  • On paper, the Alfa Romeo 4C is probably one of the best performance cars for the money. I finally get to take it out for a spin, so let's see if it lives up to the hype. On this episode, I drive the 4C, track it and find out how this affordable exotic car stacks up in our acceleration test.
    Track Day TV is a channel dedicated to performance cars and building an extensive database of their acceleration times. At the same time, I strive to deliver content in a cinematic and visually pleasing style with honest opinions from a guy who just wants to drive cars fast.

    When I was looking at this car it took me a while to get past "I can buy faster cars for less money." That is absolutely true. But as you said, it feels faster than it is, and I pass 3-4 Porsche's a day on my way to work. In addition, in my opinion it looks much better than anything in its range. Agree, this car is raw as hell. It is not for the timid, but it is definitely for me.

    Think when people complain about the quality of the interior they are forgetting how expensive that carbon tub is. Try buy any part in carbon it's extremely expensive. They are trying to justify a 70k pound Renault Megane because it has carbon "parts" on it. The whole chassis on the 4c is made of it.

    The Alfa Romeo 4c is the best car I've ever driven! You're right. It's so raw! You also forgo to mention that it doesn't have power brakes. You're right about the steering. After test-driving the Alfa Romeo 4c, I didn't even want to go back o power steering.

    Last week I went to the “coveted” C8 viewing. I spent the previous 2 months “building” and “configuring” and re-re-configuring the 2020 C8. I had paid $1000 to have an early ordering slot. Then I actually saw it in person. I then asked for my money back and drove straight to the Porsche dealer to cleanse my soul. Your assessment of the C8’s weight is right on, and it is this experience that had me end up here. I had no idea the 4C existed, or that it was a mid-engine car. Now it is in first place above (slightly) the Cayman.

    Last year, I had the pleasure of working as a sales person for Alfa Romeo and Abarth. Driving the Australian spec 4c, is definitely surreal. I haven't driven any car like it, it's very raw and very drivers focused. This car is a true weekend car, as you said the interior is basic and trying to park this thing is terrible. But when your on the track or on a windy road, you can't compete.

      @@bigcity2085 I have a 2015 4C Launch Edition bought new. No issues at all and with better tires the car is very quick. on track Plenty of mods available also to take to the next level. I am a Super Moderator on the ALFA 4C Forum with over 6000 owners of 4Cs world wide. The car proven to be pretty much bullet proof. Yeah the car is impractical for anything other than to put a hell of a smile on your face. That being said I know several people who use them as daily drivers albeit limited storage space requires some good packing. Prior to this car I had a 1970 ALFA Duetto that I also bought new and kept for over 40 years while many other cars came and went. Hated to sell that old car but garage space is limited.

      Plenty of videos on RUclips about that. The latest Exige V6 give it a run for the money but those are not available in the US and are selling aout twice what a 4C costs. The original 4 cylinder Exige with super charger even modded is slower....older tech is the reason. My neighbor has both a 4C fully modded and previously had the 4 Cylinder US version that was also fully modded. He said the 4C is faster by a good amount and a LOT more comfortable and getting in and out on both is a bit of an skill but the Exige was far worse. That is OK though as that was a decade older design. Would love to try one of the latest Exige Sport Cup cars but sadly....not available here in the US as I mentioned. Too bad that there aren't a couple of more cars like the 4C here....the new Renault might be a fun car too....but not sold here either ;-(

    @DrPyro2k 4 года назад +7

    Very well done, and I think you nailed it right on the head! The 4C is a perfectly flawed sports car, but dang does it look good and make you smile (on the right pavement). The short gears really make it a blast to smash the throttle and keep it civil on public roads. So did you actually buy it? If you did and speaking from experience, don't waste your $ to try and make it date/wife friendly. On track it is a tad of a handful till the front geometry gets addressed, rear bushings replaced, and seats/harness that support you. Once done, it is way to fun to thrash around!!!

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! Nope I didn't buy it. The guy who lent it to me for the video had just bought it. It had 22K miles on the odometer at the time and I have a feeling that the geometry was done. The red one that I drove at the track felt different than the grey one despite both being 2016 model years. The car has a lot of potential, I'd curious about their reliability in the long run and their ability to take abuse. I want to revisit the idea of purchasing one, but only after I drive an Exige and Ariel Atom (which is my dream track car).

