A detailed look at the coinage of the medieval period, and what you can find out in the fields. Unearthed UK presents a detailed look at Medieval coins
Wishing I still lived in Uk. I have a Metal Detector here in Oz. But Sadly Medieval coins are rather thin on the Ground..! Although I did find a Very small nugget of Gold in the Adelaide hills. But mainly my Haul is normally Bottle tops, Ring Pulls and Shotgun Pellets. If I set it for Nonferrous, I basiclly go for a Walk waving a Stick about..!! But Great Collection mate. I have a Small collection that I have bought. And your collection just gets my Knickers in a Twist..!! I left Uk in 1980. But Did find coins in my unmade road in Benfleet essex. And they were everywhere. My Best find, A Half penny token issued by William Pitt Stating 'No Stamp Tax' and 'America' to the Reverse. I didn't identify it until 2010 and Sold it to an American for $700 plus. Thx Ebay..! Love Coins, since I dug up a Roman 'As' whilst planting Runner beans wiv my Dad. But from then on I was Hooked. Great Video and Collection mate..! Waffle on Mate..! Cheers kim in Oz. 😎
DUDE!!! As an English Hammered Silver enthusiast this video makes me SO jealous. I want to move over the pond now, buy a good metal detector and get to work looking for those. Love, Love, LOVE the video! Great stuff there...but you left out the really neat Scottish coins in the lower left hand corner. Why oh WHY? Totally dig me some Scottish pennies with their stars on the reverse. Thank you so much and maybe think about making a short video on Scottish and Irish hammered silvers. Cheers from California...Jeffrey
I am an Ex Pommie ( Half of me still is, being a Dual National.) And I knew the Coins could be Cut for Change but I was unaware of the 'Half Cut.!' Term refers to the Coin and Getting Hammered..! ( Opps forgive the Corny Jest, I couldn't resist.) Great info. Thx. 😎
Great Video, Great Finds. Sadly in Oz the Hammered coins are thin on the Ground down here. ( for some Reason. 😂😂) My Oldest Coin has Been 1836 a Silver Groat of William. Which was a Nice find in the mouth of my Local River. I was Over the Moon as you may imagine. But my Standard find is The $1 and $2. Amazingly the Silver Groat coin was in Better Condition than much of the Modern Coin. The Silver coped well with with the Salt unlike the Modern Change. What a Great collection, well done and Thx for Sharing..! Loving that Noble..! Have Subscribed and a 👍 Cheers in Downunder land. Kim.😎
Really enjoyed that Graeme I still have a long way to go as I have less than a dozen. Thanks again for sharing your finds and knowledge GL&HH Alex🏴👍🏻
Excellent video on the history of hammered coins, which are also my favourite finds. More vids like this at times when we can't go detecting would be very welcome. Thanks. Kev in South Lincs.
I love your RUclips content it's very informative , educational, really nice to see your passion in the hobby you pursue and sharing with others. Season's greetings paul
Darn! That's a lot of money from England just found metal detecting!!! As a younger collector, I've still managed to buy some early English coins, but I would not be able to believe even holding a gold noble! I sadly live in America where the chance of finding any coin from England is about as high as the chance of finding a penguin in Brazil. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to go on a trip over to England, once they're letting tourists in again, and buy a good metal detector in search of anything that's English coinage!
hey Graeme , great video .. it had my mouth watering for all that hammered silver !! lol And i want that Noble so bad i can actually taste it !!! Anyways, i have a Groat on the way , its an Edward III with the FULL rim with the reeding /hatch marks ! the face is a bit flat but its a beauty . Cant wait to get it. Great video buddy!
G'day I really enjoyed watching this mate. I'm from Australia sadly this historic value in coins isn't anything like Europe. But I have to settle for small gold nuggets instead 😜. But again I think it's a fantastic show and look forward to watching many more. Cheers. Patrick.
I collect numismatic coins late milled is my main area. I do have a Elizabeth the 1st shilling from 1582_84 not the best condition but the history of it makes me wonder were its been and who held it ! Thise gold ones are really nice !
Great videos really good for identifying things just found my 4th hammered coin an Irish Edward 1 hammered so chuffed can’t believe the number you have found amazing.
Really hope so been detecting over 20 years now got a equinox 800 and seem to be finding them a lot easier need to go on a couple of rallies further afield to get some good history could you recommend any? Thanks
Thanks for sharing such a cracking collection, Graeme. Some great info in there, too. As a matter of interest, some of the coins looked to have been cleaned but others hadn't. Do you like to leave some in "as found" condition?
Fantastic an engrossing educational video! I dont detect as much now but its the hammies I most enjoy finding. I don't know enough about identifying them so I found your explanation of reading the legends particularly informative. Like you I love the medieval groats but only ever found four! In the last year I found a gold angel but its rolled up almost into a tube, so not sure if its Henry 7th or 8th. Do you think this was done deliberately? Maybe as some kind of votive offering?. Hope you plan to do more of these, absolutely fascinating! Cheers Andy
Hi Graham , fine collection my friend , do you know why they double struck coins ? I do to much bloody Mead mate ! LOL , nice and informative as usual , got my order on time nice one my friend , speak soon regards Rob .
Fascinating video of mediaeval hammered coins but can you tell me what the significance between a short class and Longcross is,many thanks and best regards
Hi Colin, you solved it yourself in your question, one has a short cross on the reverse of the coin, the other a long cross that extends to the edge of the coin
I often ponder on this subject, the fact that people drunk beer over water because it was safer than the water along with people not having glasses (alot of people will of had bad eye sight) and allso the world was alot darker in them days with there only being candles as a source of light you can easily see why so many hammered coins come up, allthough i havnt had 1 in a couple week😂😂
Great video, however a Noble was 80 pennies, Half Noble was 40 pennies. Your collection outweighs mine. All I have is 2 groats an Edward III and Henry VI, a Henry VIII groat and then a pile of Elizabethan silver and a Edward VI shilling.
Can you recommend a reference book? I'm looking for something that includes details such as size, weight, and composition / fineness of various coins from this period. Thank you. 👍
Hi, I found this information so interesting but I have a question.....Where did the silver come from during Henry III's reign to strike so many coins ?, I'm researching Henry III coins for myself and my collection, if so many coins were minted that would have taken a huge amount of silver. Thank you.

That jeweller made an amazing job stretching that bent half noble, it is almost unnoticeable
Indeed!
Beautiful collection. Someday I’ll add hammered pieces to my collection.
Many thanks juan

Many thanks john, one or two have been given the treatment as they were bkackened but a quick wash under the tap is usually sufficient

Great video.
Do you think they used snips(scissors) to cut the pennys, or use a hammer and something like a chisel to strike the pennys?
Hi, they most certainly used snips and sharp ones too!!
I collect cut farthings and halves from Tealby to Long Cross. Unfortunately living in America I have to BUY them because they ain't in our ground 😆
Keep enjoying them bill
never found a cut quarter,,,, swinging to fast probably.. good vid
Not many here in Cumbria mate
