Like an actual... wolf/dog: Very strong back and sides and very flexible but unprotected abdomen which is not exposed anyway. allows him to high mobility and speed while it also offers protection to his exposed body.
I like when a history expert can go "yeah this armor wouldn't work. But it's sick, so 8/10." Especially when they speculate on the character that wore the armor and get close to the mark, shows the quality of the design language.
I saw 2 of these videos but it was about weapons, the other one was talking about how twinblades are unusable and the other ones favorite weapon is ghizas wheel💀
I love how a bunch of the parts that made certain areas weak made sense with their origins. Namely Maliketh and the Bloodhound sets, since their animalistic stances and movements require that flexibility.
and it makes sense Bloodhounds has some mismatching of parts, they seem to stay long in the field and probably don't have the faculty to repair it themselves, presuming they are beastmen like from Azula.

shout out to the historical references and images that went in too. like that tiny painting of a knight with a winged helm from some page in a manuscript. appreciate the attention to detail
I love how he basically told you the lore of the crucibel knights, by describing their armour as melding two things together of european and japanese armour, when they are off age where things weren't as seperate but more one whole thing. Super cool
i mean, its in the name, crucible - things get melted together in there. In german they are called "Schmelztiegelritter" this video makes me aprreciate all the armor i never wore more than i thought =)
In fairness to Radahn's helmet: the guy is enormous. The number of beings in the setting tall enough for that kind of design flaw in the helmet to even be relevant for is...tiny. There's also the fact that the horns are possibly an homage to the Fallingstar Beasts (which Radahn's gravity magic holds back from the Lands Between), showing how he has conquered them.
Pretty sure he’s rating these sets by how useful they are for the tarnished specifically Like with Maliketh’s set, the chest is a problem for a human while for Maliketh it isn’t because he’s on all fours so his chest isn’t a vulnerable spot
Just noticed the shinguards on the Bloodhound set are turned around. It makes sense for the Bloodhound Knights because they are on all fours, so it protects the exposed calf. Obviously once you get it, keeping it backwards is kinda dumb, but that is clearly an oversight by the developers.
@@connorwilcox146 knee would be exposed, but they should function still. It's not like they'd be more curved or anything. It's literally a shinguard just turned 180.
@@glorytoukraine5524 My understanding was that the Tarnished are descendants of Godfrey that have lived, fought, and died on other worlds. After death they are recalled and resurrected in the Lands Between rather than go to their "normal destination", due to their special relation to grace and Marika.
i think malikeths armore is chain around the gut is because he is a literal beast so he needs the mobility around the midsection so it wasnt really meant for human use
Yes. Maliketh himself is a very skinny beast with long limbs, and you can tell that the vast majority of the protection of his armour is around the limbs and flanks.
There's certainly a few of these suits of armour that are clearly meant for other people and consequently works better for them. Take the odd proportions of the commoners found in elden ring with their elongated necks for example. The helmet makes more sense for them to wear than it does for us. Same thing with Blaidd's set, he doesn't wear a helmet (as strange of a decision as it is). His set does not come with the wolf mask. It is simply a complementary item as far as I understand.
Considering wolves can't sweat and have to pant to cool down finding a helmet that fits the weird shape of their head and gives enough freedom to move would be difficult. Dont really want to dull that sense of hearing either
or malikeths armor and blood hound armor having little protection on the belly, well those fighters stand on all fours like a beast so there belly is low to the ground and very very hard to hit so why put armor their, it would be like putting plates on the bottom of your feet.
The wolf mask is considered part of Blaidd's set, but you are correct in that it's found separately from the set, on a body of a would-be assassin trying to pretend to be Blaidd.
@@ForeverLaxx It is not part of the armour Blaidd wears, so I don't consider it to be a part of the set. My disagreements with it is almost entirely narrative and language-based though. From a meta-logic perspective it makes perfect sense to lump them together as "this is how the player character can look like this NPC". From a narrative and language perspective it makes no sense to consider another mask made for and worn by someone else as a part of a set.
