For any Pyromania fans out there, it's definitely worth checking out the deluxe edition. The bonus disc is a live show from the LA Forum in 1983. The Pyromania songs sound supercharged, and it's great hearing Phil Collen shred over the On Through the Night and High and Dry songs. But the whole band is on fire. You can hear the excitement surrounding them at this point in their career and the energy they are generating. They sound young, hungry and on top of the world. I really feel if this had been released back in the day as a standalone live album it would today be considered a classic, up there with Strangers In the Night or Made in Japan. It's fucking great.

Adrenalize had a couple of excellent songs: Tonight, and White Lightning being the best of them. Retroactive (the followup) is a criminally underrated b-sides album from 1993. It was the heaviest thing they had released since Pyromania. Songs like: Desert Song, Fractured Love, Action, She's Too Tough, Only After Dark, Ride Into the Sun, From the Inside, Ring of Fire and I Wanna to Be Your Hero. I can do without Two Steps Behind, Miss You in a Heartbeat and When Love and Hate Collide.

      1. High n Dry (love the pete willis/Clark era)
      2. Pyromania ( albums 1-4 are perfect albums. i love all the songs. )
      3. On Through The Night (i wish they did a remastered version of this album, it needs it)
      4. Hysteria (a bit overplayed compared to the rest, but i'm still not sick of it, but hence it's #4)
      5. Adrenalize (a near perfect album, i think if they would of taken out 2 tracks it be stronger)
      6. X (def lep goes pop, i thought it was a pretty good album. now, everyday, 4 letter word, love don't lie are all great songs, but why they were talking so much shit is because they had 3 songs in a row that weren't great which are gravity, cry and a girl like you. but they bring it back with scar and let me be the one.)
      7. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge (similar to X in my mind, a solid album with a few fillers like X)
      8. Yeah (Def Lep always knew how to do covers well, and this shows it. But some of the song choices i didn't care for)
      9. Slang (What's good on this album i think is very good, and what's bad is very bland. When Pete was kicked out, i felt they lost their balls a bit, when they lost Clark, they lost their edge, and with Viv, he's good, but they were at a stage where they were no longer the young guys, they were dads, older men, and it be silly for them to pretend they aren't.)
      10. Def Leppard (continuing the trend of making uneven albums. More bad then good, and this goes with the next album on the list. Their is a difference. I think with this album they are comfortable in their shoes, and are just doing what they want, while with Euphoria/Slang/X, they were lost. They wanted to be relevant, and couldn't find that road. They tried to be experimental, then back to their roots, then tried to bring in the best writers/producers at the time to no avail.)
      11. Euphoria
      12. Retroactive (left overs from past albums, and they feel like leftovers to me.)

HIGH AND DRY is without question the strongest Def Leppard album. The best songwriting, performance, and production, period. IMO, when Pete Willis departed, it was the beginning of the end. I saw the Pyromania tour live, and it was great... kicked the show off with Rock, Rock 'Til You Drop... but in all seriousness, all you need to have by Def Leppard are these first three albums w/ Pyromania at #3.

When Pyromania came out in 1983, EVERYONE was listening to that album. It ruled the airwaves, even though other bands also released some of their best albums the same year, many of which have held up better over time:
    Thin Lizzy: Thunder and Lightning
    Motorhead: Another Perfect Day
    Metallica: Kill 'em All
    Mercyful Fate: Melissa
    Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind
    Slayer: Show No Mercy
    Black Sabbath: Born Again
    Fastway: Self-titled
    Savatage: Sirens
    Accept: Balls to the Wall
Gary Moore: Victims of the Future
On a side note, I still remember the first time I saw Def Leppard at Legend Valley in Columbus Ohio, on a bill that included Ted Nugent, J. Geils Band, Scorpions, and Blackfoot. Def Leppard was virtually unknown at the time (pretty sure it was their first U.S. tour), and I remember someone brought a home-made banner with names of all the performing bands, and they spelled the band's name "Death Leopard!" I even found their set list from that show online. How's this for a quick, barn-burning set:
    1) Hello America
    2) It Could Be You
    3) It Don't Matter
    4) Answer to the Master
    5) Medicine Man

Bolan had a massive metallic guitar tone at the time (Tanx era, late '72-early '73, you can hear it on Children Of the Revolution, Jitterbug Love, The Groover, Midnight). Girlschool covered it too, Placebo as well feat. Bowie live, but nothing like the legendary original.

I don't really listen to Def Leppard anymore, but back in the day surprisingly, I loved Pyromania, and subsequently checked out High 'N Dry and On Through The Night, and liked the former but not the latter.
Def Leppard decided, appropriately enough, in around 1984, to declare that they are not and never have been heavy metal (ala "We have never been at war with Eurasia" etc).
Granted, they were a more polished and commercial version of metal, but the first three albums were definitely metal after a fashion. At least by early 80s standards.
I think a lot of bands eschewed being labeled metal because they thought the term would limit their commercial and critical appeal.

Lynne looks wonderful as always! Glad to see her doing programs! High N Dry, Pyromania and Slang are my top 3. I think I stopped listening after Slang, which I dug the grungyness. I remember when Hysteria came out, I was all excited because I had heard the lead single that came out before the album, which was Women, and I loved that track. Then I heard the rest and I didn't get into it at all. I've softened a bit since but it's not my favorite. Adrenalize was okay but nothing overly memorable aside from Do You Wanna Get Rocked.

High n Dry has never been bettered.

Just for backdrop, I'm 39 and grew up hating Def Leppard. A vinyl group convinced me to get High N Dry about 6 years ago now. I was absolutely floored. Flat on my ass floored. How was this the same band that did garbage like Armageddon It? Quickly got the debut as well. Now I don't think they suck but instead get to lament how or why their hard rock awesomeness declined to little more than bubblegum rock. I think Pyromania is a fantastic album that got played out because of the hits, but really, if you could erase the memory of hearing 'Photograph' and some of the hits ad naseum and start fresh, it's a fantastic album and it does incorporate some of the style from 'High and Dry'. After Pyro though, 'Hysteria' has a few good tracks, but they were a different band completely, one that I never bought another album from.

One of the things I love so much about the Sea of Tranquility crew is the way they (especially Pete) convince you to go back and listen to stuff you have dismissed.
I always liked "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" but dimissed "On Through The Night" as garbage.
In fact, I hated OTTN because of the track "Hello America", and thought I had heard the whole thing.
But an old friend insisted that I actually never heard the whole thing because I gave up on it
    He was right.
    That's a solid album.
I recently re-listened to Whitesnake"s "Children Of The Night" based on stuff Pete said about it and realized, holy shit, he's right, that's a kick ass song.
Thank you for all you do Pete.

The 2 first albums are must have classics! Once Pete Willis left and Phil joined, it went downhill fast and bad!
I like the debut better than High & Dry, for 3 reasons:
    1. A sentimental one: On through the night was my first NWOBHM album and I played non stop. It is my 2nd favorite album of 1980 only topped by Iron Maiden
    2. On through has the better (metal) tracks: Answer to the master, Overture, When the walls came tumbling down are some of the most epic songs of that whole era. They combine the best and finest of the seventies British hard rock (Thin Lizzy, Queen, Priest) with the high octane of NWOBHM. Sorry Lynn, I don’t hear the connection with Southern rock.
    3. Mutt Lange gave the band an almost forced AC/DC sound on High and Dry. I honestly think that those amazing songs would have been better if produced by Martin Birch or Tom Allom.
