Compact, as you suggested, is a very subjective term when applied to handguns. For example, my CZ P10c has a 4 inch barrel. That is about the maximum size I feel comfortable carrying concealed. Yet, the designation c means the manufacturer considers it a compact. If that's the standard, the results with the baby rock are exactly what Remington was aiming for. Great video that also highlights this topic
Seems like Paul always knows what i wanna see! I recently bought some of this Remington Compact Handgun ammo, and wondered exactly what the real world effectiveness of it would be. Paul! I'd love to see a video on Soft Point vs Hollow Point ammunition as it pertains to hunting mostly, but self defense would be great too. Seems like inevitably when I go to camp I get chided on my choice and I have a feeling many others would benefit from this :) Great video as always, thank you!

Got my LCP loaded with the Ruger branded ARX ammo. Makes it so easy to control and almost eliminates how snappy the LCP is. I would love to see how it performs against the meat target.
The trigger may be much easier, and it does have more of a palm swell, but the trigger on the original LCP makes it a better pocket gun choice for me....just my preference.
I've been carrying the Lehigh Xtreme Defender rounds from Underwood in my LCP. I'd like to see Paul review some solid bullet options like these against "good" hollow points in .380.
@@elsullo2 I dont conceal carry so my LCP is just a range gun/ around the house pocket pistol. Thanks so much for demonstrating the performance of the Hornady Critical Defense from an LCP in the meat target. This is effectively my combination of firearm and ammunition for my deep-concealment option - I carry an LCP II, which has the same barrel length.

Part of the problem is that we don't have a solid definition of "compact" when it comes to handguns. There are guns larger than both of those that manufacturers are still calling "compact". There isn't really a set guideline for handgun sizes we just let the manufacturers decide.
It's the same with shoes sizes, and clothing sizes in general...no real industry standard. But, in the case of handguns, a 6" barrel is not compact. So, it would have to be less than 6 inches. I consider a compact handgun to be around 4". I consider the 2" barrel to be sub-compact. It would be unrealistic to expect high performance from a 2" barrel, such as hollow points expanding, unless they start loading ammo with powder that burns entirely (or almost) in that 2 inches, which I'm not sure they make that kind of gun powder. I wonder how fast black powder burns....showing my ignorance.
@@mu99ins i would definitely say clothes and shoe sizes are a little more uniform. The fact that both a ruger lcp, and a glock 19 are considered compact by their manufacturer is ridiculous. The two are nowhere near the same size. I personally wouldn't call a 4 inch barrel compact. Most full sized handguns fall in the four inch range (ppq xd many glocks p320) five inch is usually a long slide, or extra large gun. (G34 q5match ect. ect.) It's when you get to the smaller guns it all gets tricky. A G19 is about the same size as a G43 until you consider width. I usually call it sub compact when you switch to single stack (at least in 9mm or .380acp) and maintain that compact size. In my mind a compact is a gun I can't get my pinky on without a mag extension. I usually put the lpc or similar sized pistols in its own category. Mouse gun/pocket pistol. They are much smaller than your average subcompact. The thing I find funny is that you can have two guns of nearly identical size and weight, mp shield 9mm and the glock 43, glock calls the 43 sub compact, smith calls the M&P compact. It makes it confusing and I often avoid the terms all together so that I don't have to argue.
@@Alex9501950 - A shirt size made in the orient may well be smaller than a shirt size made in America, but so few articles of clothing are made in America. They vary quite a bit. As somebody with extremely wide feet (4 7/8" at the ball of the foot), I know that a New Balance 4E can be wider than a competitor claiming their shoe is 6E. I know this by experience, and it's cost me plenty of money finding out. I talked with a shoemaker, whose family has been in the business for generations, and was a member of some national board of shoe standards, which I can't recall...it's been a quarter century since we had the conversation, and he said there are no enforceable standards in shoes. With firearms, we would have to determine the criteria, which is probably different from one gun maker to the next. You seem to associate, quite logically, that compactness refers to the overall dimensions of the firearm, and I associate it with barrel length. My prejudice is that any handgun with less than a 6" barrel is a compromise which sacrifices power for ease of carry, or compactness. I don't consider the prevalence of short barrelled handguns to be a factor in what should be called compact. I consider a snub-nosed revolver as something that is extreme, and called it sub-compact, but that's just opinion.

