I own a place way out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. I use that place for getting away from civilization, hunting, weapons training / practice. Walking around my place one evening, I see a man slinking through the brush. He does not see me. I took cover behind a tree. He is making his way towards my cabin. When he is in a small clearing, I said "HALT". He jumps, looks around, and can't figure where I am. I asked "Can I help you". A long pause, no answer. "You are trespassing." He lit out towards my front gate. I saw him hop the gate and head down the road. A bit later I heard a truck start and depart down the dirt road at a high speed. I had a single action Ruger 45LC on my hip. I now carry my AR-15 16" barrel rifle around when walking. What was he going to do? Rob the cabin? Probably. Things can get weird anywhere, anytime. Paul is right. Carry a handgun that can defend you.

The Glock model 29 chambered in 10mm is an excellent choice for a remote area because it's as light and compact as a standard 9mm carry sized gun but shoots a round powerful enough to stop a bear. You never know what you might run into out there whether it be a bad guy or a predator like a bear or a cougar. My favorite round for personal defense is Double Tap 135 gr. Hollow points. For predator protection 220 gr. Buffalo Bore hardcast lead will destroy pine 4x4 boards with ease.

    • @theeddorian
      @theeddorian 4 года назад +108

@@scockery The woods can be pretty wild and wooly not that far from civilization, maybe an hour's drive. In the late '70s I worked for one of the National Forests in California. Energy costs had gone up thanks to PG&E antics and and unemployment was really high. There had been a boom in "poaching" firewood. Now, at least back then, it was no big deal to cut wood in the forest. You stopped at the District Ranger Station, explained your intentions, and bought a pretty inexpensive permit. Then, as long as you didn't start taking down anything bigger than six inches or so, you could cut a quite a lot. They are still pretty cheap compared to buying cord wood commercially. Things became surreal out there with cord wood "pirates" simply picking a spot with trees they liked and starting to cut. There several sections (the 640-acre kind) where black oaks were completely wiped out. As the preferred wood became scarcer, the wood cutters started going armed, and would shoot at each other, passing Forest Service vehicles. and just about any thing they thought might interfere with their freedom to take whatever they wanted. As things became clearer, most of these guys were not there for cord wood for their use. They were out to haul away as much as they could for a profit. We were stopped by a badged ranger and told to report any cutting we saw but not to interact in any way. The day before, to entrepreneurs had gotten into a shootout and one had been wounded. The other guy was still at large and apparently cutting wood. Later we had to watch out for booby traps and armed guards around pot plantations, and not being "badged" employees, mere "seasonals," we were not allowed to carry on the job. Probably anyone that has worked in the woods has stories.

Back when I was 18 I used to go to an observatory at night to look at the stars, nebulae, galaxies etc.
It was a ways out of town and up a winding mountain road.
One night i came upon a car stopped with the hazards on.
Being a pretty good mechanic, i had a habit of helping people with car trouble so I was already focused on that when I stopped and got out.
It was at that point I noticed some debris had clearly been drug into the road to block the on-comming lane with the "broke down car" blocking my lane.
It would be nearly impossible for me to turn around on that narrow mountain road.
A lady steps out of the drivers side of the car and I ask if she needs help.
Right then a man comes out of the treeline above the road to my left.
He looks at me, his expression changed from somewhat menacing to sorta neutral.
    "Naw man, we're okay."
He gets in the car and pulls it forward so I can drive around.
Now, they may have just been cutting brush, in the dark, using a small car.
Or they were setting a trap for someone and i wasn't on the menu.
But I never forgot the way he startled me and particularly the facial expression he had when i first saw him, before it changed.
There were no cell phones in those days and no pay phones on that long dark road either.
When i came back down the mountain later, they were gone, the brush was on the side of the road.
I got chills as I passed by.

@@coolguy2475 a lot of really good deer rounds need faster, 1/8 is a good twist, 1/9 if you're only using up to 69gr lead core ammo, you dont loose much practical accuracy going faster on the twist, but you do lose a lot of practical accuraccy by going too slow. Also 1/12 twist barrels aren't nearly as common as 1/8 and 1/7 barrels are, and usually are more expensive for either being a "clone" barrel, or a target barrel that takes advantage of the the slight increase in accuracy for varmint/bench shooting where you're only using light bullets and are trying to squeeze the maximal amount of accuracy form then.