    • @DrPyro2k
      @DrPyro2k 4 года назад +3

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy Reliability is much better than many assume for an Alfa, given how bad they were when they left the US market. I would argue it is actually more reliable than the bad press the Gulia got from some reviewers due to the lack of many electronics. This is THE most common question I get at the track. I have had very few issues with my car, and i make the comparison when VW took over Lamborghini. Lamborghini quality increased significantly due to it. I had a failed rear strut about a year into ownership (leaky), and a failed throttle position sensor (that ended my track weekend early). Everything has been taken car of under warranty, but parts (and labor) will be EXPENSIVE outside of warranty. The advantage of the 4C on track is that it weighs as much as a Miata but with an extra 100 hp. Consumables are expensive, but you don't blow them quickly (Rotors/pads last a long time). The real disadvantage of the 4C is that if you screw up and go off track and damage a body panel it is VERY VERY expensive to repair/replace. I have full track insurance, so I will keep thrashing the car on the track because it is so fun and a challenge to drive. On my local track , I can stay up with most of the significantly higher HP cars as the track is fairly balanced between tight twisty and straights (and mine isn't tuned).

    Advise, you had a passenger on the track? As an owner, having a passanger will bog down the engine on curve exists. You need to drive the car alone. Remember in EU the 4c is only 2k pounds. Already considerably heavier in the usa by about 400, then ading an extra adult will hinder response from an already small 1.75 liter engine. A tune can help a bit on deficit of the extra weight of the us spec 4c

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  4 года назад +1

      Yup, I am aware of the effects of a passenger on the track. I also track a Abarth 124 which is designed to benefit from it's weight advantage. The owner of that 4C insisted to tag along so I didn't really have a choice.

    Although I traded it in on my NSX I loved my 4C. I got almost 14k off of the sticker, it was a good buy as a 6th car. We only went for drives in the 4C and my wife didn't hate it but she didn't look forward to going places in it. She kind of liked the sound and the looks and all of the attention it garnered. It has many quirks but WITH a tune this car would be a great fun car. Makes me want to buy another. I never had a problem with my 4C but it did develop a loud buzz noise in the engine area that leveled out but never went away. When I hammered it I couldn't hear it so I hammered it every chance.... It is no fun to drive when it isn't being hammered imo.

    Another good option to test is Challenger or Charge widebodies for future

      Definitely want to try the WB Hellcat. The narrow body was fun, but having more traction in that car would have made it even better.

    I'm not normally that big a fan of European cars. German cars usually bore the crap out of me. But his car is a work of art. Best looking new car on the planet.

    Raw? I had a 1974 GTV, 1971 GTV, 1974 Spider, 1979 Alfetta, & a 1989 Milano Verde, everyone of those vehicles felt raw, cardboard like seats, leaky head gaskets, required change of camber arms, so many little things that will break. They sounded good especially with a Anza exhaust system. They drove lively, kind of cool looking. I sold them all awhile back. Do I miss it? No. Why? No cup holders

    This car could be so
    Epic if they made a track version with wider hips , wider tires , front splitter , side skirts , rear diffuser, wing and a bump in power 450-500 hp. At its low weight that’s all the power it would need.

    Not sure you have the race exhaust? two concentric rings.
    edit, it does sound like the race though

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  4 года назад +1

      I don't believe it was the race exhaust. It didn't have the concentric rings on the exhaust tips.

    You think it’s fast stock, try Eurocompulsion’s Phase 3! They have a custom made intercooler and an intake system! Also you can get paddle shifter extensions they make a big difference in the feel.

      In the video, the 300WHP I refer to is the EC Phase 2. But yes, I think the P3 would be an absolute monster. I did the extensions on a few of my cars and I agree, it's an easy way to fix shitty factory paddles.

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy You gonna get a 4C?

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately probably not. Great car but I feel like an Exige or Ariel Atom may fit my needs more. I'm in the market for something extremely track focused for next season.

    Future classic. My 4c has a bespoke ecu, full titanium exhaust and twin scroll turbo, in addition to a weight loss program to the tune of 200 lbs. It keeps up with my c7 z06 but is way more fun to drive and is probably a better track car. 0-100 mph in 8 seconds flat too. I will never sell this car. Destined to be a collector car one day...

    there's no need to have giant paddles, if the paddles are fixed on the steering wheel, like they should be.

    Way way too much emphasis is placed on going from 0 to 60 or 0 to 100, or having 10 million horsepower. None of these things actually necessarily improve the Driving Experience. For proof of that, drive and early Miata. 116 horsepower and as much fun as you can have behind the wheel. The old saying is it's much more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow.
