Tough draw for Osaka…. But congrats to Garcia for playing brave, lights-out tennis! 🎉
Garcia was just so impressive on serve, really hitting those spots with a lot of power. I was even more impressed with her composure, she's not always the strongest mentally, but today she really nailed it.
Problem is she won’t play like this in the rounds after this, they all do this bring their best game for Osaka then crash out.

Extremely high and equal level of play of the first two WTA tens. It's hard to stay there.
Great match from both. The signs are there that Osaka could come back very quickly. She wasn't too far off here.
Would love to see Garcia have a deep run in this one, she's been knocking on the door at the top of the women's game for a while now.
Osaka played well just her third match since 2022 and having a baby. Her movement probably cost her but that's understanble you're not going to be the same athlete after just having baby. Serena was never the same player when she came back in 2018 when she gave birth even though she made all those grand slam finals and semi finals she was not at her best.
clijsters won 3 slams after having a baby… nobody can repeat that
@@mihailoostojic1321 Yeah but Clijsters retired fairly young and she came back one year and half after having her daughter. Serena and Osaka came back months after having a child. There is more depth now on the WTA than in 2009. This was a tough first round for Osaka. Clijsters body was already recovered by the time she came back on the tour in 2009 after her child birth. Serena body never recovered at all and she probably came back too soon and was going to postpartum at the time of her comeback too and breast feeding. Another issue is Serena was in her thirties she was way past her peak.

A tough matchup in the first round. It stems from the low ranking of Naomi Osaka due to 10 month hiatus. However, Osaka will be back more powerful and tougher in the second half of 2024 season.

Naomi and Caroline have never won the tennis grand slam. Naomi won the AO twice and reached its 4th round once, and the same for the USO. But she never reached the 4th round of the other two tennis grand slam tournaments.
