent Voice). Highly recommend you look at it was as great dive into suicidal psychology imo. (also a silent voice is a great deep dive into depression) and Invisible scars based on Welcome to the NHK. A video based on what depression may look like to people who don't understand. (based it off my own experience) I combined two separate mediums showing what people will see from the outside vs the person dealing with it personally. If not I completely understand from a youtube perspective. (copyrights can be complicated) Will continue to watch you future videos, and love how you may help others who deal with similar problems. My body language is awful I fidget and don't make eye contact. Then when I realize that I try to think of ways to relax. Then that causes hyper awareness for me Then I leave the store and sit in the car. I'm also worried people see me as aggressive, because I'm just a big guy. Georgia! You just gave an online acting class! (By the way...Starting at 2:46...Intimidated right down to my toes...Shudder.) I did several plays, in one I literally "carried a spear" as a royal bodyguard. A friend of mine came with two of her guy friends. The guy friends said they would NOT like to ever meet me on a dark street or alley. She laughed, because all she could see was her huggable lovable friend...no matter the setting or whatever my body language. There once was a discussion about intonation and how many meanings a person could communicate with just the word "dude". There was spacy, friendly , surprised, in awe, confused, excited, disapproving and a fearful "are you a serial killer" kind of thing.

What I always wonder is, though, all these types of body languages that "mean" something usually only "mean" that to the recipient. The one doing those types of body languages could very well not be feeling whatever they are giving off, which makes body language incredibly incorrect, and to do it "correct" you actually have to fake it, rather than being natural in most cases.
So is it really all that healthy and fair to judge people by their body language and expect people to give off the "correct" body language? Especially when we also bring in different cultures with different body languages.
For example, I'll never forget how when I still went to kindergarten, day-in-day-out caretakers would ask me why I'm sad or upset and try to motivate me to do something else to have fun, when really I was enjoying myself just fine, I simply wasn't actively smiling.
