it's a shame they made so little use of the mechanic in ER, because managing to break out of a grab is always a satisfying consolation prize and a way to reclaim some agency in the otherwise frustrating and passive process of getting grabbed i found one of my favorite grab escapes in my most recent playthrough of bloodborne, when being ambushed by a fish-person in the fishing hamlet. they knock you down and start just absolutely hacking your face apart with a cleaver, but if you manage to break out, you block the blade with your forearms and shove the enemy off of you to get back up. the fact that the grab itself is so viscerally violent and the escape is such a firm "taking back control" moment makes it feel really cool to pull off. probably my favorite time I've been grabbed in a fromsoft game!
Thatd just make grabs a net positive. A better solution is taking nioh 2s idea and letting you parry grabs. Honestly the more idea they take from nioh 2 the better the game period lol

The lampreys have one of the most interesting interactions I’ve seen in a souls game, because when the player gets paralyzed, it’s not the lamprey that paralyzed you that teleports over you. That one always stays in the same place (and I think it’s just one that can paralyze you but it has insane range). Instead one of the surrounding lampreys will teleport over you. I don’t think I’ve seen a similar interaction in any of these games before.

Point of order, the Lamprey grab doesn't teleport it to you; it summons a new Lamprey that's a different color. If the dark one that fires the gravity paralysis attack is the only one left alive, it can continue to summon more pale Lampreys every time it hits with the orb.
Do the grabs with the higher than 40 escape hp have any animations though? I can only imagine how cool some of them would look if realized in that way...like Malenia's upward thrust being countered with your weapon or somesuch.

Well, I'm glad I haven't gotten to the Lampreys yet and I'm glad I have a heads up about the projectile. Gives me immediate flashes to Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. Wonderful. I honestly never really try that hard to escape a grab. I mean, I'll instinctively button mash, but I usually still never escape. I usually just go ahead and expect death when I get grabbed and I'm more surprised if the grab didn't actually kill me. With the Souls games and Bloodborne it's easier for me to tell I'm going to survive a grab or not. Harder to do that with Elden Ring.
@@ColonelSanders17 Sounds about like what I would expect with that sort of attack. I can't count how many times I got grabbed by the similar attack that the brainsuckers in Bloodborne have, along with the similar attack the ones in Latria in Demon's Souls have.

I had no idea you could escape from any grabs until this video. Although I've definitely done it a few times on accident, always followed by a quick, "was that a bug?"
Me as a magic ninja… “They can grab you?!” lmao Seriously.. no joke, I didn’t even know that so many enemies could grab you. This is interesting, I thought only bosses and a handful of big ones like runebears could. I play as a fast paced “magic slinger” using quick spells, bloodhound step, and dodging. I hit and run, I cast until they get close and then I dodge and step, gain some distance and shoot. I also use a magic Shamshir for when things require a good poke or cut and I use the Carian blades a lot too. There’s nothing as satisfying as slinging spells, letting my enemy get close and then teleporting all around them. Once I see an opening I charge up a gigantic magic sword and slam it down on their head! Mwuahaha! Seriously though, I’ve won so many pvp fights because people assume I’m a long range mage and they make the mistake of trying to close the gap and then they get hit with the “close up magic” as I like to call it… haha Point is, I think I’ve only ever been grabbed by an enemy like 3 times… one was the abductor, one was a rune bear that somehow snuck up on me, and I think once by those guys that pull the carts. Once I developed my playstyle and got into my groove I became nearly untouchable. Edit: Nope.. I forgot I got grabbed by the first worm face I ever encountered… I must’ve blocked it from my memory because it was terrifying and had me paranoid forever! I had just defeated the tree sentinel outside of the volcano manor and I was just exploring the area looking for loot before officially entering the castle and I randomly got snatched up off of Torrent and eaten. Some Cthulhu monster just appeared out of fucking nowhere and ate me! I went back super paranoid wondering where it came from, because it wasn’t there.. I killed the enemies and looked around, I thought maybe it dropped from above or something… I was losing my damn mind until I actually saw a Zullie video where she explained the mimics and I realized I must’ve somehow triggered that random transformation without even knowing it. That encounter had me paranoid for weeks until I saw that video! Lmao how did I forget about this!? I genuinely must have just erased the trauma. Hahaha
that's cool and all, but as long as there's more than one man-fly, there will always be one ready to grad you right after you mash out of the first one
I feel like one thing this video missed is that escaping a grab often leaves your character in a standing position or at least much easier position to recover from. Grabs will often leave you prone on the ground to take even more damage.
You gotta spam the roll button when you're getting up from the ground, it gives you a faster recovery than letting the animation of standing up play out
@@Mazapine Don't do this if you were knocked down by a Dragon's Breath though (PvE) it makes you get hit twice. The knockdown gives some Iframes, so wait a little bit before rolling out in these situations (also applies in a few boss fights like Hoarah Loux if you get knocked down earlly).
Of course, if you are playing on Streamer Mode, (that is, Challenge Runner mode), even a little lick of flame in Godfrey's arena can be an inescapable embrace.
I knew I wasn't crazy when I couldn't figure out which button was to break free early so I rapid fired all of them and it worked. 😂 Thanks for the actual data behind my madness.