I would love a part two to this. Especially to include some of the big ones like the Scaled set and Bull Goat. Plus maybe some individual pieces like the Marais Mask (one of my favorite pieces for its Baldwin the Leper-esque vibes). Maybe hit him with the Land of Reeds armors and the Ronin set. Also, the good old Knight set.
@@howardlin3585 Yeah, I'd love to see the mundane footsoldier armours talked about. I went through my whole first playthrough wearing only the chainmail set, because I liked the pragmatic aesthetic so much.

Man, I've watched a number of these 'expert reacts' type videos in the past and I just have to say, this is up there with the greats. The presentation, the stylized introduction to each set, and the commentary all seem focused and well put together. Others have mentioned this already, but it is definitely true, absolutely a hidden gem of a channel and I hope the algorithm picks you up because I feel a lot of people would agree.
I adore the Haligtree Knight set, along with the other regional knight sets as theyre all almost identical outside of the colour of the metal and the jacket. The helmet is the only thing Im not too in love with, but everything else is perfect for me. Really gives off the aesthetic of a noble knight who's been using the armor for a *very* long time. And despite maintainance, all the action its seen has left it looking slightly sorry for itself on the surface, but still protecting its wearer just as well as it apways has.
For that very reason, being our shared distaste for the helm(s), I like to wear one of the hoods depending on the color palette of the rest of my armor.
I would like the helmet on some different armor because i find the regional knight sets boring except the helmet, which i think is wasted on armor that looks comparatively bland. Not knocking the set just not my favorite i like the ruin sentinel set from ds3
@gooseman3132 I’ve found that the height of the helmet can be counteracted by using an equally strange body armour- the exile’s armour, the one with the red scrarf that wraps up waaay too high. Pretty much everyone drags on the helmet, but I thinn it looks really good when paired with the exile armour, especially those with a plume such as the cuckoo knight helmet or the redmane knight helmet. Despite both having rather weak stats, I think I was still using it even approaching Malenia!
I really dig that the expert pronounces all the characters' names correctly. I have the impression that he's played the game, and that's awesome even if he actually hasn't.
Not much of a gamer thing. He works at a museum, so he has an obligation to know how stuff is pronounced, and I appreciate that as someone who is also rather OCD about the pronunciations of names, since so many people, especially a lot of gamers, just don't do them right. It really irks me that people STILL mispronounce Blaidd's name, even though it's said properly several times throughout the game...
literally the best 'expert reacts to armour' video i've seen. Usually the expert is either uncharitable or unknowledgeable about the media getting discussed, or the pictures and clips they're provided with dont really give them a whole lot to work with. Dr Forgeng seemed to have been given really good visual material and also understood enough about elden ring to make good in game judgements while applying historical knowledge. Great video, I hope you do a part 2.
I grew up going to the Higgins Armory as often as I could convince my parents to take me. Really cool to see you talking about this game I love so much.
Just like the hound knight set, maliketh's armor is made for a mostly quadruped creature. And thus the belly is not easily hit whilst other areas are more vulnerable and thus better protected.
Very great video and I love how Dr. Forgeng was able to criticize the armor while still recognizing the things the sets exceed at. I also particularly appreciate the effort put into understanding the context of the armor before reviewing it.
Regarding the bloodhound armor, the bloodhounds act feral like a beast and they fight in a cuadrupedal posture so the neck and calves dont get exposed but the back does. That posture fixes the neck problem and it makes the helmet aerodynamic and able to deflect foward slashes. So the fantasy element kinda fixes the irl problems the armor has.
Tbf the neck still doe get a little exposed compared to the calves, so his critique of the neck protection at tye very least is not out of this world. I do agree that in-context it is a much better set than what was criticized, but at the same time we have to reason: if we're thinking about it as a set for a regular knight(tarnished's version), it's barely functional, if the bloodhound's, while definitely on the cheaper side of what it should be given the bloodhounds reputation, a far better suited armor for them.
