- The goal of this video isn't to provide in-depth coverage on any specific product, nor is it a ploy to get you to buy new stuff! I wanted this to be a basic guide for each product type and price range based on gear I myself have personally used and enjoyed. If I can suggest these to friends and family, I can suggest them to you! I broke it down by chapter for IEMs, Gaming Headsets, Headphones, and more to help save you time. Hopefully this gets you in the right direction if you've been on the fence for a while and weren't sure where to start!

Ultimate guide indeed! 👏 This is hands down the best audio gear roundup I’ve come across…period. Thank you for not only touching on the best options for gaming, but also pointing out iems and headphones that work well for music too. Immensely helpful for those of us who want a solid all-rounder choice. This guide really helps to filter out all the “noise” on the inter-webs, helping to make my decision much simpler and more straightforward. I gotta say, your channel is my absolute favorite for all things gaming and audio. I can always rely on a non-biased opinion here which is refreshing to say the least. You put a lot of work and passion into your content and it shows. Cheers!
Keeping it concise and drops a 43 minutes video haha. Love to see it! Thanks for the video!😁
lol. I love telling my wife I’m making a 20 min vid and she knows that means an hour of filming
As the best friend of Joey since we were 6 years old, I can confirm this WAS concise... LMAO!
Great video Joey! Always with the best information!
Scott Herman on this video is so random but I love it lol
We grew up together haha. We’ve been friends since 5 years old and he’s STILL my best friend hahaha
@@GadgetryTech I was the brawn, Joey was the brains. We make the best team!😁
Knocked it out of the park as usual Joe! Thanks for all of your awesome videos and hard work!
This has to be one of the best audio gear suggestion video
Covers everything from bottom to top
Really appreciate your efforts
Thanks!
this man has every head phone or head set in the game salute'''''''
hands down my favorite headphone channel. thank you for all that you do
Thanks so much!
Wonderful, and very comprehensive review, with great advice to help with audio choices for all environments. Thank you for your time and efforts and for compiling and sharing this for us all. Very appreciated. Take care and all the very best, Sir.
Really great video, congratulations!
One question, what do you think about the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x?
Great work man. Thank you!
STILL BRO you STILL blow me away with how good your reviews are. Id love to work with OR game with you one day. 🔥
Amazing video, this was truly epic. I can't pick up a lot of the headsets in my country via Amazon although I added a lot to my wishlist! I'll do further reviewing to see what suits my preference but this video helped a LOT.
Great Video Joe Love your channel
love these kind of overall videos
Great video and very timely. Thank you.
Very impressive collection ang great advices and reviews
Got the Nova 7 base on your review. Happy to see it on top of mid level list! Thanks for the great reviews.
Thanks for the video, Joe; very informative and insightful.
Just curious - what headset do you use most often for gaming, and why? And for music listening, same questions.
And which headset or iem is optimal for both gaming and music listening?
Enjoyed the whole video bro. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
That B roll was just mint. The spining headphones. So great.
Went with a VZR Model one based off a previous review you did, it’s amazing. Paired it with a Schiit Stack and wow. Just wow. I hear everything.
Top video for gaming audio! Thank you.
fast and precise THANKS! :D
Thank you for the very informative video, I'm looking to replace my skull candy crusher. This has truly helped me narrow down my choices.
I just purchased the Pulse Elite headset, thank you for such a informative review.
Awesome video love the content! Purchased the VZR Model Ones after watching one of your earlier review videos and it’s by far my favorite gaming headset. Just need the Schiit Hel to come back into stock lol
Awesome!! Glad to hear it haha. Its so damn comfy too
Joe what’s your most used favorite headphones? Thanks for all the hard work. You have the best channel for gaming audio.
I have been researching gaming headsets vs headphones trying to search for something that I liked as much as the original HyperX Cloud IIs (before they got bought out and changed them). This video has been the single most helpful resource I have found. Thank you for the DD and effort.