There are way too many different types of poisons and rot in ER its crazy...Yet poison still isn't viable even with all of these different types.
Poor Zullie getting absolutely slobbered for the sake of our amusement here
But one thing is for sure, Zullie loves Bear Hugs. 😁👉👈
We thank zullie for her sacrifice there being thrown around for knowledge
Making out with the giant wormface is like enrichment for her.
i really hated this fact with the furnace golems, with how broken their grab is and how damaging it is. ive had attempt where i'd actually deplete my stamina with the escape mashing and id still be stuck and die.
grabbing zullie copilation, gets weird fast
So nice of Zullie to get mauled multiple times for our entertainment.
It wouldve been so awesome if there were command grabs like in fighting games. If you hit the right input, you escape instantly, and maybe even do a reversal on smaller enemies.
So like Tekken? Most FGs I've played command grabs are just untechable.
@@AnEveryManJack like tekken yeah.
parrying a grab basically?
Basically just Tekken and Toy Fighter do that
it's a shame they made so little use of the mechanic in ER, because managing to break out of a grab is always a satisfying consolation prize and a way to reclaim some agency in the otherwise frustrating and passive process of getting grabbed
i found one of my favorite grab escapes in my most recent playthrough of bloodborne, when being ambushed by a fish-person in the fishing hamlet. they knock you down and start just absolutely hacking your face apart with a cleaver, but if you manage to break out, you block the blade with your forearms and shove the enemy off of you to get back up. the fact that the grab itself is so viscerally violent and the escape is such a firm "taking back control" moment makes it feel really cool to pull off. probably my favorite time I've been grabbed in a fromsoft game!
They should expand on this mechanic in later titles, allowing you to deal a special “escape attack” if you successfully escape a grab.
Like drinking a double explosive Physik flask before getting nommed to make their attack literally blow up in their face.
Thatd just make grabs a net positive. A better solution is taking nioh 2s idea and letting you parry grabs.
Honestly the more idea they take from nioh 2 the better the game period lol
Only if they actually change the engine and start following with Sekiro's. The Demon's Souls mechanics are too primitive to keep up with actually dynamic gameplay.
@@chromasus9983 Sekiro is on the same engine
@@Sharkamfss Well, same basic game mechanics then, whichever way you want to put it. Point is, the player character cannot remain so static, so slow and "basic", while the enemy and boss design becomes so hyper-advanced.
I like how solidly you see the mystical game world and the code, mixing commentaries about both
I need a spiked armor suit so the goddamn hippos take damage when they dare to nom me!
Also it would be cool if you could swap places with your mimic tear. So you can. Have it get eaten instead. Lol.
0:58 wait a minute...you mean all these years of playing DS3 trying to break out of grabs, and wondering if it was even working, was because i play with mouse and keyboard AND IT LITERALLY DOESN'T WORK? ffs fromsoft...
Rip XD
But you could with the mouse on elden ring at least?
same, wtf they were thinking
Ok, but who plays souls games with m&k!?
@@RolandTheJabberwocky every sane person on pc without platform inferiority complex? Why are you still spreading sonyboy myth from the demon souls/ds1 times about m+kb being bad?
@@RolandTheJabberwocky me.
I know that Let Me Solo Her does too
Point of order, the Lamprey grab doesn't teleport it to you; it summons a new Lamprey that's a different color. If the dark one that fires the gravity paralysis attack is the only one left alive, it can continue to summon more pale Lampreys every time it hits with the orb.
Don’t worry in NG+ the damage is so high all grabs are fatal regardless of how much you button mash
Should've leveled vigor
Lol, hey, the "punish Zullie simulator" is lookin pretty dope.
Do the grabs with the higher than 40 escape hp have any animations though? I can only imagine how cool some of them would look if realized in that way...like Malenia's upward thrust being countered with your weapon or somesuch.
she said she couldn't find animations for them
I think you should be able to break out of all grabs if you can smash the buttons REALLY fast
100 ms limit per input makes most deadly grabs impossible to break out of, which makes sense, cus then you'd be able to use auto-clickers or some shit like that and make all grabs useless
@@SimplCup The kinds of people that would use auto-clickers to never take damage from grabs would probably just make their characters completely invulnerable instead, tbh.
@@SimplCup Just saying, if someone can or would use an aouto clicker for that im pretty sure they would just go the extra step and use godmode, since using an auto clicker would already be cheating.
@@SimplCup Might as well cheat at that point. It's a single player pve game first and foremost. Stop treating it like some competitive game that everyone has to metagame it.
I love how Zullie gives a detailed description to every grab attacks introduced 😂
I wish for being able to immediatly escape a grab if wielding a dagger, maybe inflincting some minor damage before escaping. The idea is that a small blade in hand is perfect to stab limbs/maws of whatever grabbed you.
Would give specific utility to daggers as well.
That long-range grapple attack is a pain. No matter how much i mash my controller, i can never break out before i get nabbed by a lamprey.
