Yes, he is the greatest Death. I always thought it was a bit hokey that he's so old old old, but then he's succeeded 2-3 times in just a few years? And the first actor looked so skeletal, he was perfect!

I'm sort of stuck in the middle with this one... I've watched Supernatural since it's very first episode and then rewatched it after it hit streaming sites. I have to admit that out of all the characters, Death portrayed by Julian is a masterpiece. However, this Death sort of had what you could maybe consider a "soft spot" for the boys. I mean, Death has always stated "the natural order of things" to even saying that he'd also end up reaping God. So, for him to help or lead the boys in a direction that could help them(every time they called mind you) was pretty much against what he originally said. Billie on the other hand, isn't like that. She literally says "no more bargains with Death"

Death's first on-screen intro was a masterclass in how to introduce a powerful unaligned character. His slow walk through that street in Chicago followed by the way he dealt with the idiot absorbed in his phone was chilling. Julian Richings seems to have a talent for quiet menace, similar to how Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman played their respective roles in Harry Potter.

Yeah. Billie isn't as good but I'm okay with it. It makes sense. Dean killed death. So the next reaper that dies becomes death. How many reapers die? I mean, outside of the winchesters(cass) and rowena who can kill a reaper? I guess angels but they wouldn't. Only Castiel would.
I see the OG death and Billie as death aspects. yes one had to die forthe other to take over, but the OG seemed to be uninterested in helping humans, despite knowing the grand scheme of things (As Billie put it). I think this is why Billie is around right now, She's worked the streets (as a reaper) and has an understanding, of how things work with humans. She also has the proper attitude, for dealing with the issue at hand. Try as i can, I just can't see the OG death in the current arc. This arc feels more like a thing, for someone more proactive. The OG death seems to like to sit and watch, than actually do anything. Personally i like both, the old death fit in the arcs he appeared in, Billie fits in the arcs she appeared in
Death can kill without touching them. Look at what he did in the diner. The waitress brought his order, then everyone literally dropped dead a second later. That's beyond scary.

This Death was refined, classy, proper. He didn't demand respect, he commanded it. Billie was just a punk on a power trip with an inflated sense of self-importance.

i love how subtle his performance is. he does not yell or heavily emote. he just is. he has no need to lie, speaks quite directly, and gives as much respect as he gets. even when sam and dean irritate him he barely shows it and the little he does show is enough to make them practically piss themselves. his whole performance is so good. i sometimes wonder if he didn't actually die and was the empty entity the whole time. after dean "killed" him, death decided he was over their shit. obviously not seeing how the last season played out but it was a cool theory i had for a while.

