The new PlayStation you swore you couldn’t live without. The heap of clothes in your wardrobe that you said you might have a need to wear again someday. We hoard so much stuff and convince ourselves that we need it all. But when our eyes glow red and the fire truck blares its sirens in the distance, none of that seems to matter. Why then do we cling on to these things so much?

As a minimalist, I feel like less stuff gives me more time for myself. The less I have to worry about my possessions, the more I can care about my personality and passion. I am happy that this topic gets more attention right now, but I don't like that it is being used as a marketing strategy by people just to get more money or that people see it as a trend. A style of clothing that will get changed after two years. It doesnt reflect the core values of Minimalism.

I began my minimalism journey last year. I've bought nothing and sold or donated a lot of my possessions. It got to the point where I've almost regretted certain sentimental things I've sold, only to not regret it months later as I realized I wasn't using it or caring about it anyway. It's a tough change, it's definitely a process and requires time and patience. Minimalism is not changing what you have into these clean looking products, it's getting rid of everything you don't need. I'm glad the video points that out, albeit, only at the very end. The issue is in the mind, it is convincing yourself you don't need this and that. Everyone comes up with a reason to keep something.

My suggestion is to live like you're homeless even though you arent! You essentially carry what you need even if those things are sitting in your home. Buy things that are robust and last for a long time, and spend your free time(and extra money) with family, friends and nature. You will thank yourself I promise!

I think Maximalism was one of the BEST marketing ploys to get people to keep buying things. Not only that but MORE things. Maximalism houses are borderline hoarder levels of stuff. These acts are stimulated by the fear of missing out, fear of what people we don't know will say about us, fear of an ordinary life. Minimalism is a Stoic approach to owning possessions, detaching value of the individual from the value of the things they own, understanding that these are two separate things, and that the lesser we are attached to our possessions, the more we see and focus on improving our value as an individual. But for most people, it's just easier to judge a book by its cover.

I moved towards it many years ago. I hate owning anything more than I have time for. If I don’t use it regularly I get rid of it. I keep as little possible of a wardrobe I can. Keep my kitchen simple and limited to a few utensils and pots and pans. I don’t care for decorative pieces and I don’t celebrate holidays as I believe they only promote consumption. I tell people not to give me gifts because I don’t want them to burden me with something physical not of my choosing. Therefore I do not give them either because I appreciate the possibility of negative impact. I have no sentimental attachment to things anymore and I don’t allow nostalgia to make me keep things. If someone gives me so much as a card, I will appreciate it, and then most certainly throw it away. I am not keeping an inventory of keepsakes I didn’t ask for. I have a high functioning mind with good memory I don’t need keepsakes. All of these things free up finances to allow you to channel them towards things you are truly passionate about. Many people try to have their hands in too much today, and master nothing. I am happier by choosing a few things I love to do with my time, and focusing all my efforts towards that. I don’t have a Bentley and a mansion but I have some nice roller skates and some camping gear that bring me joy. They keep me healthier than a Bentley and mansion would too. Health is wealth imo and for me minimalism promotes it. If everything I owned went up in flames tomorrow, it would be an inconvenience, but not the emotional loss many would suffer.

Minimalism is simply questioning what "enough" really means for you and how everything you own affects your overall quality of life - because, in fact, they do! And it's realizing that QUANTITY doesn't equal QUALITY, you choose which one you value more. It shouldn't really be seen as an aesthetic lifestyle, it should be just a guiding principle, a value we can practice in our lives. I also can appreciate that it has become a trend in the popular culture, but it's just another visuals trend, I also know it will just come and go like all trends do, it will get replaced once we've had enough of it. But minimalism as a principle/value is a life strategy you can practice that will never go out of style.

The thing with minimalism being turned into another commodity struck such a cord with me. I was one of those guys who had been watching more and more of those 'minimalist setups' on RUclips and while at the start, I did feel something was wrong about the way they connected their videos to 'minimalism', I too was soon sucked into the rabbit hole of aesthetically pleasing content meant to grab you in it's hold stronger and stronger the more you watch it. It had become like a porn addiction to me; I couldn't enjoy something without those aesthetically pleasing bland looks. I made unnecessary purchases, unnatural modifications to my things just to make it look more 'minimalist'. This video was an eye opener. Minimalism is not what the RUclipsrs and corporates try to sell you. It is something only you can embrace for yourself. Sure, those videos will still be aesthetically pleasing, and i will still be drawn to watch them, but they will no longer appeal to me as they did before. I will know that true minimalism is making perfect use of what you have, without getting more if you don't need it.

It’s a nightmare for the brain because I want to be productive and feel at peace in a space, but can’t let go of the items creating the anxiety in first place. Or let go of the impulses to stop thinking about it. This internal conflict in my mind has a profound effect on my creativity and “taking action on what matters”, mostly because I waste valuable time and energy trying to “reduce the chaos” and other trivialities.

