I have to agree Mighty no 9 also broke my heart as well because the game felt like it was trying to be a true successor to Mega Man. Mighty no 9 could have been a good hit if it weren't for the delays a animated series even when the game wasn't out and the whole Red Ash Kickstarter as well. Not only that we do have the Gunvolt series from inti creates which I think are the true successors to Mega Man. Great video by way keep it up as always 👍
9:42 Ah, the grand return of the *THAT IS BULLSHIT* running gag. How I’ve missed it. But really, the one time I’ve backed a Kickstarter project, it was between Shantae: Half Genie Hero and Mighty No. 9…Needless to say, I’m glad Shantae was the one I backed.
ah Kickstarter, another day where i'm extremely grateful for how much of a masterpiece Bloodstained was and still is and how much of a letdown Mighty Blunder 9 was
Based on this list it seems like it's usually up to the fans to create proper spiritual successors to beloved IPs. Except Bloodstained. That turned out pretty well.
I mean iga is literally doing everything in his power to make sure he completes _every goal_ he can, even to the point he halted a sequel just to complete it. He didn't want to fall into inafune's trappings, which honestly, I still think that's a good quality of him
Yeah, Bloodstained has 3 three games 2 of them being old-school Castlevania games of Bloodstained Curse of the Moon 1 and 2. Bloodstained Ritual of the Night has a Meta game called Bloodstained a Castlevania of the whip and knockback.

17:40 Two reasons. The first because the Japanese government is investing into companies who go ahead with NFT, cryptocurrency and Web3 technologies, and the second because Square Enix is the Japanese EA.

It's not a game but a Kickstarter that disappointed me was Animusic 3. For those not in the know, Animusic is a series of 3D animated music videos with instruments and other contraptions performing different original songs themselves. Pretty neat stuff that released in the mid 2000s. Anyways the third entry was promised with a release of 2013, promising merch and even using updated hardware through the Unreal Engine. Unfortunately, the project faded away due to the over ambitious nature of the whole thing. Eventually members of the development team left the project and the rights to the series were given to a completely different company, which currently has no plans for it. Saddens me to see such a great idea go to waste like this.
Jeez I thought Kickstarters were always good thanks for making this video. (Plus I love the megaman series and I can't wait for the next legacy collection)
Kickstarter can go one of 4 ways: - it actually succeeds - it’s ruined by outside forces - ruined by too much promise and too little execution -ruined by simply being a scam to get a quick buck
Out of the entire Mighty No. 9 segment, I was only surprised from the fact that Inafune went for the NFT stuff. How the “mighty” has indeed fallen huh?
Reminds me of the time of the Kickstarter for Paprium, people wanted a Beat 'em Up game for a while, and they send LOTS of money. unfortunately, all that money was sent to a bank in China and said bank was under the Chinese Mafia's ownership. Same thing with the Kickstarter for Beast's Fury, a fighting game that was supposed to be released ten years ago, but was canceled because the money was sent from a "Specific" Community that was supporting the Kickstarter. Guess we'll never have Benny the Dog of Hype nor Ego the Cyber Raptor in a fighting game.
A poketuber I like was sponsored by something similar to Untamed Isles once. His comments chewed him out. He revealed in one video where he was going through his Reddit and found a post about it that he didn’t know the dark side of NFTs at the time, but can’t do anything about the video now since it would be a breach of contract to remove or edit it and he could be sued.
I really hope the armed Fantasia Kickstarter comes to fruition it’s the first one I’ve backed because a modern version of wild arms seems awesome. At least the devs are being fairly active about updating on its developments
First time I was ever introduced to Kickstarter was a game called Kaiju Combat or how it’s now called Colossal Kaiju Combat which was said to be a successor to the Godzilla Pipworks Trilogy and me being a Kaiju fan and loved all 3 of those games when I was young I was excited… 😒 god was I disappointed
I played MN9 and yeah it sucked but it had potential. Only Kickstarter project I actually backed was the Lionwing Gaming's localization of the Tokusatsu themed Japanese TRPG Convictor Drive: Armored by Grief and it's actually awesome.