Has to be my favourite character in Supernatural for that reason, although we didn't see enough of it...played a neutral part in the series and that's the whole point - everybody dies, no exception.
He exuaded more power and fear than chuck himself. Loved this actor. Supernatural squandered away two great characters by killing them off, one is the original death and the other is Crowley. Loved any episodes which had either of them.
Basically. Last few seasons feel like they drag on and on, they're still decent but nothing beats the memorable Crowley and the intimidating Death himself.
I've always liked that part. Dean does his usual backtalk, but realizes who he's doing it to when Death just goes quiet before saying, "Most people speak to me with more respect."
Had a DnD character who spoke to gods with 0 reverence. He openly acknowledged their power. But spoke to them like people who are accountable for their own BS. Suffice to say a lot of gods were none to fond of him, save one. Who he became a champion for because that god found it absolutely hilarious that a mortal was telling gods they need to get their shit together. Suffice to say, Dean talking to death, while being respectful, and also bribing him with something he likes as if he was just a person who had something Dean wanted and he was trying to get in the good graces of, might be why Death was so tolerant of him. Dean treated him differently than others do. Death respected that, even if it annoyed him a little.
I don’t really see it that way. Dean wasn’t back talking Death, he was pointing out that he was meant to fail and Death knew it. Dean was making a solid point, Death respected him for that. Most people fear Death and never want to face him. Dean being willing to stand up to him is probably seen as being cute to Death. Like a cute little puppy dog barking at a dragon eating queso and chips.
Death was such a badass character, literally everybody feared/respected him on some level. I can just imagine Death casually strolling through the gates of hell and fetching Sam's soul without anybody intervening, because honestly who would want to stand in his way when he wants to do something.
My favorite part of OG death was you got the impression that he was fond of the brothers while at the same time having zero issue swatting them like a fly. Billie is generally annoyed with them, but doesn't manage to convey the sense of menace and immeasurable power.
It's that sort of aloof, distant, unknowable mindset I think that as much conveys his power as anything else. Billie is more actively malicious and remains that way upon her ascension to Death and I think that hurts the aura that'd been established.
Having death love food is such a neat little detail, and it also works well with the acting cause the dude playing death is so unflappable having him eat in all his scenes just makes him more intimidating, like sure important stuff is going down it won’t interrupt my snacks
5. I love how Dean is bribing Death with Food. 4. He is OLD but not heartless. 3. One of my favourite scenes. I would put it on number 2. One of the most funny scenes. 1. Most badass entry of a Character EVER! I wish they would bring him back!
Would Death have gone to the Empty? He appears to be one of the primordial beings along with Chuck, Amara, and the Shadow. We know archangels go to the Empty and they're made out of primordial stuff too, but they're secondary as they were created by Chuck.
Death has the looks, voice, demeanor, and the car. They literally picked the personification of death in this actor outside of him not actually being a bad person.
I was never a "Supernatural" fanboy, but I always loved the original Death character. Death followed the cosmic rules, and even enforced them when he had to. Death struck me as a moral character; he had a role to play, and a job to do, and he did it. Death respected God and his creation, and was annoyed with Lucifer and the others who played with the established order of the universe. He was annoyed with the Winchesters because he saw them as rule-breakers and threats to the natural order of things, but came to understand and respect that they had a role to play, too. There were times in the plot line when I tended to agree with Death more than hot-headed Dean. Death really was one of the best written characters in the series.
I've already watched this show from start to finish about 10 times and I think most others watching this video has too so it doesn't really matter... But that was the worst "spoiler warning" ever 🤣 Most people (like 90%) don't read every letter, they scim through the text and the brain fills in the blanks, this is not a technique or anything but what the brain does subconsciously once you're fluent in a language. This means that before most people has registered that it said spoiler warning, their brain has already computed about another sentence and a half.
The look on Death's face when he's handling Sam's soul....he looks like he's barely keeping from crying. "You poor thing," he seems to be thinking. "(The human soul) is more valuable than you can imagine." When he's putting Sam's soul back, you can tell he just wants to send it onward to its rest, rather than keep it on this Earth to experience even more pain, and more than likely go against his very precise instructions to not scratch at the wall. This was the moment when I truly came to respect, rather than just fear, Death as a character, and part of why I was so frothing mad when Sam and Dean killed him later on.
Even against "godstiel" Death is unmoved, more irritated at his inflated ego than anything. Even as powerful as Cass was at the time, Death wasn't impressed.
I actually used this version of Death in my dnd campaigns. At least, as well as I could portray him as an NPC. He's outstanding and scared the party shitless every time he showed up...which was more than once, which itself, explains the intelligence of the group
I got the steinheart's guide to the eldrics hunt by monkey dm. He has a stat block, and I use the picture to show a representation of what he may look like. But just an avatar since in my world, he personification of dying. And players can call on him by writing 4242564 (got that from soul eater the anime) in blood they get (kinda) what they want but have 2 permanent failed deaths, saving throws and disadvantage when they make them. And have the feature of "marked for death" from the seinharts book
lol theres always at least one guy who whenever declaring an action or idea hears from the dm either a heavy sigh or a "are you sure you want to do that?" (the answer to that question should almost always be "uhhh on second thought . . .no?"
I think Death's quirk of eating comfort, and junk food while hes on earth is just fantastic. Like if hes going to eat he wants flavor, and calories lol.
This version of Death, as opposed to many others - including Billy - who're way more antagonistic, was a breath of fresh air. You could still sense the power he possessed and his utterly eldritch nature (something none of the other Horsemen or forces, bar perhaps The Empty, in Supernatural exuded) yet there was no real sense of active malice from him, ever, as if it was beneath him and alien to him - he's just doing a job and that's all he wants to do.
Yeah, he is entertaining and fun - but I don't like him as Lucifer. Simply, does not fit the character. Lucifer is damn old, and the second most powerful being in the universe, second only to God. He accumulated eons of wisdom and experience, should know everything there is to know, especially when it comes to humans. And what do we get? The Devil who can't seem to understand the basic human interactions and concepts. Nothing to do with Tom Elis, he plays what they wrote, perfectly. But that's the thing - they didn't write the devil. You don't feel anything powerful, ancient. That's what Death has in this show and that is why we like him. He was written as someone as old as time (or at least as close as our imagination allows us) and the actor plays it. Lucifer, on the other hand, was written as a charismatic likeable jerk. You can remove the whole Devil part of the story and the series won't change much, not really. You could have the same show with all the supernatural characters being human. And that's a problem, when the main premise of the show is not crucial.

