this episode REALLY benefits from not being part of a Justice League show. Seeing the swapped versions of D-list characters helps legitimize them in this show (especially Red Tornado, given his fate). Also, despite being aimed at a younger audience than the 90's show, refusing to properly reveal the Joker's face showed they did trust the audience. Stuff like that is why Brave and the Bold holds up so well.
Yeah for all those reasons I legitimately loved this episode and it remains one of my favorites even as an adult. I found the Red Hood adaptation so interesting, and as a kid fresh off the 90s Animated Series who only knew Joker as a gangster I gotta say even this morality swapped backstory was much more interesting compared to what they depicted and alluded to there even if it was mainly a burton influence compromise. (Also was a nice surprise to see you pop up here, love your vids as well!)
@@Shift_SaltTrue,an interesting idea to have the Joker or rather the man underneath the mask was a hero and his will power is a what stops him from going insane.

The slightly more subdued laugh Jeff Bennett does for Red Hood kinda reminds me of his laugh for the Creeper in The New Batman Adventures. The fact that his manic voice for Creeper sounds nothing like his voice for Joker really speaks volumes for his range.
I’ve been rewatching the show myself and it’s made me really appreciate a lot of the voice actors, especially Jeff Bennett. I like his take on Joker, but my favorite performance of his so far in the show has been as Captain Marvel/Shazam.

I love this episode mainly for having such an interesting take on a good guy, Joker, since using the red hood and him fighting against the insanity is again a much more interesting take on Joker
That would have actually been a good twist for the joker 2 movie. (If it was made by actual comic fans) jokers actually trying to control his insanity and have the twist at the end be the story takes place in earth 3. Maybe a shot of Bruce becoming owl man at the end
I dont think Red Hood fought his insanity. He's not insane and doesnt have any impulses. He's just disfigured and has a laughing tic. Its basically saying that Joker's "one bad day" excuse is still bs and if he wanted to be a good guy he still could. Joker uses it as an excuse to be bad but Red Hood doesnt see it as an excuse to stop being good.
Plus if you saw his backstory it’s a reverse play on the joker origin story as instead of being accidentally fell into a tank of acid, he was purposely threw into the tank of acid by Owl man, which gives him even more motivation to not break and fight for justice.
I love the scene of Red Hood laughing before reining himself in, it really captures the feeling of him beginning to crack before suddenly having a moment of realisation and refocusing himself
My favorite moment in the episode was where Batman gave Red Hood an earpiece, meaning he has to remove his hood to put it in, so he says, "I have to warn you, I'm not much to look at." And we get the face reveal... so well done. Also, I'd absolutely read a Red Hood ongoing comic, about this version of the character.
The Brave and the Bold is such an underrated show. I feel the problem with DC is that many of its stories (even with all of the reboots) are too large to digest. But BATB managed to sell you on histories of characters like Joker (via his counterpart) while not feeling bloated. Speaking of this Joker, I would love to see more of this "Red Hood" in the comics. One who didn't crack under the pressure of what Owl Man forced onto him.
Another thing that gave this Joker reveal weight was up until this point in the series, we actually hadn't seen what Brave and the Bold Joker would look like. So we saw his alternate version first in this 2 parter before the episode that properly introduced him in a topsy turvy team up episode. This was a really good breakdown video, I hadn't thought about how it's shows Batmans character in how he actually isn't as good at pretending to be evil as he thinks he is.
Its the fact that while Batman may brood and be serious, that doesn't really suggest evilness. Owlman has a sleazy, cocky element to him, sorta like the Bruce Wayne playboy persona Batman puts on, although its genuine for Owlman, showing another reversal.
This episode was my first encounter with earth 3 as a concept and the red hood moniker as a whole. And even now I think the red hood in this episode was such a cool character that I’m always disappointed that he’s not really a thing in the comics
What makes this version of Redhood/Joker’s backstory interesting is it’s a reverse play on the joker origin story as instead of being accidentally fell into a tank of acid, he was purposely threw into the tank of acid by Owl man the same man that murder his family, which gives him even more motivation to not break and fight for justice.