Dang. Buyer beware indeed. I knew Mighty Number 9 would be on here since you are a massive Mega Man fan. Even if you weren't, I'm sure it would have been on here.
Mighty No. 9 was one of the few examples of a Kickstarter fail becoming at least somewhat well known outside the gaming community, so it would've been high ranking for sure one way or another.
NGL the gradual building anger reminds me of Top 15 Worst Mavericks, which was one of the best parts of both vids. (Next month: MORE KAMEN RIDER JOKES!)
My pick would've been Beast's Fury, which I supported both on Indiegogo AND Kickstarter (though with a lot less on the later platform to keep development going).
10:34 I mean, Bravely Default has a history of save-data-deletion psychs, and from memory Banjo & Kazooie threatened it if you cheated too much. Oh, and of course Undertale - a major part of that game's _story_ is about the ability to save and reload.
I mean...come on...we ALL knew Mighty NO! 9 would be on here; even if you've been living under Patrick Star's rock, you've most certainly heard of it. Random aside, I recall hearing from Guru Larry that the WiiU version has two game-breaking, console-bricking bugs: one is triggered by pausing the game...the other by firing your weapon. I...don't even have a joke for that, that's just funny. Meanwhile, while it wasn't developed via Kickstarter (that I know of, anyway), Axie Infinity is just...no. What's worse than an NFT game? An NFT game made by exploiting poor Filipino citizens for free labor via Pyramid Scheme. Thankfully interest in the NFT market is near-zero; I guess, in this case, NFT stands for "No Fucking Thanks". You'd think people would learn by now that "get rich quick" schemes are...just that: evil schemes. *cue up the Tom & Jerry Movie clip "We've got to have...money."* Oh sure, the allure of a quick and easy profit is tempting, but nothing truly worthwhile is ever so easily gotten: certain...sacrifices...must be made. Beh...can Dio please just steamroll the NFT/crypto/blockchain bullshit in to oblivion already? :/
A common thread behind lots of good kickstarters is a good proof of concept shown off. A game demo, a video clip trailer, a sample track, all these serve not only as a great way to provide marketing for the campaign, but it shows that they are working on it. If they just over promise without any progress reports or anything to show, don’t pledge.
24:07 Really curious that Fur Fun of all things was in the dishonourable mentions. That thing didn't even have that much presence in English-speaking communities at all, at best it made Jim Sterling go out and tear the game's creator apart (which was, admittedly a cool moment), but it was otherwise not really a memorable disaster.
To me it's hilarious how Smash Overload may or may not have inspired the amazing Smash Remix, which not only adds the same characters that were hyped in that Kickstarter, but gave them unique movesets too instead of being blatant model swaps. As they say, you can kill the man, but not the idea.
Seeing how many people on this list are banking on NFT's is frankly disgusting cause it's universally agreed on that they are BS and will NEVER WORK, and if anyone tries to sneak them into a game, they are always going to get caught, so hopefully NFT's go away forever
I'd thought MN9 would be ranked 1 on this list (given how personal this felt for you), but giving it #2 does feel a little bit deserving… Because this game can go take a Giant No. 2, and BURN TO THE GROUND!!!
Aside the polemics with Square Enix i am still super hyped for the new Final Fantasy XVI and i hope it becomes one of the biggest and Best games of 2023 EVER. Hopefully.
Ugh. Inafune really went that route? He sounds desperate as all Hell. He should REALLY take a cue from Iga and especially Mega Man itself and stop trying to shoot for the stars in one blast. And Molyneux will be Molyneux.
Mr. Molyneux actually was more than a pitchman for overly ambitious "remake" projects, but I'm convinced that his time in the top echelon of EA (he was a VP at one point I think) inflicted irreparable damage to his creative genius.