Appreciate the honorable mentions 🙂
Thanks for making this extensive guide! I've been intrigued by the VZR Model One since learning they exist literally last week, I also discovered another headphone with a very unique presentation called the Crosszone CZ-10. I'd love for you or anyone else to compare these two for gaming! There doesn't seem to be anyone on the planet that owns both of these headphones.
Great video!! Thank you for sharing
This is an amazing video with plenty of great recommendations. I've never seen those wireless headphones with swappable battery. If they include an analogue out as well then it's genius, as they won't be useless after a couple of years of battery degredation unlike most wireless stuff
Really comprehensive video. Thanks a lot for including pretty highend gear as well. Too often I find these lists of gaming headphones or earphones and they will stop at at $400 USD when I currently use the Sennheiser IE600 IEM's and considering buying the Westone Audio - Mach 70 Universal IEM which cost $2,200 AUD because I love highend audio but also enjoy gaming with my friends. Other reviewers should always bare in mind that there are always going to be gamers who are happy and able to spend a lot of money buying relatively premium gaming and audio gear such as I'm about to order the ROG OLED that was recently released and use quality microphones such as my RODE NT Mini I think it is and want to power my audio with quality amplification. Thanks for also including the amplifiers to drive the headphones of choice in your video though I do wish you included some higher-end options suitable for IEM and USB C mic input. I'm not sure I've seen such a comprehensive video on gaming audio prior to this.
Thanks so much for all your helpful videos. Now that you've reviewed the atlas air, where do you think it would slot in?
Thx for video!
Bro, I ordered myself a schiit magni unity for my vzr model one. I don't need a microphone. What do you think about this device, it's better than hel2 in sound?
Really great video! There's lots of other good stuff out there, but it's impossible to list them all, and you did a nice job of narrowing it down. I think the only other thing I'd have like to seen in the mid level wired is the DT770 Pro (since its a good closed back option).
Thanks for including the DACs! If you plan on listening to music or having a little overhead for a harder to drive headphone, I'd recommend a Fiio K7 and an extension cable for your mic if gaming on PC. Lots of power and a balanced output. Probably would work on PS5 also (I know the Zen DAC V2 does). For me it was night and day for the H6Pro closed back with a good amp. I don't like using it on PS5 through the controller because the bass just takes over.
So much detail 👌🏼
Great review as always! I was surprised not to see the DT 770 on there since it is so recommended online for closed back gaming. I ordered DT 770 Pro X LE and will use them primarily for gaming and RUclips/Streaming on PC only. I have analysis paralysis on amp/dac and wonder if there really is such a big difference in being able to monitor your voice by plugging both into the one amp/dac or just the headphone into the amp/dac with separate usb mic? I have been considering smsl c200 or the topping dx3+ and also the Zen Air stack but feeling like it might be overkill but as a woman I am drawn to shiny things and like the probably unnecessary display. LOL
Thank you, great video!
Thanks for the video!
is it still worth picking up the Audio-Technica ATH-G1WL or should i just grab one of the other high end wireless options?
Just got my Arctis 7 Nova's today, super happy with them along with your settings! They changed the EQ in Sonar for the mic (no longer sliders) so now it includes bandwidth. Any chance you could advise or do an update to include bandwidth for each of the bands?
Thanks for the updated audio guide. I recently purchased the Arctis Nova 7x based on your previous video recommendation and prior to this video being posted. I’m glad I did because I got them for about $125 after taxes. Now they’re back up to almost $180. Hopefully I don’t get a lemon. 🤙🏽
High end headphones and headsets are like supercars. There are nuance differences, but they're all fast. The nova 7x is like a Honda Accord. It's got plenty to speed to get you to the grocery store and do it comfortably at a much cheaper price. Ultimately, what else do you need?
This was awesome.
So if I had to pick out new headphones currently using the Audeze Mobius that has fallen apart are we saying Audeze Maxwell is the best pick right now?
DT 900 Pro X vs Maxwell we still going Maxwell?
Just recently discovered you. I don't know how the yt algo did not find you sooner. Great stuff and exactly what I'm looking for when it comes audio. Thank you for being real.
