- Today on Buckle Up Harry drives the Ssangyong Rexton, Ssangyong's three row, body on frame, SUV. It's an impressive car, with luxury appointments, excellent capability and seemingly no weak points. So why is it 20K cheaper than it's closest rival, the Land Rover Discovery?
Up against cars such as Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, Mercedes Benz GLE, Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus RX, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Kia Sedona, Skoda Kodiaq, BMW X7, Mercedes Benz GLS, Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008, Seat Terraco, SsangYong Rexton, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Touareg will the next generation blow them all out of the water?

Ssanyong full stop. I've had a 2012 Korando for 2 years. Couldn't find another 4wd with space for my 3 kids that had the same spec for the money. I've really enjoyed the car
They're such good value
I love my rexton. I've had it for 2 years now and it's absolutely brilliant.
We can see why, we think they're great too
What mpg are you getting if you don't mind me asking?
@@nicholasr82 about 8.5 litres per 100 km. Sorry, not in US 😛
@@chomes8048 Thanks. That's 27.6mpg
For anyone interested in this car, don't get the 20" rims. 18" are more comfy.
Also, for another 1000E you can get the Ironman 4x4 suspension kit and it makes the driving sooooooo much better, and the comfort, especially for the middle/back rows is greatly improved. It is truly a great car, I'm extremely happy with it!
If it were my car I would definitely be ordering it on the 18s, does the Ironman kit just improve comfort or does it lift it too?
@@BuckleUpShow It lifts the car ~30mm too.
Could you send a link to Ironman suspension for Rexton, please?
The kit was 900E and the installation 250E here in Romania. It is worth every single cent, it made the car so much better it's incredible. They should have fitted them by default, the reviews would have been more positive.
20 grand cheaper and I bet a hell of a lot more reliable.
Yes the odds are certainly in its favour on the reliability front
We have one in our village so good to know more about them. They have come a long way since they 1st came out. Great vid 😊
They are unrecognisable from 10 or so years ago. The price difference between its rivals make this incredible value!
Under rated
I've got a 2014 Korando, had it for three years, never had any issues with it
I'd definitely consider another.
It seems once you've gone Ssangyong you don't go Bbackyong
Great work, man! Top review…👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
I purchased one last year and love everything about it, I also have a large 21 ft caravan that this car tows better them my old full-size off-road 4-wheel drive it's a much better drive, and I love your videos too
Thanks very much, it’s one hell of a capable car!
well you made my mind up for me and i have bought one thanks a great info video and im in perth western australia so the roads are not a problem thanks
Glad I could help
I am thinking ro buy as well in Perth.
Hi mate, really enjoy the video. I’m tossed between the Rexton and LDV d90. Which out of these 2 would you recommend? Cheers
We don't get the LDV d90 in the UK unfortunately to I can't speak to it, but I don't think you'd be disappointed by the Rexton
Had this generation when it first launched late 2017 - what was then the Ultimate was more or less the same spec as the new Ultimate+ - they removed a lot of the spec over the years and now added back in for a bit more money (but nowhere near the sort of increase of other brands). It is an excellent vehicle, extremely well built and reliable. We moved on from it a few years ago, never should have let it go. Amazingly, residuals are extremely strong - to put that into perspective, the car we had was worth c.£27k when it was 18 months old - that same car, now 5 years old, is still worth £27k! You'll struggle to find a Rexton of 3/4/5 years old, regardless of mileage, for less than £25k. We now have a Musso Rhino - a quite different driving experience given the suspension and length and the Auto box is Aisin 6 speed, rather than the now upgraded Hyundai box in the Rexton. My few criticisms of the Rexton in it's earlier form was the gearbox, the auto box was not a strong point at all - it often struggled to find a gear when under acceleration which really impeded any quick progress - the engine is more than capable. The new Hyundai unit is vastly better and really complements the car. Ssangyong don't claim this to be on a par with the Discovery, but knowledgeable buyers will recognise it will give you everything the Disco would for far, far less money and, truthfully, be much more reliable. I cannot recommend it enough - makes me want another.