@@gordontaylor2815 Yeah, I know, Populous and Dungeon Keeper blah blah. Thing is he grossly underestimates how much it takes to make anything more complicated, and so consistently, too, meaning he's either deliberately conning us based on his glory days for easy money or is LUDICROUSLY incompetent outside of being an idea guy yet refuses to humble his projects. Sure, the original Kinect got nerfed shortly before release, throwing him and its other devs under the double decker bus, but there was no fucking way Milo was going to live up to the hype regardless, and Fable being compromised already called the guy's rep into question. I used to enjoy funding so many games, but I kept getting burnt. We Happy Few, Hello Neighbor, Indivisible, Mighty No.9, Yooka Laylee were all disappointments in my opinion. Though Yooka Laylee actually made a sequel called The Impossible Lair which was an amazing 2D platformer in the style of the old Donkey Kong games. There were a few games I enjoyed funding like Omori and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. I kickstarted Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, they gave out a bonus called Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising which is a prequel focusing on doing missions for townspeople but it was somewhat disappointing, I hope the actual game is good.

17:40 I actually still question this, to the point where your “ignorance and greed” answer might be more ignorance than greed. I kinda figured NFTs had crashed hard enough for even greedy CEOs to realize they weren’t worth it. Maybe Square just got burned?
About Untamed Isles, since the inspiration is Pokemon that game had a consultant in the name of Wolfe Glick, the pokemon VGC world champ. if only they have no web3 inspirations from the very beginning i might have give it a pass as a case of "be careful of who are funding your game"
Honestly I like the bosses of 9, I mean it could of helped they didn't try to extend to the moon before making an airtight shuttle that wasn't going to fall apart at the Stratosphere. The boss intros with the WARNING WARNING gave a good tone of "here's the boss, good luck"
Ah kickstarters; it's the one thing in gaming I never ever ever ever EVER do. Mostly because they usually end up being a disaster and you pretty much waste your money like going through micro transactions. There's many failed Kickstarter games I can think of that fail horribly. (Especially an obvious numbered one.)
You know what, I have my own dishonorable mention for you that comes from last year. So a game early that caught my radar early on in its life was a game called Indie Rumble. It didn't look all that impressive and was meant to be an indie platform fighter that was a massive crossover, but the initial roster had mostly the creator's characters from their other games, which tended to be shorter versions of other popular games at the time (ex. Omori and Monkey Ball). However, though the project eventually got a glow up and was going to heavily focus and get what it needed to be done before it went to do the kickstarter. Everything was looking great, somewhat big names were being announced, everything was looking up. Hell, on the day of the kickstarter, it was confirmed that V-1 from Ultrakill would be playable and the guy from Postal would be a boss. The next day, allegations came out against the creator. Some were kinda dumb like being a jerk in the comments of Steam, and some a bit more serious. The whole project was on the line, and he stepped down from the project so that it could continue, even without him. The day afterwards, some people who had their characters in the game (won't be pointing fingers) pulled out after calling the team unprofessional for the situation, and the project and kickstarter got cancelled right there on the spot. It was heart breaking, to say the least. I was just someone who wanted to heavily back the game, the staff had it worse. I wish they are doing better now, but man was the whole situation just hurts a bit to look back on to see how everything fell apart in like 4 days of the kickstarter going up.
Night Cry not only should've been a dishonorable mention, but also on the list at a high spot because of how much they screwed over the backers. If you've watched the tangomushi video, you know why. It's like they made the same mistakes as the MN9 kickstarter, except worse.
Yooka Laylee got a sequel and it was much better than the original, maybe that's why it didn't make it on here. Although, you also got the cancellation of the Wii U version in favor of Switch
Well, look at Playtonic now; they have their own publishing branch, Playtonic Friends, and all of their published games were all well-received. Now, the question is, what is their development branch, Playtonic Games, currently working on? They left a micro teaser a year or two ago and we still don't know what it is...
IDK if I should be glad or not that I never backed Mighty *NO* 9. I mean, between the announcement and release, I was a literal teenager and didn't have money of my own, so I couldn't back it even if I _wanted_ to. It's a shame because 2013 was also the year I got into MM and in those 3 years, I played and beat every Classic game except MM&B and every X game except CM.
Nightcry should have been mentioned. A Clock Tower spiritual Successor that failed in every way and a garbage collector's edition that they charged $200 for something that cost $5 to produce
There are only a handful of Kickstarters I backed, and that's because I chose wisely AND they actually followed through on their promises: * Bloodstained * The Legend of Vox Machina * The Resident Evil board games This list of ten duds? A flat-out Mighty NO to those.
