What's the difference between Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion coins?

- The Royal Mint produces three types of uncirculated commemorative coin finish: Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion. Proof coins are the highest standard of commemorative coin produced by The Royal Mint. Brilliant Uncirculated coins have a higher standard of finish than Bullion coins, without the extra finishing and detail provided on Proof coins. Bullion coins have a similar standard of finish to circulating coins. Find out more in this video. www.royalmint.c...
I have the utmost respect for your craftsmanship. Thank you for this explanation of terms, and showing the world why each coin type carries it's specific premium.
Amazing! I wasn't aware of all the extensive labor at the level of "perfection" that goes into the coins, especially the Proofs.
Great job; great video.
Thank you for this most informative video. My 3× great-grandfather, Peter Filatreu Cross (1815-1862) was an assistant engraver at the US Mint in Philadelphia in the 1840s and 1850s. ~Bill Stephens
That's awesome.
Who gives a fuck?
Finally a video that explains it for a newbie like me. Thanks
The difference between BU and Proof is very tiny on some sovereigns I own. Bullion next to a BU or Proof looks very weak in comparison but they are two different things. I'll be showing this comparison soon on my channel.
So few things make me proud to be British these days. This does.
medicboyuk THE MIGRANTS CAN NEVER TAKE IT AWAY.
We could tell the difference yet I am with you that it is more of a commercial product than mintage standard. Royal mint is by far the only mint that carry three tiers. It is the top one, even the proof krugerrand is a little shy compared to the proof sovereigns and Britannias - closet and closer now.
So you want to get political? Okay, here's my little rant:
It's absolutely true about immigration. I'm in favor of migration, legal migration that is.... because laws do matter. Legal immigration is totally fine and should be encouraged within certain limits. I have no idea what those limits should be.
(Under time pressure? See the wonderful essay by Davy Crockett: www.101bananas.com/library2/crockett.html)
Let's look under the hood, shall we?
While I believe we should welcome all strangers to our respective lands, it must be lawful immigration. Why is that exactly?
First, I've attempted dual citizenship in a variety of countries and this is the accepted norm. Every country has rules and you just can't waltz-in and expect others to serve you at public expense. I was surprised at the universality of this concept. They even insist on a certain value of assets, to prevent freeloaders. Imagine that! They want talented newcomers, educated, those who will benefit their society and culture. I admit, I was a bit shocked.
In other words, in most countries taxpayers are NOT expected to pay for all the world's financially challenged.... whether it be health care, food stamps, housing subsidies or what have you. There is a limit to available resources, thus there needs to a limit on benefits. Make sense?
No? Isn't it true that what I give to you (or what I am forced to give you) I cannot give myself or my family, or even donate to a cause I personally believe it? Right. So YOU have more right to my money than I do... is that what you're saying?
I don't think so. I support plenty of charities... but I do so voluntarily... AFTER I've checked it out. I have no interest in supporting scammers or people here illegally. To the people jumping the line, I say this: Stand in line, guys and gals... wait your turn! Others waited... so can you.
Perhaps you do believe in force. Okay, fine. Are you aware of where a little force always leads? It leads to a LOT of force, otherwise known as Tyranny. This is not classic picture of a policeman helping the kids across the street anymore...oh no. This is full armored vehicles and SWAT raids by the thousands... for a possible Mary Jane offense. It wasn't always like this you know... and the level of force is getting worse.
Perhaps this is just a pet-peeve of mine -- Seems most 'immigration without restriction' supporters believe others should pay for their misfortune, virtually forever. Not only pay for their initial escape (from a bad government perhaps) but for their continued existence. But why does it need to be government forcing the issue with their guns and threats of jail? That's really my question.
I met a tour guide once who liked her former of government, saying: "They paid you to live!". Really, I asked? Where is this guaranteed income wonderland? (It was St. Lucia, before bankruptcy forced a change in government)
Here's my final point. That's certainly more room for charity, churches, and community organizations to assist those less fortunate (you know, institutions that flourished before the growth in welfare states) who provide services not provided by government force.
When government gets involved, as I pointed out above it's essentially at GUNPOINT. They buy votes from Group A by taking money from Group B. At first it's never very much money. Eventually.... it's everything!
You might as well say "from each according to his ability TO each according to his need", a bankrupt moral philosophy that has led to the death of between 40 - 60 million people in China alone , under Mao. Exactly like that. Then there's Stalin, Hitler and all the other tyrants. And now it's in South America under Maduro.
Is that what you want?