Excellent comparison information. I normally carry a LCP with Hornady Personal Defense ammo and the results you show confirm that is a good choice. Keep the quality videos coming!!!
Stay away from sig ammo imo, they haven’t been in the “ammo” game long enough. V-crown gets hung up in every thing I try it in and just ended up switching. Hornady for the win
That's what I feed my subcompact .40 with. It was cheap for premium defensive ammo when I got it, so even if it's no better than the regular Ultimate Defense, I'm still happy with it.
That was the Grand Champion winner in ShootingTheBull's exhaustive testing of the available self-defense loads a couple of years ago. Then came the expensive Underwood Extreme Defense bullet, looking impressive but awaiting real-world results...……………………….elsullo
Yeah, I love the .380, have no idea why, and I've watched TONS of videos on it and read on it and I even have shot into water to collect bullets and for people that want to carry .380 I only recommend either Hornady with the insert in the bullet or full metal jacket. Some like the Leahigh defense ammo and that's a good choice as well, but it's a bit pricey and not something for those that worry about over penetration.
I’ve watched all of paul’s videos comparing 380 and 9mm ammo. No, I don’t take notes but it seems to be that in terms of overall performance in a short 380, the hornady is always at least comparable and usually better than the hyped ammo. I don’t feel like keeping track of the “which ammo is marginally better in which gun.” I’ll pay for quality self defense ammo and shoot cheap stuff at the range. As our leader has noted repeatedly-- “Shoot good ammo in a good gun that you’re reasonably proficient with.” He obviously has extreme proficiency and could probably get away with shooting rubber bands at the bad guys. (Good idea for the meat target?) me-not so much.
@@CptainCrunch , Full metal jacket will work. A through and through hole in a person is a grievous wound. Two or three through and through holes are even more grievous.
Miner Blue ...and people who focus on ballistic gel tests forget how incapacitating a couple of broken ribs can be to a badguy. In my experience, FMJ striking bone transforms aggression to self-preservation quite rapidly.
The results of the FBI’s 1986 Miami firefight absolutely indicate that IMMEDIATE INCAPACITATION - which is both crucial and decisive in defensive encounters - almost certainly depends on the tenacity of the individual(s), not on the gravity of the wound(s) alone. While it is clear that damage to the CNS and the heart will rapidly and near-invariably terminate the fight, the two felons in Miami were hit six and twelve times (respectively), yet they murdered two Special Agents and wounded five others (before dying). Therefore, I’m most skeptical concerning “through and through” wounds, broken ribs, and so forth ensuring success in defensive encounters. To illustrate this, a untreated wound to the liver is extremely likely eventually to kill the assailant, but it may take considerable time to do so. In those minutes, the miscreant can do GREAT HARM to innocents. My points are simple: - some humans will give up easily, but other clearly will not; - if one’s defensive engagement happens to be with a indomitable, hardened individual, then broken ribs, through-and-through wounds, etc. may not be decisive within the required timeframe; therefore - I won’t depend on less than near-instantaneous incapacitation in life-threatening defensive scenarios.
Great review, Paul. I'm not a big fan of the .380, but, as you ably demonstrate, with the right arm and ammunition, it is a viable duo. Many years ago I owned a Colt 1908 .38 with a 3.7 inch barrel. With the old (now defunct) "Super-Vel" brand ammo, the results were surprisingly good. In fact FMJ ammo penetrated old (1950s) car bodies BETTER then Super-Vel 9mm HPs. Thanks for your time and energy in educating people on the upgrades in .380 ammo and barrel length differences - most reviewers don't take the time to review .380s this well. (As a life-long hunter / reloader - I'm now 71- and very amateur ammo tester, I appreciate all your vids and the practical nature of your personal evaluations. Thanks again! -Ray (from the mountains of SW Colorado)
The unreliable expansion is why I choose to carry Lehigh Defense Xtreme Penetrator solid copper ammo in my 380 - no expansion required to achieve great results. I do like the Hornady Critical Defense as a second choice though, so nice to see it perform well. Thanks for another great video Paul!

