Want a large SUV that can walk the walk as well as talking the talk? What about one you probably aren't familiar with, the vastly improved fourth generation version of SsangYong's Rexton? If you are secure enough in yourself not to care too much about badge equity and want a large, capable, well equipped seven-seat 4x4 for sensible money, it makes a lot of sense.

Background
Increasingly, large luxury SUVs are all about image, all about badge-equity, all about fashion. Or at least most of them are. Here's one that's more practically grounded - the improved version of the fourth generation SsangYong Rexton.
Of all this South Korean brand's products, the Rexton is probably the one provoking most familiarity amongst UK buyers. That's because it's been around so long - since 2001 in fact, sold in first generation form until 2006 when a second generation version offered much the same kind of solid, practical proposition - and much the same aging 2.7-litre Mercedes diesel engine. A big step forward though, was made in 2013 with the launch of the MK3 model 'Rexton W', which got a properly modern 2.0-litre e-XDi diesel engine later uprated to 2.2-litre capacity. This fourth generation design announced in 2018 borrowed that engine, but not a lot else, showcasing the recent steps forward that SsangYong had made in technology and quality. It's the improved version of that MK4 design that we look at here.
Driving Experience
Under the bonnet, this improved Rexton gets an uprated 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine manufactured by SsangYong, which delivers maximum power of 202PS (up from 181PS) and maximum torque of 441Nm (up from 420Nm.) This powerplant delivers progressive acceleration from a standing start - the rest to 62mph sprint takes 11.9 seconds. More important is the way that this proven e-XDi 220 unit has been tuned primarily for the strong low-end torque typical of the Korean maker's powerplants. Transmission is now a Hyundai-sourced 8-speed automatic. Like most SsangYong SUVs, this one will be ideal for those wishing to tow. Thanks to a braked towing capacity of 3.5-tonnes, it can deal with heavier items like a double horsebox, a large caravan or a commercial trailer.
Like other SUVs in this class, the Rexton features a part time 4x4 system with power delivered permanently to the rear wheels. Unlike German premium brand SUVs, you get a low ratio gearbox for when off-road conditions become more demanding. Off road electronic safety aids like hill start assist and hill decent control are standard and the Rexton is best-in-class for approach and departure angles - 20.5 degrees and 22.2 degrees respectively. On-tarmac, SsangYong says that this Rexton's refinement is much improved over the car it replaces, due to its stiffer body, improved aerodynamics and better engine isolation.
Design and Build
This revised Rexton has a much more commanding presence, thanks to a more imposing front grille, surrounded by re-style LED headlamps, which gives it a more powerful, sturdy stance. The rear end has been revised too, with revised LED tail light clusters. Under the skin though, it is of course just the same, which means that you get the solid body-on-frame construction that rival brands have long abandoned. SangYong has now standardised 18-inch alloy wheels. The Korean brand says this SUV is one of the strongest and safest cars in its class thanks to the high-strength steel construction of its body, which makes this car stiffer than many monocoque-built competitors in this category.

I have just purchased the ULTIMATE , lovely vehicle 👍🇦🇺
One of the few great reviews that tells the truth with no badge snobbery. Driving one in Australia. Smooth and powerful diesel engine, very quiet cabin, good ride quality (on 18 inch rubber) and solid build quality. Beats Landcrusier Prado any day for 30k less.
Great review - had the pre-facelift version when it launched - excellent car, really well built and this revision keeps it looking sharp against rivals - gearbox was previous version’s down side so this new Hyundai box will really help! Ssangyong, as a manufacturer, look to have secured their future back in South Korea with a likely takeover by Edison Motors - not only a great brand name but also specialists in EV. They’d do well to rebrand Ssangyong to Edison in overseas markets where the brand name has struggled to gain traction. It’s a shame to say it but I suspect many people think Ssangyong is Chinese - and whilst most people don’t mind paying Chinese prices, they don’t seem to like Chinese sounding names which explains why ‘actual’ Chinese car brands choose more globally friendly names overseas. For anyone wanting a really capable 4WD with space, quality and reliability you really can’t go wrong with the Rexton - you’d pay 40% more for a Land Cruiser and that car is nothing to write home about in the looks department.
Well said. I own 2020 ELX and can’t see why anyone would pay the extra to get a Prado
This big car at the price has no rivals, so I have bought one and like it very much.
Brilliant news Robert! What made you choose it over its rivals?
Fantastic review! Comprehensive and fair! I’ve driven an Ultimate Rexton in Oz and loved it. Extremely comfortable and a dream to dive. Waiting for 2022 updates from the take over. We hope we don’t loose the 3.5 towing and tough cassis build. Cheers Jen.