I met Julian Richings at a Play in Toronto, that was being headlined by Kim Coates. Happened to get seated next to him. Brilliant man, amazing actor, didn't mind me fan-ning out for a minute. Class act all around. Thank you Julian for everything you gave us in this show, and for being a super awesome dude to a fan for a few hours.
"Don't worry, not you" is probably my most favorite line in the entire series just because those 2 are sitting there and you have to be wondering what's really going thru their heads.
"At the end, I'll reap Him, too." "God? You'll reap God?" "Oh, yes. God will die, too, Dean." 10 seasons later, God is reduced to a mortal, cursed to live out a short life and then... die.
This character was built very well and his actor did such a phenomenal job embodying the roll, that every time I see him on the screen, I get a sense of how much importance his character is and how powerful he is just because Deans' whole demeanor changes....mad respect for this
One of the best characters in the series. The way they killed him was horrible. Almost as old as God, maybe even older. And all it took to kill him, was a human taking his gun and attacking him from behind, while he was talking to another human ...

Death comported himself as some who IS power; and yet, not arrogant, not boastful, proud or out for respect. You just KNEW that he is a power beyond understanding and that alone made the primal instincts in humans recognize that he is something beyond them.

Death is honestly the most coolest and most powerful character in the Supernatural universe. I love how he is, how chill he is, and on TOP OF THAT...loves food. Even if it is a simple burger, if it is the best burger then he will eat it.

That death character is one of the best characters tv has ever created. The look, the acting, perfect. And as much as I'd want to see more of him I think the scarcity of his appearances keeps the character special

This version of Death is the best, in my opinion. From his beginning to end, I just loved how they portrayed the Fourth Horsemen. The actor did such a great job. His entrance?! One of the BEST in TV history. I also loved he was always eating something. 😂
Just a theory, but death said that in the end, he will reap him too (he was talking about God) At the end of the 14th season, God said, welcome to the end. Imo I think they will bring back death and he will reap God... I actually really hope that happens...
It was my personal head canon that death just decided to take an extended vacation away from the winchesters after Dean ‘killed’ him. Such a truely menacing character. Billie was great but she didn’t seem nearly as intimidating. I really wished we could have seen him come back at the end of season 15 to reap god as he foretold.
This man for me personally is the embodiment of death.. Julian Richings put forth such a classy, confident, threatening but respectable form of death. Nothing beats that intro scene.. ever.

The pizza scene was literally my favorite Supernatural scene! The runup to this scene, the music, the car, everything was just perfect! And the Actor who plays the original Death?....Absolutely perfect!
"God will die too Dean" I'm keeping that line in mind for when SPN returns. it would be neat if the writers thought back to it and had Dean kill Chuck somehow.

I love the subtle choices the actor made to express that even Death, one of the 4 God level entities, has to exert himself, just a little bit, in order to re-ensoul Sam.
I'm so happy his entrance made #1 on the list. Out of all the shows that depict death as a character, out of all anime scenes where death has an epic, "all powerful" type entrance, out of all the lore and stories surrounding various cultures and religions, this simple, and rather elegant entrance is by far my favorite. The song perfectly completes the scene and I will never not have this image in my imagination when I think of the persona of death. Supernatural did an amazing job at casting the right person for the role, with mistakes few and far between in my opinion, but this definitely takes the gold in casting choices. I cannot praise that entrance scene highly enough.
I'm a little disappointed that Dean killed this version of Death. He literally calls on death to help him, agrees to Deaths offer, then at the end kills him in the end because Sam went all weepy on Dean. I mean, I get that the show was/is about them fighting a war with monsters/angels/demons/etc.. However, Death is something that was outside of that, well only until after they broke Lucifers bind to him.