So for social gatherings the Tarnish would be using the magical Carian Armor but for expected combat and field use they would be using the Crucible Axe Knight Armor and Blaidd's armor depending on the environment with the Haligtree Armor as a backup.
Imagine Gideon telling him "yeah now you can go see the two fingers" and th tarnished going all the way to raya lucaria just to get the fancy armor set for the occasion of meeting the two fingers and then... They're two literal fingers.
@@iota-09 hey at least the Tarnish would be dressed for the occasion. Imagine meeting such an important entity in sloppy, slaped together armor. That just wouldn't do.
Something to note about the carian knight set, is that it was worn by magical knights, rather than standard knights. They were a very small elite force, and I feel the fancy design of their armor thematically fits with their wizarding nature. Gems and embossed fabric, much like a very nice wizards robes
Mad respect for Jeffrey, really love how he points out the details of the armors, using smart and accessible terminology. He also seems to respect the game by criticizing some armors but also keeping in mind that it's a fantasy videogame. Really loved the video and learned a lot of things, all love and support for Jeffrey!
This guy was great. I love that he shows immense respect for the players, the design team, and the game itself. You could just feel his love and compassion for his craft and almost sense his excitement for seeing an amazing game taking so much inspiration from history.
One of the best expert reacts videos i've seen at least for the souls series, props to dr.forgeng and to jahmez for offering the correct information to address the critiques as well as up-close footage.
Props to the in-game footage recorder & editor. Great footage, and great attention to detail with things such as combining the battery comment with footage of doing a lightning spell. I'd love to see a part 2!
I remember going to the Higgins Armory Building with my middle school class and getting to see a demonstration of the zweihander being used in a full suit of armor. It's super cool that somehow it's now come back in the form of the collection's curator breaking down armor from one of my favorite games!
Something that unfortunately happened only recently as far too many "experts" are too close-minded to comprehend the multimedia context of a... Japanese-mafe game set in a somewhat western style fantasy world where beasts and monsters are almost more common than humanoids, which are still wonk and generally undead. Yeah They just forget about the themes and aesthetics is what i mean. Glad to see that changing with the times.
The information given is obviously priceless, but I have to really commend the style and editing in the video. You usually don't get something that feels this scholarly adapted this well to the RUclips format. Feels like it's usually one or the other. Bravo.
Maliketh's armor makes a lot of sense for maliketh, though. He fights on all fours, most of the time low to the ground. The plate armor is where he needs it the most, the scales makes sense because he is facing the enemy, and the scales being positioned the way they are would make the blade slide down, away from his chest. And chain on the stomach for constant tummy scritches, but also to save on money because it shouldn't be exposed to an enemy anyways.
One of the best Elden Ring videos. Period. The knowledge and perspective into The Tarnished life and experiences was the cherry on top. A wonderful video.
I love how Dr. Forgeng shows respect to the work made by the artists by explaining what he likes and finds interesting about the designs even when he recognizes the impraticality of some of the parts. Shows he's not just an expert in armor and medieval combat but also someone with a deep appreciation for art, as his position as museum curator suggests. It's sometimes overlooked how much artist work there's behind a game. Several excellent artists work for the industry and there's clearly a lot of research behind Souls games, which makes it all the more interesting listening to an expert recognizing the source of those influences. He also has a sense of humour, which I appreciate.
Maliketh's armor focused on his bestial agility. He could protect his belly area well enough, be it staying on all fours or dodging - meanwhile anything less flexible would restrict his ability to contort and twist his torso nearly 180 degrees as he commonly does. And the spiked elements are more likely to disarm the opponent than lead to injury. With his speed, you're unlikely to land a precise thrust, and likely to get the sword caught between the plates and ripped out of your hands as his full body momentum opposes your hands strength. Bad armor for a human, great for a sleek beast.
The reason Carian knight armor has one 1 steel gauntlet on the left hand is because it is mainly used by Carian spellblades who wield their staff in the left hand. their right hand usually is holding the Carian knight sword (which has a attack that blocks and then strikes) which is their main close quarters weapon. So while their right hand is slashing and stabbing the left more vulnerable hand is protected.
Great video that judges armors based on actual use in the actual setting and real life while also taking into account aesthetical charm and other factors that could have impacted the design decision. You've earned a subscriber!
I am sure that someone else has already commented this, but the scrawny horse (Leonard) doesn't actually carry all of that weight. Radahn learned gravity manipulation so that he could ride on Leonard without hurting him.
Just incredible content. Dr Forgeng is an excellent speaker and really seems to appreciate the fine line between fun and functional for games like this. It is fascinating hearing his input on the potential historical inspirations of the armour sets, and at the same time hearing the appreciation for the rule of cool when speaking about cosplay or ceremonial armour. As others have stated too, the editing really brings a lot of life into this video. You and your guests are doing an absolutely incredible job, and you should be proud :)
fun fact: Maliketh's armor is meant for a quadruped and as such, the softer/flexible armor on the belly is actually going to be scraping against the ground (potentially) so it makes sense to not have a solid plate there because that would push against them should they hit the ground a bit harder than expected. However, the limbs and back are all solid interlocking plates that articulate in a way that would make sense for a dog or a cat. Edited to pre-empt pedantry.
Id love to see you do a collab with channels like Scholagladatoria, or Skallagrim, or Shadiversity. Even a big livestream, with all of you going over all the armors and weapons in Elden Ring, would be really fun.
These videos remind me of musicians reacting to undertale songs, the brilliant armour design expresses everything about the wearer the same way that toby foxes music describes everything the character whose theme it is
The thing about Radahn that you may not know is that horse is his companion since he was smaller. General Radahn learned gravity magic not to fight, but so he can keep his beloved horse.
Lovely and informative video with one small quibble; Blaidd *The Half Wolf* is not "wearing" a wolf's head. That is in actual fact his real head. The helm worn by the tarnished was fashioned for an impostor seeking to assassinate Lady Rani, whom he serves.
The only sets I would wish for him to take a look at, should he return, would be the cleanrot set and Melania’s set. I’m curious to see what his opinion is on those two sets of armor.
It would be really amazing watch a playthrough of the whole game with Dr. Forgeng analyzing the architecture and equipment and how they fit with the lore pointing the real history and myths inspirations
Extremely good commentary! And the editing is on par, I should say. Please do a part 2! There are so many more interesting pieces to cover, namely the Banished knight set - was very surprised to not see it here.
Blaidd standing on top of the Ruins in Liurnia made me chuckle. I can see the love put into this video. Great camera work and support with the visuals.
Fun thing is Leonard (which is radahns horse) doesn’t carry radahn. Radahn learned gravity magic for 2 reasons 1 to arrrest the stars (which really hurt his mother and her ilk) and 2 so, he could keep his scrawny yet brave horse. Radahn is the same as malena their both stagnation personified 1 wants to break away from it and radahn refuses to change. Even being rotted and mind gone he still is arresting the stars on behalf of the golden order and his father. Really cool quote from him is “I was a champions cub. Now I’m the lord of the battlefields lion.” Which shows his tremendous respect for Godfrey. That’s the reason he has the lions on his armor since Godfrey took the beast regent serosh and that’s sort of his sigil. Elden Ring has so many tiny details
I loved going to Higgins Armory as a kid, and I was so sad when it closed. For years, I never knew what happened to all the exhibits, but now I know I can go see them in Worcester! Thank you so much!
As a Massachusetts resident, I miss the old Higgins Armory museum, where all the exhibits were on display in a distinctive L-shaped room inspired by the great hall of a medieval castle, with banners and stained glass. I'm glad the exhibits found a new home in the Worcester Art museum, but I'll miss the feel of the old museum.
