In 2001 Stuart Langelaan a.k.a. Lange teamed up with Skye, for the beautiful "Drifting Away". A great vocal trance classic, which made it to the #9 position of the UK Chart! In this week's vlog you will see my interview with Lange, with the story behind "Drifting Away". He tells more about how the track was made, why he never met (!!!) singer Skye (so far!), you will hear more about the story of Britney Spears who announced "Drifting Away" in the Top Of The Pops-show, he tells what his own favorite production is and more!
Also make sure to check out my other interview with Stuart, in which we discuss the Lange and The Morrighan classic "Follow Me" from the year 2000;

What is your favorite version of “Drifting Away”?
Original Mix
Besides Original I would go for Beam vs. Cyrus remix. This guys always did amazing job with sound design & mixing
original :)
Original radio edit
Original mix yeah..that was a master piece 🤩👍
I have a feeling you could make an hour documentary about Lange. He's done so many classic tracks, remixes and projects. Total legend.
Michael Oglesby Haha yeah you are right! In the previous interview we also talk about the amount of productions and remixes he did back then, so many!!
And I'd watch it if it was a 10-hour feature! :)
And he's of of the most decent, witty, and kind people you could ever know. Absolute class act talent.
Fuck yes! Lange special would be amazing! Great idea
Wow, thanks a lot to lange, he made magic trance tunes back in the day, and “drifting away” was the true definition of how trance should sound like, beautiful!
Drifting away is one of my favorite classics. When I knew trance back in 2002 it was one of the best releases from that year, great bassline, emotional vocals and euphoric leads. So, easily I turned into a Lange fan. Great video, Twan.
Thanks so much! Loved doing the 2 interviews with him!
This hit so hard when it was released. 23 years ago is frightening though.
Time flies right? haha!
Wow can’t believe he’s never played the original version which to me is the best version. The lyrics and melody of the song go so well together. I tended to not play much vocal trance but this one was one of the exceptions!
Such a great track right??
One of my all time favourite tracks.
'Drifting Away' was one of the best vocal trance songs of that decade.
Thank you again for another great interview!
The Sunset version is so amazing. Not a month goes by without listening to it at least once.
The remix of Fiji, and "let it all out" are my faves. Really cool to see this
I remember dancing to Drifting Away on one of the DDR games back in the day (DDRMAX2 I believe, and was one of the best tracks in the game). Lange's remixes of the Lost Witness tracks (Red Sun Rising and Happiness Happening) were probably the first I've heard from him, and I loved the LNG Inter City track he did too which was quite addicting.
The Lange Remix of Red Sun Rising is one of my all-time favorite tracks of any genres. Hear it while in the right frame of mind (if you know what I mean) 😅 and your mind will get blown every time. I miss DDR BTW. Fun times.
Well, 20 years old now you said! 👏 💎 Novadays I like mostly tunes from that era. And every day discovering more....addict for old music, yes.
far more Lange remixes than the main ones that get aired, try for example "Rhythm of Life - You Put Me In Heaven With Your Touch (Lange Remix)", "Elles de Graaf Empyreal Sun "From Dark To Light" (Lange Remix )", Z2 I Want You (Lange Remix), "Lange & Cate Kanell - Fireflies" to get blown away again. All on my trance playlist if interested
I like this man so much. Interesting story behind Drifting Away ❤
Glad you enjoyed the interview!
His other trance song called "I Believe" is one of my all time favourites. (the "Lange mix" version)
Another great track of Lange indeed!
imo his best track. i love the tandu remix the most
When the base is an Epic Masterpiece, all the remixes about this never can t be a fail . Lange IS and Will a Big Legend, all his whole career is awesome
Love this track so much ! Lange is such a friendly guy and so talented.
He is!!
My favorite version is also the hiver and hammer remix. Love most of their stuff from back in the days.
6:00 Oh I love that answer! :)
Haha clever huh?
muzikxpress lol yes
I discovered Lange with his remix of Reason for Ian Van Dahl. I was blown away at the time as I was just discovering Trance sounds 😍 That remains my favourite work from Lange, right before Drifting away.
He did so many amazing remixes, crazy!
Reason is one of my guilty pleasures by him, wouldn't give the original version any time of day.
