Because Bluetooth has massive latency for audio in the region of 100-300ms. And the standard Bluetooth audio profile does not support microphone, so you can't have high quality audio and microphone working at the same time. It needs to use the headset profile, which significantly reduces audio quality. These are limitations of the Bluetooth standard and there isn't much Sony can do about it.

After trying about 7 different mics $30-100 I settled on the Fifine AM8 microphone and it sounds pretty good my party chat agrees. Volume level is just about perfect you can adjust the gain and fine time mic level on the PS5. Only problem is you will have to buy a USB 3.1 or better cable to get it to work as the cable that comes with it won't.

Didn't think of the battery drain on the controller though hopefully it's not too bad. Sound level is fine I have to lower it on the ps5 when I'm plugged in. I read the soundstage is smaller than PULSE but I find it works fine and I can hear where noises are in relation to me in 3d
Cooler Master MH751 and MH752 are the best headsets to use on PS5 (and PS4) I have found through numerious testing. Just be sure to update the firmware on the MH752 for it to work properly on the PS consoles.
I’ve got the A40’s TR with the Astro HDMI adapter and that’s capping me at 60HZ by using it, what headset doesn’t cap me as I want good audio I can customise without giving up the original 120HZ
Not mentioned here is the fact that the PS5, regardless of whether you plug into the controller or a compatible USB DAC, has reduced audio quality (like a compressed mp3) with all wired headsets. I don't know how wireless headsets fare, but I imagine they aren't any better. The controller's headphone amp is also a little noisy if you're using IEMs or something similar. The only way I've found around this is to get audio from the HDMI out instead, which is incredibly irritating. Glad you pointed out the audio latency with non-PCM formats, though, that has annoyed me for years (it's the same on Xbox).
So by using a dac to improve the quality of the headset you're using, you need to have a desk setup so that the PS5 can be close to you because the dac's wires are too short to be able to be used in a living room setup, correct?
The DAC chip inside the dualsense controller is Realtek ALC655 which outputs 50mW/20ohm. And with most headphones being around that many ohms, give or take, 50mW is plenty for those. However, when it comes to something like the Sennheiser HD600 (which are 300ohm) you need a little bit more juice.
I use an external DAC and AMP through usb which works great on my HIFI 4xx headphones. I also use a blue yeti snowball mic which has been perfectly compatible with Playstation and has a good amount of sensitivity adjustment on the playstation side.
This is very useful. I think people should be quicker to hold Sony accountable here. Would have loved if you’d included the JBL Quantum 100/P and 910/P. With their signature sound would be interested to see how their PlayStation variants compare to the multi platform versions.
Here’s something to add to the limit in sound when using a usb dac on the ps5. I did this and found the sound too low, so I bought an amplifier, this introduced electrical noise. I don’t know if that’s part of the reason for sound limits but it makes sense.
Great video. No lie with so many issues, i kinda got lost on what is best to use. I use cheap RIG 500 Pro headset words into the controller and I'm constantly being told they can't make out what I'm saying. Been looking for a better audio solution that won't break the bank
Brother, DACs do not increase volume. Why are you putting them in and expecting the audio to suddenly be louder. If your issue is audio strengh then use an AMP not a DAC.
Hi, a bit unrelated but should i go for a phantom spirit 120se or a frost spirit 140 v3 (same price) ? Thank you ! (i watched your tests but i still don't know)
Sennheiser Game One work really well on ps5, mic is clear, sound is good and volume goes to a decent level. If you can get a pair (cos they discontinued now) i would highly recommend them
Question: how do you use an DAC in a wireless headset like the stealth 700 gen 2 max for ps5. I like the sound and overall feel but the volume is way too low.
Any recommendations for a PS5 headset? Will not use it for anything besides PS5 gaming and price is not an issue, just want the best one available. Most of my use is with friends in party chat playing shooters/GTA/sports games. Would love to have the game/chat mixer right on the headset itself but not a dealbreaker. Coming from the Pulse 3D and really loved having every button I need right on the headset and those were a perfect fit for me. Any recommendations would be amazing, thanks!