In the war between good and evil. Death stands neutral on the side lines, to reap those that die, from either side. How ever, he did give a helping hand now and then when the natural order of things needed to be put back in order.

This show is just so damn good. the way death walks up on him while explaining the origins of the mark and how it came to Dean, the whole time closing the distance and making the most eerie eye contact. You can FEEL the tension, it's thicker than frozen peanut butter lol
While death was also well written in Supernatural, Julian Richings, the actor who played him, deserves so much recognition. He was perfect for the role. I'm not sure he'd appreciate being told that as it's not too flattering in most senses, but even his appearance helped the performance. Along with everything else he brought to the table.

i love how subtle his performance is. he does not yell or heavily emote. he just is. he has no need to lie, speaks quite directly, and gives as much respect as he gets. even when sam and dean irritate him he barely shows it and the little he does show is enough to make them practically piss themselves. his whole performance is so good.
i sometimes wonder if he didn't actually die and was the empty entity the whole time. after dean "killed" him, death decided he was over their shit. obviously not seeing how the last season played out but it was a cool theory i had for a while.

He exuaded more power and fear than chuck himself. Loved this actor. Supernatural squandered away two great characters by killing them off, one is the original death and the other is Crowley. Loved any episodes which had either of them.
They killed Crowley because the director got in a fight with the actor.

I've always liked that part. Dean does his usual backtalk, but realizes who he's doing it to when Death just goes quiet before saying, "Most people speak to me with more respect."
Had a DnD character who spoke to gods with 0 reverence. He openly acknowledged their power. But spoke to them like people who are accountable for their own BS.
Suffice to say a lot of gods were none to fond of him, save one. Who he became a champion for because that god found it absolutely hilarious that a mortal was telling gods they need to get their shit together.
Suffice to say, Dean talking to death, while being respectful, and also bribing him with something he likes as if he was just a person who had something Dean wanted and he was trying to get in the good graces of, might be why Death was so tolerant of him. Dean treated him differently than others do. Death respected that, even if it annoyed him a little.
I don’t really see it that way. Dean wasn’t back talking Death, he was pointing out that he was meant to fail and Death knew it. Dean was making a solid point, Death respected him for that. Most people fear Death and never want to face him. Dean being willing to stand up to him is probably seen as being cute to Death. Like a cute little puppy dog barking at a dragon eating queso and chips.
Death was such a badass character, literally everybody feared/respected him on some level. I can just imagine Death casually strolling through the gates of hell and fetching Sam's soul without anybody intervening, because honestly who would want to stand in his way when he wants to do something.

My favorite part of OG death was you got the impression that he was fond of the brothers while at the same time having zero issue swatting them like a fly. Billie is generally annoyed with them, but doesn't manage to convey the sense of menace and immeasurable power.

Death has the looks, voice, demeanor, and the car. They literally picked the personification of death in this actor outside of him not actually being a bad person.
Death is neither bad nor good, in any depiction. Death is just a fact. Death has no agenda, no ill intent. He just has a job to do.
I was never a "Supernatural" fanboy, but I always loved the original Death character. Death followed the cosmic rules, and even enforced them when he had to. Death struck me as a moral character; he had a role to play, and a job to do, and he did it. Death respected God and his creation, and was annoyed with Lucifer and the others who played with the established order of the universe. He was annoyed with the Winchesters because he saw them as rule-breakers and threats to the natural order of things, but came to understand and respect that they had a role to play, too. There were times in the plot line when I tended to agree with Death more than hot-headed Dean. Death really was one of the best written characters in the series.

I've already watched this show from start to finish about 10 times and I think most others watching this video has too so it doesn't really matter... But that was the worst "spoiler warning" ever 🤣
Most people (like 90%) don't read every letter, they scim through the text and the brain fills in the blanks, this is not a technique or anything but what the brain does subconsciously once you're fluent in a language.
This means that before most people has registered that it said spoiler warning, their brain has already computed about another sentence and a half.
So many things could've and should've been written much, much better for this ending.
That would have been awesome, but I would figure that OG death goes to the great empty when he dies, and we've seen that dean goes to heaven so eh
I must say I was quite upset when they killed him I enjoyed his character
The look on Death's face when he's handling Sam's soul....he looks like he's barely keeping from crying. "You poor thing," he seems to be thinking. "(The human soul) is more valuable than you can imagine." When he's putting Sam's soul back, you can tell he just wants to send it onward to its rest, rather than keep it on this Earth to experience even more pain, and more than likely go against his very precise instructions to not scratch at the wall. This was the moment when I truly came to respect, rather than just fear, Death as a character, and part of why I was so frothing mad when Sam and Dean killed him later on.