FYI -- When the income tax was passed it was 1/4 of 1%. Who could object to such a meaningless amount? You know, "to help the people".
Strong words... hyperbole maybe? Grab a map and see for yourself how far the world has gone into socialism.... and broke. (No fair mentioning Norway either.... those are not socialist governments... those government are capitalist but have a single socialist program like health care. They're also quite small and don't allow immigrants like we do. Whatever welfare they have couldn't exist if they allowed unrestricted immigration... the math just wouldn't hold up)
This idea of FORCE at GUNPOINT needs addressing. Even in the U.S. try disobeying a government regulation, government edict or not paying your taxes or property related fees; see what happens.... eventually the GUNS show up. Not right away, of course. But they do. That's the force I'm talking about -- government coercion. Do this or Go directly to Jail. (No collecting $200 either)
Charity needs to be voluntary, not at gunpoint. THAT'S the point I'm trying to make. And that's the same point the Founding Fathers insisting on writing into the Constitution... if anybody cares to listen.
Next time you hear the name Davy Crockett, think of what he wrote in "not mine to give":
www.101bananas.com/library2/crockett.html
@frankos rooni there the original english not people from Pakistan for example
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost my password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
Wow! Never imagined all the detailed work that went into making it possible to mint a coin. Always thought a machine was used to make the coin dies. Learning they are hand carved was an amazingly unexpected piece of information.
Their "bullion" strikes are what our Canadian Mint calls CIRCULATION or BUSINESS strike, only struck once, hundreds per hour, flipped out by machines into containers where they strike one another, getting scratched.
You make the most beautifully detailed coins.
Very interesting and informative - thank you for sharing.
Usually new bullion that’s remained in its original packaging or kept in a protective capsule is called brilliant uncirculated, since it wasn’t circulated or handled. Proof is extra striking and higher relief with extra shine, as described in the video.
I doubt it, bullion coins don't usually have a smooth finish.
From the USA here. The royal mint really puts out a quality video. Everything from the US mint looks like it came from a Walmart film crew.
I found a pound coin in my change that was piedfort and had a proof finish.
Madness lol
Lucky you mate. Bet that made your day
Thumbs up for content done very well and CAPTIONS. CAPTIONS so I can see and "HEAR".
Thank you.
This presentation...beautiful & informative & a must know before you buy!
Buying...a matter of your choice!
I wonder why they don't make the dies with a CNC controlled EDM machine. Having to hand-craft a new die every 500 coins seems like a huge unneeded expense.
Hello from America. Everything I’ve ever purchased from the Royal Mint has been second to none. I’m glad they got the milk spots on the silver Britannias resolved. Has nothing to do with the guys who make the dies it was something with the planchets (blank coins).
That's why proof coins are so expensive! It's been really educational, nice made!
the proof sovereign coin is my most favorite coin in the world St.George slaying the Dragon is the most beautiful picture and of course the queen the Finish is perfect. cheers from the US.
nicely said Billy
Ya that Queen is a dictator. Fuck her.
Saint George slaying the dragon is based on the Thracian horseman myth
Have you seen "1 oz Isle Of Man Angel"
Very interesting detail
I wish they could just remove the queen from all the coins. Completely ruins beautiful coins.
Interested publication!
Love anything from The Royal Mint. Brilliant craftsmanship.
Love the Britannia bullion coins, especially the 2021. They usually come with some defect though like a scratch in the matte finish or a round dent in the rim. Maybe I always get the bargain bin coins, it's still disappointing to get a new coin from the dealer and it's already nicked in the capsule.
It's not disappointing...
It's *UNACCEPTABLE!*
The Royal Mint produces and sells the poorest quality bullion and proof coins of any of the world's mints, yet generally seeks to get the highest price for them. Other mints manage to pack bullion coins without putting fingerprints, scrapes, dents and scratches on them before they even leave the factory.
The Royal Mint are smugly sitting on- and abusing their monopoly of the UK market, especially considering British coins, being sterling, are exempt from capital gains tax. Such things should be an embarrassment for the Mint, especially when compared to the quality of bullion coins from other world mints. But given the Mint seem to have little interest in coins in general and are content to ride off the back of their 800-year old ‘reputation’, it's not surprising that they have such poor quality.
It's a real shame considering how beautiful their designs are. Their coins have so much potential. I certainly won't buy from them until they start caring about their customers and the quality of their products.
But you won’t stand behind precious metal coins that have a denomination like the 2 Oz silver 100 pound coins
It doesn't matter what grade it's supposed to be, it will arrive scratched from the Royal Mint. It's not like we put hard earned money into buying this stuff or anything. Great designs, some of the best, but just really bad QC.
what a great video. cheers lads keep making wonderful coins.