Like does the fact that ppl wear heavy coats and layers during the winter affect the performance of a bullet vs a person in light summer clothing? Iv been trying to find the answer but o cant find anything conclusive. If you have time could you speak on this? Maybe put a coat and jacket in front of the meat target to see if bullets open prematurely.

Baby rock so cute! Hornady seems to do pretty good in the short barrel! Great video as always! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
People dislike these videos because they can't watch anything objectively if they disagree. Love you Paul!
I was just thinking that I needed this vid. My wife's hungry gun thanks you.
Happy New Year Paul.
Here’s to a great new year
Seems like Paul always knows what i wanna see! I recently bought some of this Remington Compact Handgun ammo, and wondered exactly what the real world effectiveness of it would be. Since i don't have a chronograph, or a meat target. This was exceptional information as usual. Thanks Paul 👍😲 always look forward to your videos.
Time waits for no man, but she patiently waits for the next Paul Harrell video to drop, just like the rest of us.
I like the way Paul speeds up when naming the ammo he's using like those financial disclaimers on adverts. Clear enough to understand but fast enough to get what I consider 'fluff' out of the way. Disclaimer, I'm from the UK so specific firearm details mean little to me.
I think you need to get a tuxedo to test 380 ACP...
I have seen documentaries where a guy in a tux is a one shot wonder with a 380.
I love those documentaries. I think I have seen them all once or twice
If you test a .380 wearing a tux, does tedious chronograph testing then come with unusual Caviar? Or still, just the usual caveats?

Paul! I'd love to see a video on Soft Point vs Hollow Point ammunition as it pertains to hunting mostly, but self defense would be great too.
@@Alex9501950 - A shirt size made in the orient may well be smaller than a shirt size made in America, but so few articles of clothing are made
in America. They vary quite a bit. As somebody with extremely wide feet (4 7/8" at the ball of the foot), I know that a New Balance 4E can be wider
than a competitor claiming their shoe is 6E. I know this by experience, and it's cost me plenty of money finding out. I talked with a shoemaker,
whose family has been in the business for generations, and was a member of some national board of shoe standards, which I can't recall...it's been
a quarter century since we had the conversation, and he said there are no enforceable standards in shoes.
With firearms, we would have to determine the criteria, which is probably different from one gun maker to the next. You seem to associate,
quite logically, that compactness refers to the overall dimensions of the firearm, and I associate it with barrel length. My prejudice
is that any handgun with less than a 6" barrel is a compromise which sacrifices power for ease of carry, or compactness. I don't consider
the prevalence of short barrelled handguns to be a factor in what should be called compact. I consider a snub-nosed revolver as something that
is extreme, and called it sub-compact, but that's just opinion.

As our leader has noted repeatedly--
“Shoot good ammo in a good gun that you’re reasonably proficient with.” He obviously has extreme proficiency and could probably get away with shooting rubber bands at the bad guys. (Good idea for the meat target?) me-not so much.
@@CptainCrunch ,
Full metal jacket will work.
My points are simple:
- some humans will give up easily, but other clearly will not;
- if one’s defensive engagement happens to be with a indomitable, hardened individual, then broken ribs, through-and-through wounds, etc. may not be decisive within the required timeframe; therefore
- I won’t depend on less than near-instantaneous incapacitation in life-threatening defensive scenarios.

Great review, Paul. I'm not a big fan of the .380, but, as you ably demonstrate, with the right arm and ammunition, it is a viable duo. Many years ago I owned a Colt 1908 .38 with a 3.7 inch barrel. With
the old (now defunct) "Super-Vel" brand ammo, the results were surprisingly good. In fact FMJ ammo penetrated old (1950s) car bodies BETTER then Super-Vel 9mm HPs. Thanks for your time and energy in educating people on the upgrades in .380 ammo and barrel length differences - most reviewers don't take
the time to review .380s this well. (As a life-long hunter / reloader - I'm now 71- and very amateur ammo tester, I appreciate all your vids and the practical nature of your personal evaluations. Thanks again! -Ray (from the mountains of SW Colorado)
