2024 SsangYong Rexton review: 4WD test for Korea's Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport rival!

- The 2024 SsangYong Rexton is the 4WD wagon you might not have heard of - yet. It's the embattled South Korean brand's answer to the Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Fortuner, among others.
Despite its stiff competition, the Rexton has won over plenty of buyers with its tempting combination of relatively low pricing and a long features list. Needless to say, the value proposition is strong here, so long as you can see past its lesser-known badge and nameplate.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the Rexton's Ultimate flagship through its paces on- and off-road to find out if it has what it takes to compete on the rough stuff. Spoiler alert: it's more capable than you think!

People have already started taking deliveries of the new 2024 Rexton released in Oct 2023, and this review is for the old 2023 model which is not on sale anymore, so this video doesn't make sense in Nov 2023
Other than a slightly revised new dash with a new screen there's no difference between them so this review is perfectly valid.
For spending 99% of the time on the road, but still having enough capability to access some 4wd hipcamps or take on the beach, this seems ideal.
Many valid points, but the reality is unless you’re a hard core off-roader and want to launch yourself at difficult trails at speed, you can get most 4WD’s through tougher sections by patiently choosing your approach. I’ve owned less capable vehicles and got some strange looks from people, who wondered how I got my less capable vehicle into some locations. Yes, having more ground clearance and articulation etc is ideal, but if you’re realistic about how you drive and know when the vehicle capability is reached, you can get a Rexton and similar vehicles through far tougher sections without damage.
Bloody good value for money, for what it is.
The first detail observed in a collision when a vehicle towing is the whether the weight was legal.
The Rexton gives 500kgs extra for peace of mind over mux, Everest, Prado.
You need to step up to a patrol or land cruiser, ram, and over the $100k mark
It would need a lift kit for sure. Otherwise it has the basics for decent off roading: a real frame with 4wd, low range and a limited slip at the rear axle.
Would be interesting to see the same review with the optional ironman suspension fitted
And off road tires. With this suspensions and right tires i think has more off road capabillityes.
Seriously, how many people actually drive their 4wd anywhere apart the highway
how else do you get from home to the off road tracks lol
@@wax333 95% of all of them never see dirt or a 4 wheel drive track 🤦
On my pebble driveway
2 inch lift, change tyre & rims will increase its capabilities
Same reviewer 7months ago quite positive about the Musso long wheel base off road which to my knowledge is similar mechanically? Unless Im mistaken seems a bit inconsistent?
Rexton has crappy 8 speed gearbox .
This guy didn't even get the model year right... or mention the factory (and 7 year warranty) backed ironman suspension lift, bash plates, and option to take the 18" rubber and put better tires on.
Im guessing he thinks the Pajero wasn't a real 4wd as well...despite winning the paris-dakar rally 12 times (7in a row)
he ia performing test with ESP activated, = no 4-wheel drive, wearing on the brakes every time get wheel spin
also affect fuel consumption when offroad
This IS NOT the 24 model!
Is the new screen going to make it better off-road?
A friend has one and i had a look under it before he took it offroad. But the rear diff drain is going to be the first thing to be removed
Why ?
@@amrashraf9559 because it is so low and exposed. A small hit on a rock and then no more diff oil
its a pity you didnt test it with the factory suspension upgrade.....
Fine looking. But with the co2 level so high annual tax would be too high. Pity no hybrid option.
some reviewers seem to slag this suv, alot dont, very mixed reviews off road
Not the 2024 model…! You shall change the reviews title…
I have this car, its amazing car, in off road is excelent and this presentation is litle bit non corectly. Maybe Toyota or another brands pay more for presentation.
Ok, can not compare with Toyota , but belive me, its a great car and good offroader.
If you put Iron Man suspension and dedicate tire become a real hard off roader.
Honest 4wd review!! Definitely not capable for the aussie bush
2023
Ssanyong is sold to KG Mobility.
Is this a 2024 model?
Our test vehicle is the MY23 Ultimate, but the 2024 Rexton is due to arrive in Australian showrooms this month
Yeah the 2024 model is already available as a demo in many Australian dealerships - I have seen the adverts on FB. I respect your review on this model but it would have made more sense to review 2024 and then label it as a 2024 in your title which would be more accurate representation of what you are reviewing than the 2023 model you have reviewed.
@@carsguide So change the title please to 2023
Brakes spongy, throttle slow? Rubbish, iam suprised how quick the car is for its size and the brakes are good. Whats with the incessant 4 wheel drive review? Its not marketed as a 4 wheel drive but it does have that ability to go off road.
A very biased review I agree, the rextons biggest advantage is it's towing capacity compared to it's competitors, mux, Everest, Prado, all only have a 3000kg towing capacity, whereas this has 3500kg.
This is where it kills it's competitors for value.
Extra 500kgs for peace of mind is well worth it.
I've taken on tougher tracks in my RWD van...
how can you take a car review seriously when they can't even get the model year right?
These "SUVs" are not for offroading. Theyre for mums who want to feel safe looking down on others and cant drive.
Why would someone who can't drive get behind the wheel of mid-size suv this big?
@@Kierdziolso that when they crash they come out on top
@@georgepatient7710 That's just stereotpe thinking.
Cars are much safer thanks to crumple zones, modern seatbelts and many airbags.
You don't need to drive a large car to survive a crash.
Not to mention it's easier to maneuver smaller vehicles and takes less time to park.
@@Kierdziol yes and poor drivers don't think that way. It's why so many 3 star rated cars are used on school runs when Volvo's would be the best for people with children. Think about how many office workers use SUV'S and pickup trucks. They don't really need them it gives the illusion of safety and security.
This is not 2024 Rexton