I discovered that track very late when in the UK as I dont think it was ever aired in France. AMAZING piece! Love the stage performances too, even if I just learned here that she was just a model...
I never knew either hehe
one of my all time favorite songs in one of my childhood favorite DanceDanceRevolution videogames "DanceDanceRevolution: DDRMAX2" on PS2 it's how i 1st got to know of tha song but very interesting interview
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the interview with Lange!
@@muzikxpress ya welcome! i've even done a gameplay of it on my channel even though i had a tuff time on Expert difficulty, i still had a great time especially if it's one of my absolute favs in tha DanceDanceRevolution videogame series and btw, tha game used tha original version
What a nice guy. Thanks for the interview!
Great interview
🙏🏻
Awesome interview. Very cool to hear from someone who is pretty much one of the godfathers of UK trance. One thing I'd want to know is what Stuart thought of this song being featured in DDRMAX 2 for the PS2. He must have been stoked.
Recently started to listen and like the mentioned track, very cool to see the interview, thank you!
These interviews are great mate! Only discovered your channel last week via Trance Classics. My two new favourite RUclips channels. Keep up the good work ❤
Thanks so much Mark!!
Oh yes, i remember this sweet breakbeat remix of Symmetry C we all loved at this time and until today. Mirage of Hope Remix also very nice. SPX - straight to the point remix very nice! it´s always the baseline that makes it special. Also very interesting "Another you another me" with Gareth Emery. OK enough references now :P
the energy of this track has not been beaten yet. This track was truly one of its kind. In the top 10 Trance tunes of alltimes, this track should be in. Thank you Twan for putting this content online! Dankjewel !
This guy is a legend, so many great tracks, so many memories. Thanks buddy! :D
Woah...lange sir again🤩👍😄🙌was hoping to see another interview...thank u Muzikxpress for making it and thanks Lange sir for your precious time🤩👍😄🙌🙌🙌🙌awesome legendary interview 😄👍
Great interview...thanks for posting it! Always interesting to hear the background to how great tracks come about. I never knew that the vocalist on TOTP and in the video wasn't actually Skye (Katie Marne)!!!
Another great interview, Love everything Lange does!!
Thanks a lot Mark!!
Very very great interview! Thank you very much for your work Twan, much appreciated!
Thank you very much Artem!!
Nice interview. Thx
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this one, short but sweet and some great facts I wouldn't have known of otherwise. Amazing how young he looks on top of the pops knowing that even years before that he produced his mix of Fiji to name just one! Thanks Stuart for this interview and Twan!
Thank you so much! And yeah, Top Of The Pops, almost 20 years ago now :D
Amazing insight with every episode, very grateful for these 😊
MKN Thank you so much!!
man.. i love that iconic lange metallic gurgling baseline
Born in Shrewsbury my home town
he seems like an enjoyable person to talk to, love this! i would’ve assumed Skye was the one in the original music videos, i learn something new every video. thank you Twan 👍🏽🔝
Thank you! And I was super surprised too about that story regarding Skye haha! I don't think many people were expecting this hehe
awesome interview Twan, thanks mate, and thanks for asking my question about Britney Spears introducing him on TOTP :D must've been so surreal for him! :D
Haha you are welcome Simon! There's only a very short / tiny video from that on RUclips, I couldn't find the full introduction, so it wasn't something I could use for the vlog, but I could ask him about it for sure hehe
Love this!
Thank you Mike!!!
A fantastic interview, Twan. Great work. Good to know the details and tidbits about this tune. I can't believe Lange has not met Skye. I know that's not uncommon but given how big the tune was, I thought they would have. Lange has made phenomenal choons. I would love to see him return to form.
Thanks a lot Hersh! And yeah, that Skye story also surprised me haha
love you lange
Didn’t even know about that version of the track, it’s pretty good.
Well done for this interview. Really interesting to hear the background. His music has meant alot to me over the years. Thankfully he seems like a really genuine dude too also!!
