- Realistic lighting and shadowing has been added to each part of Ravenholm, greatly enhancing the moody, dimly lit streets, abandoned buildings, and ingenious traps set up by Father Grigori. Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project is a community-made remaster of Half-Life 2 being developed by Orbifold Studios using NVIDIA RTX Remix, the ultimate modding platform. The modders are rebuilding materials with Physically Based Rendering (PBR) properties, adding extra geometric detail and leveraging NVIDIA technologies including full ray tracing, DLSS 3.5, Reflex, and RTX IO to deliver a fantastic experience for GeForce RTX gamers.

This is what Half Life 2 looks like in my mind when I think back on it.
That's what it looked like to us back in 2004 when we first played it.
And it really was ! Best looking game in that time !
@@phatminhphan4121it still holds up today for what it is
Same
and it's free.
The original version still looks good even 20 years later
I was gonna say, for something almost 20 years old, the original release lighting holds up pretty well. We sure as hell weren't complaining on our CRTs
Isn't it already a remastered version? I doubt the game had 4k textures and tessellation at the time.
@@gavinderulo12The game never got any official remaster. It was ported to newer branches of Source sure, but many of the new changes and additions were superficial at best. Plus, most if not all of the assets stayed the same since 2004.
It's not the original. The game was changed several times and doesn't look the same as on release. Especially lightening, shadows, shaders and stuff.
@@gavinderulo12no the non RTX version they are showing is the orange box build of hl2 which in some ways actually looks worse than the original pre-orange box build, it’s also improved in some ways but not significantly. There’s no tesselation, there are normal maps and I think that’s it as far as creating depth from textures, the source engine was capable of parallax occlusion mapping, I don’t remember if hl2 used it but that can be pretty convincing even today.
and the best part: it still manages to maintain that HL2 look
Yes, back in the days I would launch FakeFactory and Update mods for HL2 and 10 mins later I uninstall them.
@@Pllayer064 MMod is great, keeps the style while adding more spice
Ye, you can tell that this was made by fans who wants to keep the original look intact.
U Guys missed the point , it's just a filter, RTX remix like a Halo remaster game on top game
@@lhagwha U comletely missed the point. Really. You did.
Still gotta hand it to Valve, for how old this game is it still looks really good for it's time.
When it came out in 2004 it was the most brutal thing the industry had ever given birth to and all in real time. Far Cry and Doom 3 seem older in comparison and came out the same year. What Valve did with this game was an act of witchcraft.
@@evil_chuckalmost every time valve gets around to doing something, be it a game or hardware, they go and do something revolutionary, the problem is getting them to actually get up and work on things

Although they call me crazy I care not, for thou art my helper, my strength, and my saviour.
Portal is getting a whole prequel campaign with Portal Revolutions and Half Life 2 is now getting RTX remaster. I guess Valve enjoyers are eating good this year. Although it is ironic how all of these are community made.
Remember, its 20 years for HL2, Valve is gonna cook like they did last year
tf2 fans literally starving in the corner:
Dont forget Entropy Zero 2. Just played through it and its fucking incredible
i want to add Swelter to this list, its style is amazing and the ost is hl2 level of quality@@dr._breens_beard
Alright grandpa. It's time for bed now.
This shows how ahead of its time Half-life 2 was. The visuals, the atmosphere, the gameplay are still kicking after 20 years.
A true masterpiece.
I think it would be better if the air was 2 tones darker for the RTX one, otherwise it has a bright atmosphere.
Oh yes, it would also benefit RTX because of light bouncing from your flashlight and illuminating an entire dark room.
That's probably the moonlight scattering in the air.
it's probably best for the trailer for visibility purposes though
It's very much Work In Progress still.
@@thedeegee1601isn’t that the perfect time to give constructive criticism?
0:50 I just love how it drops frames when the barrel explodes XDDDD
Gotta keep the real HL2 experience
Love that they are redoing assets and gun feel along with it and its not just a glorified reshade.
At 0:20 the ground looks too smooth, maybe reducing the smoothness or adding greater diversity in the smoothness map would help
Yeah, just a little subtle bumpiness would look better.
@@SkemeKOS If you look closely, there is already subtle bumpiness, and the normal map is probably fine. It's the roughness/smoothness map that needs the most work.
Almost every surface has their specularity dialed to the max. Probably to exaggerate the RTX. But it makes everything look much faker than it needs to be. It's the Unreal Engine wetness look all over again. The original ground and flooring looks physically more accurate without any PBR materials compared to the 'upgraded' versions :p. I bet if they dialed it back to 30-50% it will look much more incredible.
@@DeltaNovumare they using PBR? If not, that could explain this.
@@gavinderulo12 originally HL2 doesn't have (and might not even support?) PBR, but the modded RTX version is surely using some kind of physically based shader rendering.
No way....HL2 still looks very good for its age, physics are still amazing and one of best
This technology has been my dream for the last 25 years since I entered the PC gaming world and began making maps for Half Life and other game engines. The old way of compiling lighting was great for its time, but all I could dream of was real time ray tracing for all lighting, creating dynamic shadows and light bouncing off objects while you play. Now it's finally here and it's beautiful. I'm so glad I get to experience this in my lifetime.
If you say so... I remember 30 years ago i use to dream about RTX4090's and my dream came true, we now have them.
"please give me slightly better visuals at the cost of half my framerate"
statements dreamed by utterly deranged
@@seaque. It's fun to look at and to take screenshots, but the ghosting, FPS, and needing DLSS for it to be bearable takes a lot away from it.
Not to mention the price tag...
@@stuart3712 Raytracing was very much a thing 25 years ago, just not possible in real-time, so it was exclusive to animated films or for baking light into geometry. It's probably an exagerated number but if OP has been following tech this long it's very much possible he wanted real time light simulation all those years ago.
@@Cosmic-Bear. I've known about ray tracing since Pixar and Toy Story were a thing, so even before I was PC gaming I knew about it. But it was only when I started to do map deving as a young guy did I realize how important it will be for game creation and experience one day. I didn't think it would take this long, I guess I wasn't sure what to expect. But I'm glad it's here now.
It's weird how this is how it looks in my memories 🤣 Will be nostalgic to revisit the HL world again.
I just played through HL2 in VR for the first time since release and it was awesome. It's not a perfect game but the creativity and technological innovation still feel ahead of the times in a lot of ways.
Probably one of my most anticipated projects in the last few years. One of my all time favorite games with path tracing and new HQ assets?? Yes, please!
Also i'm surprised how good this game still look even when put against new path-traced version. The lightmaps were great tech, but of course lack any dynamism and limited by resolution.
And the best VR mod, like native.
Even Half Life 1 is surprisingly comparable to path tracing. Valve kicked ass at lighting from the start.
@@viktorianasare they doing a remake? I’m currently playing Half life 2 VR mod & it looks nothing like this?

