Thing is, we assume out feelings to be unintelligent. They aren't.. they are just as smart and as fallible as the rest of us..
We shouldn't make decisions of feeling *alone*, but it'd be stupid to ignore them.
Do you get a bad feeling about going one way instead of another way on your way home? If they're normally both safe ways home, listen to your gut. You may find there was a good reason you felt that way, even if you didn't know why yet.
We pick up far more information than we are consciously aware of. Don't lightly ignore it in the name of rational superiority. There is nothing national about trying to decide things with only part of your mind, and with only part of available information.
I actually really like the saying "Everyone is a slave to their will." I just wonder how accurate that really is.

This is why I don't hold on to tension. People only think, feel, and do what they're capable of thinking, feeling, and doing. If you quietly watch people long enough, they become predictable. It's calming. And when they do what you predict, it's like a little nugget of irony and comedy. Everyone has their role. Just laugh it off and keep it moving

No not really, not at all. Many brilliant intelligent scientists are also theist that believe in free will. According to this man’s claim one would be predisposed to one thing & yet throughout life you have people that swear by their mothers name they believe in science but then turn to god AND vice versa. Logic tells you, you would be gear towards one not both. It’s a juxtaposition. If the theory of evolution is about survival than the idea of even needing to make such existential question & for it to even bother a human so much that they’d take their own life away or become depressed over it does not make sense. It makes evolution look unreliable

Some of us now may be suffering so immensely due to the fact that people have hurt us. We often take betrayals and ill-treatment from other people so personally and it causes deep wounds. I think an understanding of determinism can actually be very freeing rather than depressing and can heal some of the deepest wounds we have. If we understand that these people didn't know any better or couldn't actually act in the way that would have prevented our pain we can stop taking things so personally and begin to heal. Use this to free yourself from hate and bitterness you might be holding onto. It's one of the best uses of this information.

This, to me, is the same as potentially finding out that we live in a simulation. It is a shock at first, but then I accept it and I realise that it makes no difference, it changes nothing for most of us in our daily lives. No matter how or why, we still exist, we still coexist. Why would we let this change us if we know that living our lives and being a good person is something we have already been doing for quite some time and that that is something that we are apparently relatively good at? Judging by everything we know, we humans, for whatever reason, are relatively good at building societies and cooperating, why would we let the societies for which we all worked, and still work, so hard to create and maintain fall apart because of something like this? I will simply continue to live my life, I will continue to be me, you will continue to be you and we will continue to be human, will continue to be we. I do not need purpose to be created for me, I can do that myself. Whether that is actually me doing it or my brain does matter, but it also does not. The same goes, or at least, I believe it should, for us all. We can create our own purpose just as we have created our own societies. Again, whether that is our brains doing this for us or not does matter, but it also does not. So, live your life, be a good person in whatever way you can and take care of yourself and others. Whether I am saying that to you or your brain does not really matter, as long as it has the desired affect.

I can say that if I burn so and so much fuel in my motor In so and so much time my wheels will get a torque of so and so many newtonmeters and therefore my car will accelerate to so and so high velocities which leads to it moving so and so many meters... That's order, that's predictability up to a constant factor.... You don't get this with chaotic systems, you simply can't predict it.... The only thing you can predict is that in the end everything will have it's most stable state... Which would be a hot and simple nothingness... But you can't predict how we'll land there and therefore not the course of a life

I never had the feeling of having free will. Since I was a kid I knew that I cannot do anything else that what I'm doing. It almost feels like you're a character in a videi game or a book or movie. You make "choices" but in reality choices are made for you and you could not have chosen anything different than what you chose. Even moral choices, like being kind or being loyal are not free choices, at least the way I feel it. I could not cheat on my boyfriend even if I wanted to. There would be something holding me back. And if I did cheat, there would be nothing I could do to stop myself at that moment. It's difficult to explain but I just don't feel like anyone had another choice than what they did, only the illusion of other choices... No matter how many times we rewind the past things are gonna play out exactly how they did...