Number 2 Wimpy no 9 talk about a Yuji Naka moment…funny or sad kicker was that those 2 was the brush while Naoto Ohshima & Akira Kitamura were the artists.
One thing to note about Strong Bad's Cool Games for Attractive People (Yes that's the actual name) Telltale Games had already made multiple point and click games before they got the Homestar Runner license. So at least that was made by a company in a genre they had experience in. Also. I knew Star Citizen was going to be on here when I remembered a video someone (Won't say who because. As I've said before. I hate the idea of being responsible for someone getting hate mail Andor death threats) said that a ship in that game while locked behind a paywall. Cost TWENTY-SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!
One of the biggest Kickstarter Fails in my opinion is Day Of Dragons, tons of money given to a project that only has a tech demo with preexisting assets to show for it, immature and toxic responses from the developers in the face of legitimate questions, 3 years since the early accesses release with no news in sight, and threatening the RUclipsr IGP who made videos discussing the event with a Cease and Desist Order, there is a certain word that comes to mind.....SCAM
Kickstarters are a combo of a gamble and a coin flip. On the one hand, ya have giants like Bloodstained, Shantae, and our lord and savior with a digging appliance for a weapon. On the other hand…these guys who are on the list.
Looking back on the huge blunder of the Smash Overload kickstarter, it is kinda funny thinking about it since nowadays there is a ROM hack of Smash 64 that has added a BUNCH of characters and stages & is playable on N64 hardware for free! That being Smash Remix. This ROM hack in a way delivered the promises that Overload could not. P.S. Remix also has Conker as a unique newcomer to their hack.

But to be honest I'm glad this game made Capcom realize that Mega Man actually matters and we got Mega Man 11 along with accessibility to the other games through compilations. Not only that we do have the Gunvolt series from inti creates which I think are the true successors to Mega Man. Great video by way keep it up as always 👍
Yeah give mega Man a a break good thing

Ah, the grand return of the *THAT IS BULLSHIT* running gag. How I’ve missed it.
But really, the one time I’ve backed a Kickstarter project, it was between Shantae: Half Genie Hero and Mighty No. 9…Needless to say, I’m glad Shantae was the one I backed.
I backed Half-Genie Hero too.... well sort of, I helped with PayPal.
Honestly, with this being a "fails" countdown, I honestly thought that Josh would join QG here.
Seems true to form.
Yeah, they did a top 10 Capcom fails on the Fiery Joker channel.
that could be cool, but i understand josh has a lot on his plate.
ah Kickstarter, another day where i'm extremely grateful for how much of a masterpiece Bloodstained was and still is and how much of a letdown Mighty Blunder 9 was
Based on this list it seems like it's usually up to the fans to create proper spiritual successors to beloved IPs.
@@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard32 He's not letting vengeance get the better of his perspective like Inafune had and still is. As hit-or-miss as he was with Castlevania as opposed to Inafune who's misses were largely out of his control, he gets that a spiritual successor is not the original and so should never aim to be a full-on replacement, plus he isn't using his reputation as an excuse to hastily lay a ton of product eggs at once *coughMN9anime* *coughRedAsh* .
@@CarbonRollerCaco um. Curse of the moon 1 and 2
17:40 Two reasons. The first because the Japanese government is investing into companies who go ahead with NFT, cryptocurrency and Web3 technologies, and the second because Square Enix is the Japanese EA.
I thought Konami was the Japanese EA.
@@jamieodonnell8344 Konami doesn't even seem to be much of a video game company at all these days - it's all about the "pachislots" now...
4:44 even with just some time spent trying to learn how to use Unity, I agree that making games, even small ones, is not an easy task at all. People really need to give game developers more respect.
21:05 yup. Here we go. Mighty Number 9 flopped SO HARD!
23:34 Capcom had to bring Mega Man back. I'm glad Capcom brought Mega Man back.
Only for Mega Man to fail again. 11 sucked.
