  • Jonny and Richard wonder about a forgotten and very noisy part of the Mod scooter scene. Also in this episode, the cars of A Touch of Frost, annoyingly needless idling, a BMW problem that only affects police cars, meeting someone from The Bill, seeing a Toyota Blade and wondering if Gordon Murray is getting taller. Plus, Agnetha from ABBA running a Volvo parts warehouse, the weird noises made by Teslas, the price of second hand Alfa Giulias, the meaning of Cat S, the agony of slow overtaking, the joy of an old Tatra and the absence of young Bernards. Oh, and also some stuff about goats.

    If they knew the Toyota Blade has a top spec model called the 'Master G' we probably would have had a 20mins of how 'Blade Master G' sounds more like a rap name, which would turn into which other car names would also make a good rap name.

      Master G is actually the name of a rapper from The Sugarhill Gang. But it's spelled 'Master Gee'.

      Uh Master Gee, my mellow?

    Cheers chaps, fab as ever. Jonny reminded me why I studied German over Latin, a weekend at Hadrians Wall with the rather dry Latin teach, or a weekend in Germany with the very lovely lady German instructor, which also included the bonus of buying beer underage and meeting a gaggle of Irish girls at the hotel. Nichts ist unmöglich.

    When my E90 320d turbo went the garage told it because I wasn't letting the engine warm up before hitting the work commute and was told to let it idle for a while before driving off. Same when switching it off, let it idle but for a shorter time just so the oil is not cut off whilst the turbo is still spinning.

    It's the N57 lump used in the Police Beemers. Egr coolers overheat and the cars catch on fire, crank main bearings barely last 100k and the timing chains on them are weak and are prone to snapping at anything above 80k - and in BMW's infinite wisdom the chain is at the rear of the engine and it's a gearbox out job to swap it with the engine in situ.. They're great to drive but quality wise they are a total no no - a motoring equivalent of cheaply veneered teeth.

    • @1984ed101
      @1984ed101 2 года назад

      N57 was phased out and replaced by the B57 between 2015 and 2018. G2X and G3X 3'd and 5'd use the B57 (now B57Tu). F1X and F3X used the N57. N57Tu to be precise. So this is only for older police cars now anyway.

    A few weeks ago I was driving behind an NYPD police car with all the bells and whistles (not making a sound or lights on) in Dinas Powys of all places. Reminds me there is also a house I know of that has 3 Polish fire engines. I keep wondering whether to drop a note in asking them to contact TLBS.

    As I'm sure Mr. Porter will confirm, there is an art to matching a car to a TV character and I think that a used ho-hum mid-range Sierra or Mondeo was pretty much the sort of motor DI Jack Frost would've had. What else would Regan and Carter have been in other than a Granada? Or Morse and an old Mk2 Jag?

    Re: BMW model codes, they started assigning blocks of numbers to one model line (each number getting different body styles) starting with the E90, which was actually the E90 (sedan) 91 (wagon) 92 (coupe) and 93 (convertible). So where they used to use one "E" number for all the body styles and types of a model for an entire car model lineup, now they seem to use an entire block of 10 for one model and use individual numbers for body styles. Something like that. That's why they churned through the F codes so fast.

    Humourless German here:
    Whether you're allowed to wash your car in front of your house depends on the city you are living in. In most places however it is banned for pollution reasons. This is also why there is a huge array of pay-by-coin jetwash places around. UK detailing videos of people degreasing their engine on their drive would give many people a heart attack over here.

    So obviously I wander off to find youtube videos of Tatras as you do. Strangely I find a 1962 12 minute promotional film featuring three lunatics hooning around Czechoslovakia in a 603. Strangely because you couldn't actually buy them you had to have one assigned but it was a very good film anyway. To prove that syncronicity is a thing I go to check (see what I did there?) what else the Czech youtuber had posted and discovered along with many films of Tatras and Skodas a film featuring a bronze Grandad coupe. Funny old world isn't it?

      I reckon I drove one of the first 530d when I got it from Hertz rentals in Paris. Driving was brutal, it was all on or all off. I had it for 1 day, and took it back in the morning to Hertz with the window smashed and the bonnet missing. The police said that this was a thing in Paris at the time, where somebody with a damaged BMW would pay a couple of goons to score components from cars in hotel car parks.

    In all of the British police shows I have seen (with actual police driving, not actors) they tend to use ALL of the engines rpm band even if they are just driving around, going 500-1000rpm from the redline before shifting. Maybe that's what's causing the BMW issue and a carry over from most of their police cars being/used to be small underpowered engines and that's just how you make them accelerate at a decent pace.

    Jonny, the old Diesel had to keep running because they didn't had any glowplugs and, if they cooled down, it would be a pain to get them started again. Before glowplugs, the diesel engines had a diesel burner on the intake manifold that would literally set manifold conduits on fire to warm up the air until it was warm enough to the engine be able to start. There are storiees of truck in Russian winter needing to setup a fire underneath the engine to warm up the whole thing to be able to start... 😅 see this: ruclips.net/video/NeDvCVS38hk/видео.html