I think one must know what the human consciousness is first before making conclusions such as this video. Neuroscience as a whole has no clue what the abstract consciousness is. They don't know where it's sourced from, its material or how it works. It's all a toss-up of various ideas and philosophy right now. Whatever it is, it is either not of this world or in the quantum realm of reality. either way, it's a complete mystery.
--What you're saying without actually saying it, is that our subconsciousness is forcing our decisions and we are in a form of auto-pilot mode. While I will grant you that our entire "ego" is nothing but our external experience, I can't grant you that the subconsciousness is literally forcing our choices. It makes more sense that it influences them and we decide based off this influence. Therefore there is still a choice involved.
The reality is clear: we are almost entirely a product of external experience and genetic. BUT...choice is still the last bit of who we are and what we can do.

Even better, the things that go great in my life I now cherish as a gift, where as in the past I would have been so busy trying to control everything that I might not have noticed the good things when they happened. So that has been my experience. Cheers Pete

For me, I try and take the best of both worlds, the logical side believes I have no free will just like everyone else (so anger and guilt are reduced), but I'm also human and see the value in pride and things like that which can benefit my life even if technically I'm not deserving of them.

It's a Fallacy of False Dilemma to say that people either have free will, or they don't. Because such an idea excludes a third possibility of having some free will within constraints and limitations. When you exclude this third possibility without any justification or explanation, then this is a mistake in thinking and in logic. And this is a mistake this video makes.
People are limited and constrained by their biological and psychological needs and wants. But within these constraints, people have some freedom of choice.
When I make a conscious choice whether to eat a banana or an apple, then I choose between my feelings about the banana and the apple. So, I need to become aware of my feelings, before I can make my choice. And if you can measure my feelings faster than I can become aware of them, then you can predict my choice from these feelings.
But this doesn't mean that I have no free will. It just means that I think with my feelings, and my brain processing is slow enough that you can measure my feelings faster with electronic equipment, than my brain can measure these feelings and become aware of them. This is evidence of slow information processing in the brain, rather than evidence for determinism and lack of free will.

My apologies, but you have third option that states, that you have some form of free will and it is "the illusion of free will"
And let me explain with an example:
If you are inside a simulation from the beginning of your life. How you gonna know that this is not the real world but a simulation?
Now we can say that if a third party member tells you that you are in such situation. Of course then one will refuse such statement even if you show them the out side, because it will cause an existential threat for the self. Yet if one endure such stress upon his being, it can choose:
      1. To preserve the old self and to return to the simulation by saying that "This was just a dream."
      2. To accept the two forms of reality and merge them for his benefit.
      3. To leave the simulation and deny the old self to create a new one.
Remark: Third option is expensive in terms of energy, time and stress. I don't recommend it. Yet it is interesting to explore if you have the Will. :D
Ps. I consider myself, between option 2 and 3. And by that I gave you in between option so overall 4 options. ^_^

No, false, all it proves is that the brain (which for all intents and purposes is you) simulates the action before you do it. Before you speak to someone, you simulate your words in your head before you speak. Your brain activity just shows that you're thinking, that you're thinking about speaking, and that you're selecting the order of the words you're going to use. Nowhere does that suggest that you aren't the one deciding what to say or not choosing the order.
This is useful because while climbing a tree you have to look at the tree and then your brain simulates you climbing the tree and simulating the path. You already know you want to climb a tree, you're selecting which tree to climb and you are simulating the path, which often times you have to deviate a little bit. As you climb you look up and you further simulate the possibilities of what you can do to continue climbing. We have free will, the fallacy is you are separating your brain from 'you' which is impossible because your consciousness and subconscious are linked, they are both you.

It was weirdly funny but I understood that we already know everything there is to know at the level of Super consciousness or the ultimate self. Everything that’s exists is YOU, but the ONE cannot experience itself so breaks itself into infinite particles ( in our case bodies) & lowers its vibration in order to create what we think is reality & in turn we think of ourselves as individuals which in turn creates the ego. You’re not self-made, you’re a result, so what ? If you don’t like who you are, you can still change. Even if the envie of changing is not created by you, it will still be pleasing to accomplish. It’s not your choice because it’s a happening, tho it’s still who you are. Don’t think to much, don’t care to much. As cringe as it sounds, just be happy and proud

so, according to this video, putting aside abnormal people for a while, we can assume that, our subconscious is what controls us, it makes all the decisions for us, speaking, moving, thinking, you name it........ so, in a way we act for our subconscious, we speak for it, we think for it...... it means we are just a mode of execution for our subconscious, OR we are our subconscious. OR I could say that we control it..... but if we control it then how can we call it sub-conscious....... maybe its just a way of saying that someone else inside of us is making all the decisions for us..... or its just a part of the body that does the thinking part and the bones and muscles etc are the acting parts..... see where i'm going with this, is anyone with me?

