I've had 2 Ssangyong's already and I just can't get enough of them. Excellent value for money and excellent quality. Love the brand, very underestimated.
Have had both the Rexton and the Musso - both are excellent, proper SUV/4WD vehicles - very well built and reliable. Point to note - the reference in the manual to the rear 'diff lock' engaging automatically - it's likely that your model doesn't have this feature - it's not standard, the U.K. version also does not have it. I don't really understand why Ssangyong chose not to make this standard given the size and likely purpose of this sort of car - but there it is.
Quite reasonable price. Finding service centers may be tricky and resale options, at least near me, are very thin. So you will use the car until either of you dies.
I think this would be an excellent 'retirement spec' SUV, especially for those outdoorsy types. It sounds like it would tow a caravan quite easily, and with low range 4WD it'll get you pretty much anywhere you'd want to go. It looks comfortable enough on the inside too, and not too much scary tech. Resale wouldn't be an issue either :)
@@MarekDrivesENG wanna see the underneath of the car to see the components of the chassis and see how solid is it I am comparing it to the new kia sorento regarding solidity and durability
My uncle bought Korando (new), my brother bought new year later and now I am thinking of getting a Rexton in full. I had been already at dealer for little driving experience and car is exactly what I want
If for no other reason I appreciate it a whole lot as one of the only body-on-frame SUVs in Europe left, as all Land/Range rovers are monococque nowadays and the new generation of Land Cruiser is too heavy for EU car classification. It's a ton of value, and is probably the most competent Ssangyong product by far, at least until the Torres arrives and then we'll see.
Land Cruiser 300 series is not too heavy. It pushes their corporate emissions too high and can’t compete with Range Rover. The new Grenadier in passenger vehicle form weighs 2.7 tons or more, which is what the LC300 weighs, and there is no restriction to its sale.
**Small caveat** The Rexton has an automatic locking rear differential in some markets, not all markets get the locking rear differential. In Europe it might be trim level specific but in Australia for example even the entry level model has a rear locking differential.
I just read the European press release for this car (I try to archive all materials I use for writing scripts), and it seems the 4WD is geared towards towing a horsebox (they use this specific example), not necessarily for off roading. Having said that, I bet in some markets they wouldn't be able to sell it without certain off road features.
@MarekDrivesENG The auto diff lock engages when there's 100rpm between both axles. It's an Eaton rear diff Cross axle test the diff would have locked almost immediately after some wheel slip, but this example obviously didn't have the auto locking rear ! Otherwise a very capable traction control system that manages wheel spin better than some of It's peers ☺️ Great review though !
Quite a few Ssangyong around the roads of West Wales. Not exactly common but not rare either. One of my small-farmer neighbours has a two year old Rexton. This latest facelift looks better.
There is no other real deal that can go off-road like this one and have its comfort for 50000E. You could go for the Land Cruiser, which with some options is around 75000.
I can only speak for the U.K but for a car of this size, spec and capability you would be looking to spend £60k as a minimum - and that would get you mid-spec cars such as the Land Cruiser, Defender etc. You can have a fully specified Rexton for £45k. In terms of build, fit and finish this is no budget alternative at all.
@@MarthaMansbridge I wouldn't touch a brand new Defender even with a 10-foot pole. Land Rovers suck when it comes to reliability. And here, in Romania, the cheapest Land Cruiser is 11000E more than the full Rexton. And the cheapest Land Cruiser sucks when it comes to comfort and options.
Very nice car. More than SUV - low gear range, real mechanical difflock on rear axle as option, but less than offroader - low clearance, fuel tank bottom lower than the frame without any shield, unshielded alu case of rear differential, unshielded wires and cables on the chassis with dubious sealing... But value to price ratio is very good.
I can't find the prices for the Ssanoung Rexton in Bulgaria, but 60K euro is the price of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado here. And they have some in that can be bought without waiting. It used to be my dream car, but when I tested it last year, I got really disappointed. The top spec version with the air suspension was like a truck, the diesel engine was very noisy, my dream got destroyed basically.
The Rexton with all bells and whistles, 5 seats and 18" rims is 50000E in Romania. Getting mine next week after 4 months of waiting. Also, I'll be installing the Ironman 4x4 suspension kit, which raises the car 3.5cm and drastically improves the comfort both on asphalt and offroad. This kit is 1000E + the installation fee. It's a bargain for this price. Can't recommend it enough!
Hi Marek! Do you maybe know, will Ssangyong import Torres in Europe, and which versions? As in, will it only get us the EV model, or the petrol one as well? Thanks!
Yes, no idea what versions though. I suppose bringing an EV version to Eastern Europe and the Balkans (I'm assuming Balkans by your name) is pointless.
I agree with you: we (the Balkans, you guessed it right, I'm from Serbia, actually) usually get the petrol version of everything that has a petrol version, but there are rare cases when the car brand unifies the offer across Europe (or even wider than Europe), and then we're left only with some cars we can't afford... Anyway, thanks for the reply!
Rexton... a small town in New Brunswick Canada.... had to look that one up. ;). As for this vehicle, it puts me to sleep. It just looks like it's 3 generations behind other OEMs when it comes to materials etc. Oh well, they don't sell here so I should shut up. Thanks for the review Marek. The Toronto car show is a week away. I'll go do a walk since it's about 10mins from my house right next to the CN tower.
I can't find any real faults with this car but, I feel that I may be suffering with a case of unfounded badge snobbery. Which would stop me spending 60k on one.
If residuals are a factor Toyota is your brand. If I were to lease a Rexton, it would be a 0 downpayment, and the lowest possible monthly instalment. In three years take it away, and I don't want to see it ever again.
I guess it all depends on how long you're planning to drive the car for. For me owning a vehicle is an 8-12 years affair. Anything earlier I'm taking a significant depreciation hit on a car that should still be in good working order, and anything later exposes me to some potential costly repairs. But residuals on a 10-year old car don't really matter. If I want to swap cars more frequently, then leasing is less hassle (also in my case it's a company tax write off, etc.)
The price is shockingly expensive! Yes, it looks ok 'ish' in an american way! But I would not buy it even if I had a spare 40-50.000 euro! There are other well proven off roaders out there for similar money!

Fine looking. But with the co2 level so high annual tax would be too high. Pity no hybrid option.
What you save on the price you lose elsewhere.
Normally Mercs powertrains have their transmission integrated with their engine: how could they do it to split for this car?
I think you are referring to the "fully integrated transmission control (VGS)" control unit.
I believe they use a Hyundai transmission now, not an MB unit anymore.
To be precise, they put the gearbox from the genesis g80 in it.