Cheeky question about how he made the bassline. Haha like hes gonna give that one way lol 😃
Thank you Rob! Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, Stuart is a great guy, super down to earth! More interviews to come soon btw 😉
Twan, thanks for asking that question ive always wanted to hear - what does he think of his older 99 productions and that sound. Lange is a strange one,i absolutely loved that '99/early 2000's era he had - he was one of the best Trance producers back then we a great style - but for me,he hasnt made anything notable since the mid 2000's and seems to have just faded into obscurity, which is a real shame. That older sound he had still sounds fresh and crisp today - i wish he continued with it.
His LNG tracks were very good but I can't think of any producer of trance that still makes the same sound that they might have done 20 years ago, then again I really don't bother trying to keep up with new releases as the internet has saturated the market and today's overly-compressed sound literally is cancer to my ears. It astounds me when producers make updated versions of their old tracks to sit alongside more current tracks in a DJ mix, the older tracks had dynamics and sound a lot better to me anyway, don't know about others. That's not necessarily true of Ferry who of course did Anahera (very well imo) which was what I think a remake of The Sonnet by System F but still you cannot replicate the overall sound from those days as many things have changed. On a positive note I do still like Sean Tyas's older trance sound and his newer Psy-trance tracks.
I find it more satisfying going through older music of which there is a ton of that I have missed or that have heard a few times and forgotten about. Also I'm getting back into vinyl which is a whole thing in itself.
@@low3freq Ferry has with the new Gouryellas..and theyve been very successful aswell.
@@low3freq also Steve just made new Hydra tracks in the same style as 2003's Affinity.
Cheers man, hope you enjoyed it!!
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!!!! 😍
I am under effect of this track quite some time. Playing again and again. Intro is also a great one. Listening every time. Playing each one of them but I especially like Sunset Mix. Thank you. 🇹🇷
It is beautiful isn't it? BTW good timing, today it is the birthday of Lange ;-)
A very small present then, happy birthday Lange :)
"Dear wife. I sold the house and donated the money to Twan so he can produce more content like this. -Sincerely, soon to be your ex-husband"
Åsmund Høin Schei haha! Trying to raise money as we speak for a Frankfurt trip in 2020 to interview a bunch of legends, so any help is very much welcome! Thank you!
@@muzikxpress awsome!!!
Very interesting!
Thank you!
Wow ❤️
Fantastic Interview.
DJHaz Beats thank you very much!!!
@@muzikxpress You're more than welcome.
Funny guy, good inter, thanks Twan!
Thank you!!!
Good lad
Totally agree with Stuart when he talks about how he was a little surprised Drifting Away did well because trance was on the way out. I very much remember 2001 it was a panicky feeling to those that really liked to compose classic trance and progressive trance. Everyone was shitting on it online and especially in the magazines. I was a bit upset about it and nervous when releasing couple songs that year
bcastromusic Really? Nothing seemed to come from that.
@@danielcraig9666 It sort of shifted and changed. Trance used to be kind of huge and underground at the same time. It evolved from ambient trance of the early 90's... to hypnotic trance of the mid-to-late 90's... to progressive trance of the late 90's... to the more general uplifting trance that is still common today. The fear was also a bit naive - at the end of the day it doesn't matter what people say is the style-of-the-month - you just do what you love and there will always be an audience. But yeah at the time in 2001 no one missed an opportunity to dis trance - even those that loved it three or fours year before - magazines like Future Music, Sound on Sound, Mixmag, DJ Mag all of them went out of there way to slag trance in product & album reviews and articles in general.
Trance became too commercial around then, lots of trance tunes making it onto the charts and for some, it wasn't cool! The magazines talking of trance going away because it became too commercial are idiots, I don't get why people only want to stick to underground!? All music begins as underground then if good enough, it becomes mainstream! Some didn't want to admit it that they liked it, so they wrote trance off to be seen as cool!
It never went away! Mid 00-s to early teens, the charts were heavily influenced by trance music! The sounds, the synth programming, basslines. David Guetta made a career from ripping off trance!
Lange.. King of remixes!
Just thought of Lange - I believe DJ Tandu remix, what a classic
I switched off when he said he'd choose Armin! Haha
Should have said Solarstone
Kilamanjaro is also a favorite! He has done so many classics.
Yes! One of his other many, many classics!