I have a question not sure if you answered it. I use the open back 900 pro x by beyr for music/guitar DAWs and it's been my game driver. I'm considering the maxwell but can you tell me which wired headset would you say compares to the maxwell if you want to stay wired. And by compare I mean by sound quality. The 900 pro x have been impressing me in bf2042.
Great video! What are your thoughts about the GSX 1000 and the Mix Amp Pro in 2024?
Joe you're the guy on YT for reviewing headphones. Hands down 🙏 Quick question if I may (or to anyone else)
After watching your review recently on Stealth Pros I took the plunge and love the sound but having issues with the boom mic. Sounding distant, tinny and never had the echo problem as much before. Some are suggesting the internal mics are better. Is this true? Was wondering if mines was faulty in some way. Its barely useable coming from what I'm used to with the mid tier TB 700 Gen2s.
Mamy thanks
Thanks for the info. You mentioned most of the headsets talking about listening to music as well as gaming... I'm looking for a headset in the $250 range for gaming (footsteps) ONLY, I don't listen to music at my PC... What do you recommend for footsteps in that range? Thank you.
Hello, I love your vid! I have a question about IEMs - how their sound imaging compare to headphones/headsets ? Take EM6L/Dusk for example, to which headset you could compare them looking at just FPS gaming performance? Are they better than Maxwells in this regard?
Thanks!
Become a pro gamer with crappy $50 headset then buy a $500 headset, got it
Great video! A ton of information
Hi man, great content! I have a question, how do you connect your IEM to the FiiO DAC, some of them have 3.5mm jack and the DAC have 4.4mm and 6.4mm ports
WOOOW SUPER GUDE!!! Thanks
Hi man, I’ve watched your turtle beach recon 500 in the past. Do you recommend them still today, or the steelseries arctis nova 1? I’d use them with PS5 through the controller. My doubt is purely on sound quality and if the mic on the Recon is adjustable and not too long. Thank you if you’ll answer :)
As always Joe, thanks so much for the inclusion of our Kimura! If anyone has any questions about the Kimura or other Antlion Audio products (ModMic etc) just reply here and I'll get back to ya!
Hell yeah! I have many Antlion products in my studio and use them all the time! My beyerdynamic TYGR 300R has the ModMic mount on it :)
Still rocking the KSC75s on PS5 their definitely great for competive gaming been using them on Warzone, Rebirth Ranked play and MW3 Ranked play really good and affordable recommended! Thanks for mentioning them Tech you the man!
Nice! Sometimes I just use the KSC75 when I want my ears to breath
I got the Maxwell for sound quality primarily, and so far it has been great for different games, Like: FFVII Rebirth (FF has amazing music and performance from the actors), Dragons Dogma 2, Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade.
looking into getting one IEM for mixed use
Great video!
I have the Cloud 3 Wireless and the Maxwells (bought both on day 1). My maxwells have started to fall apart and the strap is coming off, and I also find them a little too fatiguing for all day use. The Cloud 3's are nice, but HyperX broke EQ completely with a firmware update (has not been working for weeks now) and I haven't been able to enjoy the stock sound. I just went ahead and purchased the MG20's since Amazon Canada had them on sale for the equivalent of $250 USD. If I care about sound quality, premium feel and comfort more than anything and don't require any other features, do you think they're the best in class?
A neat trick with the G6: Want to give any of your closed back wired headphones or IEMs transparency mode? Get a nice inexpensive 3.5mm camera mic, like the ones BOYA makes, and turn on monitoring in your recording settings and adjust the level. I basically need transparency in my environment, so this has been an amazing feature for me.
Any link for cables with a Mic that one can use for headphones like the Sundara or edition XS?
Also Joe, you made a video about a Lav mic recently, I think it was worth mentioning here that they’re great to pair with headphones without a mic
Glad to see the GC7 get a shoutout. I don’t see a lot about it, even since the price dropped (it was like 180 when I bought it).
The sound quality is solid, the controls as you mentioned are second to none without breaking a switchboard and Bluetooth/app controls make it amazing for use on Linux where native software can be limited.
