Just discovered you. This was fantastic - helped clear up my work off the lead sheet, and got me in a different position an octave lower quickly. Great concise explanations too.
This is a really well done lesson, thank you. Also, I can really hear Charlie’s influence on the phrasing of Jimmie Rivers, his version of Back Bay Shuffle and Slow Boat to China
I know Charlie Parker plays this up tempo, but I think it sounds great slower. There is a great version by Art Pepper. Thanks for the lesson, although it is way beyond my playing level there is still a lot I can take from it.
Thanks Micah, really glad you enjoyed the lesson. I haven't done a full lesson on Donna Lee yet, but I do have a video of my arrangement here; ruclips.net/video/dXSu6ndeJA4/видео.htmlsi=nft35z0aC4AR5yxo
Very nice work! I've always found the melody a little idiosyncratic when applied to the guitar; this rendition works very well. The visual presentation is appealing also. I was wondering if you would share information about the model/era of the guitar. The bout doesn't appear (?) to be as wide as an L-5, however the top is more figured than I've seen in smaller vintage Gibson L-series archtops - I haven't seen tops like the on the early ES guitars either. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the comment buddy, I appreciate that. I always include a bit of “gear talk” near the end of my videos so do check that out. But, to summarise, it’s a 1953 Gibson es125 👍🏻
@@AlexFarranGuitar Thanks! - and that saves me from having to ask about your other guitars! I'm a working musician, and I like to check on youtube when I', looking for a little perspective if what I'm working on isn't jiving. I feel like I've fallen upon a little gem with your channel. Terrific stuff!
this is an amazing lesson. The lydian dominant sonority is best over non resolving dominant 7 chords right? Regarding the gear: I put TI bebop rounds gauge 12 on my 125, they sound great; but maybe slightly thinner at the top than flats. Other than the cutaway are there differences in sound between your 175 and 125? Cheers
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! 🙏🏻 Yes that’s how I see it too.. works best on non resolving dominants 👌🏻 Interesting re: strings. After many years of experimentation, I much prefer pure nickel, round wound strings on my es125. I feel like the flats will serve the 175 much better. The 2 guitars are surprisingly vastly different both in tone and feel. The 125 has a much darker, woodier and “thuddier” natural tone with more lower midrange punch. The 175 sounds a lot more open and hi-fi in comparison.. livelier top end, but less low end punch.
Good, concise but thorough. Much appreciated lesson. It will keep me busy for a while.
Really glad you enjoyed it my friend! 🙏🏻

Thank you Steve! Oh absolutely.. I agree. Funnily enough I just filmed a lesson on Jimmie’s version of “slow boat to china”!
Very gifted player !
Thanks mate!
Great post Alex! Thanks!
My pleasure buddy!
Another great lesson. Thanks, Alex.
Thanks buddy! 🙏🏻
Love that cool old Gibson!! Jim C.
Thanks Jim, I do too 🧡

Thanks Peter! Absolutely, Melodie’s this strong sound good at any tempo! I dig the Art Pepper version too, really cool 👌🏻
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Alex ❤😊
Thank you my friend, you too! 🙏🏻
Really enjoyed that! Nice pace, cool and clear. Do you do a Donna Lee lesson?
Lovely gear, too. Great tone!
Best

Brilliant! Sounds a bit like the lost Jimmie Rivers version! (There is none!)
Hehe thanks Roger! 😂🍻
Hey man check out a tune called "Sno Peas" on Bill Evans' Affinity cd. I suspect you'd like it if you haven't heard.
I'm a big Bill Evans fan, a do know that tune, but I appreciate the comment my friend :)
❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏🏻
