- Our favourite weapon expert, Matt Easton, of Schola Gladiatoria, is back on IGN to react to even more weapons! Matt is an all around sword, historic weapon and HEMA expert, and today he'll be taking a look at IGN's Game of the Year for 2022, Elden Ring.
From the rapier like Bloody Helice, to the absurd Axe of Godfrey and the deadly Nightrider Flail, Matt breaks down just how realistic these weapons are, how they're used and what they could be inspired by.

It helps that the axe of Godfrey originally belonged to a guy who was like 9 feet tall and ripped.
And a detail he wouldn’t notice is one of the axe heads is broken. Am slightly dissappointed the player example doesn’t use the Ash of War to turn the heavy attack into a stomp, I’m sure he would find it amusing and not sure if he would know if there is a martial art that utilizes stomps.

He respects the fantasy setting of the game so much, and honestly that made the content more enjoyable than a lot of other experts reacting to video games. My guy straight up fall in love with the Helice despite of its ridiculous design. Please do bring him back, From Software has plenty of weapons in their catalogue of games to nitpick

My favorite thing is this guy takes the world that the swords take place in seriously as a part of their story and that is really cool
right like he appreciated the moonlight greatsword despite them showing a character 2 handing it he's a fun dude

The sad thing is you can't really use any kind of AOW on flails with useful/powerful movement (sword dance, spinning slash). Why? ...

The thing about the bloody helice (corkscrew blade) is that in game it has a passive bleed effect on the weapon so it actually kind of makes sense when considering that the cyclone knife leaves a wound that is very difficult to treat.
Pretty much anything that would leave a particularly nasty open wound gets bleed. Case in point with Ghiza's Wheel and the petal whip
Fun fact: that cyclone knife is a war crime 😆. Triangle daggers are forbidden in the Geneva Convention specifically because they are difficult to treat

Halberd dual wiled is one of the best for pvp double spears is actual cheese in pvp
If I've learned anything about Elden Ring players is that they must always dual wield everything they find, no matter how silly it looks. Halberds, scythes, even pillar sized greathammers.

yeah why were they dual wielding a unique sword? they didn't show off the weapon art either. seems like a missed opportunity to get his opinion on some cool fantasy elements of the weapons

@@silverjohn6037 E = MC^2 my dude. Energy counters that. There is a reason crossbow gets heavier when you set it. The energy is converted to potential energy which contributes to the weight.
@@delphidelion a drawn crossbow doesn’t become any heavier than just the bolt and crossbow alone. Tension or impact can be expressed in force just like gravitational force, yes, but the similarities end about there
@@zeppie_ it actually might be slightly heavier because gravity does pull or rather cause space time to push on energy. hot object are slightly heavier than the same object with the same mass cold

Man I'm love the way he approaches this topic. It has always annoyed me, in these types of videos, that experts were taking those fantasy weapons at face value. This guy is appreciating the fantasy-aspect of it, commenting on the creativity of it, instead of talking it down as merely unrealistic and useless. We know it is unrealistic; it's fantasy. Thank you for seeing that.
it's hilarious to me that someone would click on videos about a real-world expert speaking on short clips from a video game and then get annoyed when they point out that something is inaccurate or unrealistic, that's literally what they're here for lmfao
@@dingdongspaghetti Well, pointing it out is one thing. Right before this he said something like "I'm not sure how on earth you would make this thing," so he _did_ point out how unrealistic it would be to see it in actual medieval combat. He just didn't spend his whole time looking at it complaining about how they could ever come up with original ideas for weapons in a fantasy game (which limits the amount you get out of the criticism as a viewer), he did his best to compare it to things he was familiar with, and guess about the most effective way to use it. Pointing it out isn't an issue, it's ruthless criticism and refusal to even consider it in any other light which is annoying, because it kind of misses the point of the video.

My favorite part is that he gives the strength benefit of a doubt, acknowledging that these characters are incredibly strong
It does help that, like in most modern fromsoft games, it is acknowledged that one can use the respective games currency to aquire quote:"Inhuman Strength".

Hoslow's Petal Whip is a sick weapon in the game lol
The indian Urumi was the basis of the flowing weapons of the Nox Dancers of Nokron and Nokstella eternal cities in Elden Ring.
there's also an actual Urumi in the game. Even called that
suggestions for the next episode:
great move set and style to analyse:
- zweihander
- uchikatana
- rivers of blood
- godskin peeler
- double scavenger sword (with parry ash of war)
- flowing curved sword
fun options:
- nox (urumi, hammer and sword)
- magma whip
- family heads
- ringed finger
- hand balista
- visage shield / one eyed shield
also, if possible, do a special episode for the ashes of war. they are the best for this type of videos because of how they modify the weapon usage. wild strikes, barbaric roar, sword dance, unsheathe, etc.

So a funny thing about the Urumi is that is actually in Elden Ring and is a whip.

the Godfrey axe is infact broken in this form, if we got in game brand new it would actually be double sided which makes it way more wild!
Iirc the phantom of Godfrey uses the Axe in its full double headed form….. we never get to use that tho
Can't get over how he mentions the modern corkscrew being meant to cause huge blood loss and not that the Bloody Helice has that exact same function remarked in its description (which even showed up on screen!)
They should have shown him Prelate’s Inferno Crozier or the giant finger. It would have been interesting to hear his thoughts on those lol

Give him some slack. It's kinda like watching a keyboard review where someone is typing on the bottom side of a comically oversized keyboard. Sure, you could talk about the switches, but honestly, _why are you typing like that?_
There isn't much to say about the sword itself, tbh. "It's... a really wide greatsword" pretty much sums it up. As a HEMA expert he's at least as interested in the technique of using the weapons as he is in their design, and "how would you effectively use this weapon" is how he approached everything in the video. For that one, it wasn't an incredibly innovative design, and they happened to show him a clip of it being dual-wielded, which is indeed practically ridiculous.
He doesn't know that the blade is made of light and it's an extremely light perfectly sharp sword. It's only possible to wield because it's so light.
Love to see Matt on this channel, great pick!
The "corkscrew" shape you mention isn't actually that hard to make, Matt - augers and twist drills are made in much the same way. The difficulty comes in sharpening the damn thing, although it isn't clear how sharp it would be.
You're right that the heat-treat would probably cause some hard-to-predict warping, though!
The thing about the flail too while spinning it, is that a fixed chain would not spin properly, it would get nudged side to side and the chains would get twisted, it would need to be altered a bit to make that motion

disclaimer: as someone who does blacksmithing you definetly can make the bloody helice by twistng cold metal, although it wouldnt be very strong or particularly useful as a sword you would definitely be able to make this sword
The fact that the Qatar and the Urumi were mentioned, appear on the game, and weren't reacted feels criminal
To make the bloody helica, you could simply forge the blade like a traditional blade to begin with and than you would heat up the the blade for the "twist" and turn it until you reached the desired twist ratio, finally you would coat the exposed core (and ONLY the core) with a type of fire clay (like the kind used for katanas) before finally heat treating the edge
im glad they got Matt. He's super knowledgeable of swords and stuff.

Episode 3: Show him the real life weapons he mentioned, that actually happen to be in the game.
A couple of these weapons are specifically Bleed weapons, which matches up with the historical and real world weapons mentioned (Cyclone, blade whip, etc)

those are dual lances, dual halberds are kinda mid if you only use the dual wielding moveset.
You should've showed him weapons wielded in 2 hands as well plus the weapon art, also there is an Urumi (Nox Flowing Sword) in the game as well, show him that!

The approval for Hoslow's Petal Whip brings me great pride, as it has been my weapon of choice.
Regarding the Bloody Helice: What if the "Corkscrew" were a sort of sheath, with a locking mechanism in the handle? Inside the corkscrew would be an estoc!

Dark Moon Greatsword is, without an Abso-fraking-lute doubt, one of my Most Absolute favorite Greatswords in Elden Ring!!!!!
That corkscrew sword looks like a down sized core drill you'd use to go ice fishing and drill a hole in the ice! :)

Take into consoderation that the guy using the whip can lifte 15 inch thick 10 by 30 feet solid steel doors.
So the power behind his whip swings and swings in general are nutso.
Take into consideration that a real life grizzly bear. One of the worlds most dangerous creatures. Is legitimately one of the absolute weakest things in the game can be killed with a few dagger swings.

They really thought duping, powerstancing and avoid using the Weapon Art of the Dark Moon GS was a great idea to showcase the most iconic weapon of the entire franchise to the weapon expert.
