It is a "financially inteligent" hobby.
I treat it like a hobby, the budget allocated to it is from my "fun money", but I do try to curate a collection made out of pieces that are desirable in the long run, therefore, should sell well.
If they sell well, fantastic. If they dont, it was my fun budget anyways.

When you’re throwing around 10’s of thousands of dollars then you have to approach it as both imo.
While it’s an incredibly enjoyable hobby I don’t plan on taking them to the grave with me or passing them down. The plan is to sell off in my early 60’s and use the $ to fund my Golden years!

Terrible terrible terrible investment. Buy retail and MAYBE (if you’re lucky) get wholesale (50% of Retail) when you sell (as you get into a grading argument with the buyer as a negotiation tactic.
Illiquid, risky, enriches the few at the expense of the many. No thanks. I regret every coin purchase I’ve ever made.

You make some good points. I think in terms of the collectors coins, the dealers need to offer a better service when you wish to sell. So often they are rude and condescending and they clearly are wearing a different hat when they buy and when they sell. This is very true with antique coins, but you would also get very little for your silver Lunar coins too from a bullion merchant. The best option you have is to buy bullion grade coins (at least for the regular person anyway). Personally I do not like coin dealers and neither do I trust them and that is the issue for me.

Forgot to add, one thing coin collecting does enforce --- budgeting. After the initial enthusiasm tempers down, those hobbyists that are in it for the long run discover that coins while fun take up space and require good care. You also refine your acquisitions and move towards quality over quantity --- and a greater expense for one coin. Since coins are not a necessity, one must carefully budget and learn to wait to find an attractive coin you find desirable. Also coin collectors learn to research and use their eyes and mind to evaluate a coin as one would a piece of visual art. These are all capabilities that are worth developing as they transfer so well to other fields outside numismatics.

Few years time I'll have a fair amount, so collection has been a god send for me, I'm not very good with money and used to spend it on clothes or food, now I buy bullion and sovs which is killing two birds with one stone, saving and collecting

Gold is indeed a hedge against inflation that said coins can be separated into so many different things you cannot compare apples with pears. Because of the adhoc nature people buy coins then I'd be inclined to say it's not an investment however some people do get lucky and make money buying and selling coins.
I agree it's an hobby more than an investment however if you bought a set amount of gold coins each month for example a bullion half sovereign each month over decades then I'd argue that was an investment.
That said I also agree with you that it is much better buying coins than disposable crap people buy today and over time it will build a certain amount of wealth but you are not guaranteed to get back what you put in...

@@Numistacker everything goes up and down in price. I guess for me im really strict on how I treat my investments as in i put the same amount of monetary value into different asset classes every month irrespective of price and average in over decades wether that's gold silver stocks reits etc etc that's how I treat investments.
Coins where it's definitely building wealth over time and I've been lucky over all I've made money but not on every item I've sold it's very adhoc how I buy coins some months I spend thousands some months I barely spend any I can only ever treat it as a hobby in that scenario. In some ways classifying at as a hobby keeps it interesting as I don't want my investments to be exciting normally means something bad s going to happen.

What I find interesting is you do see a influx of individuals come on to RUclips around the highs. Personally I like the comfort of knowing if my wallet is empty one day I have a back up as well as a hobby collection to keep to hopefully pass on. I find it fun finding obscure coins to collect and share. Hopefully I can find one soon that’s worth sharing to the community. Keep up the videos numi!

It is a hobby. It is not a great investment. I see dealers buying coins in decent shape and most use in the US the Greysheet which prices them quite a bit below retail.
Bullion has greater liquidity but don't hope to get your money back in the long-term except in special cases.
Really the coin hobby has the potential of being investment if you hold them for the long-term but would be, if it were a stock ,a rather higher risk one. There are intermittent cases of what was once a scarce or rare coin become scarce or somewhat common after a large hoard is found or released.
So I agree with your video completely --- and yes you end up have some money put aside. At worst, you will receive face value or a few cents. And often a coin collection can be a good cushion - my family's collection while modest in value ( a few thousand) still served as a nice cushion during a health crisis.

  • @wesleywalker1594

I think first and foremost obtaining precious metal bullion and numismatic coins should be viewed as a hobby. If you collect an appreciable amount of say silver or gold coins you will realize a gain over time but it is not guaranteed. Warren Buffet has has famously gone on record stating that viewing precious metal as an investment is a foolish strategy. His view is that your money is parked in an asset like precious metals does very little over time versus a wisely selected stock. Yet central banks all over the world are occasionally purchasing prodigious amounts of physical gold and adding that to their portfolios. It's being done for a reason.
Collecting numismatics, like collecting any "luxury" asset like watches, fountain pens, even trading cards is a very tricky proposition. You have to educated on what will be valuable in the future and if there will be someone willing to pay your asking price when you sell it. Unless you have a crystal ball, that is difficult to do. Who knew that an $40,000 Audemer Piguet Royal Oak watch. from three years ago would be worth three times that price today? The same with coins. The 1995 West Point Silver Eagle MS70 Proof was only trading for perhaps a third of what it's trading for today when it was first produced.
I'm content with purchasing bullion when I can. If I realize a gain, great but I won't look to to get any fantastic rate of return over the long run.