Hey! Thank you for this great video! I might be new to the channel, but why Logitechs don't seem to be mentioned in those price ranges? I find them better than Blacksharks at least.
Joey What headset do you recommend I want to use in xbox series x, ps5 and switch. I have in mind buy the turtle beach stealth pro or the astro a50x. What do you think is better option?
Hello sir. Love your content! I bought the simgot iems, I used to play with Sony pulse and with simgot the sound it's more clear but I can't understand where the steps are coming from they are a bit confusing. I also use your sonar settings for mw3. Am I doing something wrong?
I am currently using the united audio volt 1 audio interface with sure sm7b microphone. I mainly play first person shooters and mmo/rpg’s you think I need a separate dac/amp for the tygr 300r’s for gaming use
I'm very interested in the Antlion Kimura duo because of the sound profile for gaming, specifically Escape from Tarkov, and the included mic. What I want to know is if I will get a better experience if I paired the Kimura mic alone along with another IEM. What would you recommend?
I placed an order for thee Audeze Maxwell in mid-April for their May batch. I can't wait. I bought the Mobius when it was on Indiegogo for funding. My first unit broke, and so did my second one. I still use the second one. It's all off balanced, but it gets the job done. It will be nice to compare the two and see how far Audeze has come with their gaming headphones.
new pads coming for the VZR huh? interesting. I planned on getting the VZR HEL+ combo because of your review. once things are back in stock
Hey Joe, will you review the Turtle Beach 600-500 gen 3 that are on pre-order?
Hi, currently the Pulse Elite and the Simgot EM6L are the same price in my region, what would be the best choice overall, for both PS5 and PC gaming (single player and multiplayer) as well as listening to music every now and then.
Which DAC would you use with IEMs? I'm very interested in the Antlion Kimura Duo. Searching your channel if you did a review.
I was leaning towards Focal Clears - Thoughts?
Just want to say a huge thank you for all the reviews, great information and ive actually bought the SteelSeries Nova 7X based on your reviews.
I'm a huge FPS gamer and I needed something to replace my ageing SFXI Gamers, my only issue is I wear hearing aids... the SXFI are great for them as the cups are big and comfortable. Stupidly I took the advice of fellow gamer and bought the Logitech G PRO X but the interfierance was horific. I let you know how i get on with the X7... cheers
Joe, can you share your EQ for general use for the VZR? I'm hesitant to auto EQ it to the harmon curve because I'm wary of distortion.
Good stuff man
Joe, how do I EQ the VZR-One? I notice you said you EQ yours, however, I’m unsure what you use to do so. I own the Schitt Hel+ which I’d use to power the VZR Ones. Should I buy an EQ to go along with the Hel+? I’m just trying to figure out how to EQ, not only the VZR One, but any analog/wired headphones I own, as well….there are a few pairs of headphones you said you like, but you had to EQ them. So what is it that you use to do that? Thanks!!
Great video! I'd also love to seem one along the same lines for speakers. It a part of gaming audio that is often ignored.
Thanks! Keep your eyes on the channel! I have something fun planned soon that involves speakers and gaming!
@@GadgetryTech I look forward to it!
Great video, glad you like the DT 1990s (except for the peak).
I personally am not too bothered about the peak but after comparing EQ vs no EQ I get what bothers people.
For me I perceive the glare mostly in the case when a lot of cymbals are hit in a row in a song, the 8khz peak makes all the after effects of the hits overlap and creates a sort of a shrill/sharp sound that I fortunately perceive as more of a background thing (slightly annoying but tolerable). It also colors the vocals a bit but I don’t find it annoying.
Also about the longevity of the DT 1990 - the only weak point are those plastic sliders, mine cracked for no reason, without even dropping the headphones once. Also the Analytical pads (which I prefer and use several hours a day) seem to degrade unevenly and in about a year you might want to replace them. There is also a side effect of their degradation that it softens 8kHz a bit, but it makes them sound less clear.
Great video as always! Is there any way to get parametric eq for your warzone tune and a physical button or dial for game/chat mix on PS5 other than the Astro’s?