One way to think about determinism: You may choose what you will, but you cannot change your will itself, because you cannot control the type of brain wiring, genetics, and environment you have. If you have free will, go choose to change your sexual orientation, go choose to like a food you dislike, and go choose to punch an innocent old woman on the street. We cant say if we had free will we can get a new car because we cant be certain a car would be a vehicle with free choice. Maybe we find another way to transport individually instead of coming to a general census of what vehicle we will use or if we would even use vehicles or travel. There are too many pre planned choices let alone the parenting hamster wheel of trusting your child to the modern age so many parents give their children little to no knowledge about the world and then shower them with gifts even when they dont deserve any, then the children grow up and the family is divided. And you are correct, there are good morals and lessons to find wisdom in. But the world is against natural goodness. People are fighting against it but people are also giving into it. I have been thinking about this as well for years now! I actually had an argument about this with my friend the other day,
and I told him that Free will is an Illusion. Just like how a number generator thinks of numbers, which is called a 'Pseudorandom number generator."
I had one question for my friend, to prove that free will is just an illusion, I asked him, "let's say a man born in a tribe then was taught that killing another human is good and feeds his god,
and to lose fate in this belief would cause death for him and amongst his family. So then, after years of fate, he stumbles upon another human. Will he kill the man or not?"
Do you see where I'm going with this, right? Another study showed that a pianist's brain will play the sequence of movements of the fingers to play the piano.
Before, the Pianist even has the will to play the piano. But then still, my friend refuses to agree with me, so I represented him with another question "if I stab you with a burning knife, would you scream?" He laughed then said, "of course, because it would hurt" Then I asked him, "was it you decided that it hurt? but it was your nerves that sent the signals to your spine, then your brain telling you that it hurt and return you start screaming subconsciously." so please tell explain to me why is "free will" not an illusion. At that point, he had nothing else to say.

@@pickelsandradishihatemylif6425 my point of saying "if I stab you with a burning knife, would you scream?" and obviously the answer would be yes.
      But we have to see why we screamed in the first place. Just like when a doctor bonks your knee joint/funny bone, it causes you to tick;
signals get sent to your brain, then correspondingly, it will react to what it's presented. So if you give your brain pain, it will cause a human to react indecisively with pain.
you may ask me, "what's the point of this?" Can you tell me what the definition of free will is? here I'll give it to you
      free will
      /ˌfrē ˈwil/
"Free will, in humans, the power or capacity to choose among alternatives or to act in certain situations independently of natural, social, or divine restraints."
"the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion."
      you said
"decision, according to certain circumstances, you come into a conclusion that you think is best for you, on a minimal or a huge scale."
Knowing that everything in this universe is predetermined isn't much like free will's definition, isn't it?

As someone who has studied neuropsychological here are my thoughts on the subject. Thoughts are not always a choice. All animals have chemicals that create automatic response to stimulus like “fight or flight” however are choice after those stimulus or maybe even before are our own. Example being that the doctor with the tumor who started having thoughts of pedophilia, he may not have been able to control the thought of hurting a child but he had the choice to act on those thoughts. He could of had the thought and immediately sought help, told a therapist particularly someone with a medical background should of know that something wasn’t right. I have ADHD and can be prone to thoughts of violence as a result of emotional stimulus I may not always be able to control the thought of punching the kid whose kicking my seat on the plane however I am in control of what I do with those thoughts. I may have to meditate before I get in a situation that will anger me of course I may have to walk away. Everyone is capable of neuro plasticity we can change our automatic response to things with time and practice and unfortunately accountability. If their is no accountability their is no reinforcement to change if we just succumb to the idea that we as people are just are genetics we would of never evolved to what we are now and what we can be.
An it really undermines people who have gotten better from treatment despite background and history. Is it much hard for some then others absolutely.. is it impossible for anyone no.