I know it goes further into it next episode, but I always thought it was interesting how good guy Red Hood was technically the first appearance of the Joker in this show.
I just binge watched the Brave and Bold series, I forgot how much I loved it. Being born in the 50s I grew up a Silver Age DC fan and this is absolutely packed with call backs. Highly recommended for any DC Silver Age fans.
I love these episodes of The Brave and The Bold! This and Crisis on Two Earths molded my thoughts that Earth 3 isn’t just the Earth of evil versions of characters, but the Earth where the villains on the main reality found hope and escaped the dark road that would turn them into villains. I love the origin for Red Hood, and I wish that it was comic canon.
yeah, earth 3 is at its worst when its just "evil batman and friends" and at its strongest when its a full role reversal where you get to root for the usual villains
@@thesatelliteslickers907 I'll be honest, at some points I prefer the Crime Syndicate versions of the JL over the main ones. I mean, Owlman's design and personality is just cold, Ultraman actually feels like the strongest member, Johnny Quick doesn't have any weird Speed Force connection/powers, Power Ring makes more sense as a name and Superwoman has a cool design.
In my own personal OPINION, Brave and the Bold had the best version of Earth - 3. When entering the other world, it feels like there's actual history between each character. Redhood is the Joker but there's obviously a clear difference between how they view their disfigured faces. While Batman assumed that Owlman is just a more ruthless and closed-off version of himself, it turns out Owlman is just extremely petty guy. Even with a character that only has a few lines like Blue Arrow, you can sense that he has history with Owlman. Whether it's the same as Batman and Green Arrow's rivalry is up for debate. My personal favorite was Silver Cyclone because unlike Red Tornado who sees humanity as admirable, Cyclone sees it as something unattainable and therefore unneeded. Earth 3 is completely different from the universe that we know, but Brave and Bold made it feel like an actual genuine world with its own story and history.
@@xstation6445 that is literally a thing from a comic. There's a comic where joker goes sane. And his name is Joseph Kerr. And there's a scene where batman is at the bat computer and slowly removes the letters to figure out that he's the joker.
The alternate Plastic Man had a great color swap. I also loved the joke that with Red Tornado, no matter how much damage his head survived where as with Silver Cyclone, his head is the first thing to go.
Brave and the Bold is an absolute must watch for any DC fan or even just anyone looking to get into it. Yeah, it has some of that Silver Age cheese to it, but not only is it very much intentional, it adds to the charm and makes the darker & more serious moments stick out. The Joker being the Red Hood in an alternate universe is honestly just a cool concept. The scene where he's looking at himself in the mirror and stops himself *just short* of going into a full Joker cackle is masterfull. Jeff Bennet did a phenomenal job and I feel like he's somewhat underrated as a Joker voice.

Having an episode where Batman was able to team up with the Joker - the Joker of all people - an actually make it legit was one of those key things that solidified my love of the series.

My gripe with this episode has always been that I wish the other evil counterparts had more interesting designs, instead of feeling like palette swaps. Since it's at least Owlman had a different cowls and color layout than Batman.
Another great review! Love this episode, not just one of my favorite episodes of B:BATB but one of my favorite Earth-Three/3/2 stories in general, especially adore the twist on having the good version of the Joker as the Red Hood, wish the comics would adapt that into a version of Earth 3 again eventually.
This is one of my favourite episodes, definitely the one that made me decide the show was worth watching and thank goodness for that. "Brave and the Bold" is fantastic.
I remember coming home from school and being visibly disturbed by this episode. My friends wanted to play superheros and I remember not wanting to. As a kid, the idea of heart-of-gold heroes becoming monsters really openend my eyes to a duality I didn't understand yet. It made me wonder "what did this to make you want to be this way?" Thank you for reminding me of this show and episode. I needed this
Batman facing a villain called Owl Man, may be a call- back to the 1939 episode of 'the Shadow Radio Show' called "Danger in the Dark" where the Shadow faced a foe called the Owl, whose super-hearing allows him to overcome the Shadows stealth cloaking ability. The Shadow was voiced by Orson Welles. ( Pre "Citizen Kane".)