@@SomePkmnlovingdudeAnd you think Mighty no 9 is a masterpiece?
@@bonehead8803 Not really.
For something as infamous as Godus, I have never HEARD of it until now.
Kickstarter can go one of 4 ways:
- it actually succeeds
- it’s ruined by outside forces
- ruined by too much promise and too little execution
-ruined by simply being a scam to get a quick buck
I think even Wario would know how unviable NFTs would be.
Mighty No. 9- I am. Inevitable
You did great as always QG!
Little reminder that Inafune-san apparently didn't understand the Kickstarter fees he had to pay, so that 4 million became more of a 1.5 million.
I really hope the armed Fantasia Kickstarter comes to fruition it’s the first one I’ve backed because a modern version of wild arms seems awesome. At least the devs are being fairly active about updating on its developments
2:25 funding for a rom hack sounds borderline illegal
15:06
Comrade Black, but how?!
(Not gonna lie, I was NOT expecting him to show up.. still, great to see de Blob talked about in modern times.)
Kinda surprised that Beast's Fury wasn't on this list or as a dishonorable mention. Anyone remembers that game?
I do and I wish I didn't.
Who
Two words: Night Cry. If anyone's watched the video by tangomushi, you'll know why.
@@infinitedreamer9359 The title NightCry is one word, but yeah. Thank you for telling me this.
At Number 10, but hey, there's Smash Remix though. And the later versions lets you play as Conker and even the Mad Piano from Mario 64.
Great countdown as always with you're vids, also those new glasses Rock!
Nearly half of these failures would move on to NFT-based projects.
Oh, Vaas... Your description of insanity is well appreciated.
4:44 That indie dev wouldn't happen to be Wayforward(creators of Shantae) by any chance, would it?
Reminder that Inafune was taking credit all these years for Mega Man’s creation. He didn’t create shit beyond Zero.
I played MN9 and yeah it sucked but it had potential. Only Kickstarter project I actually backed was the Lionwing Gaming's localization of the Tokusatsu themed Japanese TRPG Convictor Drive: Armored by Grief and it's actually awesome.
Boy I can't wait to be on this list one day
By that I mean failing to reach a goal, not scamming I'll be damned lol
Sup, Count?
Don’t sell yourself short.
20:54 Ah yes, the entry we all knew was coming.
I could hear the 'Hello, you' the second I saw Peter's bald head. Can we get Armin Shimmerman to play Petey in a movie?
I haven’t seen you this furious in a long time QG.
Oh wow thanks for blowing my eardrums! geez that's so loud!! 8:00
NGL the gradual building anger reminds me of Top 15 Worst Mavericks, which was one of the best parts of both vids.
(Next month: MORE KAMEN RIDER JOKES!)
a rom hack as a kickstarter that's a first i heard that QG
and on the other side of the coin
we have games like Shovel Knight and Undertale
My pick would've been Beast's Fury, which I supported both on Indiegogo AND Kickstarter (though with a lot less on the later platform to keep development going).
Night Cry should've been on here and at a high spot too. If anyone's watched the video by tangomushi, you'll know why.
23:13 epic reference
What vector said at 17:19 is how I feel about the re:legend Kickstarter that was posted over 6 1/2 years ago by square Enix
10:34 I mean, Bravely Default has a history of save-data-deletion psychs, and from memory Banjo & Kazooie threatened it if you cheated too much.
Oh, and of course Undertale - a major part of that game's _story_ is about the ability to save and reload.
Well, it looks like Antonblast might be that exception to the rule, like Shantae and Shovel Knight.
Really interesting and great video!!
20:54 We don't talk about Mighty No. 9
When it comes to Kickstarter fails, it is... inevitable...
I'd thought MN9 would be ranked 1 on this list (given how personal this felt for you), but giving it #2 does feel a little bit deserving…
Because this game can go take a Giant No. 2, and BURN TO THE GROUND!!!
Mighty Number 9 turned out to be a Mighty Number 2…
So the placement on this list was appropriate!
Aside the polemics with Square Enix i am still super hyped for the new Final Fantasy XVI and i hope it becomes one of the biggest and Best games of 2023 EVER. Hopefully.
