  • One year: ZERO sailing. That is one of the consequences of the pandemic on our lives. But that's about to change drastically, as we are getting ready to tackle some of our biggest passages to date, which will take us to...?!
A HUGE thank you to Takacat and Torqeedo for making it possible for us to try out a new super-fast electric dinghy setup, which we are excited to talk about in more detail once we have it all figured out.
We sincerely hope that you enjoy this video until we ACTUALLY start sailing again!🙂

Nice new dingy 😁 I'd like to think I had a part in that. Quite a while ago I emailed Takacat and suggested they should watch your channel and consider sponsoring you with a new cat as you were such fantastic ambassadors for their brand. I'm sure this was already in the works, but makes me feel good thinking I played a part 😉 cheers to my favorite channel on RUclips, Andy

Funny I was going to email you guys about the dinghy motor, and here you are upgrading. Great addition. Heading northeast to escape hurricane season is a great idea. Though the ABC islands are fairly safe, winds die down a lot in the area during hurricane season. I wish I could crew your boat, but too short notice. I could definitely help you guys on the return trip from Madeira or Cape Verde. We've exchanged emails before. Besides, I still haven't got my vaccination and it would complicate matters. Happy for you guys. Fair winds.

I always loved this quote and it seems to apply to seafarers as well.
“We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend."
“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilisation, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.”

    Re Azores.
We did a similar North Atlantic circuit, starting from Newfoundland.
    We Loved the Azores.
To avoid the mid Atlantic high area of no wind ,Consider sailing NORTH to 40N 50 W before turning East to the Azores.
It will be cold ,dress warmly - ski gear.
    We loved the Azores.
The island of Flores is beautiful, but there is no real harbour, you have to Anchor out ,even upon first arrival...
Horta, on Faial is ‘the Mecca’ of the mid Atlantic, go there, but it’s crowded, be careful crossing the street.
Loved Sao George, go there, stay there ...it’s just 10 miles from Horta, call ahead for berthage.
Praia du Vitoria on Terceria has an excellent Marina and a great harbour for anchoring out, loved it there too! We ‘ hauled out there for ‘ winter’...they have a huge food festival there in July and August.
Ponta del Gada, is also very nice , the Marina is rolly, the city is wonderful.
There is a good marina in Santa Maria as well.
Excellent wine and cheese in the Azores, stock up before you leave!
Honestly, The Azores are an undiscovered paradise! As non EU members we could only stay there for 3 months at a time
We visited Porto Santo in the Maderias, and lifted out there , we did not visit Funchal.
Re the Canaries , we visited La Palma, Tazacorte, Very nice as well.
Watch out for those “ acceleration zones” around the Canaries, they are real, perhaps you know this already
We stocked up in the Canaries, and by passed the Cape Verdes...
Contact me if you want more info.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  3 года назад

Thanks Edward! You describe our plan exactly :) Thank you for all the tips!!! I'll make sure to go back to your comment for Azores tips. We already crossed the Atlantic once via the canaries and Cape Verde, and are familiar with weather patterns there ;)

Sounds like a sweet plan, double Atlantic. I am planning a Southern Atlantic tour for the future. What do you think of: Fernando de Noronha - Falklands - South Georgia - Tristan de Cunha - Saint Helens - Ascension - Fernando de Noronha ? Could be a cool regatta! Fair winds and following seas.

That would be right now, or the last two weeks. We feel that we are a little late, but we are ready to handle what may come our way.

Wow, this is an interesting E-engine. We currently have the EPropulsion 1.0 but also have the desire to go with more power. I am going to check out the EPropulsion Navy Evo 6.0 as soon as it becomes available at the dealership in Annapolis. However, we are still intimidated by the significant weight (and cost) of the battery.
I am really curious how the Torqeedo will work for you. I guess a lot of people may be interested in some good information about this engine.

We will obviously do a full review of the new setup as soon as we have a little more experience of it! But so far, it is amazing :)

Hey Guys - does your takacat fit ok in your main locker ('garage' I think you called it) when its all packed away ? I'm tempted by the sport 300, which I guess its a bit more bulky , but our deep but relatively narrow (60cm) is a worry.

So the Takacat LX is a lot more compact than the Takacat Sport, because the takacat Sport has this hard transom. The Sport is nice because the closed bow gives a little more room at the front for laudry, groceries, trash.... but the open bow of the LX is GREAT for boarding and offboarding, swimming of the dinghy and diving, especially if you have pets or are with someone in "less good shape". They both have their advantages and it's a matter of personal preference!