Lesson I learned long ago hunting deer on state land. Yeah I might be deer hunting with a shotgun and with the loads used have been known to be top notch fir defense. But when somebody is messing with you their eyes are glued to that long gun, they don't notice the 4" 357 coming out of the jacket pocket and going to a low ready. Me being right handed and preffering it to shoot I screw with alot of people that may not know me well enough, they think I'm left handed until I shoot because I've taught myself through instinct to always carry my long gun by the receiver in my left hand incase I need to get to my pistol. Never liked slinging a rifle or shotgun, seems like every time you see something worth shooting the guns in an impossible place to get to it without being noticed.

When I heard a car door slam up the hill a little ways. Two men came toward my camp yelling that I was trespassing , at least one of them was carrying what looked like a shotgun. Well as the men approach to about 30 yards and within eye sight I yelled back to hold it right the he’ll their and put my hand on my dads 38 police special . I told them this was national forest land and to stop right there and by the way my grandpas 30-30 was in arms reach. The two men stopped and said they were just kidding and turned and got out of there. Always go armed.

So about eight years ago, myself, my two brothers and father drew out for archery deer. In the state that we live in, if you have a concealed weapons permit, you can carry a handgun while archery hunting, and since none of us had one, we only had bows. So we had a fairly successful hunt, but there was a moment when we were hunting a spot that we perceived as pretty far from anything, and we were for the most part alone in the woods. Well, when we came out of the area and moved on, my older brother who was 17 at the time, told my father that he'd seen people moving around, not wearing camo, not carrying bows, etc. it wasn't maybe a week later, that we were at the local gun shop and there was a big hubbub, turns out that the area that we were hunting was a "farm" where some less than reputable people were growing some less than legal substances, and they shot and killed someone who was hunting in the area. Anymore, I don't walk away from the truck without at least a reload for my rifle and one for my handgun.

He was driving a 90's Dodge diesel truck with a canopy and it was Forrest green teal almost. He started by asking me what I was doing repeatedly and I told him I was just doing my day and I don't want to visit people when I go to the mountains. He then proceeded to attempt to get me to hold his XD Springfield and I refused. He because aggressive and I told him it's time to go. He said what will you do if I don't. I chambered my round and ordered him to roll out and be safe. He decided to drive away. This little guy was incredibly scrappy and wiry and had terrific stamina. We pounded out the whole segment into pretty much a draw in which I was completely exhausted and glad the fight was over.

Paul, I had a similar incident years ago walking my neighborhood, post operative lap surgery. A drunk cussed me and followed me 150 Yards. I never stopped walking. Just wanted to get away. He was cussing the whole time. I tried to explain, I had lived in that neighborhood all my life. Delivered papers in elementary school and practiced marching band. When he was tired of following me, he said something about causing harm to my mule. I drew my weapon, pointed it to the ground and told him to go home. I did not want a problem. Either he went home to chean his shorts, thank Jesus Christ for him not dying just then. I was not sure if he was gonna get a shotgun or play bumper tag. I decided to walk another street than that one to get my exercise.

9:45 I've ran into a similar situation hiking in the woods by myself unarmed! It's a very scary situation and I could have gotten murdered! Most people you meet on trails are generally nice and decent people, but you got a few trouble makers that think they own the public land and are looking for nothing but trouble... When I first got "in" ('72) I was issued canvas LBE with H suspender. Then I got uptown with nylon LBE and Y suspender. Decades later, I'm a competitive shooter in the Guard and I get a further uptown load-bearing vest. Then a ventilated LBV. So between a 1911, an M9, an M16A1, an A2, an M4, an M1D, an XM21, an M24, a NM M14, I've used just about every piece of US load-bearing gear ever made.
My personal gear right now is a 16" DPMS .308 Oracle (I'm calling it my M5) with a Strike Eagle 1-4X, some other improvements, a light and a single-point sling, and an XD45 with night sights and a light. My SHTF belt has a holster, mags for the .308 and the .45, heavy folding knife, handcuffs and two tourniquet kits.

My buddy exchanged some words with him. Lucky for him my buddy who has been in more than a few scraps didn’t pound him. The whole time I’m thinking this guy is nucking futs!!! Who the hell out in the hills in the middle of nowhere starts yelling at a couple of guys with rifles in their arms!!