Lightmaps as default calculating RT lightning. This is make HL2 looks good even for now. Me, as developer, hate lightmaps because they suitable only static object when I want more dynamic gameplay with destroying constructions and physical props
wow. that is the game that never gets old for me. and the whole lighting now, i want it.
If this comes in VR too I'll shit myself. I think some of the HL2 VR guys are working on this. RTX and this game would be killer in VR.

I never played the Half Life series. I got into PC gaming very recently.
Almost done with my first playthrough of Half Life Black Mesa and it's better than 99% of games these days. Looks amazing with RTX HDR
Can't wait for this to come out.
Still waiting
Can’t believe I ended this game back in 2007 for the first time, I was a kid back then. It was amazing in every aspect and felt even better with subsequent plays. Time indeed flies. Beyond stoked for this redo!
Impressive for how quickly this was put together
i guess people will complain no matter what and i guess im one of those people, i do like the overall look of the materials, i think they fit ravenholm nicely though im not too convinced by the rougness and specular values for some these, i think the floorboards are too shiny for the dusty old place ravenholm is supposed to be, i think the same could be said about some other areas but ive seen too few to be too critical of these. ill await further footage
gameplay > graphics
@@adam2178 This entire thing is about graphics. We can all play the original any time.
Yeah this existing doesn't take anything away from hl2, im just hoping there is some customizability when it comes to the graphics if this is what the final result could look like
I think the fact that it doesn't look so extremely different is a real testament to how much valve focused on realism for the graphics of this game.
Holy, I never knew I needed a HL2 remaster but this is actually beautiful. I really wanna see what HL2 RTX will look like with the Super Gravity Gun in the final chapter, it’s gonna be sick

I think the most impressive thing about this is how good Half-Life 2 looks all these years later. When compared to other games that came out in 2004 like Halo 2 and Doom 3, I think HL2 aged the best.
it looks good but some stuff that you dont expect to look shiny or flat looking is the dirt and wood, ravenholm is this old, falling apart, grimey place but in rtx it looks like the janitor gave all the floors a nice waxing :/
just to tack on but at 0:15 you can see what i mean if you pause, the dirt and grass texture looks shiny and flat and the grass doesnt cast shadows on it whatsoever making it look weird and flat
U can tweak the roughness, metalness, Normal mapping and even POM height In the rtx remix menu and make them look more bumpy and according to your liking.
Its just weird how they would leave it shiny tho for a showcase like this
great work guys
Even if extremely unlikely imagine these assets being officially ported to Gmod

it is like a completely new different game it is awesome i am going to masterbate, it has 16k more polygons so the gmapley is good
Lighting improvements done by ray tracing play such a good role in thriller/horror games. Really sets the mood and improves the atmosphere of the game, makes them scarier a little bit imo.
It's incredible that the original still holds up
The framerate is noticeably lower for the RTX version.
They could have very easily faked 60fps (e.g, set game to half speed, record 30fps, play back at 60fps), so I guess good on them for being honest.
I was waiting so long for another showcase, great job!
Oh my god, just when I was wishing the game had a modern remake to replay the story, this is perfect thank you !

Yes of course. Just wait sit until Nvidia is going to put money out of its pocket to develop for AMD and Intel.
FakeFactory mod is a complete cancer with out of place level design, bad models, unfitting soundtrack, static props blocking the movement and sexual degeneracy. Sure, one can selects to some extend what is loaded, but there are better mods out there.

Could've been even prettier, way prettier if they used higher resolution shadow maps, with only cost of higher map filesize.

This is going to look amazing when VR is able to run it in a few years time.
Shadows aside this looks like Half Life Alyx. The level design of HL2 is too well suited for predone lighting it doesn't need dynamic path traced global illumination. If Valve wanted to do a rasterized VR remake today that looks as good as this they could.
Me and my friend was just talking about there was no RTX remix coming to Half-Life 2 that was only yesterday. I stand corrected.