Can you tell the coins are bullion, bullion uncirculated, or proof by simply looking at it? I got some silver coins from someone packaged in a nice fancy box, but it doesn't say about the quality.
Most Proof coins have a frosted finish, which is the most obvious distinguishing feature. Strike quality is also an important factor - Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated coins having a higher definition. If you are unsure, we would advise contacting a BNTA member (www.bnta.net) who would be able to identify the finish and, should you wish, value your coins.
They confuse BULLION, as a quality of strike, with the proper dictionary definition: Gold or silver in the lump or by weight (Oxford). They confuse TOOL, their nickname for DIE, with the proper dictionary definition: Thing designed to help or enable the hand(s) to apply force, esp. in industrial operations. They use a hammer and chisel (tools) to make a "tool" (actually a die). Oh well....
Amazing video quality!!! Compression artifacts are just not existant here. Clearly, this was shot with a high quality camera but does someone know what codec to use to save such flawless quality after editing?
first thing I saw , amazing quality I wonder what they used !?
IMAX
Fantastic video. Plrase make more videos like these.
Thank you for the informative video.
Interesting Facts. Adding to my playlist.
Very educating. Thanks.
Hi I find this kind of thing I find really interesting thanks for the video cheers
Please send your employees to the US Mint so they can provide some training to the US Mint employee's. :)
the jerk
proof=polished stamp; prooflike= have lesser mirror finish than proof, here its called brilliant uncirculated (weird); bullion= have a normal stamp finish like circulating money (no polishing). more or less force to bring the coins in its shape, the raw rounds are polished or not.
very nice - makes me appreciate why these coins are more costly than your average bar or round
Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion coins are virtually the same to me.
more CARE
not if they are over 100 years old haha!!
Top craftsmanship right there.
I wish the U.S. Mint still treated proofs delicately. They are struck twice with polished dies, but besides that don't get that much special treatment. The U.S. makes millions of proofs per year, and plenty with minor errors or imperfections that lower their quality. @The Royal Mint has my respect for producing such fine coins.
Awesome looking coins 🙂
"You see how the edge is just a little rounded?" Uhh nope. I don't have the die physically in front of me and a jeweler's loupe in my eye
素晴らしい職人さんの技術だと思います。
Thanks. Great video
Beutiful but, where can i get these gold beuties, I live in Canada and cannot find them anywhere.
So the difference between Proof and the Average Silver coin is Quality? The % and weight of Value Silver Is the same Right?
Andre Young: Yes....the proof versions are just prettier and more expensive to buy :-)
A lot more work went into a proof it tells you in the video.
Wow they look awesome, I wish I had one of those coins in my collection
What was the exact minting procedure for the recent 2017 Struck on the Day Anniversary Sovereign ? And also the2017 (not sold in any set) Quintuplet Sovereign ? please include handling, number of strikes and frosting, polishing of die and blank please. I am trying to understand why NGC is grading these coins as MS DPL and just can't get my head around t. Thank you.
Let me tell you the difference! The dissapointment for proof is greater once they offer you below spot price for them at the pawn shop, if you ever find yourself in a tight spot (pun intended)!!!
Your not meant to sell proof ones to pawn shop.....that's for bullion and you won't get near spot for them even. You sell proof to collectors only or people who will pay the premium for them. We're talking rare as hens teeth coins here they shouldn't be sold to pawn shop no matter what 😮😮😮
Awesome video! Shine on superstars!
Interesting, I was unaware of what goes into modern silver/gold rounds, nice to see there still is some level of human interaction with the coins. I personally don't care for the mat finish of proof coins, to tell you the truth I always thought they must be the "cheap ones". Whoops I suppose I better put them back into the protective sleeves haha.
My 1st silver coin in my life is a Proof Coin and it come from Royal Mint, the Queen's Beasts 2 oz silver. Then, I have started to collect and invest coins. May I know? Is the version of Queen's Beasts coin a highest quality and beauty till now?
Very Interesting Video!
I've been reading so many comments on various coin collecting forums that the quality control at the royal mint has gotten really poor recently. So many people who've bought proof coins and piedfort coins from the royal mint have reported blemishes, dings and scratches on their coins. It's something to be aware of considering how expensive their proof and piedfort coins are. I really hope the mint reviews their quality control practices and brings it up to the standard required. Buying from them at the moment seems to be a crap-shoot. It's such a shame as they produce some of the most beautiful coin designs in the world (if not the best in the world)...