A very interesting video and it appears we have very similar 'investment' stratergies. I started collecting in 2007 owing to the '£' being bullied by other currancies, so i went for an internationally friendly commodity which was gold. I had no experience of buying 'physical' gold and was introduced to the sovereign by my father. Some 15 years on i'm now a collector of a specific trait of coin, but i do see them as an investment for an eventual, beneficial return as well as enjoyment (the hunt, the negotiation, the acquasition).

In the present state of the economy, it is definitely attracting investors who want to invest in ancient/old gold. I think every coin collector wants to collect the coins for the love of the coin, although at the same time you want your collection to increase over time for it to be secure. For the high end coins it can be just an investment, although for the true coin collector of high end coins, it will be both an investment and passion.

Probably one of the most interesting subjects to be brought up I guess one of the contributing factors to coins is how does the coin market compete to a home loan at 6 % or bank interest at 3% . This is an old video now but I’m curious because a lot of what you say is true today. In 2024 if you could post a video on returns on coins I guess this will fall into the art industry backed up by the bullion industry but not necessarily the bullion industry. . It’s all rather confusing if you could clarify.

Rare items do indeed have their ups and downs, but over a period of time they do seem to generally rise. We’ve gone through a period of low interest rates and interest rates will rise to average at 4 or 5%. The higher interest rates go up the higher the regular savings returns are and that generally reduces the demand for things like coins.

Are you really thinking that folks buying old coins are expecting them to appreciate at the level that the 1933 St. Gaudens has attained? I think any normal person who sees a coin sell for $22 million is going to figure out there's something very, very rare and special about that coin. I'd doubt they're going to think the 100 year old quarter they just bought is going to bring them millions in the near future. Cmon...

Looking from a slightly different perspective could it be the coin market is not yet mature as a market in itself yet. (I am speaking of “affordable” coins). Shares, funds etc. have a vast amount of readily available history on price ,trends, etc. They are more *in your face* as an investment option. Neither do you have to handle and store them. There are very few places you can do the same with coins. And of course there is the dreaded VAT! Only half a percent tax on shares. Maybe once these firms that store them and make them VAT free come to the fore, and trending information becomes available, then the market will develop. Personally I just like collecting them.

This video was far too general to be meaningful at all. There is a big difference between stacking bullion, building type collections of older or modern coins, and collecting coins with significant rarity value such as 1909 S VDB Lincoln cents or 3-legged buffalo nickels. The value of such things as investments could be determined with research, but lumping all of numismatics together won't tell you anything useful.

I joined the silver forum and found numistacker.s great you tube channel and soon found my favourite.s yes sovereign.s didnt khow the was so many and how long back they went. And then the London coin fair i got to see some fantastic coins. Its a great hobby and i have had other hobbies but this one i have done so well with. Ive not lost money on any coins to date only got back more sometimes a fair bit more. At the beginning i didnt ever think i would ever get the special year sovereign.s ive managed to get the latest being the 1989 4 coin set. I always wanted that set and the 2005 4 coin set as well. Got them both from london coin fair. For me sovereign.s are my thing and ive done good with them. And the Victoria young head shield backs being one of my favourites. So yes a great hobby for me and ive done good so far my 1989 4 coin set was only bought 2 weeks ago at the coin fair and i dont mind telling i only paid 3900 for it i couldn't believe my luck its gone straight to Russell for grading and hopefully gets a few 70.s it will be my best set to date so far. Personally I see it as a hobby. A mate of mine got me into the hobby three years ago and before Covid hit we would go once a month to a small coin collectors group. Take 50 or 100 eur with me and come home with a ton of coins and zero eur in my pocket.
I found a few really nice Japanese Dragon Sen/Yen coins for cheap recently and I think those are one of the best designs around. And if I overpaid for them? I don't care. I like how they look and they are of good quality. Furthermore I got a few Maundy's because of the story. (1D 1834 and 1D 1927) I feel coins are a piece of history and that's what matters. I don't have bullion coins, I just buy what looks good and what I come across.
I thought of maybe getting into grading with a few coins for fun, but I also think it's kind of expensive for me as a student who works a single day in the week. (and having to do the paperwork is also a little thing for me, what coin is in what category and such...)
And I am kind of thinking about selling a few things because then I might get my drivers license a little bit faster, but I am not really sure yet.
For me personally, the hobby died down a little due to Covid, the prices online skyrocketed a little (even for circulation coins) and not going to that coin collectors group also made me lose a little interest, the point being that going places and meeting people, buying coins from them and talking about the hobby? The fun of not knowing what you might find if go to a numismatic outing? That was fun...
And my investment strategy? I am not really serious about having a million ounces of silver and gold yet, due to my financial situation as a student I just keep my eyes peeled for good lots on my local Facebook-marketplace.
