In 1974, when I was a teenager, I heard Maestro Rostropovich play this in Carnegie Recital Hall in NYC. I sat in the front row, directly in front of him. The performance was sublime, majestic, and tender. Every note had a separate meaning, and they joined together in celebration of life’s sweetness. I was transported.
I heard his last concert in 1974 when I was 29, before his leaving the Soviet Union. He gives his last concert for his favorite listeners in Yerevan Armenia. He perfomance his programm so magically,I will never forget it.
Slava was short for Mstislav Ristropovich and Benjie was Benjamin Britten. They recorded this together and Haydn's wonderful cello concerto in C together
I can honestly say: the music lover inside of me cannot live without this recording. Ever since I was exposed to its multifacetted perfection back in the 90s. To this day I wonder: how can such a beautiful thing even exist.

I am listening to this immediately following another YT performance, this by Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky from about 2 years ago. I've never heard this piece before (although I'm a great fan and admirer of Schubert) and I found their performance to be lifeless, mechanical, and--surprisingly given the composer--unmelodic. I thought it was simply a dull piece by a great composer, so was going to write if off. A second hearing (this performance by Britten/Rostropovich) is from another world, in another sphere. They beautifully create the melodies that I am familiar with, having many of Schubert's recordings. It's brilliantly played. It has life, beauty, richness, and cohesiveness. I've never heard Benjamin Britten perform before, but his playing here is wonderful. And, of course, Rostropovich is a nonpareil.
This is indeed a reference recording for this piece of work, and the only music that was prior unknown to me, but upon listening to the first time in a CD shop 20 years ago, and prompted me to immediately bought the CD. It was under Decca Legends and I still have the disk, although these days CD shops are becoming a thing of the past!

I was fortunate to attend one of his last performances in Kennedy Center, we ended up at the "quire" section for some mysterious reason; facing him and at the back of orchestra staring at him all along the performance as a conductor!
Merci...!
No version, none, has equaled, or even gotten to the level of this interpretation. It´s so precisely Schubertian, so deep that many many years will pass until anyone gets to fit this shoes, that if anyone gets to. Amazing Britten-Rostropovich. Thanks for posting!
This piece by Shubert and played by Masters of the Piano and Cello is truly Sublime...feeding pleasure to every crevice and corner of the mind...Just Wonderful!!
This is one of the first records I ever bought (or maybe received) of cello music. I never could imagine mastering the instrument to this degree (nor did I), but I’m an Olympic-level appreciator of Maestro Rostropovich!
Without presumption I think I have a certain confidence with Britten, Rostropovich and with all the enormous things they left us, but what I learned here is beautiful. Other things, precious things. Thanks.
Perhaps the most delightful and satisfying recording of this work Britten's piano playing was a revelation when I first found this recording in our School of Music Library many years ago and of course -the Master cellist Rostropvich! Thank you for making it available.
The most deeply beautiful and moving performance of this gorgeous sonata that I have heard . It does my heart good. Sorely needed in these dark times. Thank you.
Beautiful! One of my fondest memories to this day is my 1st ever orchestral concert as a child where maestro Rostroprovich conducted the US National Symphony. Many years later, l made the acquaintance of John Marcellus, who had been principle trombone of the National Symphony at the time, and even got to work with him a little bit. It's difficult to put into words how much l adore the great performances of Rostroprovich on cello from before l was even born! And all of that says nothing about my boundless adoration of Britten.
which is absoluletly believable according to those two exceptional artists of their century. i own this recording for almost 30 yrs and it is the best recording of Schuberts' "Arpeggione" i know so far. Rostro isn't reborn yet. Do you also know the legendary recording of the Schuberts' Piano Trio in B major from 1928 with Thibaud-Casals-Cortot?
There are so many interpretations that roll along at faster tempi and louder dynamics: popular favorites on the radio that ruined the sonata for me. In the hands of Britten and Rostropovich it's an entirely different piece and I'm so happy to hear this work played with such subtlety and understanding for the first time!
As a greatest songwriter, Schubert made about 700 songs for Vocal, Piano, Cello, Trios, and Quartets in addition to 9 symphonies and others. His short life was full of musics with romantic melodies.
Never heard this piece before but I doubt anyone could beat this two. Loved every minute and how precious to hear a giant like Rostropovich when Putin is trashing Russia. Bravo!!!’❤
Absolutely amazing performance of this marvelous masterpiece! One of my all time favorite recordings at all. Great sound remastering! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️🙏

I can only imagine this would have been a life changing experience.

I swear this story changes every time

14:44 this arppeggio in context (14:16) always makes me cry. Something about the timbre
Such a great surprise, having not heard or known of this Schubert treasure!
Maestro rostropovich…
He was truly musician.
It owes as much or more to Britten who introduced it to Rostro, who never played it with any other pianist.

I heard that episode for the first time.
It is interesting!
Britten was not only pianist, but also great composer.
Especially if you capitalize his name.
Thanks for the interesting notes in the subtitles
This is an outstanding gem of a recording. Both artists at the top of their bent, an extraordinary match. Thank you this was wonderful.
There are so many interpretations that roll along at faster tempi and louder dynamics: popular favorites on the radio that ruined the sonata for me. In the hands of Britten and Rostropovich it's an entirely different piece and I'm so happy to hear this work played with such subtlety and understanding for the first time!
Best channel on YT. Hands down. Thank you.
As a greatest songwriter, Schubert made about 700 songs for Vocal, Piano, Cello, Trios, and Quartets in addition to 9 symphonies and others. His short life was full of musics with romantic melodies.
Absolutely transported , the play between the piano and cello, the sublime sounds, wonderfully re- mastered. Thank you 💚
Great performance for sensory Soul. Thank you so much.
It doesn’t get much better than this ! In fact to listen to this is to be is heaven !
Rostropovich & Britten -- quite the pairing.
Century's recording ! Thank you very much !
Never heard this piece before but I doubt anyone could beat this two.
Loved every minute and how precious to hear a giant like Rostropovich when Putin is trashing Russia. Bravo!!!’❤
BEST SCHUBERT
ARPEGGIONE SONATA
PERFORMANCE!
THE MOST REFINED
ARTISTRY!
No, they just happen to be playing the music; most others just play the notes.
24:25 - 24:45 chokes me up every time. Such a lovely recording.
This is such a beautiful piece of music played superbly! Thanks for sharing!

A jewel a master piece never heard before
amazing--I'm not sure I've ever heard Britten as a performer. Rostropovich of course I have heard. he is one of the greats.
Thank you. The very best sound of this magnificent performance.
Insanely great remastering!!! 👂🏼😘👂🏼
Absolutely amazing performance of this marvelous masterpiece! One of my all time favorite recordings at all. Great sound remastering! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️🙏
They had me from the very first bar. You just can't beat this with a stick!
OMG!!!This is the Best D821.
Maravillosa interpretación .
schubert, the GOAT
This is great! Perenyi + Schiff is best! And, thank you to John Williams for his generous (albeit flawed) guitar arrangement! Long live Schubert!
Amazing!!! Wow..,.!! Wonderful!!!!!
I have listened to this music many times! But this recording is the best! Fantastic! Thank you very much!
had no idea what a lovely pianist BB was...
Grazie Bravi
Meraviglioso
Magnificent!!!
Rostropovich was a dirty , disgusting old man. You do not know what you are talking about.

thank's
thanks so much for the background.... it broadens the enjoyment considerably... brings it alive... Thanks 😊 🙏
This was my choice too!
Thank you.
Masterly 🌷
Thank you. Two geniuses.