Nice to find a video that talks about this in more detail "- You are so strong minded cause you choose to workout so frequently - I'm not really choosing to, I'm just doing what my genes were programmed to do" and also it's easier to feel for people that can't seem to start making the decisions to lose weight for example, it simply might not be in their toolbox to do so. The same way an addict might need to be forced into rehab since "free will" wont allow the person to stop otherwise. It's more like our consciousness let us experience life but not control it.

Simply never forget that those explanations are models born from the natural world, and therefor can never fully understand it. If you think differently you're fundamentally mistaken about what science is.
Therefor if you experience free will (and every healthy human does, and understand that you should believe free will, then no logical human could ever use science to argue against the existence of it.
If it helps Our best science observes an acceleration of the expansion of the universe, but is fundamentally unable of explain that. Unexplained phenomena in science are the rule, not the exception.
Science can only disproof free will if you use your free will to choose to do so. As a far wiser and healthier choice, you also have the freedom to treat free will as yet another unexplained phenomena.

Based on Carl Jung’s concept of the self, we could instead think of it like we are a combination of our conscious brain (the 5% of the brain that interacts directly with the environment, otherwise known as the ego) and the subconscious or “shadow”, the other 95% of our brain that is less knowable but still interacts with the ego. Our “self” is not just our conscious brain, but is instead all the many parts of the brain that govern our thoughts, feelings and actions. So free will may be a myth, but will is not.

I don’t agree with determinism since it is possible for events to have been different, for example quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics scared many physicists because it meant that the universe didn’t run like clockwork and that they could never predict the future with complete accuracy. With that in mind I still don’t believe we have free will since what we call “I” is ultimately not in control of its decisions, it doesn’t matter if quantum mechanics is random it still doesn’t mean we have the ability to choose our decisions it was still determined by forces outside our control. Many physicists are trying to show that quantum events occur in the brain, as if that proves free will. Even if the processes in our brain were random it would just mean that they are random not that we are free or in control. Although it has also been argued that our sense of self is another illusion and therefore the very idea of free will is impossible.
Also great video, another mind bending philosophy is philosophical skepticism in the vein of the Phyrronians, Descartes, and Hume.

    • @Luukolas
      @Luukolas 3 года назад +2

@@diegoweidemann I'm not sure if Im fully able to explain what he means but I'll do my best.
One of the ways to rule out free will is to prove that everything that happens is directly influenced by everything that caused it and that it couldn't have gone any other way, this means that if you were able to pause the universe and measure everything about everything, you'd be able to predict with 100% accuracy how the universe would look in 1year, or 10years or pretty much as long as you'd want.
In order for this to be true, we would have to live in a world without true randomness, events that cannot be predicted. Quantum mechanics, however, introduce probability into the core of physics and allows for true randomness to exist. This doesn't prove free will exist, only that, if the above explanation is correct, hard determinism doesnt exists and free will could exist.
I'm not a physics expert though and I think I read something about how different interpretations of quantum mechanics react to determinism. If anyone can add anything please say because I'm also curious.

This is totally what I ended up thinking myself, and I've been talking about it with quite a lot of people and many of them found it believable but also very depressing. I'm always surprised, I don't see anything depressing in this, actually, it's quite the opposite.
Recently I've heard that has been well studied and formulated by the philosopher Spinoza.
I believe it uses to be a lot easier for humanity to comprehend this idea, because back in time humanity was less self-centered, less individualistic, and I think a couple thousand years ago it was culturally more accepted before god became unique and omnipotent.
Our place in the universe was a lot more humble and our acts were more often considered as the manifestation of the "gods" will.
But they weren't perfect either, they could be tricked and make mistakes, they were different to one another and had disagreements.
It seems like reality cannot be broken down to simple concepts such as "good and bad", "black and white" but instead that there is an infinity of shades in between and that most of the consequences extend way further than our consciousness could, such as a butterfly effect.
So much than judging an act as good or bad entirely depend on the timeframe you are looking at.
Some choices that are good for your day may destroy the rest of your life or make it worst for the whole of humanity, and some terrible things could generate an incredibly positive effect for generations to come.
What I think is reassuring in all this is to give up on trying to control everything. The only thing we can do, would be to be the person we are supposed to be, and without knowing it we cannot be wrong. To just try to follow what seems good through our current prism, and don't worry if things seem to go off, because then it was supposed to and you did your best. Actually what more could you have done if you have no control? You were supposed to experience this failure to be able to learn and therefore, become the one that will not do it next time...
So in this sense, there is no destination really, there is also no failure, everything is in an eternal journey and we are always on the path 🙏