The 7p is louder than the Blackshark V2 Pro. It has a volume limiter on by default that you must turn off in the GG software. Once that's turned off the headset is extremely loud. I keep making mine at 70% volume as anything more just hurts my ears after awhile. The others I can keep at 90% without an issue
@@clawson32104 I've just bought the nova 7p but they suck!!! The volume is too low and once I close the volume it gives white noise inside my ear, I tried tuning and stuff but it doesn't work. Do you have any reccomendations?
This is a great video - I wish I saw this before I ordered my A50X Lightspeed. Super expensive for it to be put in "audio jail" - i wonder if there are software options to get out of this
I have a legit concern. Not entirely sure if it was fully addressed here. I have a brand new wireless headset thst uses a USB-A dongle and I plug it into the front of my PS5. It seems that the wireless signal from the headset to the dongle is interfering with the Bluetooth from the controller to the console. It's not constantly but every few minutes the information sent from my controller will be delayed so much its like I'm holding a button or mashing buttons almost like my character is moving on their own. I never had this issue until I started using the headset.
The overheating on the back of the console was a SERIOUS problem during Evo last year. People had an expensive dongle they had to buy for their controllers because Sony made everyone play on Ps5, and their dongles were getting melted. They want everyone to just use a proprietary ps5 controller, and FGC players don’t tend to have those.
@hardwarecanucks what are your midrange recommendations for universal use between PS5, PC, Xbox (in this priority order)? For regular gaming use and game recording as well. I use EVGA capture card to record PS5 on PC, I get audio on PC in this scenario (am I doing it right to get quality audio). And I like to hook up my consoles to TV and play there as well. Thanks in advance.
I hope you can help me. I have to headsets, Elite and Maxwell. For now i don t have my ps5 no more so i need to ask you, can i leave 2 usb dongles in Ps5? I don t want to listen to both headsphone at the same time, i just want to use them separatly. But i will have my ps5 in a cabinet and i don t want to swap usb all the time.
Other problem, when connecting a headset with a usb dongle, all other sound cut off, so you cannot use a buttkicker with an headset at the same time when racing
Is it possible to use the Elgato Wave: 3 as the microphone while also using the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless in wireless mode, i.e. not plugged into 3.5mm jack? So Elgato for mic and nova for wireless audio?
I wonder if having a small audio jack to bluetooth adapter on the controller would reduce the sound latency. I have an usb->bluetooth adapter that works fine with the ps5 but I don't think I've seen an audio jack->bluetooth adapter (maybe it's a lack of power issue).
Great video! Can I ask, do the Arctis Nova pro have any lag issues when connected via Bluetooth though? And if so, is it better to connect them via the controller?
I moved to pc then "no time for gaming at all", but i used to be a hardcore ps4 gamer. I used a usb headset that worked fine, and eventually moved to a USB mic (no issues) and a wired headset into the controller, and that was a perfect setup even in competitive settings. I just kept the controller connected 24/7 so battery was irrelevant
I'm looking for a headset with a good noise isolation and after testing many models like the maxwell, a50x, pulse elite, and others but they didn't conviced me so I'm betwen the stealth pro or the nova pro wireless wich one is a better options?
I prefer the Sony Inzone line. Not as good of sound as the maxwells but lighter and more comfortable. They can also use Sony's chat mix natively on the headset just like the pulse. They are superior in comfort and sound to all of the pulse line. Add some Yaxi SDPad2 earpads for supreme all day comfort.
I love the arctis nova pro wireless but i get most time a significant input delay on controller in cod warzone when the base station is plugged in through usb. If i disconnect usb and connect the headset itself over 3.5mm jack into the controller the delay disappears. I will try the pulse elite and arctis 7p+ but i read the pulse elite get weird disconnects.
awesome video; crazy that anything console or windows based can't figure out bluetooth audio. Took the Switch 5+ years to do it, and its a fvckin' mobile device!