Well it's something to consider when the Musso Rhino is due to be traded in
Great review I had kyron years ago and loved it even if it was an ugly car, for value for money, I believe you have hit the nail on the head the other companies are just ripping you off, well done for having the guts to say it 👍🏻
It's such good value for money
Love it I want one!
It's a very likable car
I bought it due to its weight, which in the real world weight is more important than ancap rating. The seats don't fold down into the floor because the spare wheel is under the back of the car and is up really high to allow off road clearance.
Yes but there are other vehicles that manage to stow a spare and have flush boot floors. Like I said it's a sign they've taken a simpler cost effective choice rather than increase the sales price, it's a pragmatic approach
It's the same reason you buy Adidas or Nike or what ever.
It's all about the brand... Stop trying to push cheap trainers that nobody wants to buy...
Not all of us are blind slaves to capitalism Mark
@@BuckleUpShow I dont own one single branded item! (with the exception of my car) But at the end of the day you get what you pay for.
@@markbray2988 the rexton is amazing and was only $50k in Australia compared to $70-100k for other large suvs that we test drove. We have friends with those cars by the way (Ford everest, Nissan patrol, Isuzu whatever it is) and they are very impressed with the rexton. We have better interior by far than all of them, quieter, better fuel economy and arguably looks better and more expensive than the rest.
We have done 60,000km with zero issues. We are constantly finding new functions too, most recently being a symbol that comes up occasionally on the AC display. It's an air quality monitor that prevents outside air from coming in when smoke or fumes are in front of the car.
This is great video, thanks for making it! This Y400 Rexton is starting to look like The Car I might need as my next ride! Been driving a T31 Nissan X-Trail for few years, but I could use some extra space and 3rd row for occasional use. It's been a overwhelming to find a newer 4x4 with about the same level of practicality as the T31 (and sadly, I can't afford a Discovery 3 or 4) at reasonable price. Just spotted a really nice 2020 Rexton for sale near me, it's low mileage top spec and only three years old, but the price is less than half of what it was as new! That's amazing value, IMO!!! That Rexton is still out of my budget, but getting really close to acceptable. ;-)
BTW, how would you compare this Rexton to, say, facelifted R51 Nissan Pathfinder? The Pathfinder is more agricultural on the inside, sure, but how do these two compare in on-road manners?
It's much more refined than a pathfinder
Have a 2022 Rexton ELX. Upgraded suspension by Dealer, giving a 40mm lift, which is much better for Australian roads. Ridiculously cheaper than rivals. Drives very nicely on and off road. Apart from the same parts supply issues every brand has currently, can't really fault it. Will tow my 3000kg+ caravan easily. Why would I want a Landrover that constantly breaks down, or a Toyota, or Ford Everest, for $20-40K more?
Exactly
Could you send a link to suspension, please?

@@sosi12…Ironman 4x4 suspension kit….
I have a ssangyong dealer just 5 miles away. The only thing that puts me off is how easy is it for parts or is the dealer network quite good. I used to have a Jeep grand cherokee wk.. I loved that thing and this looks like it would be a goid successor for that.
Live in Highlands of Scotland so I'm a big fan of a decent 4x4.
Love the channel 👍
Well the really big complex bits like the engine and gearbox come from 3rd party companies so they should be readily available
Thanks for your review.