I absolutely love this episode. I'm always a sucker for alternate universe/evil counterparts episodes in shows and this two-parter is a really good example of one. I particularly love the take on the alternate version of the Joker, with him still using the Red Hood moniker.
In the killing Joke they said the red hood wasn’t actually this criminal mastermind but rather a meat shield they dress up as their boss This made the Joker to seem more like an average Joe instead of always being a criminal mastermind

Pretty sure I've said this in comments and replies to comments on your channel multiple times before, but it especially bears repeating given that you've now actually covered this episode of Batman: TBATB: I love the Red Hood heroic alternate Joker concept and I've wished for years to see him in the comics for a team up.
I think this episode was what really sold me on Brave and the Bold when I was younger. I watched a few previous episodes but this one knocked it out of the park.
I remember this episode from when I watched it as a kid, and I love its version of a heroic Joker that uses the Red Hood alias instead of something like the jester. I still remember the scene when he’s first shown his chemical disfigurement

This episode had introduced me to the classic Red Hood persona, and I’ve liked the design ever since. I’ve always thought that it’s kind of a shame that it doesn’t really appear outside of some versions of Joker’s backstory, because I think the dome helmet looks really cool.
So he must have made a deal with an angel And got token down by a time traveling owl man, an evil jason blood, and a consulting criminal sherlock homes
I liked this episode. This series overall was always something to look forward to for a team up. (When it still meant something) I did like seeing the Red Hood in this episode. It was a fun concept to play with. There's still different things that could be done.
I am very grateful to this series, it was the one that introduced me to many other DC heroes (before that, Russian TV only showed series about Batman, Superman and the Justice League, but without a sequel Justice League Unlimited). A separate plus is that Batman from this series was voiced by the same voice actor as Batman from Nolan's films (who voiced many other characters, such as Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Aidan Pearce from Watch Dogs and many, many other characters)
Loved ❤ these episodes... I can't wait for your part two... Great video love ❤️ your work 😺
I also can't help but think Red Hood's throwing spade having the "X" in it was a purposeful nod to Teen Titans's Red X character who I 100% believe was DC doing a test run of Jason returning to see how much people would like it. It feels like part of an interesting throughline that I've noticed where they're all weirdly connected: - The Reaper: Main suit color is red with a hood-cloak/cape-combo - The Phantasm: Has Reaper's gauntlet scythe, grim reaper motif, hood-cloak/cape-combo, someone from Bruce's past come back to "haunt him" (not literally or was the aim for Phantasm but still does the same effect for most of the movie) - Red X: Has Phantasm's tattered suit look with it mostly black with a grey secondary color, the Reaper's grim reaper motif with the same skull mask design with no "jaw", one of his gadgets being wrist mounted razor blades (not exactly gauntlet scythe but still), & a possible ID being Jason coming back somehow - Red Hood (B&tB): Has a red "X" on the throwing spade that's similar in design to Red X's...well..."X's" - Red Hood (Jason): Same bit with Red X of using a red titled alter ego name to hide his identity and Jason being a possible candidate for who it was before it was revealed (wasn't revealed with Red X, but I'm confidant in saying it was Jason there too, with the added bit of "Jason was actually the first Robin, with their personalities somewhat switching, where Dick in the show is a lot more serious and slightly violent like Jason's modern depictions, and Jason on the flip-side was the more chill calm one like Nightwing")
I love this two parter! Great Story! Great Characters! on the subject of Blue Bowman's hair it could also reference to the Golden Age/Earth 2 Green Arrow also had Brown Hair.
I remember this was my favorite episode as a kid. I didn’t understand ANYTHING since it was my first ever Batman cartoon? But I loved it anyway. Both parts

My gripe with this episode has always been that I wish the other evil counterparts had more interesting designs, instead of feeling like palette swaps. Since it's at least Owlman had a different cowls and color layout than Batman.