Yeah, ssangyong make better SUV than hyundai. In the 90's musso use be a chair man's SUV. Quality car at the Chinese car price. Also it is very safe.
Great review as always - floored that someone on your production team was listening to The Orb - Little fluffy clouds....
Great spot! 😅 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this very detailed real life and sensible review. Your approach in comparing the Rexton to other rival was very realistic compared to most reviewers. Job well done.

it's no longer Korean, ssangyong is now owned by Mahindra 🤗
Wrong - A) it's still based in Korea B) Mahindra is no longer involved
Why do you keep squinting your eyes while driving? Did you forget your 🕶️?
What an odd observation and even odder to call it out?
@@MarthaMansbridge I am very observant.
I thought Ssangyong had just gone bankrupt?
Still trading, in the middle of a takeover by Edison Motors - a South Korean EV bus and truck maker and undoubtedly hungry to expand into cars. This new Rexton along with a revised Musso and soon to launch EV Korando - Ssangyong very likely to have a good future. Manufacturer difficulties aside - this is really a very good product.
@@MarthaMansbridge thanks for the info! The only thing that worries me is whether they will still honour warranty claims, or if there are any difficulties of that nature further down the road.
@@MrUPSman Not sure about other countries but, in the UK, warranties are guaranteed by the UK importer - in order to sell cars here you have to ensure warranties are protected so if you buy a car today in the UK, you will have cover for 7 years regardless of what happens to the manufacturer or the importer - so I'd not be put off buying one at all.
This is such a beautiful Luxury car.
Unfortunately narrated by a BORING person
It’s flawed, the 2.2 litre engine explodes when used for towing, reply me and I will tell you my story heard and judged upon in UK court in 2021.
yes please just bought the truck
hey up
what happened with the engine?
@@cliffwilkins9178 for sure not even replying
@@cliffwilkins9178 I have the musso long wheel base. I have and issue with the tracking which it appears the back axle is out of line. I am waiting for a reply off ssangyong
YOU had a problem - simple. No need to infer there's a general problem with the engine - there isn't - it's a very solid engine that has had more than enough service to prove it.
This is ridiculously expensive.
No, its just a ridiculous pointless car that most people dont need.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply that's a kind offer, I just don't think it offers good VFM.
They are grossly in debt and can't afford to pay their debt with Mahindra. Avoid this odious brand. The only people that rate it are the dealers, and affiliated reviewers such as planet auto.
Odious? sees to me that's a good description of you! there's nothing odious about Ssangyong, a solid Korean brand that's suffered from poor investment from Mahindra. How is it possible Ssangyong can still make far better cars than it's former parent company? Strikes me you have some sort of weird grudge with both Ssangyong and PlanetAuto...
@Martha Mansbridge You'll be aware people can check your comments regarding VW group. Subaru, did you really... lies. Ssangyong are unable to support themselves as they can't produce the volume required. A truly odious, parasitical organisation that needs to be sold or ceased.
Try again
Sales figures show only a few dullards have registered them in the UK market.
@gwanlee Lee Dong-Kwan... of course you think they're doing well. Concrete evidence.
Nobody really needs a car that size. People today have this idea that the bigger the car, the better to show off. In reality nobody else cares about the big ego in the bloated pointless SUV.
Hi Simon, do you have your eye on a particular vehicle at the moment?
Ever heard of personal choice and preference?
try to figure out something hard to imagine: a family with 3 kids (or more) living in the mountains or countyside, going camping some time. Anyway, it's not bigger than usual family MPV, only nicer and capable of going offroad. In fact, it's very practical. Were I to have one more kid, I'd buy it
Rugged and handsome front end, nice looking rear end but those side flanks look somewhat ugly. Very good warranty. A proper off road vehicle if you need that capability. Just one little niggly thing, the lack of adaptive cruise control. Imo a like for like reasonable and more than capable load and towing vehicle all be it a little slow off the mark to 60 mph with it’s quite high Co2 figure.