Helped a lot for my decision making. 😊
That's why we're here 😊
The 20 inch rims would be the main cause for the "jiggle" you are feeling . 4x4s should be shod with 16, 17 or 18 inch rims - less metal and more rubber to the ground. I had a rx290 rexton shod on 16inch rims and yokohamas cross terrain tires, what a smooth blissful ride she was. There's saying in Oz (Australia), if you want to go to cutbacks, take a land-rover, but if want to come back, take a Toyota. The rextons have the same reliability as Toyotas, just ask the owners .0
I couldn't agree more about the wheels
Hello, i have a question if you have a choice to buy this big suv, this or xtrail , or new 6 cylinder cx 60 do you buy?😮
I would get this over either because it has better off road ability
@@BuckleUpShow yes it is of course, but what about the acceleration? And driver on a high way,
Ah okay, if you want a fast accelerating car that's good on the highway for this money look at a Hyundai i30n
@@BuckleUpShow ok, but a hyundai is not a big car like as rexton😥
Well pending the imminent update Skoda are currently offering very good prices on Kodiaq's, you can get a 2.0 TFSI 4x4 with 190 PS for £37k and it will be quicker and more refined than the rexton. With all this being said I think the Rexton is fast enough and it's very refined for a body on frame vehicle and I would be very happy to own one
did you try the Automatic emergency break system ?
No because in order to do that I would have to try and crash the vehicle
@@BuckleUpShow I mean, when you approach a vehicle, it must sound an alert and the closer you get , the more it sounds, and it will stop, but not getting to crash , just over 30km /h , not aiming to crash, but it should have detected the vehicle and you getting closer
If you're driving normally, i.e. Following at a safe distance, anticipating and coming gradually to a halt in traffic, then the alert should never sound in any vehicle.
What you're describing sounds more like parking sensors anyhow.
Companies like Euro NCAP and Thatcham test these systems using inflatable objects that won't damage a vehicle if something goes wrong, it would be reckless to test them out in a loaned vehicle on the public highway just on the off chance they don't engage correctly.
@@BuckleUpShow i understand your point.. however, when i was testing a subaru, part of the testing process was to see how the car was capable of noticing about the car in front and how the AEBS worked.. i was wondering, without being reckless, it that feature is in the rexton, since in the specifications it describes it does.. not trying to crash the car thou.
Anyway, thanks for the feeback.
A dealership employee will do anything to make a sale, it doesn't really matter if it pushes past the barrier of unsafe
For some reason I am really warming up to this rexton. Why I don't know. I blame bear 😂
It's a great car
😍😍😍
Quite
Aussie model gets a full size spare alloy under the rear. Annoying that they don't provide that in the UK.
Ot is a shame, full size spare is a must if doing any significant amount of off reading
Quite enjoyed the review, but you definitely need a better lavalier.
The lav is fine, the recorder had it's gain set too high, an issue I have since rectified
Less chrome. Black rims, european version of headlamp and change dashboard like in torres and will be fresh.
They will probably do something to it when they change it over to have a KG badge on the front, but only time will tell
@@BuckleUpShow yes. I already have one 2022 and this is an exellent car, but dashboard is a bit vintage. But other than that Rexton is a luxury Beast
you don't pronounce the second S in the name
And you don’t understand sarcasm
Needs more chrome
Chrome tyres is the next logical step I think
Ssangyong Rectum is often overlooked, but its a decent workhorse car with an unfortunate name
I didn't think the Rexton was well enough known to have cultivated a nickname
And it will be 10 x more reliable than a land rover
Odds are yes
Eu acho um carro muito bonito pena que no Brasil ela nao de muito certo só ficamos com os modelos mais antigos como sempre o brasileiro tomando nu cu 😂😂
Brazil has been responsible for some of the world's craziest cars though, do they not sell Ssangyong there at all or just not this Rexton?
Só foi vendido até o ano 2018 a rexton e a action sport. E pararão com a exportação.
You need to do more work out than car reviews young man.
I won't be taking any exercise tips from a furry thank you very much
@@BuckleUpShow👍
This guy should just do Reviews with very large trucks only. embarrassing.
This is a review of a "large truck"?
…stop drinking vodka, will help you to think properly again and to behave respectfully…😂
They could have atleast changes the screen been the same for the last 6 years. To me just looks old and cheap.
If you use apple car play or android auto you don't even see it
