how can one guy have so much talent? Been viewing guitar players for years on RUclips, but I've learned so much from you in so brief a time, amazing, you are an incredible musician!
Very cool licks! Altered licks can also be used on any dominant 7 chord in jazz... it doesn't have to be an altered chord. The dominant chords are flexible that way, but the rhythm players have to only be playing a dominant 7 chord to give the soloist that kind of flexibility. If the rhythm player is playing a dominant 9 chord, dominant 11 chord or dominant 13 chord (with a natural 9, or natural 11, and/or natural 13) then the altered scale will not work with that kind of dominant chord. Sometimes an inexperienced rhythm player will add those natural extensions to a dominant chord and you will quickly realize it when your altered licks don't match up with the rhythm player (that can be a teachable moment for that rhythm player). Sometimes compositions are purposely written with dominant 9, 11, or 13 chords because the composer intends that sound.
Thanks a lot for this Andy. I think in the notes shown at 3:15 the 4th note in the sequence, should be notated as Eb instead of E. Oh, and the last but one is also Eb instead of E. Probably just because we can't quite see the key signature so the accidentals would help.
This is so great! Because I was looking for a video to show me ideas to solo over What you won’t do for Love by Bobby Caldwell and this is the exact progression except in that song he adds the C7 or C13 as the last measure in the progression. Thanks for this!
For the second lick I think there's a little mistake on the tab : it should be F# instead of G (4th fret instead of 5th). Your phrasing and ideas are great, thx for the lesson !
You’re saying the key here is Gminor but can you also says it’s in the key of Bb? And can I use the diminished scale over this progression? If so where does it start?
Yes, you can look at it in Bb but the resolution is Gm (so I prefer to see it in Gm). For the Dominant Diminished Scale, use the half-whole on the D7 chord.
The scale is helpful, but it's really all about great phrasing.
Yes, I agree
great jazz teacher, perfectly explained

Thank you for the kind comment! I am happy you are enjoying the content
Thank you for explaining the context of these licks in detail. Super helpful
Glad that you enjoyed the video!
The phrasing is so cool on that second run, some of the other improv ideas sound as good as the featured lines, themselves.

Ah yes - these are in the key signature (Gm - which is not visible). I'll look out for this moving forward. Thanks

Hi Jason - you, you got it. These lines would work perfectly in that tune.
Thanks for another great lesson
Great sound!
Andy, these are really really reall good. My only complaint is that you don't tab the whole solos. Do you do that on your smooth jazz packet?
Hi - the full transcription is available on my website if you wish to have it. Thanks
brilliant Andy
thankyou!
Excelente, muy buena lección. Muchas gracias maestro.
would be interesting to link EflatMaj7 andEflat melodic minor - they have only one note difference! could be a good phrase!
Love this❤🙏
Nice!
I Love the altered scale. How can I get that backing track? Cool
Hello - the backing track is here: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/0t2w78...

Nice lesson, very complex! You are a good teacher! Thank you.
Awesome!! What do you use to create your backing tracks?
Great 👌
Bro what would the D7#9 reversed be because I did that and it sounds totally cool!
Brillian playing and very good explanations. Thanks

You are correct - I have fixed the pdf. Thanks for letting me know!
Great video and sound! May I please ask what effects / interface you are using? Thanks
Hi David - I use the Line 6 Helix for my videos. Effects are reverb, stereo delay, and a bit of compression. Thanks
@@AndyDacoulis Thanks so much for your reply Andy. Beautiful clean sound. So just the Helix no interface?

Hi Andy what is it for wunderful guitar?
Hi - it's a D'Angelico Excel SS
👍🎸🪕🎻🌟🎺🎷💥🌿
What does altered mean… excuse my inexperience :)
That's a good question - it means the 5th and/or the 9th of a chord are altered: #5, b5, #9, or b9.