Class. Hiver & Hammer are the most underrated producers out there, so many amazing remixes. Get an interview with them!
amclellan84 oh trust me, they are on my wish list for sure. But not sure if it will happen since they broke up years ago, plus they don’t live anywhere near me and also don’t perform as far as I know...
muzikxpress would love to see them at Lumo one day. Green Court is another 🙌🏼
amclellan84 H&H broke up, so don’t think that that’s ever gonna happen...
George H&H got mentioned because of their remix of “Drifting Away” ;-)
Hey sir I still listen to Your mix of Red sun rising by lost witness...you didn't mention the track😋that's a classy mix even for that year🤩👍
I wanna be his friend haha.
I wish there was a dub version of the original version.
One of Lange'st best!
How can I donate for you to evolve with your content. I love these interviews, keep them coming
Thanks so much! There's links to my Paypal and Patreon in every video description. I'm actually working on something special for Patreon as we speak. Thank you very much for the support, very much appreciated!!
My Favorite Tracks:
Lange - Drifting Away (Original 12" Mix)
Lost Witness - Red Sun Rising (Lange Remix)
Lange - I Believe (DJ Tandu Remix)
Thank you for making this interview possible. If there are any possibilities, would CJ Stone or Kay Cee be on your list of interviews?
You are welcome! And I would love to interview both one day, but for now I can only focus on people that live near me; if you check the pinned post on the Muzikxpress Facebook page, you can read what you can expect and what not. Damn COVID hehe
@@muzikxpress No worries man, those DJ’s were a bucket list of mine. I’ve enjoyed watching your interviews!
@@Adamgotastrike Thank you! Working on some cool names for 2021 already! Thanks for your support!
How i can get background track in this video on drifting away
Get the CD on Discogs or Ebay!
Sunset dub is my favourite mix as i've never been a fan of the vocal. After Space Brothers Shine, Drifting Away's Sunset dub is a close second on my playlist
Good timing, I just uploaded my interview about "Shine" with The Space Brothers ;-)
@@muzikxpress yup just watched it. Two new comments as well by me ;)
best
How do I get drifting away acapella
The acapella was never released. Maybe ask Lange, not sure if he's giving away parts of his song though, but you can alwasy try of course!
I waas wondering what is his recent project? Is he making more trance music because I haven't hear any new trance music from him.......
Ben Gold check my previous interview with Lange, he’s telling more about his upcoming stuff there 😉
Yesss Brainchild symmetry C
Здравствуйте! Очень бы хотелось узнать что либо о создании трека *Lange pres Firewall & Jav D - Looking Too Deep*
For my vlogs I always focus on famous classics / big hits 😉
Thank you Stuart for helping me make some $$ in tournaments with DDR!!! :D
Darn, I thought the female who appeared in the video and TOTP was the singer!
Benny Ceca I know! Kinda shady! I wish they’d work together again. You would think he would meet the singer of his biggest song!
Very surprised he never mentioned Follow Me! Luckily the die hards listen to his other stuff and realize how good they are too!
I did another vlog / interview with Lange about “Follow Me”, so we did discuss everything about that one already during that interview 😉 You can find that one on my channel as well (episode 080).
@@muzikxpress ohhh thanks a million ❤️
MKN haha hope you like that one too 😉
please get Oliver Lieb to explain Netherworld plss
He is on my wish list for a while already and I really hope it will happen somewhere in 2020. I don't have a travel budget for these vlogs, but once I have enough donations for a trip to Frankfurt, I hope I can interview Oliver, plus some other legendary producers that live in / near Frankfurt (Jam El Mar, Kai Tracid etc etc). If you want to help out, there's links in the video description ;-)
Good shout. There are no words to describe how good L.S.G Netherworld is 👍
ddr max 2 brought me here.
Wow, i'm really surprised now.... i ever thought Katie Marne is a little bit shy to get more famous, but now we know more about her. Is there anybody who met her at these days? I mean the real Katie Marne and not the Model. -_-
That's how you pronounce his name? "Lansh"? I've been saying "Lang-eh" my entire life...
That’s how he does pronounce it himself so I guess so 😉
Hiver and hammer the best? Nope. Not at all in my opinion. I find the original mix just perfect.
Looks like Lange is absolutely not versed in the music sounding of Lange! ))