Because at the end of the day, as you live, you create values, you have to spend it somewhere. Whether you want to buy dopamine by giving it to other, or support your local business by buying products, you spend it

Every passover (pesach) we clean the house thoroughly and get rid of clutter in our homes, but this passover (almost a year ago) I just didn't stop. Every Saturday I look in my dresser (that is acting as a closet) and little cabinet and think what I can throw away or give to my siblings. The starting point- there's no room at any drawer to add something new (sometimes I couldn't even close them!), no room to add to the cabinet, no room to store anything under my bed. Now: half of the drawers are empty, there's nothing under my bed, in the cabinet there are only shoes now. I'm at the middle of my journey. It's getting harder now because I have to look now at my art supplies. But I'll get there.

    Minimalism is easy.
Most people can't afford much anyway.
Also, it's extremely simple once you are on your own.
The moment you have a family, partner, children and relationships, business connections and else... Suddenly, your focus is smart investment - You need to have items that ease your burden to have more time for everything.
Say what you will, but certain products give ease of life.
People that buy for the sake of buying, more do it for the sake of saying they did it, showing off and trying to get credibility as being wealthy.
People that buy to ease their burdens, invest their earned value back into themselves and what matters to them.
Life is a time management game for the most of it.
The more you have at stakes, the better you learn the game.
A simple minimalist might miss allot of key concepts by just not needing to manage enough for it to get challenging.

I'm not a minimalist, but since the last 3 years my family hasn't had enough money to randomly buy new worthless junk to make us happy, I don't understand that short term happiness from it and I'm kind of glad I don't. I hope it stays with me as an adult so that I'll be really thinking before I buy something, about if I really want/need it. I feel like it'll save me some money and I'll be less wasteful :)

Before getting/buying something I think of three things:
    1) Does it help me save time/get more out of my day? (example: air fryer saves me tons of time that would have otherwise been spent cooking)
    2) Does it benefit my health? (example: an air purifier vastly improved my health)
    3) Does it help me save money? (mattress and pillow protects ensure your mattress and pillows last ages)
If it's either of the above, i get/buy it.

I love having things.I really like having cool stuff and let my belongings become a part of my identity and I think that your surroundings really play a big part on your identity and overall happiness. So for a minimalistic person, this minimalistic lifestyle is probably preferred and can make you more happy, however for me ive always been into a mess of items and belongings, something like the 11th doctors tardis and the weasleys house from Harry Potter. I love the creativity and Wonder of having a ton of cool, sometimes almost magical items in my life, as it skapes my surroundings and my life. With that being said I know that materialistic happiness can only take you so far, but to say materialistic things cant bring you happiness is something i strongly disagree with. I understand that we live in a world where we Are selfishly consuming however, so I try to not be to materialistic that way. Also, I understand the concept of the minimalistic lifestyle and I think that it’s a really Nice concept that doesnt work for everyone in terms of happiness. But I really respect all you minimalistic people out there and I think you should do what ever makes you happy.

    Fair enough, BUT..
I think there’s a difference between liking things and liking the newness and/or status that comes with the things.
Personally, I get very attached to objects. Yeah, I am autistic and that is probably at least partially why. It feels like a personal relationship to me, much like children with their stuffed animals. I don’t buy or keep things for status or to “keep up,” though my brother does. Clutter and COLOUR makes me really happy. I make things constantly! Everything sparks joy for me! In the fire scenario, I would panic. I would try to grab as many things as possible, risking my life. I’ve had nightmares about this exact scenario throughout my childhood.
Not saying my way is the best, or even the healthiest. But it’s fundamentally me.
I just found it interesting to put my personal perspective out there too.

Life is too short for bs. My rule of thumb is if I can't be a week without something, it's a clear sign to me that I need to get rid of it. Jesus said 2000 years ago "do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". I find that wise. Consuming becomes unhealthy at the moment your heart belongs to what you consume, for then you are the one being consumed.

I love the video, but I found it funny during the part he was talking about minimalism and not being a consumer, it showed a lady in an empty house opening up a cabinet just completely loaded with liquor bottles.😀
Oh the irony of stock videos...
But on the note of minimalism and consumerism, I have a lot of stuff but I don't collect it for clout... I collect things like records, which gain in value. For my own Joy ...so in other words one does not have to go minimalist just collect the right things. And buy them used. I never go shopping for new stuff
My walls and my shelves are covered with Trinkets and cool stuff that I like and that represent me. It's comfortable

Happiness gained with the help of external objects is created by delusional mind. When you buy a new car you are so satisfied and happy in the beginning. But later on by using the same car you gain less happiness. Even though the external object is same your happiness get lower over time. With this example you can conclude that the happiness is delusional and created by the mind and its not something received from the object. That's why the Buddha explained craving for external objects cause suffering. But external objects are useful. However, we must understand the delusion the mind creates to seek more and more external objects to make us happy. The initiative to minimalizing is an effect.. Realizing the reason for unsatisfying nature is the cause. If you understand this cause and effect you can purchase whatever useful without craving. It helps you to liberate from suffering up to a certain extent.

I don't think that's necessarily true, nor is that the point of minimalism (to me). The point of minimalism, to me, is to reduce material possessions so you can better appreciate both the material and non-material things you do have.
Simply having less is not the goal in and of itself (to me).