While not my hands down favourite (I’m an unbearable sucker for the Kaiden Set) I really appreciate that the Carian Knight armour looks like it’s designed to be worn by someone who’s not intent on fighting as a traditional knight; rather a warrior who adopts foreign forms and aesthetics to more closely resemble that archetypal armour style while still prioritising their own accustomed function. As far as knightly plate armour goes in Elden Ring, the Carian Set really doesn’t seem to be nearly as protective at a glance. It is, as pointed out in the video, that would fit closer to a tournament or party piece. Yet, it’s absolutely covered in what I assume are shards of glintstone (the game’s catalyst for arcane magic) as well as having one gauntlet that is not obstructed by metal, likely to accommodate the utilisation of spells. Such a cool design
Amazing B-roll footage and your integrity in the knowledge of the game was surprising. Did not expect your insight into what the 'Tarnished' would be seen using, as little emphasis was placed on that aspect of the character in the game and it has actually enhanced how I see armor as a whole in Elden Ring. Well met. :)
I'd love to see you make a video with this gentleman again! No matter what game, he's just pretty cool and fun to listen to, and you edit these videos exquisitely!
It's super cool to see a breakdown on these armor sets! As someone who's obsessed with medieval fantasy I love to do research into inadequacies of my favorite armors, and videos like this are a great way to learn! If you do a part 2, I can't wait to see the Banished Knight and Veteran's Armor, as the banished are my personal favorite faction in the game!
should've done veteran's armor, did any of you guys realize in-game that the gauntlet on the right is mitted, and the left is more like a finger gauntlet? it's a very small detail, and im sure some other armors might also have this too, but thinking about it more, it's a very overlooked feature that i haven't see anyone else comment about. (and by "i haven't seen anyone else comment about" i meant i just looked at like, the first 100 replies and called it a day, hope i was right) edit: underrated channel, like and subscription added
Radahn Set only has sandals because Radahn doesn't have feet (just noticed it), Maliketh's armor has weak chest protection because he walks on all fours with his chest to the ground, Bloodhound armor has plate covering the "back" of the lower legs, Haligtree Knight helmets are tall and narrow because the knights themselves have slightly elongated necks and arms (seems to be a common side-effect from being near the Erdtree).
Fantastic editing. Great clips that pertain to the topic at hand. The host was very knowledgeable and well spoken. U can tell he's a fan of the game. You earned a sub can't wait to see more from u
Unlike most expert reactions on elden ring this guy seems to actually have looked in depth at the pieces in question, looking at ingame models instead of just the image on the wiki or something. Great thoroughness
As someone that lives close to Worcester ,MA I may take a visit to this museum. I'm in RI so this is about a hour drive. Good video though I like learning the inspiration for the design choices
Maliketh's armor dose make sense when you consider he's not really bipedal. When you're fighting on all fours, use flexible chain and scales underneath, and plate mail on the back. Someone pointed out that the Bloodhound Knights have the armor on their leg joints reversed. Same situation here.
I absolutely love the trend of experts reacting to pop culture. It's so cool to get a glimpse into their world as they get a glimpse into ours. See you in the Lands Between, doc!
This honestly is one of my favorite videos in the last year. PLEASE have Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng sit down and talk about more Soulsborne armour. Great video, informative points and very fitting editing!
I'm sure someone has already pointed it out but for the Crucible Axe armor the decorative wings on the helmet and elbow protection are meant to represent the double-sided axe that the lord to which the Crucible Knights are sworn to wields
"could be convinced to give it a ten if I can work around my issues with the helmet" - every videogame armor set ever :D Great video, the character and cultural influences as well as the functionality were really neat to see, and I love the amount of both game footage and reference you have.
This video was super fun to watch! I can agree with pretty much all the negatives and positives mentioned about the armor featured in the video. A couple things, though: - Maliketh's armor really doesn't suit a person because it's literally designed a large wolf beast. The chainmail bits exist on the Tarnished's version of the armor for added protection, but Maliketh's armor has no such thing. My guess is that his joints and waist are unprotected because he needs to have as much freedom as possible to move quickly and efficiently since he does a lot of crazy acrobatic jumps and flips. Mail as underclothing may be a hinderence in such cases. -Blaidd literally has a wolf head...but the fact the Tarnished can wear it as a helmet is both impractical and rather disturbing.