I got the steinheart's guide to the eldrics hunt by monkey dm. He has a stat block, and I use the picture to show a representation of what he may look like. But just an avatar since in my world, he personification of dying. And players can call on him by writing 4242564 (got that from soul eater the anime) in blood they get (kinda) what they want but have 2 permanent failed deaths, saving throws and disadvantage when they make them. And have the feature of "marked for death" from the seinharts book

This version of Death, as opposed to many others - including Billy - who're way more antagonistic, was a breath of fresh air. You could still sense the power he possessed and his utterly eldritch nature (something none of the other Horsemen or forces, bar perhaps The Empty, in Supernatural exuded) yet there was no real sense of active malice from him, ever, as if it was beneath him and alien to him - he's just doing a job and that's all he wants to do.
Julian Richings just looks so perfect for being "Death", calm and collected. Commanding so much respect from his intro, on.
The actor playing Lucifer is also one of a kind. While I love Tom Elis in the Lucifer show, this one is so different and well done.
Yeah, he is entertaining and fun - but I don't like him as Lucifer. Simply, does not fit the character. Lucifer is damn old, and the second most powerful being in the universe, second only to God. He accumulated eons of wisdom and experience, should know everything there is to know, especially when it comes to humans. And what do we get? The Devil who can't seem to understand the basic human interactions and concepts.
Nothing to do with Tom Elis, he plays what they wrote, perfectly. But that's the thing - they didn't write the devil. You don't feel anything powerful, ancient.
That's what Death has in this show and that is why we like him. He was written as someone as old as time (or at least as close as our imagination allows us) and the actor plays it.
Lucifer, on the other hand, was written as a charismatic likeable jerk. You can remove the whole Devil part of the story and the series won't change much, not really. You could have the same show with all the supernatural characters being human. And that's a problem, when the main premise of the show is not crucial.

This character was built very well and his actor did such a phenomenal job embodying the roll, that every time I see him on the screen, I get a sense of how much importance his character is and how powerful he is just because Deans' whole demeanor changes....mad respect for this

It was my personal head canon that death just decided to take an extended vacation away from the winchesters after Dean ‘killed’ him. Such a truely menacing character. Billie was great but she didn’t seem nearly as intimidating. I really wished we could have seen him come back at the end of season 15 to reap god as he foretold.

I like the detail of the weather outside getting worse the more Death speaks and how annoyed he is when he talks about Lucifer putting a leash on him
I'm so happy his entrance made #1 on the list. Out of all the shows that depict death as a character, out of all anime scenes where death has an epic, "all powerful" type entrance, out of all the lore and stories surrounding various cultures and religions, this simple, and rather elegant entrance is by far my favorite. The song perfectly completes the scene and I will never not have this image in my imagination when I think of the persona of death. Supernatural did an amazing job at casting the right person for the role, with mistakes few and far between in my opinion, but this definitely takes the gold in casting choices. I cannot praise that entrance scene highly enough.
I'm a little disappointed that Dean killed this version of Death. He literally calls on death to help him, agrees to Deaths offer, then at the end kills him in the end because Sam went all weepy on Dean. I mean, I get that the show was/is about them fighting a war with monsters/angels/demons/etc.. However, Death is something that was outside of that, well only until after they broke Lucifers bind to him.

In the war between good and evil. Death stands neutral on the side lines, to reap those that die, from either side.
How ever, he did give a helping hand now and then when the natural order of things needed to be put back in order.

This show is just so damn good. the way death walks up on him while explaining the origins of the mark and how it came to Dean, the whole time closing the distance and making the most eerie eye contact. You can FEEL the tension, it's thicker than frozen peanut butter lol
While death was also well written in Supernatural, Julian Richings, the actor who played him, deserves so much recognition. He was perfect for the role.
I'm not sure he'd appreciate being told that as it's not too flattering in most senses, but even his appearance helped the performance. Along with everything else he brought to the table.
