Samson is a company. Samson makes microphones. This one is the Q9X. Samson wants it to compete with the Shure MV7 and SM7B. Samson should update their website.

Honestly I think it's because you live with your voice every day so you got preferences of what you want to sound but the majority of people like a more full voice and sometimes a cleaner mic doesn't give that effect but one tuned with more low end or with a darker sound is more pleasing to the ear probably also why alot of people like the sm7b because it's a dark microphone

I preferred the mv7 and liked the Qx9 the least it wasn't clear to me. The other four sounded similar. So i'm with you. I liked the mv7 the best (the last one) it was more clear to me and didn't get harsh, and had a nice clear yet mellow sound. I have no skin in the game just my opinion.

I actually found the sound of the Q9X quite pleasant on your voice! In these recordings, it had solid isolation. Everything else sounded like you were in an untreated room with lots of bright reverberation (which is true).
I think the RE20 is the best _overall_ sound. Good isolation, not harsh, warm without being muddy.
The SM57 is a surprisingly bright dynamic, bordering on harsh. Its extension into the low-end is what “saves” it for vocal application. It also has decent isolation.
The SM7B is not my favorite on _your_ voice, but I think it sounds fine! Classic Shure “compressed midrange” tone.
The Q9X actually performed quite well here. Compared to the other 4 microphones, it offers a different sound. Good isolation and very warm in tone, though bordering on muddy.
And the MV7 is a smidge too thin on this recording. Especially right after the Q9X, it has a noticeable cut in the low frequencies that is reminiscent of an “old radio filter.”
Your technical complaints of the Q9X are very valid. However, I disagree with your opinion on its overall sound. I actually preferred the mid-boost off, it sounded congested and nasally when you turned it on (not a lot, but on a recording I would EQ it back down). I found the Q9X quite pleasant in this particular demonstration. It was *far* “warmer” than the other mics and had the best isolation against the bright reverberations in the room. The last thing I want from a “broadcast” style microphone is harsh top-end; nothing is more fatiguing after 30+ minutes of spoken word content than an overly bright microphone.

Got myself a Q9U last year and it’s really not bad aside from the egregious lack of shock absorption. I did get it from Amazon uk though where it was around half the price of an MV7 and around the same price as a Wave or a Yeti so it was definitely worth it at that price point. I do hope to upgrade soon though but they annoyingly don’t have a frequency response graph anywhere I can use as a reference and they just gave me the silent treatment when I asked for one. Did they ever send you one for this review?

Hi, awesome video! I’d really appreciate if you could help me settle a gear dilemma! I’m a r&b & rap artist with a voice in the mid to high range and I’ve been rocking with an AKG C214 for a couple years now. I love it’s clarity and open quality, however my only complaint is sibilant sensitivity and sometimes an overly harsh high end, which makes high volume vocals a challenge. I want to add another mic to my studio, and logically considered getting something with the opposite qualities of the c214 so I have more variety of vocal to choose from - SM7B. Warm, dark, smooth, great tolerance for volume and great noise rejection. Do you have any better direction to steer me in? I was also eyeing some of the warm audio tube mics, the wa47jr, the at4040, etc.

I agree with others that it sounded the best with your voice and it would probably suit mine voice too. I chose it in the blind test.
Also I actually enjoy how it looks, I like that they're mixing two classic looks. If sound really gets worse, a pop filter might be used.
I actually enjoy that you speak about the companies more broadly, talking about their website, image and ideas. We already know we have this obsession with a very niche thing that doesn't even requires that attention from buyers, often even if they're professionals (singers, VO artists). So why not go full crazy and discuss everything? Especially when you already have a few observations. And I agree Samson does require to change something. Their, I think, most popular mic looks very unimpressively in this day and age. This mic looks good (to me), on the other hand, but the things you outline might be improved. And the photos too, of course. By the way, Shure has some very good photos on their website but even they can improve. It's hard for me to understand why they can't pay more attention to this. So many people start their careers online and they look for things that look nice and presented nicely.
Hopefully, I will have the chance of winning this time. Cause life's been hard and I'd use it for VO work. If I will be able to deal with the noise, of course. Right now I'm working with 30+ years old Shure SM57 clone and have to deal with a lot of noise too. But I do need the mid range cause my voice can appear nasally (when I sing I even sound a bit like John Lennon in the higher range).
P.S. Also I'm amazed that Sm7b does sound so much worse for you. It's amazing how much it matters to find your mic. If I had only to imagine I'd say it's your mic

I actually liked the Q9x best in the blind test. I feel like it's going all out for a bass / proximity sound which will appeal to users whose priority is not clarity. Kind of like a cheap 50mm f1.8 lens is an easy way to get blurry backgrounds in photos for a bit of razzle dazzle without actually achieving critical focus. If you're just posting your images to Facebook and not pixel peeping it feels great but someone with a trained eye (or in this case critical ear) will spot the flaws.

The Mv7 sounds really bad on your voice, the Q9x is okay and 1-3 sounded the best

Funny, but the Samson sounded best to my ears (and headphones) on your voice. The MV7 was really a pain to listen to.

Cool video, not great microphone. Don't want to turn this into a anti-Samson screed lol, but I think when you say they have to make a better design, I think that might be underestimating the scope of their problems. So many of these older brands now only exist as a name. If I had to guess, I don't think Samson makes a single item, it's all a branding exercise now imo. They just put a brand on whatever they spec out from a supplier in Shenzhen.
Taking a quick look on gmaps, it seems they moved from their old HQ you showed in the badly photoshop photo a few years ago and is now in a strip mall type thing next to an local insurance agent. The employee reviews on Indeed are sort of amusing too. This is already too long for a YT comment, but a video on the microphone/pro audio manufacturing industry might be neat content. Keep making awesome videos!