Loving the Sony Pulse for gaming. For my PC I used the Beyerdynamic DT 770Pro. To solve the lacking of power from any motherboard I’ve ever used, I rely on the Creative G6 Dac. Problem solved. Tried to use the G6 + DT 770 on the PS5, works, but the Pulse is more practical and good enough.
so to understand this right, it would be completely okay to use my headphones with an audio jack and plug it into the controller, right? are the original Sony headphones so much better than this solution with the controller?
Depends on the headset. The controller has a dac/amp in it, but it's not very powerful. If you have a power-hungry pair of headphones, the controller won't be powerful enough to drive them or get them loud enough.
The lack of optical audio is a huge bummer too, the day I got it I had to set up a totally different audio setup for it. Also for dacs I've used the fiio Olympus 2 and the epos gsx 300 and both work on ps5. Using dt990 250ohm on the gsx and sennheiser hd599 on the fiio
What a great video! I’m currently running the shure mv7 via usb and the beyerdynamic tygr 300 on my ps5 all works fine, but I can confirm sound is not that loud. Maybe due to having an open back headphone…
Over the years, the only bugs I've run into with the PlayStations and wireless Cloud headsets involve the Cloud Alpha actually. At launch there was a bug with the noise gate, which was resolved by a firmware update pushed out by HyperX. Since then it has now moved into randomly having three times the gain it should have on kind of a coin flip. Putting the console to rest mode and bringing it back out of it may snap it out of it. I've had cloud flights and Cloud 2 wirelesses for years, neither had any issues at all on PS4 or 5. Just the alphas for some reason really hate this thing.
I've been using a pair of Razer Barracuda X with my PS5 for over a year and a half. They have their own volume knob and I have to keep it near the low end because they get EXTREMELY loud. Each charge lasts 39 to 40 hours consistently. The only problem I have ever had is maybe 3 times out of the 100 + times that I have used them, there was a crackling sound when they paired to the console. Easily fixed by removing the USB C dongle and plugging it back in.
I wonder how different imaging is for gaming headsets as opposed to regular stereo headphones. Since, I don't own a gaming headset, I plug my B&W P9 in the dual sense controller and the sound is great but I wonder if I would get a wider soundstage from a much cheaper pair of gaming gear.
If you want imaging and soundstage, gaming headsets are the last thing you want. Astros, Steelseries, and the like are abysmal. Get a good pair of headphones and the Soundblaster of your choice (I like the G6 and GC7) and you'll have a substantially better sounding setup.
A friend of mine was desperate for a headset to tie him over till he get's his own, I've had this very old Goji bluetooth headphones, connects via bluetooth without any warnings or issues.
Kinda old but you need to go into Synapse on the PC and activate sidetone. I did that and it saved to the headset and carried over to the PS5 which is my primary usage.
Sony limiting headsets is disgusting! Should be illegal! Theyre doing that as well as getting rid of optical port to force people to use theirs! Ps Portal doesnt even have Bluetooth so u have to use their headset. They're getting insanely greedy
Audio was quite soft with my Cooler Master MH670's via the dongle. Nice and loud via the 3.5mm in the controller. Upgraded to EPOS H3Pro Hybrid and it is plenty loud with the USB dongle.
I use a pair of Apple AirPod Pro’s 2 with an Antank Instant B35 USB Bluetooth adaptor, works fine. I use the mic built into the controller for chatting to people as Sony doesn’t allow the mic functionality built into AirPods for some reason. I find traditional over the head headsets with ear cups uncomfortable as they make my ears hot and sweaty. Using the Airpods stop all of that, it’s a game changer for me when I want to play Apex for a good few hours.
So, one question. Does anyone recommend buying and pairing the corsair virtuoso pro + sound blaster X on PS5? I'm looking for a great openback for the PS5...
