Quark: I want you to try something for me. Take a sip of this.
Elim Garak: What is it?
Quark: A human drink. It's called root beer.
Elim Garak: [unwilling] Uh, I don't know...
Quark: Come on, aren't you just a little bit curious?
[Garak sighs, takes a sip and gags]
Quark: What do you think?
Elim Garak: It's *vile*!
Quark: I know. It's so bubbly, and cloying, and *happy*.
Elim Garak: Just like the Federation.
Quark: But you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you begin to *like* it.
Elim Garak: It's insidious!
Quark: *Just* like the Federation.
"Thank you"
The moment when someone finally told the unvarnished truth to a culture that values truth (and empathy) very highly.
"Zaldans are infuriated by courtesy - they view it as a form of phony social behavior designed to cover true feelings." - Wesley Crusher, TNG "Coming of Age"
Anson Mount's Pike has very quickly risen through the ranks of my favorite Captains in Star Trek.
They valued honesty above all else and they immediately joined the Federation.
It was a beautiful moment
I don’t think it was honesty that they valued the most I think it was empathy the ability to see the discussion from their point of view and to articulate it
It's not that he told the truth about the federation. It's that he understood their point of view. How joining the federation could effect them.
*affect them
Yes, their culture respects the consideration of others.
@@RichO1701estop being a loser and correcting Grammer on the internet.
@TheWinkingSkeever If it's not smart to get it right then what does that say about getting it wrong?
Yes, he is in this particular case. If I am wrong about a fact, I would appreciate a correction, so I don't continue to make the same mistake.
When did we become so offended if we are corrected? People make mistakes, it happens.
It was also mentioned their species reflects everything they're given.
The Klingons were confrontational, so they were confrontational.
The Tellerites were generous with their insults, so they threw some back.
What they were really feeling was apprehension, anxiety, fear of the future/unknown. When Pike did the same, they felt seen and validated, because if one person could share their perspective, others could too.
That the most direct and honest "Thank You" I've ever heard
I'd rather deal with someone who is completely upfront with me than someone who sugarcoats everything...even if I don't agree with the former all the time.
Right?! Shame honesty is so rare nowadays and people just accept the lies they know they are.
A trustworthy "No-man" is much more valuable than a "Yes-man".
I hate those type of people.
His honesty is arguably by far the best tactic for the federation as well. A new member who understood what they were getting into and chose it anyway is likely to be far more supportive of the collective good than a member who was signed up under false pretence and then resents the demands made of them and the problems it brings them.
@@mattc3581 that’s seems to have been how the federation operated; mostly.
This was my favorite episode of season 1 because of this speech. It is the most classic Star Trek Answer to a Star Trek Problem I've seen in nearly 30 years.
The way he said _who knows what species we would piss off next_ with that very knowing, very experienced smirk 👌
Do I remember correctly that they joined, appreciating the sobriety and honesty of his response?
They did indeed!
I love this show. Anson Mount is a class act.
This is the Captain Pike the original series hinted at, the one that turned the Enterprise over to Kirk.
Really? how so?
Having seen the original series this character seems completed different from the pike we're given and more like STII and beyond Kirk.
That species is very empathic. They just wanted someone to see it from their point of view. Once Pike picked up on that, and switched his tactics, they instantly got up, and joined the Federation
Directness and honesty, always a good diplomatic tactic.
Something seriously lacking in the political landscape today!
He didn’t just impress them with his honesty, it’s that he shows foresight and critical thinking. He shows that they think of things from different perspectives and weighs positives and negatives. He represents the thoughts of the many and he understands the risks that others take.
This is the people who mirror their negotiators right? They mimic the other party's tendencies. Theyre aggressive with Klingons, logical with Vulcans, because they want to understand the people theyre negotiating with
So Pike gives them what they want, an assessment that fits their point of view. They wanted understanding, and pike showed he understands them
This was the episode that made me so happy because after many years, we were getting a real Star Trek show again. Roddenberry's vision was on the air again and I'm loving every second of it.
Couldn’t agree more - SNW had a fantastic first season
This scene made me feel like somebody woke up the writers and they figured out how to do their jobs. It feels like real Trek here.
What a great episode. Captain Pike shows that he can empathize and see their point of view. Which is something that species highly values and why no one else has been able understand and succeed in negotiations with them.
It’s not only the honesty, it’s that he had the admiration and respect for them to be honest with them. Something that most everyday people can’t do.
This was intentional... They wanted the truth, he gave it...they accepted and became part of the federation.
Dropping all veils and laying out everything good and bad is a great tactic to build trust and show that you're genuine in your dealings
I dont know much about star trek and I never got into it. But this is beautifully done. You can see the look of "well here goes"in pikes expression after he says "easy, you shouldn't" You can see the shock on the other fedaration officers but when it cuts to the other party's leader, the expressoin on his face is of shock, awe, with a mix of respect to pikes words. Whoever these actors are, absolutely nailed there roles.