Really neat to get these sort of insights, I think the editing was done pretty well too especially with the little blurbs explaining some things he would mention If you haven't, will there be a weapons video?
Man, this genre of having experts in a field look at and analyze stuff from games and movies is one of my favorites. Entertaining and super interesting!
Blaidd helmet isn't part of the set actually. Blaidd is literally a wolf-human of some sort, and this "helmet" is just an assassin that tried to mimick his head. But the name and description of the helmet make it clear it isn't part of the armor set. And Blaidd just has no helmet, has it would be hard to make one for his strange wolf shaped head
please do a part 2 to this video i loved it! i would love to see a review of some of the starting armor, like the vagabond and confessor sets. i would also love to see a review of the banished knight set, hoslows set and the kaiden set
one of the better videos of this type i haves seen, the footage made me chuckle here n there you can tell whoever they got to do it had fun also the expert had a respect for the game and didn't rip into it but rated everything on his own preference which was refreshing.
Love the vid. This needs a part 2 and/or part 3. I wanna see what Jeffrey Forgeng thinks of the other Crucible Knight armor set and it's difference from the Axe set, the Hoslow armor, the other three Knight sets, the Scale armor, and maybe even some other lighter armors in the game like the Swordsman armor.
So,we have someone knowledgeable on history,Hema,AND also the game. This basically the most optimal combination,i want the entire game scrutinized by this guy.
I don't generally like reaction videos but this one was good. Most people just react without having anything to say or even knowing anything about the topic at hand.
Love your commentary on these armours. It's balanced between pointing out the flaws in the designs, but showing that you also understand that this is fiction. In addition, you point out the smaller, historically accurate, details that the design team were able to put in. Also, you didn't verbalize your title, which was a bonus to earning my Sub from this vid.
This video was a great watch. A part two to this would be awesome as well! So many great sets to review. Raging Wolf Armor / Hoslow Armor / Royal Knight Armor / Veterans Armor / Scaled Armor

i mean, its in the name, crucible - things get melted together in there. In german they are called "Schmelztiegelritter"
this video makes me aprreciate all the armor i never wore more than i thought =)
In fairness to Radahn's helmet: the guy is enormous. The number of beings in the setting tall enough for that kind of design flaw in the helmet to even be relevant for is...tiny. There's also the fact that the horns are possibly an homage to the Fallingstar Beasts (which Radahn's gravity magic holds back from the Lands Between), showing how he has conquered them.
and no one would even be able to get his head
@@jstar3382 That's literally the first thing he says
Tiny, but not zero, at least two people beat em lol
Pretty sure he’s rating these sets by how useful they are for the tarnished specifically
Like with Maliketh’s set, the chest is a problem for a human while for Maliketh it isn’t because he’s on all fours so his chest isn’t a vulnerable spot
@@ch4rlesiv115 people are really out here just acting like scales and chainmail are made out of paper cause they watched a shadiversity video one time
Just noticed the shinguards on the Bloodhound set are turned around. It makes sense for the Bloodhound Knights because they are on all fours, so it protects the exposed calf. Obviously once you get it, keeping it backwards is kinda dumb, but that is clearly an oversight by the developers.
I have a Bloodhound Knight build and one thing that makes it look better is crouching
They’re also shaped to the back of the calf so turning them around wouldn’t really make sense either, they wouldn’t fit the shin properly
@@connorwilcox146 knee would be exposed, but they should function still. It's not like they'd be more curved or anything. It's literally a shinguard just turned 180.