@@ColonelSanders17 Sounds about like what I would expect with that sort of attack. I can't count how many times I got grabbed by the similar attack that the brainsuckers in Bloodborne have, along with the similar attack the ones in Latria in Demon's Souls have.
How many Igons would it take to kill bayle?
With a HAIL OF HARPOONS?
Never knew you can break out of a grab! Now I'll be mashing my way out every time, no matter if I have an actual chance or not.
1:18 damn
Zullie having a sponsor read section is absolutely cursed. I was gobsmacked.
_If only I could _*_[Grab]_*_ Rannie's hand's for longer then just the cutscenes let me..._
An 8 minute Zullie The Witch video is a blessing from Queen Marika herself
You should test what happens if you use mods to set malenia’s grab escape HP to like 5 and see what the game will do when you escape it in midair after being thrown up.
2:09 to skip the advert
Never knew you could escape those, I always just accepted my pain and waited until it was done. Well I'll keep that in mind when I'll finally do a NG+!
I wish Rellana had a grab attack 🥵
Poor Zulie, getting squeezed, bitten, and thrown around in the name of science.
You can break out of grabs?
Yes indeed going all the way back to the mimic in DS1 after enough times getting eaten by them you eventually start mashing buttons like crazy and you figure out you can actually Escape
I've played every one of these games all the way through and learned today you can mash out of the grabs...
Was wondering this last night as every man-fly spammed grab attacks on the way to Midra.
42 second gang
1 min gang 😂
11 second gang. 🤓
I always love how the grab escape typically has the character landing on their feet, sometimes in a 'you fucker' stance
Every grab attack just makes me wonder about the PTSD of the Tarnished. Most of these are things I would never want to have to live with the memory of experiencing, or the utter body horror of wondering how and why I survived such a thing.
if there is an objective mistake in elden ring it's that it doesn't properly teach that grabs are escapable and jump is OP.
I mastered grab escapes as a kid during family gatherings
I think its fine that most have too high an HP value to escape, seems a simpler solution than making code for inescapable grabs specifically rather than just ticking it to unreachable levels, kind of like Malenias rot resist
So the endgame grab with Griffith and his pet project/ husband-to-be is just Inescapable?
Several hundred hours; never knew this was a thing
Having played Dark Souls 1-3 +DLCs and Elden Ring + DLC, I had NO IDEA YOU COULD ESCAPE SOME GRAB ATTACKS
Zullie: The Rune Bears can grab the players in a literal bear hug.
Me: Nice
The lamprey paralyzing projectile was so obnoxious. I have a clip of me getting chain paralyzed then grabbed only for it to hit me again as I kill the lamprey in front of me for a minute and a half
One of the few creators for whom I just let the ads play so as not to begrudge them the sponsorship money.
I had no idea you could escape from any grabs until this video. Although I've definitely done it a few times on accident, always followed by a quick, "was that a bug?"
Me as a magic ninja… “They can grab you?!” lmao
Seriously.. no joke, I didn’t even know that so many enemies could grab you.
Mwuahaha!
Seriously though, I’ve won so many pvp fights because people assume I’m a long range mage and they make the mistake of trying to close the gap and then they get hit with the “close up magic” as I like to call it… haha
Point is, I think I’ve only ever been grabbed by an enemy like 3 times… one was the abductor, one was a rune bear that somehow snuck up on me, and I think once by those guys that pull the carts.
Hahaha
2+ years later i learn that there are animations for grab escape.
I really enjoy these videos.
Years of playing souls games with mouse and keyboard, so this is the first time I’m even hearing of this.
that's cool and all, but as long as there's more than one man-fly, there will always be one ready to grad you right after you mash out of the first one
Big thanks to Zullie for taking all that punishment for us lol
Of course, if you are playing on Streamer Mode, (that is, Challenge Runner mode), even a little lick of flame in Godfrey's arena can be an inescapable embrace.
I knew I wasn't crazy when I couldn't figure out which button was to break free early so I rapid fired all of them and it worked. 😂 Thanks for the actual data behind my madness.
Notably, brainsuckers in Bloodborne can loop their grab just like in Street Fighter. Mashing out of their grab will put them in a longer recovery state and prevent them from doing this, and also reduce the amount of Insight you lose from 2 to 1
The Briar Armor Set and the Mantle of Thorns sorcery should affect grabs, but that's my opinion.
zullie you rock, please never stop making these videos
Thanks, Zullie" Now I know to stop mashing buttons every time the Furnace Golems grab me, because it's pointless.
I've played these games for 1000s of hours over the years, including ER. Mad that this video was the first time I've seen that Demi human queen grab. Must be killing them too quickly to ever have it happen.
If there's one thing that's stayed consistent about grab attacks throughout the series, it's that a vast majority of them look extraordinarily painful
to see the day where even zullie is inundated by ad deals
I had no idea Demi-Human Queens have a berserk mode. I think I've killed all of them fast enough that I've literally never seen them drop into that stance
Most wondrous toil, Lady Zullie. As ever, thou dost excel.
IMO, any grab that only grabs the body and doesn't restrict the arm should be escapable, but rather than mashing any button, you Mash the attack Button to smack yourself off of the grab
Finally an answer on what buttons actually matter for escaping grabs! I've never known if it was just R1/2/L1/2 or every button