This is why I like lower budget shows cuz the actors tend to be lesser known (sometimes) and often put more into their roles… especially if it’s a know franchise.
@@aaronmathewson5522 That's a very good point. Fresh meat has more to gain by putting in more effort.
This is the Star Trek we’ve been waiting decades for.
Why? We have TNG and Voyager.
@@RichardLeslieWhereat those both ended decades ago lol.
@@RichardLeslieWhereat now we have std's Picard and snw, over all them I'd go with SNW since it aligns more with original star trek.
They have really fleshed out Captain Pike in this series.
Not to mention the absolutely spot on casting.
Bet he ment to say, Thank you for not treating me like a Idiot...
Pike is SO well written. He is definitely the kind of captain the Federation needs
And the federation didnt need kirk?
@@RobertWilkinsonJKekMaloy why not both? Federation certainly has more than a single ship.
And you need both kinds of captains.
@@RobertWilkinsonJKekMaloy Kirk was even more honest and direct ... who do you think inspired him?
They were both cut from the same cloth, so to speak.
The kind the Federation needs, but “CBS” didn’t want.
And so well played by Anson Mount. They hit the jackpot with him.
It's moments like this that give me that original feel
Don't throw down with Pike, man will tell you who you are, who he is and what he will do to you...and you will agree with him.
I always thought Picard would always be my fave captain, but Pike is pretty damn great!!!
I sure hope this series last for many years. Finally, a real tribute to STO and STNG. Po!
I've been a ST fan since my younger days and I have to say Mount is my favorite captain.
Anson Mount was the perfect choice to play Captain Pike
The only bad thing about this show was the lack of episodes!
We NEED 24-26 PER SEASON!!
I am so happy I met Anson a couple months ago.
Need is such a strong word. You do realize you're not going to get 25 episodes per season, right?
These hacks couldn’t write more 15 episodes let alone 26.
Yep
Haven't seen that since the late Nineties
Pike isnt the best captain Starfleet has. Hes the very synthesis of its ideals. Respect for other cultures, self sacrifice in the face of almost unimaginable hardship, and a fundamental kindness and warmth borne from the joy he shares during his journey. ❤
Honesty is the currency of loyalty. I'd never trust a potential ally if something was left in the dark. But someone on the more powerfull side willing to come over to my side for a honest view from where I am standing and who still offers me the whole wholesome truth and respect.
I will stand by them. No doubt about it.
Reminds me of a line from a Nicolas Cage movie. I forget the name of it, but he worked at a small family run business and they were trying to get a contract with a trucking company. When the owner of the company asked Cage why they should made a deal with them, he said basically the same thing.
Family man
Put the bunny, back, in, the, box!
The family man
@@skidivr kind a reverse “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Ahh, I love daddy Pike. Anson Mount was amazing, and I can't wait to see more.
Season two of Strange New Worlds can’t come quickly enough!
People dont get that he showed understanding in their views and showed honesty in their distrust. He secured a future ally and a mutual friend today. That's what he just did.
Of all the scenes in this show, this one is the most "Star Trek" of them all.
I love it!
after Pike's first sentence, the Admiral nearly shat his pants and totally lost it!
EXPRESSING THE FEARS OF THE OTHER! THAT is what this whole *Rongovian argument thing is all about. It shows a genuine, credible, thorough understanding of the others' doubts
Dang that ain't bad 🖖
Indeed
This Christopher Pike is a superb captain. All in or all out. No wishy washy in between.
I'd rather throw in with someone who tells me they're not perfect than someone who tells me they'll make all my dreams come true
Radical empathy! It's a refreshing concept.
Anson Mount was instantly one of the best Star Fleet captains. He fits perfectly into the Star Trek universe
We can only hope for a society with such honesty
Half the people here hating the clip and the other half compliment it.
I like it, personally.
Basically, the federation offers brotherhood
Some of the best dialog he's had, and he's had some real good stuff.
This is actually a really good show... hope they do more than just one season
It's a great show but I can't stop staring at his hair
I think it was designed to look like the paramount logo lol
One of the best scenes in the entire series.
In the franchise.
There are monsters in the fog. If they join with the adventurer's party, they most certainly will be hunted, but if they don't they'll have no help when the monsters find them anyway. It's not a good deal. It's a deal worth considering.
Another Great scene by great actors, and that's what makes ST Great, Honor to the memories of the old who gave us the new!😊😊😊
"Who knows what species we'll piss off next." I love Pike.
That's one of the most real statements you could ever hear in a negotiations table you could hear.
Pike is rapidly becoming my favourite captain.
Very good writing and acting. Every syllable is essential, nuanced, and delivered with smooth precision.
From what I remember, this culture perceives or communicates through ultimate empathy.
Sometimes honesty is just as important as diplomacy. Not usually, but there are occasional times when the truth actually is powerful. It's a rare person who can handle the truth.
It’s not that he was “telling the truth” but he was showing respect for their culture by matching their skepticism in this meeting. They had matched the mood and interests of other star fleet officers in other meetings, and everything seemed to be going well, until this scene. Pike realized it was a cultural thing with them, to match the vibe of the other, and showed them that he respected their culture by being harsh and critical of the federation. They ended up joining.