A rando that got resurrected and was told to go kill some shit on a flying horse is highly unlikely to understand the implications of their armor
Its funny because on Maliketh himself that chain isn't even there, I think it was put there as a modification when it was sized down for us
@@sibren9874 yeah don't wanna show no bare stomach. Far too lewd
@@jacthing1 Well having chain mail would be better than running around with a huge hole in your chest plate lmao
@@jacthing1or ya know, they wanted to keep the look of the original armour but not make it absolutely useless by completely exposing the belly
Dont really want to dull that sense of hearing either
or malikeths armor and blood hound armor having little protection on the belly, well those fighters stand on all fours like a beast so there belly is low to the ground and very very hard to hit so why put armor their, it would be like putting plates on the bottom of your feet.
you can find a wolf helm in the game :)
Yes, a second part would be awesome
I’ll send a request to Dr. Forgeng straight away!
Banished knight set, vagabond set or even soldier sets are also really realistic too. Definitely want to see those reviewed.
and the raging wolf set please

Man, I've watched a number of these 'expert reacts' type videos in the past and I just have to say, this is up there with the greats.
The presentation, the stylized introduction to each set, and the commentary all seem focused and well put together.
Others have mentioned this already, but it is definitely true, absolutely a hidden gem of a channel and I hope the algorithm picks you up because I feel a lot of people would agree.

@@travismurtland3257 also among the few who knows what they talking about
I could be convinced to give him a 10 if you could talk me around his helmet.
I agree. This is great, really impressive.
Time has yet to dull its luster.
I always pair the crusader style helm to offset the odd knight set helmets and it pairs wonderfully especially when it comes to the Haligtree set.

I’ll make sure Dr. Forgeng sees this. Very wholesome, thank you for watching : )
Absurdly underrated channel
When i saw the views and subscribers i couldn't believe it, a really high quality video, take me a sub for sure
Just like the hound knight set, maliketh's armor is made for a mostly quadruped creature. And thus the belly is not easily hit whilst other areas are more vulnerable and thus better protected.
Yeah he mentioned that
@@waterbender6288not for Maliketh
Excellent takeaway, you’re exactly right
Ironically enough the Vagabond Knight Set is also up there; it's lighter and more open design would be nice for travelling long distances.
Really loved the video and learned a lot of things, all love and support for Jeffrey!
finally it seems the historian was actually provided a vague outline for the game’s lore, and not just hired for easy views
I love that you look at the armor from a historic and battle field perspective, but you also aknowledge that there is an artistic aspect to this
This guy was great.
Thanks iota, glad I didn't disappoint. Can't wait to make the next souls video
I'm digging these channels having experts with open minds and inquisitive attitudes giving us their insights into video game equipment and gear!
Something that unfortunately happened only recently as far too many "experts" are too close-minded to comprehend the multimedia context of a... Japanese-mafe game set in a somewhat western style fantasy world where beasts and monsters are almost more common than humanoids, which are still wonk and generally undead.
Yeah
They just forget about the themes and aesthetics is what i mean.
Glad to see that changing with the times.
The information given is obviously priceless, but I have to really commend the style and editing in the video. You usually don't get something that feels this scholarly adapted this well to the RUclips format. Feels like it's usually one or the other. Bravo.
Should have let him do the starter knight sets, like the vagabond knight sets etc. etc.
1:50 in & its one of the best elden ring videos out , awesome real world comparisons
One of the best Elden Ring videos. Period. The knowledge and perspective into The Tarnished life and experiences was the cherry on top. A wonderful video.
Wow, thank you!
I’ve always loved the Carian Knight armor but seeing it up close like that really gives you a whole new appreciation for the ornate detail
Glad to have you around Rogat : )

I love how he takes the time to appreciate the games inner beauty and detail and even rated armor based on how it befits the tarnished.
It would be really amazing watch a playthrough of the whole game with Dr. Forgeng analyzing the architecture and equipment and how they fit with the lore pointing the real history and myths inspirations
Damn i wish Elden ring had an outfit viewer mode so i can appreciate their designs even more.
Someone tell him the lore of how Radahn learned gravitational magic to be able to mount his horse when he became giant because of his blood
i think he was referring to the tarnished riding totrent with the set on
As a Massachusetts resident, I miss the old Higgins Armory museum, where all the exhibits were on display in a distinctive L-shaped room inspired by the great hall of a medieval castle, with banners and stained glass.
