Batman Beyond’s Toxic Love

- Batman Beyond was a great show and one I grew up loving, and season one really sticks out in my mind as great. I ended up choosing one of my favorite episodes and one of the most impactful on me personally. Batman beyond was just different and I hate that Terry doesn't have more outings in movies or animation.

Never realized this but Terry & Dick Grayson are a lot alike personality wise
Truthfully, I like to think that terry got to be the son dick wished he was. Terry got a much more patient batman, and had family outside of him which is needed to maintain a healthy life. I think dick would be proud and a little jelous which could have been fun to see
It's what makes Terry and Dick both the perfect people to take up the Mantle of Batman.
They're everything Bruce is just without the crippling trauma and anger.
@@tristanpelkey9109The argument in comics is that Dick is too much his own man and hero to take up the Bat mantle.
It is such a shame that Bruce Tim denied Terry of having a Bat family over all the weird stuff with Barbara. Like at least Tim Drake's departure was traumatic in a way that made sense and felt like good batman writing. But Bruce overall shouldn't have been alone and such a recluse especially when JL/JLU gave him a perfectly healthy ship with WW (which was peak here). Terry definitely could have taken up the mantle of Batman without being the only bat family member. Use the comics argument where Dick is too much his own man as Nightwing protecting Bludhaven and Barbara has both gotten too old and is too busy as the commissioner where she thinks she can do more good. Bruce can be happily married to an immortal Amazonian princess. He doesn't need to be a grumpy old loner man. Gotham would still need A batman and he would still be unable to do it himself which is where Terry would come in (and for God's sake, NO to that plot of Amanda Waller making him a Bruce clone).
Might be the inspiration
Honestly Melanie & Terry had better chemistry than he did with Dana. They both had that Batman / Catwoman role.
The whole Catwoman and Batman is a toxic love, even in a recent comics they say that they never will had a happy ending.
@@mayotango1317 finally someone who gets it, Dana is basically dating a guy who is ghosting her and is still there and sees the good in him even when people around her believes Terry is just a bad guy
@@mayotango1317blame the writers
@@himzi1Terry telling Dana the truth was a good way to end it showing they could have an actual life together. I would like to see the dynamic with her knowing though. Him having someone to come home to that supports him
@@himzi1I dont think Dana thinks he is a bad guy. I think Dana is understanding and patient.
Terry lost his dad and took a part time job to support his family.
Sooner or Later that patience will run out. Its understandable
Terry and Melanie are honestly such a weirdly good ship. Their chemistry is good on its own even without the obvious Batman/Catwoman parallel.
Frankly, I kinda prefer it over the wore-out Bat/Cat dynamic. Although, that’s probably because it is sprinkled everywhere.
@@ffjj3964they almost made it interesting having them get married then scrapped the idea. A married Batman would make for such interesting stories
@@tomraineofmagigor3499 I didn’t buy it for a second. I don’t see any intriguing stories with Batman marrying Catwoman. Let’s be real here, writers like to torrent Batman. If they did get married, more likely than not, they would’ve been divorced or one would’ve died within a year.
@@ffjj3964 well that's shitty writers. The concept itself has potential
@@ffjj3964 , I like the best friend relationship between Helena Wayne and Power Girl as much as I like the best friend relationship between Green Arrow and Superman in the Smallville tv series, but the only time I've seen the relationship between Batman and Catwoman relationship working well was in the Telltales games.
One of the things that stands out to me is that Terry has a supporting network. Sure, working for Bruce likely ease that financial burden on his mother raising both kids by herself, but if he really wants out of this Batman life he could. But Melanie? She doesn't have friends or other relatives to turn to. She is a 17 year old girl and leaving the Royal Flush Gang is literally being on the streets with nowhere to go. She eventually leaves her family, but if you think about it she is in a toxic household with no means to get out unless she makes a leap of faith. And she does.
Even though i liked Terry and Melanie's relationship im glad it ended because Terry is like those rational people that see the biggest red flag in a relationship and just dropped it instead of thinking he can fix her.
Plus i like how Melanie got out of the family business after being betrayed by her parents to focus not only herself but giving her brother a better life.
what I personally loved and got the most out of beyond, was the struggles of youth explored in its many facets. it really spoke to me that people like paul dini and bruce timm were raising awareness through their stories even all those years ago.
@@skele_wave yeah those stories of troubled, misunderstood and terrible youths were great
I really wish 10 (Melanie Walker) got to partner up with Terry and became Batgirl Beyond. That would’ve elevated her story a lot more to leave the world of crime behind
I wish we got that instead too instead of the Supergirl show and Batwoman series.
It’s a shame that the women in dc get such crap writing when it comes to shows about them and the actresses such shit treatment by the production team and fans alike
2:55 Me: Hips shouldn't do that, right?
Also Me: DAYMN
If the show during that time was given another season, one of the best storylines which was scrapped was letting a villain finally take revenge against Blight and his co-horts for genuinely enacted a Declaration of War on another country that is literally close to DC's USA standards. Blight always felt to me as a monster slowly losing himself to radiation before literally becoming a threat to human existence.
Blight / Mr. Powers’ personality being a metaphor for nuclear decay is such a good story decision. Slowly going from a put-together businessman to a raving maniac before finally exploding (?) in the end is an amazing arc for the character.
Blight is like a weird hybrid of Tony Stark and Lex Luthor, but I doubt him being intentionally killed instead of being killed accidentally would actually happen even if the WB Studios never scrapped the Batman Beyond IP.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr To be fair, he comes back in the continuation comics, though I'm unsure as to exactly how.
Once you're in a position where you can choose to not be around toxic environments, just do that as much as you can.
Indeed one teen could do that… the other… I dunno what other options they had.
Terry's relationship with Ten is one of the best and most tragic. She would have been a great person to be with if it was not for her family.
Dana had anger issues but it was understandable. She felt Terry was dissing her and wanted him to be straight with her.
At least he has better than Peter sadly.
Ace did end up loving Terry to
You mean 10, right?? Not the robot. 😂
Ace is the robot. And the dog. Ten is Melanie and she would have been a great batgirl. And a better interest for Terry. She was his Selina Kyle.
@@bman3794 also Ace was the little girl but yeah my bad
@@mandalorianhunter1 in justice league
@@bman3794 yeah I know
Terry and Melanie are an example of a doomed romance. It's never going to work out no matter how hard they try, and that's really tragic to me. Even in her last appearance, Melanie obviously still loved Terry, while Terry couldn't get past her being a criminal, and he didn't didn't want to leave Dana for her.
Excellent video. One can definitely understand Terry's motivations and feelings (and I like the parallels with Melanie's character too). Terry and Melanie had excellent chemistry and I like how their relationship was written.
Great points about Willie too. Like you, I like how the DCAU showed the other, deeper factors/causes for Willie's actions. It's a nuanced characterization and sadly so realistic (especially the way that Willie's father abused him and raised him).
One of the things that I love most about the DCAU is what you mentioned - their characterization. I rewatched the DCAU as an adult and I was impressed with how nuanced and superb their characterization is. They also portrayed the issues in a mature way too - and did so without dumbing down the content or making it overly complex. The DCAU was incredible and a great example of excellent writing.
Awesome video again. Have a nice day.
Willie Wyatt represented what could have happened to Terry if Terry didn't have friends and family to rely on. Life was tough for Terry before he met Bruce Wayne, and his last argument with his father showed how he didn't know how to deal with being an adult. But he was nudged to have a sense of responsibility. Willie was pumped full of toxic masculinity by his father and that spilled out into his control over Golem and eventually telekinesis, just taking whatever he wanted. Terry learned how to control his temper, Willie exploded with rage.
in the rebirth comics recently he actually is in a relationship with her. its very good.
Who? The nerd kid or Terry?
@@truthspreader1996 Terry of course. Batman beyond pulls all the ladies.
I wish Terry and Melanie ended up together! 😭😭😭 Dana doesn’t deserve him!
Facts .
I actually liked 10/Madeline Walker's character, and I wish that they kept her because she seemed like she could be Batman Beyond's version of Catwoman who joins Batman's side and becomes a great ally, like one Batman Beyond comic, but in other Batman Beyond comics Madeline Walker seemed like she was warming up to being a valuable character to Terry and the Batman crew and could be someone that they could trust and ally with, but they made Terry and her break it off. I wish that they kept Madeline Walker around and made her an ally of Terry like Batman Beyond's Catwoman.
I’ve been binging your stuff for the last few days, and I really enjoy your perspective on these shows/movies. Real glad I found this channel, keep up the good work