Did he take the deal?
No greater respect shown than telling the truth, no matter how hurtful.
Ouch, this looks like they took the idea straight from the Orville. Kind of crazy to see a parody show end up being used in the actual show. Then again the Orville may have started out as a parody but it really did end up being better than most of Star Trek.
I wish more job interviews were like this.
I’m annoyed seeing so many comments about how it’s bad that Chris seemed to be trying to discourage them from joining, if you actually watched the episode you’d realize they wanted them join the federation, but were failing to convince them until Chris realized how to properly convince them by understanding their culture. Right after this seen, the ambassadors return to their ship and immediately hoist a federation flag showing that they decided to join up.
Any captain in any culture who did this would be stripped of ranked and branded a traitor for the rest of his life.
This was a good scene and perfectly highlights the price of any membership.
Reverse psychology 101. Awesome scene. Honesty in a neutral way. Stating pros and cons from the point of view to whom one is trying to convince. Ive watched this so many times! Love it
That "Thank you" was a sincere acknowledgment that could be a great foundation for future relations between two Sovereign peoples.
Anson Mount was wasted as Black Bolt. His delivery and characterization and sheer charisma as Pike has me excited for the new season.
He is by far one of my favorite Captains.
A species holding the utmost respect for Honesty, even when it's a brutal or unflattering Honesty.
I love the way they sat forward like "wait wtf why is this guy being honest?"
You know who else I could've seen doing that? Janeway.
Because it felt so *against the grain* of what would've been expected, but worked because it was clever.
Honorable mention to Sisko, who essentially *did* do the same thing, to protect the Bajorans from the Dominion.
It Is Called HONESTY.....The Highest Form Of Respect...
This actually looks good I need to get around to watching this
It been my favorite of the new shows by far. They’re actually doing episodic shows again. It feels like old school Trek, only contemporary. Its way worth it.
Yes. YES YOU DO.
This reminds me of the scene in Star Trek Lower Decks where Captain Freeman got the Ferengi to join the Federation by doing a similar thing: understanding the culture and values of the other civilization and expressing that.
She was partnered up with a higher ranking (or maybe just more experienced, it's been a while since I saw the episode) captain (or maybe he was a higher rank, I forget) to try to get the Ferengi to join. He kept making concessions, giving the Ferengi more and more. Captain Freeman, however, in order to avoid giving away everything, added a bunch of gold-pressed latinum to that ridiculous deal, and had them sign. The only other added point was that the Ferengi had to first get another planet to join the Federation. She just didn't say which. Small print, they had to bring in the Klingon home world. Small print leads to big consequences. They, understanding that people in Starfleet could swindle like a true Ferengi, joined with the regular forms.
Why is it always so dark? Why does no one turn on the lights?
And this is why Pike is my absolute favorite captain.
Or, how to get fired from the state department in one easy step…
True!
I love that he admits that if the federation offered humanitarian aid to some sort of crisis that the federation itself could easily be the cause of said crisis
I can tell he appreciated that honest no bs assessment
*loud deaf guy in saving private Ryan* - “your welcome!!”
radical empathy, we should use it more often
This so reminded me of both classic Trek and TNG. It's diplomacy, Jim, but not as we expect it 😉
It's a great dialog.
Sign this man up to run for US President. We need this.
It's was that honesty that brought them in
Sometimes you just have to say how it is... then trust that your sincerity is recognized and appreciated... there is a huge lesson here for a PARENT.
The thing is that sometimes it's after your kids have become adults that a parent realizes this.
Best Star Trek since the the ending of Voyager.
Great character design, and the costumes are on point as well. 10/10
Such wonderful subtle acting. In the beginning, when he sits down he's exuding an air of someone about to knowingly listen to BS. Slightly exasperated, a bit aloof, more than a little bit bored with the political games. Yet at the end he stands up slowly and stiffly, almost with shock. In such a small interaction with just two lines, you can almost read through his character and body language how many of these political talks he's had to sit through, and how much bs he's had to wade through. And in the end, although subtly, he makes it very apparent that he's not used to brutal honesty partnered with empathetic consideration for his peoples position. He said "thank you" with the same frustration/relief as somebody saying "finally somebody gets it".
Simply put, how can you not love this new series, strange new worlds? Can't get enough! Can't wait for season 2. I am sold.
It’s awesome! As a fan of old trek, SNW punches it out of the park! All the cast are brilliant and the writing is top notch.
Honesty is always the best choice
In this case, it's not necessarily that Pike fully believes all this, it's more that Pike is expressing the feelings that he figures they already have--as they have been doing for various interviewers throughout the episode. And it's that empathy that they respond to.
All three plot threads of this episode--this thread, the "Freaky Friday" one, and the "Enterprise Bingo" story--have the theme of seeing the world from someone else's point of view.
That shows respect for their point of view.