I’m impressed a certain mighty number wasn’t #1!
It's like he sees computers as literal magic boxes that can do anything in the right hands-like he's literally living in a fantasyland-and doesn't care about the lies he tells, seeing them as white lies because he thinks shit will work out in the end. And when it doesn't, he's just "ah, well, life goes on" and moves on to the next thing he can't perceive as implausible, not thinking about how much of others' time and money he wasted. Way too chill, unserious and confident in others.
I know this may sound silly this video suggestion but how about a Top 13 Worst Elemental Bosses? Each boss for each of these elements: Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Ice, Eletricity (Lightning), Light, Dark, Metal, Nature, Undead, Poison, and Magic.
Surprised Yooka Laylee didn’t make the list
Yooka Laylee got a sequel and it was much better than the original, maybe that's why it didn't make it on here. Although, you also got the cancellation of the Wii U version in favor of Switch
i thought yooka laylee wasn't that bad
The number 1 pick is eerily identical to the introduction story of the character of Mr. Big from the PBS Kids cartoon Wordgirl.
Nightcry should have been mentioned. A Clock Tower spiritual Successor that failed in every way and a garbage collector's edition that they charged $200 for something that cost $5 to produce
I honestly feel so bad for Mr. Henderson, being cheated to that extent. I hope he's doing well.
I hope Eiyuden Chronicles doesn't end up on a list like this but from what we've seen so far that probably won't happen
There are only a handful of Kickstarters I backed, and that's because I chose wisely AND they actually followed through on their promises:
* Bloodstained
* The Legend of Vox Machina
* The Resident Evil board games
This list of ten duds? A flat-out Mighty NO to those.
I should've backed them, and BOTH MST3K ones
27:12 "I too was told something will be done by Christmas" 👴
MN9 wasn't terrible, but needed lots more time in the oven. Although I've heard that Mighty Gunvolt was a better version, something good came from it.
Number 2 Wimpy no 9 talk about a Yuji Naka moment…funny or sad kicker was that those 2 was the brush while Naoto Ohshima & Akira Kitamura were the artists.
Shovel Knight, Undertale, and the potato salad guy remain the only good kickstarters to this day.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, A Hat in Time & Bloodstained: Are we jokes to you?
A'ight, who wants to guess where Mighty No. 9 is? My guess is top 3.
Editor's note: Called it!
I'm gonna guess number 6-5
Close enough
One thing to note about Strong Bad's Cool Games for Attractive People (Yes that's the actual name) Telltale Games had already made multiple point and click games before they got the Homestar Runner license. So at least that was made by a company in a genre they had experience in.
Also. I knew Star Citizen was going to be on here when I remembered a video someone (Won't say who because. As I've said before. I hate the idea of being responsible for someone getting hate mail Andor death threats) said that a ship in that game while locked behind a paywall. Cost TWENTY-SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!
One of the biggest Kickstarter Fails in my opinion is Day Of Dragons, tons of money given to a project that only has a tech demo with preexisting assets to show for it, immature and toxic responses from the developers in the face of legitimate questions, 3 years since the early accesses release with no news in sight, and threatening the RUclipsr IGP who made videos discussing the event with a Cease and Desist Order, there is a certain word that comes to mind.....SCAM
they look good on you! very snazzy glasses
Kickstarters are a combo of a gamble and a coin flip. On the one hand, ya have giants like Bloodstained, Shantae, and our lord and savior with a digging appliance for a weapon. On the other hand…these guys who are on the list.
Speaking of kickstarters...
I'm still waiting for Ex Zodiac.
"How long before anarchy becomes the only solution left?"
Well what if the NFTs miraculously manage to survive anarchy? what would we do then?!
More anarchy, maybe?
Looking back on the huge blunder of the Smash Overload kickstarter, it is kinda funny thinking about it since nowadays there is a ROM hack of Smash 64 that has added a BUNCH of characters and stages & is playable on N64 hardware for free! That being Smash Remix. This ROM hack in a way delivered the promises that Overload could not.
P.S. Remix also has Conker as a unique newcomer to their hack.