Melody definitely helped define my taste in women
Also at 5:00 the scene where her and terry embrace and kiss in the rain is one of the most romantic things I ever saw as a kid and made me a lifelong shipper of them despite their flaws
I remember I had the episode for the first clips, on DVD. This episode was always depressing and great to me.
When people say kid show, I think people literally take it as it’s for everyone.
Batman and beyond was aimed for teenagers. It’s the same excuse why adults won’t watch cartoons because they feel like all cartoons are meant for kids but no, that’s not true.
The Batman universe always had a mature side to it that was aimed for an order audience.
Batman beyond is not meant for kids. It was on a kids program, but the story itself is not meant for a young audience. But it had to be somewhere for people to know that the show existed.
If Warren McGinnis is still alive, he'll beat the crap out of Willie's father.
If Warren McGinnis never died to Blight and The Joker Gang then he absolutely would've kicked Willie's father's ass.
I love Batman beyond, but the one problem I had with the show that it was more focused on being an action story than dedicating personal episodes to the characters of their relationships. Batman the animated series, had episodes of developing the characters without a lot of action and I feel like that’s what beyond was missing.
I wished Terry and Bruce would spend time together to build their relationship besides little character moments that don’t even last two minutes. The same way with Terry’s relationship with his girlfriend was always the exact same situation of arguing about not showing up. It was getting old.
I wish they actually took time to work everything out without a lot of action, but that’s not what they were doing for.
Uhhh 10:06 was just an absurd bleep sound it scared the fuck out of me
I don't think Bruce wanted to be Batman, I think he needed to be Batman.
great video. I appreciate how you delayed to allow a period of greiving. Can't wait for what you have in store next.
I always had a hope than Melanie would redeem herself and become the new Spoiler.
The DCAU was the best superhero expanded universe ever. Sorry Marvel, but DC is still the king after all these years ;)