I have the black shark v2 pro 2020 and they’re terribly quiet. Volume turned all the way up on the headset and in the PS5’s UI sounds like half volume on any other headset. The annoying thing is that they weren’t like this when I first got them. Happened after an update or something
Really good comparison to Halo Benny! Definitely hit the nail on the head with misunderstanding the culture around a character. Id argue the same situation around Luke Skywalker. When it cimes to the Suicide Squad game, i would have had Bruce work more like Amanda Waller without the cape and cowl. Workong more like he did in Batman Beyond serving as intel and support. Maybe supplying tech and upgrades. As things escalate he would make the decision to suit up again and either die a hero or serve as continued support in the field over the course of the game.
Does using headset compatible with ps5 such as Arctis 7P will get better audio quality when running with usb dongle (proprietary lossless audio encoder) vs 3.5mm. I suppose sound get compressed when send to the controller wirelessly ?
It's sent over Bluetooth it's probably why it's shit, Bluetooth over audio is horrible. I use my corsair virtuoso dongle and it works fine, sounds amazing.
Audio quality with wireless headsets has come a long way. It wasn’t even a question about the audio quality between wireless and wired. Wired is still king with audio quality, but the difference now is minimal
@@bluej511 Bluetooth yes it’s horrible, but some of actual wireless dongles now have extremely low latency, almost none. My daily headset is the SteelSeries Nova 7 Wireless and that has extremely low latency that it’s almost non existent and great audio and imaging for a gaming headset
About the Astro A50X headset. They extract the audio signal from HDMI via the basestation. The Ps5 shouldn't even know that it's playing audio through a headset. Why is the audio capped/quieter? I don't get it.
I had the 2020 version and worked fine on ps5. I changed to the 2024 ps5 edition and they are capped 😮 The only diference between them its the dongle… 2024 version is usbc I think its that
Ok… so great video 👍. I have PS5 mic issues with the (not the Pro) Nova 7P wireless picking up every noise (like my shallow breathing), and especially in PS5 party chat mode. I think the bleed through on standard ear cups is the main problem and wondering if upgrade Wicked Cushions would be worth it? I will try to drop my mic volume both on PS5 and bring it down in the GG app from 100% to %25. Would this act as a type of noise gate or suppressor for the mic? Does anyone have any suggestions for the Nova 7P as far as sound Amp/DAC or should I just get new headphones? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m thinking of getting an external usb mic because I’m also a musician to and bought MacBook Air M2 to start recording our band. Wondering if I could kill two birds with one stone with a new gaming/studio headphones… Audio Technica has the studio monitor ATH-50X headphones that has a gaming variant with an amazing mic…

There are amp/dacs, probably misspoke .
Have you done the Sony pulse elite yet?
Hi, a bit unrelated but should i go for a phantom spirit 120se or a frost spirit 140 v3 (same price) ?
Thank you !
(i watched your tests but i still don't know)
your cpu? use case?
@@vladsta3833I plan on upgrading to the 5800x3d but I will keep if I go with whatever am5 cpu in the future. Main use case is gaming at 1080p
Hi I'm looking for the best headset for the ps5 what fo you recommend
Sennheiser Game One work really well on ps5, mic is clear, sound is good and volume goes to a decent level. If you can get a pair (cos they discontinued now) i would highly recommend them
Or pc38x
Any update on ps5 wireless headsets? Maxwell is nice but so heavy
So sounds like the Blackshark and Nova 7P are the way to go for a PS5 headset that is under $200
The 7p is louder than the Blackshark V2 Pro.
Lol I thought I was the only one with the low wireless headset volume issue. 😅
What monitor is he using
i still cant even get bluetooth headsets to behave in windows 10….
Any recomandations for wireless headphones im a PC gamer and (i mainly use Logitech products).
You are the best. Thank u for testing.