@@geofftoscano6804 It's not proven, but it's also not disproven. Free will is so vaguely defined. You know what's also not proven? Determinism, when it comes to our reality. Physics and math are the most deterministic sciences, yet quantum mechanics is indeterministic. When it comes to everything, it's far more vague because physics has a far more narrow scope using the language of logic to look at certain things. Chaos theory even says that the future events cannot be predicted which means that outside of math, it's up to you. You can believe in free will, you can believe in determinism or accept the uncertainty, that we don't know if either of them apply.

@@vampirgirl41 I’m sorry, but quantum randomness doesn’t get you to free will, it simply introduces another factor. Assuming that there is genuine randomness to the quantum world, then there is still no place for free will, as we are still driven by our neurons. It’s not a matter of proven or unproven: it’s how you define free will. Libertarian free will, in the sense that we could not have acted otherwise, isn’t really challengeable.

Well, I think life and determinism is more like river flow. We cannot make it sharp turn or move backwards. But we can make small changes, we have influence, but big changes are a product from these small deviations from the main current that we can make.
    Just a thought. Take care.

Thank you for your food for thought, might I add: if moving time were the water flowing in a river, then a static description of time would be comparable to the rocky banks that determine the river's course, or flow of direction.(Consciousness) Although time is usually seen as a oneway street, it need not be, the fact that a street is marked "one way" does not stop it from being easily traveled in the unauthorized direction, thus, the subjective, and objective sides of reality, or the self, and the environment tend to merge in a symmetric way. On one hand, the environment is absorbed by the self through sensations or experience, and the laws of nature are thus abstracted by thoughts and feelings; on the other hand, the self is projected onto the environment in such a way that it "selects" the laws of nature by analogy or logical comparison to its own internal laws. What projects reflects only a fraction of what is. Either way, the ego tends to interact with the environment as momentary identities are intersected within it. This brings the subjective and objective phases of reality and spacetime into closer CORRESPONDENCE, as the brain’s neural connections are modified or adjusted to account for new information regarding both self and environment - as it learns or teaches - its model of time changes as a function of time, the relationship with self, and environment serving as the matrix for all spacetime relationships, and an accumulation of experiences (perception) that forms one's understanding of reality.

Christians can totally agree with some major points in this. This idea of freedom being affected by your surroundings is 100% true.
We believe that the more you give in to your desires that are not good for you, for example alcohol, gambling, cheating etc, you can lose some freedom to make good decisions in the future. Basically the whole point of life is to reach heaven, which is perfect freedom, aided by God, to choose the good things like charity and service when you want to. But when we mess up we lose the freedom we need to make good decisions little by little.
Look at the best saints, like Mother Theresa for example, they were the most disciplined and actually wanted to help people out of free compassion. Anyways, I want to get that out there for anyone thinking any of this video is a totally defeating challenge to Christianity, it isn’t.

This ignores certain aspects of quantum theory, specifically collapse of wave function and particle superposition. All matter is bound by these rules, yet they are impossible for our brains to fully comprehend. Free will does exist. I used to think like this video, atoms are chemically and physically bound by a certain set of governing laws that dictate what will happen as time moves on; and in the physical world we see this is correct. However, the quantum world literally seems magical, and anyone saying they understand it truly has no idea.

At the most fundamental, atomic level, we are simply the sum of the molecular composition of our bodies and the way these molecules interact with the environment. Since we lack the ability to perfectly describe and predict the behaviour of these molecules, we have to invoke philosophical concepts like free will and morality for practical purposes, not because free will and morality are fundamental features of the universe.