Thanks so much! Join the Discord for that discussion, as it will be easier to help there. The short answer is yes, but you'll need to use a wired audio option.
joe u have to try the hd800s with the astro mix amp put it on stereo mode and put the pre set on the last one going down try it they sound great with the mix amp i don't no why but they just do and the lcd gx also ''' i have the mix amp connected with optical cable to the back of the tv and the usb in the front to the mix amp try playing call of duty like that and watch a movie with that same set up tell me what u think''' i dont like the hd800s with the hel 2 by the way''' i use the gx with the hel 2+
@GadetryTech - Where can we find the Audeze Maxwell as you have them in the video? Everything I find online is only in black. Love the colors. Thanks in advance.
I’m surprised the Xtrify made your list, I had wondered if it was any good. Joe you said it’s as if they took the Hyperx clouds and made them better in practically every way, that sounds amazing
this guy is the audio king
Love these round ups! PC38X has come back around for me after we had a falling out for a few years lol.
I'd say it's like the Toyota Corolla of headsets, but that would undersell how well it performs. PC38X is still one of the goats for sure
Hey Joe, I currently have the steel series arctis 7p. The nova pro is on sale for 280, is it worth the upgrade?
As far as sound quality and detail for footstep locations, would you, @GadgetryTech, choose the S12 Pros or the Playstation Pulse Elites?
Not in the market for a headset but looking forward to your review on the new TB Atlas Air when they come out. Presuming you'll be covering them?
100%
This really helped me narrow my choices. I am surprised the Logitech G Pro X 2 headset didn’t make the cut. Any particular reason why they were not in the lineup?
PC gamer. Been thinking of switching to IEMs, but I don't really understand if i need a dac. I would be plugging into the back of my og blue yeti mic.
Otherwise for over ear headphones i LIKE wireless, open back (currently using astro a50 gen 3)
Gaming performance is my main concern and I'm more than happy to spend a lot of money for the best performance.
How much worse is wireless vs wired? How would you compare IEMs vs traditional headphones/headset? Any suggestions on picks perfect for me?
Have you got the chance to try moon drop kato for gaming? I love mine so much and wonder what u think about them. Music sounds so good to
Have you ever tested the Antlion Audio Kimura Duo for gaming and what do you think about it compared to what you have for gaming?
Great video thank you. I just use a logitech pro x wireless headset and am looking to upgrade. The maxwell is so tempting.
@GadgetryTech I feel like the Astro a40 Tr pro's with mix amp are still very much viable with some EQ adjustments too. Plus I love having the game/chat mix dial right there at my finger tips.
His advice is spot-on, although my experience with the HD560s and TYGR 300 is slightly different. But that is really due to personal preference. The reason I use the HD560s now as my main is because the tips of my ears touch the inside cover of the driver of my TYGR 300 (I would say I have about average ears, whatever that may mean :0). He actually mentions this in his 'Wicked Cushion Freeze Pads for Beyerdynamic' review. And with the WC Freeze that (almost) sovles it, check his other video on this.
Yes, the HD560s clamp more, but they definitely loosen over time.
I’ve gotta get some of those watch cases, my iem collection is turning into a tower of cases on my nightstand lol.
Can you talk about the MMX300 Beyerdynamics ? Thx for the video
what do you think about Airpods max for gaming? im into apple ecosystem and that will fit very well in my setup. thx in advance
I noticed the new Astro a30 wasn't included but you seemed pretty stoked on it when reviewed. its going for 169$ right now, is it a worth option compared to the PlayStation and steel series mid range?
Great video. I have the pulse wireless headset for my ps5. Are the iem that much better for COD? I’ve never used them. How do you mute the mic if you use the antlion to eat Doritos? Lol
When do you think the Maxwell video will be up and what is it is it just ear pads and eq I just got the wicked cushion freeze pad I still can’t believe how good the Maxwell is I’m revisiting old games just to experience the audio I get goosebumps playing games lol and for £320 it’s a bargain