Most Bluetooth have latemcy, so depends on the transmitter
Hello what game is this at 3:28
Returnal it’s on pc and ps5
Do you have to have the elgto wave 3 and a Pc to work on PlayStation 5? because I’m only a console player
The biggest issue is plugging a headset or earbuds into the 3.5mm aux port into dualsense causes huge delay..
awesome video; crazy that anything console or windows based can't figure out bluetooth audio.
Do my pc38x could do fine on PS5 ? I thought the controller 3,5mm was really bad
How about connecting Corsair HS80 USB, is it compatible?
Seeing you're a fan of DT 700 Pro X, maybe also test their wireless MMX 200 headset too.
I am thinking about getting the blackshark v2 x for my ps5 but it says it is not compatible for ps5. Is that true even if I plug into the controller?
so to understand this right, it would be completely okay to use my headphones with an audio jack and plug it into the controller, right? are the original Sony headphones so much better than this solution with the controller?
They are much louder than when I plug a pair of Sennheiser HD 202 headphones into the controller.
Thanks for the reply and info. I'll look into this!@@WeAreN1nja
I test pulse 3d in wired mode volume 100% normal but in wireless vol sound like 50%. That dongle issue ???
You find the problem? I have a same problem…..
How the Audeze compared to PULSE ELITE wireless headsets.
A friend of mine was desperate for a headset to tie him over till he get's his own, I've had this very old Goji bluetooth headphones, connects via bluetooth without any warnings or issues.
for the nova7´s, do you know if its only good on the P version or is it them same on the X version too?
Same
What is up with the crackling from the Modmic? How is that acceptable for anyone?
I feel this video was made for me personally I’ve been looking at these for weeks lol
I have the G6, does chatmix work? I’m connecting my H6Pro.
Did you guys manage to get the sidetone working on the raser blackshark v2 pro 2023 on ps5? If so, how did you do it ?
What watch is that?
I use a pair of Apple AirPod Pro’s 2 with an Antank Instant B35 USB Bluetooth adaptor, works fine.
I use the mic built into the controller for chatting to people as Sony doesn’t allow the mic functionality built into AirPods for some reason.
I find traditional over the head headsets with ear cups uncomfortable as they make my ears hot and sweaty. Using the Airpods stop all of that, it’s a game changer for me when I want to play Apex for a good few hours.
How’s the mic quality though? Do you have to speak really loud just for your friends to hear you?
AMAZING VIDEO...THANK U
So, one question. Does anyone recommend buying and pairing the corsair virtuoso pro + sound blaster X on PS5? I'm looking for a great openback for the PS5...
i found discount in nova 7 its gonna work well for my ps5? or should i take nova 7p
They will work but you need to turn the volume limiter off in the GG software. It's on by default and cripples the max volume of the headset
Have you reviewed the playstation headets
I remember they mentioned before the lunch of ps5 that it will have a dedicated hardware for sound powerful as ps4 cpu so maybe that the reason
I have the black shark v2 pro 2020 and they’re terribly quiet. Volume turned all the way up on the headset and in the PS5’s UI sounds like half volume on any other headset. The annoying thing is that they weren’t like this when I first got them. Happened after an update or something
I have the inverse.
My 2020 version worked well, and Now the 2024 ps5 edition are capped 😮😮😮
@@famezy9103 correct, if using a dongle, Bluetooth is still shit in terms of reliability.
@@famezy9103 yes but if it has a dongle it's not a Bluetooth dongle, most of the time it's proprietary or 2.4ghz :)
About the Astro A50X headset. They extract the audio signal from HDMI via the basestation. The Ps5 shouldn't even know that it's playing audio through a headset. Why is the audio capped/quieter? I don't get it.
Nice test.
i just have a extention usb cable on the back for my headset dongle and have it routed on a high and not obvius spot even better than on front
hello what about razer blackshark v2 pro ? is loud as v2 pro 2023?
I had the 2020 version and worked fine on ps5.
I changed to the 2024 ps5 edition and they are capped 😮
The only diference between them its the dongle… 2024 version is usbc
I think its that
Ok… so great video 👍.