"I liked everything but the weird helmet" pretty succinctly describes my own thoughts on a lot of the armor in ER.
Very, very interesting video to watch. Its so cool to hear you objectively look at theses armor sets in the context of the real historical world.

This channel is one of the coolest discoveries this year! You really show how studious and deliberate FromSoft is with their armor designs. Very cool
I love Dr.Forgeng's view on the armors. Its very cool to see an approach to the armors in that the tarnished might be rich or not too.
should've done veteran's armor, did any of you guys realize in-game that the gauntlet on the right is mitted, and the left is more like a finger gauntlet? it's a very small detail, and im sure some other armors might also have this too, but thinking about it more, it's a very overlooked feature that i haven't see anyone else comment about. (and by "i haven't seen anyone else comment about" i meant i just looked at like, the first 100 replies and called it a day, hope i was right)
edit: underrated channel, like and subscription added
Very true!
Radahn Set only has sandals because Radahn doesn't have feet (just noticed it),
Maliketh's armor has weak chest protection because he walks on all fours with his chest to the ground,
Bloodhound armor has plate covering the "back" of the lower legs,
Haligtree Knight helmets are tall and narrow because the knights themselves have slightly elongated necks and arms (seems to be a common side-effect from being near the Erdtree).
Awesome video, but I’m shocked that there was no Banished Knight!
As someone that lives close to Worcester ,MA I may take a visit to this museum. I'm in RI so this is about a hour drive. Good video though I like learning the inspiration for the design choices
Radahn actually learned gravity magic so his horse would not have to bear his weight.
the horse's name is Leonard
radahn as always being a gigachad
Please make another video where you react to more armors, godrick soldier, banished knight and cleanrot set atleast👍
I'm sure someone has already pointed it out but for the Crucible Axe armor the decorative wings on the helmet and elbow protection are meant to represent the double-sided axe that the lord to which the Crucible Knights are sworn to wields
Hoping for a second video with some other armors.
Don't forget the big boy armor: The Raging Wolf Armor.
Oh my gosh! So cool to have a cool museum this close to me. Thanks for just showing me the museum!
"could be convinced to give it a ten if I can work around my issues with the helmet" - every videogame armor set ever :D
Great video, the character and cultural influences as well as the functionality were really neat to see, and I love the amount of both game footage and reference you have.
This video was super fun to watch! I can agree with pretty much all the negatives and positives mentioned about the armor featured in the video.
A couple things, though:
- Maliketh's armor really doesn't suit a person because it's literally designed a large wolf beast.
Really neat to get these sort of insights, I think the editing was done pretty well too especially with the little blurbs explaining some things he would mention
If you haven't, will there be a weapons video?
There will be a weapons video for shadow of the erdtree : )
The carrian knight armor is for spellswords. One hand is meant to be holding a staff for casting magic, and the other is meant to be carrying a sword.
How much to make this armor?
Smith: All the kings horses and all the kings men..and his women..
But the video and the analysis are great !
please do a part 2 to this video i loved it!
i would love to see a review of some of the starting armor, like the vagabond and confessor sets. i would also love to see a review of the banished knight set, hoslows set and the kaiden set
Needs a lot more views hopefully the algorithm cooperates
one of the better videos of this type i haves seen, the footage made me chuckle here n there you can tell whoever they got to do it had fun
also the expert had a respect for the game and didn't rip into it but rated everything on his own preference which was refreshing.
Its insane how many references from different fields of science, art and history the developers of Elden Ring took.
I know! That studio in on another level
I would love another video continuing the series with him! Great concept and really well executed, Dr Forgeng's descriptions are interesting
What a cool concept, letting this armor historian nerd nerd out about nerdy video game armor. I love this stuff.
This video was a great watch. A part two to this would be awesome as well!
So many great sets to review. Raging Wolf Armor / Hoslow Armor / Royal Knight Armor / Veterans Armor / Scaled Armor
