To me there is no "maybe" about it! This is the BEST Cello Concerto. And there are so many great versions of it, that I really enjoy looking for the next one that I hadn't heard before. I love the way Dvorak uses the whole orchestra, even for a concerto. Some people consider this to be his 10th Symphony.
30:33 Rostropovich "breaths out" the sound with such enthusiasm. You can even hear he breaths in again at 30:38 again to go to the next passage. What a play. What a great concerto.
I have listened to Dvořák’s cello concerto countless times by many cellists such as du Pré, Yo-Yo Ma,, Maisky, and many more and none of them come close to this performance by Rostropovich. His intonation, harmony, and emphasis into this concerto is phenomenal, he doesn’t waste a single inch on the bow, he plays with such perfection. As a cellist I aspire to play like him.

what I like most about this fantastic performance is the orchestra led by conductor giulini... definitely my favorite performance from an orchestra of this piece.
+Cezar Lacrone amongst dead cellists, I'd vote for Casals. The question of who is the greatest cellist ever, is unanswerable. It's a subjective judgement. There is no objective truth here.
+Cezar Lacrone It's almost sacrilegious to suggest he was not the greatest. Before him there were a lot fewer cello concertos and the cello was not considered much of a concerto instrument. His ability to project sound with a full orchestra and his genius caused many great composers to write cello concertos.
Nathan Mills I think the list after 1950 is actually longer than the one before 1950. Two concertos by Shostakovich, Penderecky, Lutoslowski, Dutilleux, Prokofiev - just to name a few. I think the point is that composers of the 20th century began to put a cello concerto on their to-do list after hearing Rostropovich's performances. The cello is probably the least capable of all orchestral instruments to be heard above the orchestra, but he proved it could be done, even with the lush orchestration employed by 20th century composers.

3:50 makes me happy! I have the Rostropovich/Giulini EMI CD of this work, recorded just days before or after this video production. It is my favorite recording of this concerto because Giulini doesn’t just accompany Rostropovich. He presents an orchestral vision that fully complements that of the great soloist. For instance, 3:50 as I mentioned. This beautiful, dance-like flourish is a passage that I always love, an early promise of the glory that is to come. It is always full of joy, though here it has a graceful lilt that is unique from all other performances. This performance has several such moments, and from beginning to end shows complete mastery in the relationships between the solo cello and orchestra.
The start of the third movement (30:01) is already one of my favorite moments in classical music - the build up to the solo, the triangle, the regal cello entrance, just amazing. And Rostropovich just goes full send in this section, grace and power. It's a little lighter on tempo than other recordings, but he is just so sweeping and majestic in this recording, every note sings. His little trilling harmonies in the second solo entrance are incredible, I'd have to go back and listen to some other versions, but I'm not sure I've heard that in other recordings. Just a wonderful recording of this piece!
I likes this the best among all other records I heard of this concerto by M. Rostropovich and/or other excellent cellists - The music has been well taken (recorded), the sound of cell is expressively full and the orchestra backs it up all the way thru....
I truly appreciated this recording of a legend playing a legendary concerto. As a cellist, I appreciated every moment musically, the excellent balance between the orchestra and soloist. As a videographer/photographer, I appreciated the sheer number of camera angles that were covered with this recording. The cellist in me (or any other cellist, I'm sure) would have made a few different selections in the final edit (there were several spots where nothing at all would have been lost to keep the camera on the cello for a few more seconds, especially some very technical sections where it wasn't necessary to cut at that moment to another instrument - and a view of the fingers instead of the bow would have been immensely appreciated by all viewers), but I still love everything that they did or tried to do. I don't think many video editors have the luxury of musician at their side during the process, though I believe this editor was either very experienced or had some help knowing where to feature which instruments. Great job on all accounts! Love it!!
I agree, except for Jacqueline. She studied with Rostropovich in the 60's, who had said she was "the only cellist of the younger generation that could equal and overtake my own achievement." After that though, yes. Nobody else.

There’s one recording on YuTube of Yo-yo Ma playing this same piece in which his dialogue with the violin in the last movement was absolutely breathtaking and sublime, and more impressive than Rostropovich did in this one.

What is extraordinary is that Rostropovich made two thoroughly remarkable recordings of this concerto. This is one of them. The other, in 1969, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Each, in their way, a music lover’s dream.

I love this particular performance. Of course, Rostropovich was always sublime. But the whole thing is just beautiful, visually and otherwise.
phenomenal. The fingers are heaven sent.
Magnifique interprétation , formidable Mstislav Rostropovich ,merci
The wonderfulness of this performance isoff the charts
What is extraordinary is that Rostropovich made two thoroughly remarkable recordings of this concerto. This is one of them. The other, in 1969, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Each, in their way, a music lover’s dream.
Repeating the main theme at 35:33 reveals the most of the performer's character...
those dislike clickers must have up-side down monitor and thought "why this beautiful music has so much dislikes?"
My beloved Rastropovich forever.I remember his last concert in Yerevan before mooved from USSR.
Grande Giuliani e Maestro .......sarai sempre migliore.
Carlo Maria Giulini
I really love this Concert.
Speechless of the expressionism at 20:11.
More cello concert have been written for this man to premier than ANY other cellist in history. No scratch that ANY OTHER PERFORMER IN HISTORY
OMG How i love this! Great technique and passion!
