This is surely an experiment; Hyundai as well as other car brands are closely watching the market's response. If enough customers bite, you can be sure that more cars will get the IMT. VW popularized dual-clutch ATs in India, Maruti did the same with AMTs and now, its Hyundai’s turn with the IMT. Really a nice and an informative video ! Should have tested the iMT variant without Hill Assist feature on a very steep slope like exit of a basement because I believe in that condition the car will start rolling backwards.
My friend has installed this system in his car almost 4 years before. He says the feel isn’t great as proper manual so he switches it to manual with clutch while his dad prefers without clutch as his dad have met with an accident and their leg doesn’t function normally. But as far as I remember it costed him close to 1 lakh and this imt costs 15-25k so fair amount for people who will commute daily in city
Beautifully explained bringing in the questions from the audience and covering every part of the users' concerns that may arise. Kudos to Autocar India and a special thumbs up for Gavin D'Souza for executing it so well! If there is anyone who can beat Maruti, it is none other than the Korean siblings! Gosh. Literally a manual without the clutch but with all the ease and assistance of an automatic. Watching Gavin present is like therapy. There's no cringey faults, mistakes, glitches, or stutters. He's just like the imt.
When checking hyundai in 2020 they all types of automatic gear box , IMT and MT .except eon , santro all models gets 3 engines options . Hyundai giving everything for india 😘 love it .
most people prefer an automatic transmission not because they cannot shift gears but their left leg starts to ache even after an hour of bumper to bumper traffic. And hyundai has addressed this beautifully!! They attacked this main concern. The manual lovers do not like giving away all the control like in an automatic transmission, the automatic lovers can still give their left legs some rest. And the budget conscious can benefit the best of both worlds without breaking the bank over a manual car. All in all, An AUTOMOTIVE MASTERSTROKE!
very good questions and replies.. i have two questions .. 1) how does this compare with market leader (so far) Brezza ? 2) very reason we want automatic is because we want to free our one leg and hand and drive comfortably.. with iMT does it help, because still i have to use one hand and keep shifting.. 3rd question - iMT is costlier than MT and AT ?
this type of transmission system is always i wanted... it's for my kind of ppl who wants to change gears but doesn't at all like to use the clutch for gear transmission!!! good review though
I-mt is just like Paddle shifters on Automatic gearbox is directed to ecu for smooth gearshifts to function . 2 Intelligent gearshifters with different mechanisms inside only difference is that newer box is fitted with ECU controlled Actuator for clutch depress and press actions for relief of engaging clutch in MT box. Great video. I think this is the future of manual transmissions if they will survive at all. I would definitely buy a car with this kind of transmission if they would sale it here in the US.
Imt would be a big issue while driving in traffic coz in manual u can slip the clutch in 2nd gear and control the speed but in imt u don't have that option.. Seems to be a bit confusing..anyday driving manual is best as u have complete control over the car
Gavin Bhai Thank you for this video as this video being the only guild/help for IMT right now on internet. still a question with non top variants with no hill assist and IMT. no idea what ll happen and ll it be deal breaker if we consider this transmission. Your response ll be much appreciated
iMT!!! Years ago had a Hero Honda Street. It came with the iMT gearbox and rotary sequential gears. I would go so far as to say that driving such a vehicle will take a little time getting used to. Acc pedal lift off is usually done in harmony with clutch pedal depression in a normal manual and you don't really lift off the acc pedal in an auto box during gear changes. So it will be a sort of a funny feeling. Having said that, I think where it will really be appreciated is in bumper to bumper traffic and crawling speeds.
No physical clutch means no stress of getting the clutch plates changed, post wear and tear, like in traditional manual cars? Simply putting, does it have a clutch plate and will it be required to replace the same post wear and tear?
For India this will be a huge success. Especially in metro cities where roads & traffic conditions are worst and we Indians are always looking for good fuel efficient vehicles.
Absolutely Brilliant🔥 Smooth, Reliable, Affordable And Extremely Easy To Use👌 Hyundai Should Immediately Bring This iMT System In More Affordable SANTRO, NIOS & AURA👍
This is also called as dual clutch transmission. There is no clutch padel yet there are 2 sets of clutches in the car. One is for odd gears and 2nd for even gears. When you operate odd no of gear the other clutch already engaged and when you shift the next gear (even) the gear is immediately engaged. It is one of the fastest transmission and this technology has come from the race tracks.
Innovative and a smarter move by Hyundai ,one can experience both manual and automatic in one transmission 👍🏻 it helps to ease hipertraffic gives retirement to the left leg 😎
Nice review. However, Hyundai could have offered this IMT in Venue 1.2 NA petrol engine (to play the middle ground) instead of 1.0L turbo which already comes with fully manual (to please the driving enthusiasts) & fully automatic (to cater to elite sophisticated guys) options. Hi Gavin, Will the sudden change of gears in iMT from 5th to 3rd (downshifts) or 3rd to 5th(upshifts) will cause more wear and tear of the turbo engine?

Those like me who want to keep the manual gear shift feel but without the weirdness of a paddle shift (which seldom is useful in city) it will be old school nostalgia. But when on the highway say a return journey when family is all asleep and just waiting to hit the sack this imt can be sort of invoke an "arre yaar" moment here and there. The best is when say on an amt they can give this a flip switch to activate full auto by leaving the knob say into a 7th gear slot it does everything for you but when you want the nostalgia move it down instead of + and - I think it will be amazing.
Two important technical questions.. What happens when the clutch sensor fails ? Chances we may get struck on the road..another question when the car battery is down we push the car and immediately during the motion shift to 2nd gear to start the engine manually during an emergency..this is possible with the manual clutch..for IMT think this is not possible since the sensor is run on battery and when the battery is down sensors will become inactive..

IMT comparison with automatic depends on what kind of automatic transmission is it being compared with.
1. IMT vs AMT
AMT tends to be jerky in shifts. The only con of AMT in terms of smoothness of the ride.
This can be taken care of by IMT and give almost similar relief from clutch presses in traffic.
2. IMT vs DCT
Well, DCT will provide smooth ride as well as complete experience of automatic.
Factor to look for will be cost effectiveness.
After having used AMT as well as DCT cars my verdict would be as follows
1. IMT for people who want to take charge of transmission without worrying about the clutch engagement.
Obviously won't get true control as the complete manual version as mentioned in video in various senarios.
AMT - better avoided if you can go for IMT
DCT - true automatic experience but at a premium.
And ya, do not forget that a user can get better mileage from IMT as compared to AMT and DCT depending upon individual driving habits