Get pf70 or pf69 graded ones. Flawless in every sense of the word.
That’s my dad that’s been working there for 11 years (pretty sure it was 11 anyways)
Good to know
this guy is amazing
If you care so much about the finish, why don’t you do something about milk spots on silver coins? It’s a relatively easy problem to solve.
Great video, very interesting content. 👍
Great video!
What I'd like to ask the Royal Mint die makers and QC is how some proofs end up being produced with frosting breaks, particularly the 2020 proof Sovereign. Premium price but still they make their way to customers with flaws.
Remarkable work good job love it 😊
Very cool video!
Its a dream work. Rayal Mint is my favorite. Britania 1Ooz silver its what i want for christmas. This men im movie are awesome. Regards from Poland
Nothing compares to the super high reliefs of ancient greek and magna grecia coins
Wow!! Very big work 👍👍
I need to get a Proof machine! LOL
You better start tackling the Milkspots issue plaguing your coins. Canada aknowledged the issue and fixed it by implementing Mintshield. Why can't you ? It's possible ! Why purchase queens beasts at a premium if they're prone to milkspotting ? Only the proof coins are a safe bet it seems. I am not the only one raising this issue in the community. Even if britannia if the cheapest silver coin in my region i won't buy it, will take maple leaf instead.
I love the Silver Proof Britannias. How come most of the proofs I see coming to us in the US have some sorts of Problems. Dings, Scratches and Milk spotting. A Friend of mine returned some proofs and his replacement coins were in worse condition than the originals. definitely makes me want to skip these coins. just a big concern I am having.
contact the mint your self & ask for hand picked good coins then?
do proofs weigh more?
No their value isn't increased cos of their weight. It's increased cos of the numbers. Increases also happen if you get them graded. Proofs can afford to be graded you want pf69 or pf70s is what I have learnt. Each come with their own rarity Nd there for if you have low mintage you have a very sought after coin more sought after if you have pf70 as that's the highest grade you can get. I got 2 pf69s so I'm happy with that. Just starting out but learnt lots. Still got lots more coins to complete the set some I will never be able to afford for example the pieforts il need them at some point and now they are like 2k each. When I come to get them theyl be around 10k cos everyone will have been brought up and will require you to dig deep if you want them. My 1990 is really sought after with pf69 1 sov. If was pf70 it would be even more special and rarer. We're talking like better quality than the proofs in the video mate so like the best of the best finish basically can't get better or cleaner than it.
I'm impressed
So what quality is the circulation coins?
NintendoSwitchCube64: All versions contain the same amount of gold or silver......the difference is just in the appearance (and price). If you just want gold or silver buy the bullion version....it will be a lot cheaper.
बहुत अच्छी मशीन है इसका प्राइस
Nice! 👏👏👏👏👍
I just got 2 x Charles III in silver.
Mythical Dwergei would be proud.
I love the look of proof coins
Hello royal mint
I never thought much work went into a prof coin
Ive been collection coins now for just over a year
And already got around 150 solid silver proof coins
What an awesome job that would be!!
I want to buy that machine, how can I contact you
Do you think there going to give you professional equipment which could be abused into making counterfeit coins
AUsome stuff!!!
Nice
Tell the boys over there to get their act together...
Lovely!

Why do 2023 Britannias milk then
Overall I really only ikn
Anyone can make a coin, pff.
* watches video, specially that cool guy that does the polishing *
Oh, I understand now.
im going to make myself look stupid here but until watching this i thought Bullion was higher than BU, just sounds like it would be, oh well you live and learn lol
oh god, I love England so much
bene ebos I think the Royal Mint is in Wales. I also love England though.
Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion - Who really knows the difference in these coin finishes? Take a look at our latest video
Apparently NGC doesn't know the difference as they are grading the 2017 strike on the day plain edge as a proof even though it's a BU coin, they are also using the same proof designation on the 5 Sovereign, so proof and BU are just the same yet we pay a premium for a proof coin
All are overpriced. Buy at bullion price if you wish.
As soon i will be a coin maker....
These guys are like the goblins from GRingotts
Where is your quality standard this days? 🤣
these people really worship their queen lol
He km the
I was looking for a benny hill vid,but this was ok too!!!

Poor people stay poor for a reason.
Remember there's more than one way to (fill in the blank)
Is the metal cold, very cold, warm, hot(ish), very hot when struck ?
Hi Kevin, cold blanks are used but the blanks have been pre-annealed to soften. I hope that helps? Many thanks.
