The 1st thing I noticed holding this 500mm lens was how light and small it was. Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is the smallest and lightest of the lightweight lenses in the market at a similar focal length. It is about 95 grams lighter than the Nikkor 500mm F5.6 PF F-mount lens and 20-25 grams lighter than the Nikkor 600mm F6.3 PF Z-mount lens. These 2 lenses are the direct contenders for this Sigma 500mm lens. This was made possible thanks to the magnesium alloy and metal construction making this lens solid and sports-worthy! I like how well it holds with a thinner frame on one side and has this anti-topple design on the other side with the huge front element. Speaking of the front element, it has a 95mm filter thread which mostly no one uses. The front of the lens though, has a rubber finish for grip which I like as it also helps avoid scuffs when placed upright. The lens hood has a screw-on design for mounting and I do not like it at all as it takes more time to mount and the need to use both hands, unlike the ones without. But on the flip side, the edge of the lens hood has the rubber finish again, provides grip and prevents the hood from scuffing when placed up-right. It has the usual buttons on one side such as the AF/MF Switch, Optical Image stabilization switch, Focus limit switch, and a custom switch. On the other side though, there is an unusual ring that none of the other tele-lens ever had. That is the aperture ring. This aperture ring can be clicked or de-clicked. Looking at the construction and buttons, it is very clear that this lens is made to be comfortably handheld and to be used for both photos and videos.
With all these tricks up its sleeve, does it deliver the image quality a prime tele-lens should, or does it also come with sacrifices? With so much weight and size reduction, one would think that this lens might’ve cheaped on the glasses, by replacing the glasses with plastic lenses. Sigma used all glasses for its lens elements and it does show in the image quality. With the short amount of time, I played with this lens, I can say that the images are really good with good contrast and sharpness, even when I shot the subject at 1/100th of a second. This also shows how good the image stabilization is. My overall 1st impression of this lens is “It is unique”. It is unique in more ways than I can think of and I wish to have this lens all the time in my bag for its size and weight in this focal length. I am extremely impressed with Sigma releasing such an awesome lens and I am looking forward to knowing more about what Sigma is going to bring to the camera and lens industry. Thank you for watching the video and have a great day!