Personally, he seems like he’s trying to rationalize the situation. His sudden jump to a more optimistic tone and sort of shake to his voice captures it for me. He’s sounds like he’s trying to find a way to accept what’s happened. He knows this is his fault, he knows he caused the downfall. But all he can do is accept it. Nothing else he can do now but accept he’s caused this
Let me know what ya’ll think
once again dropping bangers!!! never fails to make my day!!!!! love these 90’s cartoon type videos
2:56 Regarding the comment on screen, there could be a few reasons.
Some better, some worse.
I would like to say it's a "Black Arachnia" reason, went to a club and designed her based on things they saw.
I mean, he did just leave a dance club.
Watchtower database reference. We up.
For all its flaws and "Strangled By the Red String" romance, for some reason Terry x Melanie felt *right and proper* (if not *rewatchable)* compared to long-running official relationships like Peter Parker x Mary Jane Watson (Spider-Man: The Animated Series), that infamous Jean Grey/Scott Summers/James Logan love triangle (X-Men: The Animated Series), and even Zuko x Mai (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Korrasami (The Legend of Korra). Not sure why, though voice acting, decent pacing, and plot direction may have helped.
so happy i found this chanel
Always thought that Terry had missed a shot with Melanie. She could have been easily the next batwoman. Something that Bruce couldn't get Selena Kyle to be.
Sorry she did have a small run here and there but she never stayed as batwoman.
Melanie wanted to be something more then a thief. She didn't care for the cash the gold the money. All she cared for was the family and she loved the thrill. But once her family got to Gotham those desires were slowly weaning. And so she had more of a leg up in a change of heart and Catwoman did.
I just finished watching because the memories .
Great video man
I still ship them
I always love Terry & Melanie gives me Bruce and selina vibes except one went straight and the other one still steals
The channel Implictly Pretentious put it the best -- Bruce Wayne *was* Batman. Batman is Terry's *job.*
Yuhhh more Batman Beyond & x-men vids ! 🔥 🔥
14:37 I haven't been paying much attention to the news lately, what happened?
Right there with you, just as confused cuz I got enough going on in my life that I haven't got time to watch the news much
No this relationship was fine. It's his other one that was toxic and harmful to the both of them. His relationship with Dana was nothing but a cycle of him constantly hurting her. It had to end and he needed to be with someone who could live his life with him.
Shields Meadow
nice video m8
*Why did you censor one curse word but you didn't censor the rest of them in your video??*
What's he talking about at the end was there another sch**l sh**ting in america im unaware of?
Edit:yep I just checked and there was one like 10 days ago
I liked 10 better that Terry's girlfriend lol
What happened weeks ago?

Ten is definitely a 10.
2:54 it was made for teenagers, not kids.
2:55 why not? Why the heck you it to be anything less? Even kids wouldn't be this sensitive about it. Honestly it's pathetic.
Terry & Dana are a good couple. At the end Melanie made her choice. Well it was good while it lasted.
8:05 why always blame the parents? Willy should be held accountable for his own actions.