I agree. But I get it. New designs are money. Pallets swapping is assets reuse and saves money.
Technically Owlman does have an "inverse" color swap to Batman, the grey and blue.
@gameinguy yeah but there's actual layers instead of swapping Green for Blue, Blue for Red, Red for Blueish Silver, even the "Heroes" had muted swaps
More costume 2, less color 2.
I really enjoyed the heroic Red Hood from this story and I wish we could have seen more of him.
Who has the coolest evil alternate?
Owl Man is usually the best due to getting the most focus.
Red Beetle and Blue Bowman. Creepy Jamie and overly dark colored wearing Ollie? Nah, man
Owlman is the probably the most accessible Batman evil alternative, while Nemesis is the ultimate Batman evil alternative.
Ultraman has a lot of potential I'd like to see used
Personally id say the red hood because the way the 2 parter compares both him to the joker is really cool.
Some of my favorite episodes of BTBATB. I just love alternate earths where heroes are villains and villains are heroes. Can't wait for the next video.
It made me wonder "what did this to make you want to be this way?"
Thank you for reminding me of this show and episode.
This is one my favorite episode, espically Red Hood scene torture able to snap back.
Favorite swap Scarlet Beetle, Gentleman Ghost and others villain.
Having that Silver Age lighthearted overlay allowed them to get away with a the occasional darker moment because they knew when to stop.
Red Hood having a strong will was cool af to me as a kid
I never knew the joker being the red hood was an older thing, I thought it was a more recent thing.
Almost literally has always been there
@@popeye697 I mean I didn't know it was thing before killing joke
In the killing Joke they said the red hood wasn’t actually this criminal mastermind but rather a meat shield they dress up as their boss
This made the Joker to seem more like an average Joe instead of always being a criminal mastermind
@@Handlelesswithme they also brought that up the joker year one story thing they did earlier this year, I think. I really need to get around to actually reading that comic lol
@@matman329 it’s been a thing since the 50s
Love how silver cyclone just reassure us the GREAT HERO Red Tornado CHOOSE to become
_Let's not forget this is the same Red Tornado that killed his own son in order to save the ENTIRE PLANET_
I love red hoods tuxedo design ngl
"Chill in the Night" was also a very serious and dark episode, and ironically, one the best of the whole series.
I will forever maintain that the Injustice League's best appearance will always be in Lego DC Super Villains AND I WILL DIE ON THAT HILL
You mean in Lego Dc supervillains right?
@@keithharrissuwignjo2460 I mean if we want to be pedantic about this it has a hyphen: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_DC_Super-Villains
8:18 gentlemen ghost look sick and now his name makes sense lol
The only "Earth Three Joker" I actually like, tbh
I liked how in the end, to take care of the bomb they just send it to a zombie earth. No living creatures there if they're zombies! (At least... that's how I remember happened...)
Was watching this yesterday and hoped you'd make a video on it lol manifestation fr! Love this two parter BATB really has some gems
10:00 As a kid, the implications of that line went _completely_ over my head, and it took me years to realize what Scarlet Scarab meant.
Pretty sure I've said this in comments and replies to comments on your channel multiple times before, but it especially bears repeating given that you've now actually covered this episode of Batman: TBATB:
I love the Red Hood heroic alternate Joker concept and I've wished for years to see him in the comics for a team up.
This episode spawned a life long obsession with Owlman as a concept that I still have to this very day
I really wish earth 3 in the comics used this version of joker/red hood. His name (Jokester) and costume never screamed hero to me.
I think this episode was what really sold me on Brave and the Bold when I was younger. I watched a few previous episodes but this one knocked it out of the park.
May I have a heart of a true hero line cracks me up every time
Excited for part 2!
This show is criminally underappreciated.
"No evil alternate for Snapper Carr."
That's because he is the evil one...
