  • In this video I visit Harry's Coin Shop and we talk about silver, gold, and coin collecting! We talk about making money off of coins and if new coin collectors can turn a profit. Harry has some words of wisdom regarding coin collecting. We talk about what coins to avoid and how to make money from buying or selling coins. We talk about some coin collecting tips and how you can get burned collecting coins as well. This can be seen as a coin collecting for beginners guide and also a coin collecting 101 video. When it comes to coin collecting coin values, you need to be able to understand coin grading. Coin grading can be a very helpful skill when it comes to knowing a coin's value. I hope this video was helpful to new coin collectors. Let me know if you want to see more videos about coin collecting in 2023.

According to History, the word dollar is much older than the official US currency. 'Dollar' is an anglicized form of 'thaler' , the name given to coins first minted in 1519 from silver mined locally in Joachimsthal in Bohemia. Today the town of Jáchymov lies within the borders of the Czech Republic.
Svornost mine, founded in 1518, is still active.

    • @davidlesniak3790
      @davidlesniak3790 Год назад +5

And one more fun fact: In 2017, the Czech Republic decided to make the first silver bullion coin, and since then, they have used Niue mint to produce them. The low-mintage silver bullion coins are called ''Czech Lion'', and because they are minted in Niue, the denomination is 2 dollars. Thaler is the German translation of Czech Tolar.
So what is the irony that the name of the old currency came back to its place of origin?

With these guys you could make a whole series of 10+ interesting videos on 8 reales coins alone :) These coins are historically relevant across the globe up to China and south-east Asia, they were minted in both Americas, they had various and cool production processes and numerous significant varieties and tell-tale peculiarities, and even different chemical compositions that collectors know of (the Mexican ones contained traces of gold e.g.). They were counterfeited for international trade by the US and British mints and for local trade by numerous "artisans", so even an old counterfeit can tell quite a story. And there still are experts in the US and other countries who sometimes share their fantastic knowledge at the forums online and in the books. It will be much more exciting and educational than just another bunch of videos in anticipation of "metals' prices going to the Moon" :) Please consider making this nice issue a starting point to increase the variety of coin-related content on your channel. I spent years buying and selling from estate and garage sales, and because it's so hard to know the value of things, it was easy to lose money (or end up with 'stuff'...unsold). My favorite saying back then was... _'You can't know everything about everything'._
When cell phones came about, it got better because you could instantly search the actual *sold* price. _(not 'asking price'.)_
*HOWEVER!* I always stayed away from coins because unless they were 'slabbed', you had the extra variable of coin grade, or condition. And as you all know. Condition is EVERYTHING.

I am a hobbyist. The only way i can see to make money in coins is to become a dealer. The hobbyist has to buy retail, sell wholesale and pay the postage both ways, if dealings with an online coin shop. Coins that we bought 20 plus years ago, yes we could make a little money. If i buy a silver eagle today, i would be hard pressed to break even if i decided to sell it in tne short term. Grading coins is somewhat subjective, more than a few disagreements are started over coin grading between the buyer and seller. It is very possible for my children to make money off of our coins, but not us.

I would say that after two years into the hobby with study of grading, the most one should sell is constitutional silver, mint and proof sets. One of the good series to start selling is Kennedy halves as the vast majority is clad and there is only one year 90% silver. It is rich enough to enjoy learning but not overwhelming. But sticking with these lowers greatly the risk of selling unknowingly counterfeits.
The comment of World coins is spot on. Especially 19th century -- many gold and silver coins from South American countries are quite affordable.
And yes in the 18th and early 19th century, most Americans used a panoply of silver coins from Spain, England and France.

We also have to remember some of us who are seasoned stackers just don't give a damn what the price is and going to buy on a DCA (dollar cost average) anyways... like me I buy silver once a month usually 10 to 20 oz depending on the price.. the lower the price the more I buy... numismatic wise, I tend to get like one or two coins a month alongside my DCA but if prices are way up I just take that money and I set it aside and by my numismatic coin later or maybe a more expensive one I've been eyeballing.... anyways that's my two cents on that subject😂

Agreed, I buy a 10 ounce silver bar on the 7th of every month. I really don't worry too much about the price, but I do bounce between online dealers to get the best price. Sometimes it's Hero, other times it's Monument Metals. Occasionally, I'll add something interesting, like the Coronation coin coming out. High premium, but I'll only buy one.

It’s a good place to park your money with no expectations of the bank closing down or stock/crypto being shorted! This way your sliver or gold will always have a value and the biggest value is being able to hold that money in your hands without having big stacks of cash laying around. This is how I look at it and I also buy old coins that I think look cool even if there isn’t any silver or gold in that coin.

If you look at the Chinese coin markets the quantity, quality and variety are on a totally different level.

Silver Dragons, I love world gold and silver coins. Its a pity that many dealers and people only focus on American coins. Sure I understand if you live in the US you would buy American coins. However many world coins are cheaper and often much less than US coins, somemay also have higher gold and silver content than US coins . So if you are not also looking at world coins, you are missing out.

So glad y’all still talk about coins and not conspiracies. Thank you for not fear mongering about our crappy government and raise of CBDCs and BRICS. We get it, it’s understood, and that’s why we stack and collect. That 1799 coin almost looked better than the crappy Morgans the mint sent out last week. I got a good one though.

I buy as much as possible gold coin of numismatic worth - as much I can with my very modest budget. If bullion, I go for that with low mintages.

Gotta get into coin roll hunting if you want to make money as a beginner. You’re laying face value to learn hands-on about what to look for.

Graded coins are the ones to buy raw coins are for beginners to fill in amateur collections Silver bars and gold rounds are the best to collect Silver rounds with different designs are always higher priced