Clapper Snarr
Can't wait for you to cover the next episode when Owlman disguises himself as golden age Batman 👏
I remember this episode from when I watched it as a kid, and I love its version of a heroic Joker that uses the Red Hood alias instead of something like the jester. I still remember the scene when he’s first shown his chemical disfigurement
This is one of my favorite episodes. Can't wait for part 2.
I absolutely loved this episode, one of the best and was actually my introduction to The Red Hood before I'd ever seen Under The Red Hood.
And I thought it was so cool as a kid, and still love it now years later.
4:30That is a cool idea .
Jeff Bennett has great range
This was a great two-parter, I love all of the callbacks to the various versions of Earth-Three!
I want that Joker laugh for my ringtone, lol!
Great episode. Nice play on how even the Joker could be a hero in another time and place. The colors are really good.
Hi Sasha I love your content so much ❤❤❤❤ fun fact when i was a kid this was one of the first episodes i watched and it served as not only my introduction to dc but to the multiverse concept.
I love this series and I ALWAYS click on your videos when you cover it.
I really enjoyed this episode as a kid also because i also watched crisis on two earths which made me love owlman but made me ask why isn't superwoman (seriously that is a weird name for evil wonder woman) and johnny quick and power ring and ultraman (the dc one not the Japanese one) there as well
This episode had introduced me to the classic Red Hood persona, and I’ve liked the design ever since. I’ve always thought that it’s kind of a shame that it doesn’t really appear outside of some versions of Joker’s backstory, because I think the dome helmet looks really cool.
Triple Bs the animated series is awesomeness!!!
Great video thank you Casually Comics !!
Joseph Kurr has to be some sort of pseudonym.
I love that even Gentleman Ghost got a heroic counterpart
So he must have made a deal with an angel
And got token down by a time traveling owl man, an evil jason blood, and a consulting criminal sherlock homes
I liked this episode. This series overall was always something to look forward to for a team up. (When it still meant something) I did like seeing the Red Hood in this episode. It was a fun concept to play with. There's still different things that could be done.
I love Batman Brave and the Bold. And this episode was fantastic. I love the alternate Joker reveal.
Yay!
Jeff Bennett is an underrated Joker
This was the episode that introduced me to Owl Man and Red Hood when it first aired
Probably my favorite episode of the show
Loved ❤ these episodes... I can't wait for your part two...
I never really watched this Batman 🦇 series (a I was a BTAS / Kiven Conroy or nothing girl...lol) but I did see these episodes (some how lol) & I believe it was the 1st time I meet / saw owl man🦉how ever I think owl man🦉really only works as a young brother to Bruce but that's just me.
Great video love ❤️ your work 😺
I also can't help but think Red Hood's throwing spade having the "X" in it was a purposeful nod to Teen Titans's Red X character who I 100% believe was DC doing a test run of Jason returning to see how much people would like it. It feels like part of an interesting throughline that I've noticed where they're all weirdly connected:
- The Reaper: Main suit color is red with a hood-cloak/cape-combo
- The Phantasm: Has Reaper's gauntlet scythe, grim reaper motif, hood-cloak/cape-combo, someone from Bruce's past come back to "haunt him" (not literally or was the aim for Phantasm but still does the same effect for most of the movie)
- Red X: Has Phantasm's tattered suit look with it mostly black with a grey secondary color, the Reaper's grim reaper motif with the same skull mask design with no "jaw", one of his gadgets being wrist mounted razor blades (not exactly gauntlet scythe but still), & a possible ID being Jason coming back somehow
- Red Hood (B&tB): Has a red "X" on the throwing spade that's similar in design to Red X's...well..."X's"
- Red Hood (Jason): Same bit with Red X of using a red titled alter ego name to hide his identity and Jason being a possible candidate for who it was before it was revealed (wasn't revealed with Red X, but I'm confidant in saying it was Jason there too, with the added bit of "Jason was actually the first Robin, with their personalities somewhat switching, where Dick in the show is a lot more serious and slightly violent like Jason's modern depictions, and Jason on the flip-side was the more chill calm one like Nightwing")
Both parts
